The subtle art and exact science of video game porting can be a complete minefield, and though there have been a huge number of highly successful ports over the years, the likes of Street Fighter for the ZX Spectrum, DMC3 for PC and Pac-Man for the Atari 2600 prove that it's a much trickier job than it seem. That or developers are lazy sometimes. Here are 10 Worst Video Game Ports of All Time!

You know, I’ve gotten to the point where I almost never buy a game for more than 20 bucks. not only does that save me a lot of money, but by the time it gets down to that price, a lot of these problems have been patched out. It sucks that the people who get it on day one often don’t get an acceptable product, but at the same time my feelings about a lot of games, including Many on this list, is so much more positive because I waited.

They tried, but what really kills it in the tape version is, as mentioned in the video, the multiload in different parts of the tape depending on the character. The C64 version is even worse about this, as it requires to load the game from the beginning after each match (I suppose because loading the match overwrites the intro and character selection).

The video games industry crash of 1983 impacted North America only, but Europe and Japan were basically unscathed. It's a common misnomer that it was a worldwide phenomenon.

@The Retro Speculative So why was the British industry of the 80's only saved by Japanese consoles and American PCs in the 90's? You going to ignore Sir Clive selling out to Sugar, Sugar leaving games, Flare tech selling out to Atari, etc? Or do you live in a fantasy world where the Sam Coup lead the way? Hell, even by the mid-80's, Europe was letting Atari and Commodore lead in 16-bit computers.
@elbiggus
@elbiggus 2 года назад
@@juststatedtheobvious9633 Sir Clive made a number of terrible business decisions that were completely unrelated to the video games market, and the sale to Amstrad happened long after the supposed crash of 1983, so I'm not sure how any of that is relevant. Also the British games industry of the early 80s was a) pretty new, b) growing at a phenomenal rate, and c) was not "saved" by Japanese consoles and American PCs - it was more a mix of "the British hardware industry was overrun by Japanese/American competitors" and "the gaming software industry had and continues to have a disproportionately high UK representation"; we didn't have the manufacturing capabilities, investment resources, or cheap labour to compete in the field of churning out physical goods, but we sure as heck made a hugely significant contribution to the games that ran on the imported hardware. The fact of the matter is that Atari made a series of poor decisions and they fell apart in 1983 but videogaming as a whole was already moving away from consoles by then, and sales of home computers and their accompanying software was growing rapidly before, during, and after the supposed crash, the NES was released in Japan at the height of the supposed disaster, and really if you didn't live in the US and own an Atari VCS *nothing changed* for you. But yeah, apart from everything you said being pretty much wrong, you make an excellent point!

Skyrim for PS3 was unplayable at launch past 30 hours, and Bethesda only gave journalists the XBox version before release, hiding the fact that the PS3 port had such awful issues before launch. Still haven't forgiven Bethesda for that. Awful to see that they had the same issue with another port and didn't learn their lesson.
@nolagale
@nolagale 2 года назад
First, Bethesda didn't develop FNV. Second, there's a reason a lot of ports to the PS3 were subpar, and it was Sony's insistence on using a weird-ass architecture that made porting exceedingly difficult.

Wow, whoever wrote that Spectrum piece got a lot wrong. Firstly, the spectrum was a home computer not a console. Secondly, the picture shown was a microdrive, not a tape player. Thirdly, a fair amount of people feel the C64 version is much worse. And lastly, at the time, the spectrum port was received fine! "Your Sinclair issue 87 said “Staggering graphics and speed and a huge range of moves. It’s one of the best two-player games on the good ol "Speccy” gifting it 67%. Sinclair User gave it 89%." Sure it doesn't play fantastically with hindsight by 2022 standards, tape multi load was a bane of so many Spectrum games by that point it had gotten ridiculous (though disks were actually a spectrum format by this point) and there's absolutely an argument for not porting it at all, but top 10 worst port of all time? It's not even the worst port on the speccy! Check out Out Run, Jailbreak, Stun Runner or Double Dragon on the platform. All worse than this. Much worse in fact. Side note; the Spectrum +3 (released in 1987, five years after the 48k rubber model pictured and still the main model at the time of street fighter 2's release in 1993) had a built in disk drive which could have alleviated the main problem of loading as well. As far as I know it only got a 128k tape release, presumably to broaden sales.

If you're going all the way back to the ZX and the 2600, you could find some low hanging fruit on the Commodore 64. The C64 port of Taito's "Rastan," for instance, was unfinishable as shipped, due to a bug that made a single specific jump impossible to accomplish. Always confused hearing about the video games crash in the 80s. I was 11 in 1982. Didn't know anyone who didn't own a computer. Speccy, 64, Vic 20, BBC. Even had a friend who owned an electron. The Boots HMV W H Smith in Manchester that had whole sections dedicated to games seemed to be flourishing through this crash. As did Ultimate, Ocean, US Gold, Codemasters etc. I think the video game console crash of the 1980s has been misdescribed so many times as a games crash it appears to now be canon. Also remember borrowing my friends copy of pacman on the 2600 and thought it was OK. Certainly didn't expect it to look like the arcade version. Like asteroids space invaders defender etc. didn't either. I liked the crap intro though

The 'video games crash' of '83 was almost entirely a US based thing. Home computers (ZX Spectrum, C64, and the Amstrad CPC from '84) were all doing really well in Europe, although consoles took a slight downturn until the release of the NES. Unfortunately, every article about the crash calls it a worldwide phenomenon, adding to the US-centric view of the world.

