Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we’ll be discussing the top 10 WORST ways that canon has been BROKEN in the wizarding world of Harry Potter.
When an author builds a fictional universe over the course of several decades, there are bound to be small contradictions here or there. But in the case of Harry Potter and the ever expanding universe of the wizarding world, there have been some pretty big doozies when it comes to the canon being-not just broken-but completely SHATTERED.

It’s certainly written as if it’s fanfiction from someone who didn’t even understand the original series. Sadly, Rowling somehow thought it was acceptable enough to call canon. She must have been offered a ridiculous amount of money to make something so insulting to her story actually part of it. That being said, actually watching the play in front of you is an amazing experience and I would highly recommend it, if you can just put the story to one side.

I rather begrudgingly accept it as such because Rowling said it, but it’s certainly by far the worst aspect of the canon. The play itself is really good to watch live though, just wish the story was as good as the production. If it was, it would be one of the greatest plays of all time.

I am not sure he did it in order to avoid issues with the canon (and if so, then he was unsuccessful). He did it to enrich the lore. His ideas evolved all the time, his writings include contradictions, and he was not a stranger to retcons. He was also unable to solve some of the issues with the lore. That being said, the amount of work he put into worldbuilding is unparalleled. What bothers me most about canon issues with HP is how often JKR tries to tell her readers that she had planned something from the start, instead of admitting her ideas changed over time. As far as I know, this is not something that Tolkien ever did.

@@marcelsgroot They also catch or summon fish from the river. When they can they go to super markets as well. It’s just that they are getting tracked down by death eaters and dementors being quite prevalent around the place as well that cause them to spend most of their time hiding in the forest. When they have the opportunity to get decent food they take it, but they don’t always have that. Also it’s a story and it makes the plot more interesting if they are without food sometimes, I suspect Hermione going on a Tesco meal deal run every couple of days might not be so interesting.

About Dumbledore being the Secret Keeper of Grimmauld Place, would that even count as being his own Secret Keeper? Sirius owned the house, so wouldn't Dumbledore technically be Sirius’ Secret Keeper? But for everything else you’re right, I have recently been rereading some of the books, and I noticed JK either wasn't very good with keeping up with small details or changed to fit the story for later books, it's nothing big, just a few things here and there. For example, Sirius gives Ron an owl at the end of POA, and by GOF everyone seems to forget it came from Sirius, and even Harry acts as if he saw it before, in COS Tom Riddle tells Harry Hagrid used to keep werewolf cubs under his bed, which makes no sense with the way werewolves work in Harry Potter.
@nurarihion
@nurarihion 5 месяцев назад
Yeah I noticed the thing with the Werewolves too. In COS Lockhart says something about a potion to cure them or something like that, which makes no sense in later books as Lupin explains werewolves need to learn to live with this condition for life, and the only potion mentioned is the one given by Snape to Lupin to help with the symptoms, but not curing the condition. Now given Lockhart was a liar it could be that it was all bluff, but since he used to stole the triumphs of other witches and wizards it kinda seems that that was the case. When I reread the books I kinda got the feeling that the first Four books were just about the sense of wonder around a magical world, and it was only until book 5 that Rowling really did sat down in order to try and write down the laws of her world.

I came here to write the same thing about Grimmault place. Sirius also wasn't allowed out. So I really think that Dumbledore was the secret keeper for Sirius and his house. And then they made it the head quarter. I can't remember about the Bill's cottage, though. It seems I need to reread that book. 😊
@sofiadragon6520
@sofiadragon6520 5 месяцев назад
All good catches! It was Sirius's house so Dumbledore isn't his own secret keeper for sure. Some of this can be cleared up by "they lied." Tom Riddle's comment about werewolf cubs in particular might have been testing how naive Harry was, and Bill sating he found a way to be his own secret keeper vould just be a level of paranoia. As for Lockhart, he might uave confused Wolfsbane for a cure, he's wrong about everything else after all. And between reading her own books' fanfiction and the editors clearly backing off telling her to cut down legnth and unnecessary detail, JKR bloated the last few books with a lot of self indulgent worldbuilding at the cost of a tighter story. Especially with the essays written on her website after the books were published! A lot of the stuff she's upset people by saying is in that extra material, so she would have saved herself a lot of grief.

Yeah, as originally introduced it seemed like the galleon was supposed to be like the British pound was historically- literally worth a pound of silver, and if you were working class you'd be lucky if you made 5 pounds in a year, and where nobles might earn a few hundred. And the single galleon in the Weasleys' vault makes sense in that context. But then the exchange rate changed a wee bit.

The biggest blunder in the Fantastic Beast films has to be the bloodpact between Dumbledore and Grindlewald. It seems they can still cast spells at one another indirectly (hence why the blood pact could be broken by both their spells meeting). It’s more likely Albus had to get creative with ricocheting spells off walls, hence the ferocity of the three way duel. That’s at least one way of looking at it

In the book she just says she modifies their memories so I wonder if some sort of false memory was used although I’m not sure how that would work. To be fair, the books and movies treated the kids (Harry's generation) as more mature than their actual age and the parents of that generation as somewhat less vital than their originally meant age (even though witches and wizards get older than muggles). Think about what Sirius said against Harry in Order of the Phoenix: HARRY POTTER: Do you really think there's going to be a war, Sirius? SIRIUS BLACK: It feels like it did before. You keep it. Anyway, I suppose you're the young ones now. Here Harry is 15 and Sirius is supposed to be 35/36. What kind of grown-up in his thirties would basically say that a bunch of non-fully educated kids should fight the most dangerous evil wizard in history, while his generation would take a supportive more advisary role? In particular a guy like Sirius who's all about adventure? Makes no sense.

I'm reading OOTP right now and some of the stuft Sirius says or does sounds very immature to me...Just like a man who was imprisoned in his early 20s and has not been able to live, make his own experiences and learning from them. So he, and this is mentioned in the book, basically lives through Harry and struggles between his parental role and his longing for Harry to be like his best friend James. In the past I was always on Sirius side against Molly, but growing older I think she is right with a lot of things.

The clarification of Voldemort’s name pronunciation didn’t exactly come out of nowhere. The first four audiobooks of the series had Voldemort pronounced with a silent ‘T’ and it wasn’t until the fifth book, in which the first film came out at that point, for Scholastic to change how Jim Dale pronounced it because they saw the success of the movies. I’m sure that J.K. Rowling had a part in both the initial decision and the change. With the Snape and Bellatrix running in the same circles one, this can simply mean that they hung out with the same types of people, it doesn’t necessarily mean they hung out with those people at the same time. With the secret keeper one, you are unable to be your own secret keeper in the sense that you can’t hide yourself, so Lily and James could not be their own secret keepers. Dumbledore and Bill are able to be the secret keepers for their own residences, but not for themselves. This is shown in the books when, while explaining how the charm works, Flitwick says that Voldemort could have his nose against their sitting room window and still not see them, showing that the Potters themselves, and not the cottage they were in, were hidden.

9. The part about the pronunciation of "Voldemort" that always got me is, it wasn't some random, out of the blue thing that happened in 2015. I distinctly remember the original, Jim Dale audiobooks pronouncing the name with a silent T, which threw me off for a while, but I had come to accept it by the time the movie came out and threw me off yet again with the hard T. If memory serves, both of the first audiobooks, Philosopher's Stone and Chamber of Secrets, had the silent T pronunciation, and by the time audiobook 3 came out it felt like they'd "given in" to the movie pronunciation.

yes but it's flawed: The secret keeper can share the secret with others which in turn can not share it further, but can enter the secret. James or Lily could have safely told the Member of the first Order of Phoenix and still be as safe as possible. My cannon is that the secret keeper needs to regularly be outside of the secret to keep it up. For the Potters this would have been far to dangerous, but is possible for the others since they are not that active hunted. But then again I don't care about the movies and pottermore so my "canon" most likely is "worng" .

10. Most of what we know about Aberforth came from Dumbledore/his friends, it's possible they were being petty. When we actually talk to him in "Deathly Hollows" he doesn't act dumb. 6. I have no problem with no knowing Nagini was a human, mostly because it's been so long that no one remembers her, and if her human mind is still in there so few people would be able to understand her. 5. On the surface seems dumb but if you wanted to stay in hiding but still wanted someone to be able to send people to you it may seem better for someone else to be the secret keeper. 2. That camera should work just fine. Due to it's age it's mechanical, not electrical, and plenty of cameras even into the 90s didn't use batteries. 1. I know the thought is right up there with thinking about your parents doing it but the thing is even evil people like to get their rocks off. In plenty of places women go right back to work plowing fields after giving birth and I can see Bellatrix very motivated to get right back to the fight. As to where Delphi is during Deathly Hollows, I don't think Bellatrix seems like the maternal type. She'd be likely to just pass it on to someone eles to take care of. Also, Voldemort did seem to have some attachment to Bellatrix at least on some level, because he did rescue her in the ministry and he yelled in rage when he saw her killed by Molly and tried to go after Molly. It's a strange reaction from him, it's not like he had any real reaction about the deaths of any of his other people.