I remember it took me 4 days to figure out how to run the game in the first place and then I had to sort out the in-game technical issues which took me 2 more days. Try porting a game yourself to fully understand why ports go bad. Transitioning one game from one system to another can be worse than finding a needle in a burning haystack, suspended over the Grand Canyon. Different systems have different nuances, and however slight those nuances are, make a world of difference. I worked on a team who ported x game to y system. It took more time and effort to port the game, than the initial game making process itself took. Unless you have actually tried to do this, you will have zero ounce of credibility to stand on. And I am not talking about porting a game to similar systems in different regions. Like a Famicom game to the NES, or Mega Drive to Genesis. I mean from PC to a home console system, or vise versa. Those are a REAL nightmare to do.

Great Video, but considering old school PC ports seems kinda off the purpose for this list. Ports for the 8 to 16 Bit computer era was extremely tough to deal with, and most dev companies would just release almost anything that resembled the originals in something, be it barely 'playable' or not. Were to consider ports from that era, there are actually way worse ports than the speccy SFII, tbh.... Apart from all of that, this video pretty much show how some devs seems to take less to none care when doing console to PC ports. Almost the entire list talks about this kind of conversion, and the bottom line conclusion is that PC games are still thought out as cash grabs, i.e. something that would not engage its gamer community.

I think that it is unfair to taint the Arkham series with a bad port of what was, honestly, a great story in a game. Yes, it is a bit lackluster, but I still think it is magnificent and a great finale for the series; really the only way it could end.

Man, that made me sad to watch. The ZX Spectrum was not a console, it was a computer; while "cassette tape-like cartridges" (i.e. the Microdrive) were available for the machine they a) were pretty uncommon, b) didn't require manually fast forwarding, and c) SF2 didn't come on Microdrive, it came on an actual honest-to-goodness cassette. Please stop covering machines that were made before you were born unless you're going to actually do even the most basic research first; this is not the first time you've made a fairly embarrassing mistake when talking about old hardware or software, but it's pretty easy to make sure it's the last! (Also I get kind of annoyed by the whole "video game industry collapse" thing; people who owned a C64, Apple II, VIC 20, TRS 80, Spectrum, ZX81, BBC, Atari 8-bit, or any of the other myriad of computers that were available at the time were completely unaffected, if you lived outside the US literally nothing happened, and the whole thing should really just be called "the Atari mismanagement of 1983". Not your fault, though, it's a broader problem with the annoying US-centric nature of games coverage, and includes related nonsense like the NES/Famicom getting disproportionate affection given its almost complete failure to make an impact outside the US and Japan.) On a semi-related note, my family and I *loved* the 2600 version of Pac Man back in the day; we'd never played (or even seen) the arcade version so we didn't have anything to compare it to, and it's not a bad game in and of itself, and while it's a terrible port in the sense that it bears very little visual or technical similarities to the original it's a *fantastic* port given the limitations of the console, and still captures the spirit and essence of its arcade ancestor.
@juststatedtheobvious9633
@juststatedtheobvious9633 2 года назад
Check out Ms. Pac-Man on the 2600, if you think Pac-Man was the best an Atari 2600 can do. Or better yet, the homebrew Pac-Man 8k. Also, you guys had your own crash. It's why Sinclar sold out to Sugar, who had to leave the market himself. And why we don't talk about the exciting Konix multisystem, or how that evolved into the Atari Jaguar.
@elbiggus
@elbiggus 2 года назад
@@juststatedtheobvious9633 I already replied to your similar incorrect comment below so I won't bother again. As to the Ms Pac Man port, that has almost all the same problems as Pac Man (stretched playfield, flickering sprites, etc.) so it seems like an odd point to bring up. I know the 2600 can do some pretty amazing things (HALO is a work of genius), but compared to other contemporary games on the system it's fine - almost every game back then for the wooden lump had crude visuals, terrible sound, and slightly ropey gameplay, but when there was nothing to compare it against those weren't as big a problem as modern revisionists seem to think.
@juststatedtheobvious9633
@juststatedtheobvious9633 2 года назад
@@elbiggus Ms. Pac-Man has more intelligent sprite flicker management due to the 8k rom size. And, again, if you want to pretend the American crash was even a thing, then it's okay for me to claim your industry crashed in the 90's.
@elbiggus
@elbiggus 2 года назад
@@juststatedtheobvious9633 Wait, what now? I literally said that *there was no crash* in my original comment, so I'm not sure why you're under the impression I'm claiming the opposite. Are you feeling OK? All that happened was Atari lost a bunch of cash and had to sell up because they did some dumb stuff, and that's all. There was no "crash". The video game industry has seen upward growth since it was a twinkle in Thomas T. Goldsmith Jr. and Estle Ray Mann's eyes. Oh, and as a bonus to why the whole thing is a crock of shit, Nintendo couldn't find a pot to piss in in the UK for most of the 80s - a combination of an embarrassingly inept marketing strategy (eventually resulting in two different variants of the NES with compatibility problems between them), the eye-watering price of games compared to the competition, and the fact we already had our own platforms and games that we were quite happy with thanks - meant that the NES was pretty much a zero here in its first few years; it did eventually just about catch up to the Master System (which isn't much of an achievement - neither did particularly well) but only due to massive cost reductions towards the end of its life. The NES didn't save squat for two reasons: one, outside of the US and Japan it was barely a blip on anyone's radar, and two, there was nothing to save. In summary, seeing as you seem to be confused: there was no crash in the US or anywhere else, and while Nintendo may have eventually reshaped the landscape they saved the video game industry in the same way my shark repellent spray keeps great whites out of my bath...

E.T. and Pac-Man did not cause the game crash! Unrestrained shovelware flooded the market, forcing retail prices to plummet. How people can continue to believe that any individual games could cause the crash is baffling enough, but thinking said games somehow killed _competitor's_ platforms but not their own... Oy. And that's just one of many fallacies in this myth.