To me Voldemort wanting to have a child makes total sense: A: Voldemort had seen downsides of old age in Dumbledore and perhaps in Nicolas Flamel B: Voldemort know that if his body would die his soul would persist and he could take over other wizards body sharing it with their soul C: Dementors can suck out a soul leaving a living empty body shell behind So the child would not have been destined to anything but a vessel to host Voldemort's soul once the body he had would have starting to get frail. Bellatrix makes sense as Voldemort would consider nothing less than a pure-blood heir (no romance needed). Perhaps at the point when the child would had got it's Hogwards letter Voldemort would had arrived accompanied by a Dementor ready to transfer his soul to "his" new body.

Regarding the secret keeper thing, there is a potentially good reason that Lily and James used someone else as the secret keeper. That reason being that they were meant to never leave the house while Voldemort was after Harry. But they needed a secret keeper that they trusted who could exist outside in order to share the secret as needed, with the likes of Dumbledore and their immediate peers. They obviously could have just told those people the secret first and just went into hiding after, but remember that this was also wartime and they couldn't trust that all their companions and those in on the secret would survive indefinitely while they were stuck inside. But by having the secret keeper outside, able to keep apprised of the situation and move about and give the secret to others, they would be able to ensure that they wouldn't ever need to be forced to leave the house to get information or seek help. Dumbledore didn't need to hide in 12 Grimauld Place, and while Bill and Fleur were hiding in Shell cottage, they were not being actively hunted by Voldemort like the Potters had been, so they have more flexibility and could afford to leave on occasion and serve as their own secret keeper.

Hermione even talks about wizards who time travel kill themselves in confusion and if the future one kills the past, it creates a alternative timeline just as the cursed child. And while 5hour is the safe line for time traveling without danger, it certainly is possible to travel way further without the side effects(aging etc) if the artifact is improved or enhenced like in the cursed child where Nott creates the so called true time turners.

However, try using video tape (magnetic) or digital then everything is overwhelmed. As for other problems related to Fantastic Beasts, that series of films was pretty much a pile of flobber worms and really contributed nothing useful to the series. I regret very much watching them.

I believe in the cursed Child it is explained how they got the time Turner. It had something to do with Scorpius's family friend or something?

Most of these inconsistency is due to the fantastic beasts movies or the cursed child books, both media that were not directly written by J.K Rowling, you can really tell at that point it was no longer about maintain the canon it was to milk the franchise with all these references and cameo canon to the main story, the first fantastic beasts movie worked cause it was mostly on its own as we got a spin off that focused on a new area and lore of the wizarding world without referencing harry potter much at all and than they just had to connect it to dumbledore and Grindelwald and you know what happened after.

When I reread the books over the summer I came across another "the characters are all being really dumb" type of plot hole that's as mind boggling as the secret keeper one. The Goblet of Fire introduces the pensieve. The pensieve was in Dumbledore's office the whole time, the entire series. There's no reason to believe it wasn't there since before the series even started. Yet in The Prisoner of Azkaban, Dumbles never once suggests to Fudge to pull Sirius's memories and see the truth of what happened on the day of Wormtail's alleged death. We can also assume that the Ministry of Magic would have their own pensieve, so why would they not use this clearly well-established lie detector in all criminal cases? Seems like a pretty cut and dry way to rule out which Death Eaters were lying about the Imperious Curse. Even if the Ministry didn't have their own pensieve, Dumbledore's still would've the clearest course of action to prove that Harry wasn't lying in Order of the Phoenix about Voldy's return. TLDR: Book 4 introduces the pensieve, yet none of characters ever once think to use it as a lie detector at any point throughout the series, resulting in several plot holes that range from mildly annoying to downright infuriating.

Yes, that bothers me too. I wonder if Dumbledore is the only person to have one because it does seem likely that the one Dumbledore has is the only one it also seems to be quite an old item though, so I don’t know why the ministry wouldn’t have known about it.

Surprisingly enough, I don't think the idea of Delphini all that impossible. And I don't think that intercorse between Bella and Uncle Vova is that unimaginary although definitely horrible. But why oh why did that put her in 1998? Why not 1979? That would make so much more sense! Bella was much younger and Vova wasn't... well, THAT thing, but still pretty human.

He was too power hungry to do the nasty. He didn’t have that in his mind for one second. He was hopping all over the place looking for the Elder Wand and killing people. Re-read the book. He wasn’t the least bit human.

I see the Nagini-as-a-maledictus issue as a new discovery, not a breach of canon. So we learn something new about the wizarding world. That's what Harry Potterverse is all about, right? And frankly, it very well could explain Filch's obsession with Mrs. Norris. And...well....Nagini was smoking' hot.

Everything about the abomination known as Cursed Child should be moved to the category of Fan Fiction. From the story to the casting, remove all of it.
