But mk8 did not really have support for all 10 years. It had about 3 years of support with dlc and then a remaster and then 5 years of nothing before two years of booster pass.
And is still being sold for $59.99 which is complete BS lol 🤔😳. At least Destiny 2, The Division 2, GTA 5 (for its online) and Rainbow 6 Siege goes on deep sales every other week and those long running games have extremely committed playerbases.
@@ohno5559 mk9 is coming out with next gen obviously. it's clear they think they can get much more mileage out of mk8, especially having RECENTLY added a lot more content. Mario kart is a huge deal, it's more than a spinoff at this point too
So crazy that when MK8 first came out, the big nostalgia crowd-pleaser was N64 Rainbow Road, but by the time the final Booster Course Pass Wave came out the big nostalgia crowd-pleaser was Wii Rainbow Road
wow that's crazy. About 17 years from Mario Kart 64 to the release of Mario Kart 8, and 15 years form the release of Mario Kart Wii to Mario Kart 8's Wii Rainbow Road
Wild how this one game went though one of the lowest points in Nintendo console history and into one of the highest points of Nintendo console history.
Being a true Mario Kart 8 veteran feels weird. Most people who have played have been playing it for nearly half the time I’ve been playing it. God I feel old
Yeah. I still remember the DLC coming out and being so excited to see Animal Crossing characters being in the game. Getting that DLC felt 10x better than getting the BCP.
Mario kart 8 is the weirdest thing ever. It simultaneously feels like I've been playing it since forever but also remember the launch and lead up on the Wii U like yesterday.
MARIO KART 8 is named EIGHT for a REASON. The 8 in the title of the game is supposed to symbolize an infinite symbol ∞ Meaning we're all DOOMED to play Mario Kart 8 until the END OF TIME..
@@mmjahink tell me something. have you stopped playing mario kart 8? or are you just daydreaming in the middle of a race? how do you know you're not playing mario kart 8 right now?
@@adora_was_taken Oh man, you don't even know the troubles I have discerning real life from Mario Kart 8. One time when I went back to my car after getting groceries, there was a banana peel underneath my car that wasn't there before.
i found out recently its illegal to throw turtles out your window at other drivers. Also how do you get just the shell? i think that would make it legal if i actually was able to remove the turtles..
Couldn't believe I went from being the only one with Mario Kart 8 and a Wii U to everyone and their dog having the same game on a different system. Still got me to buy a Wii U years ago
Same here, I had a Wii U for years with Mario Kart 8 being the most played on it. Only this year I found people near me that did own a Wii U but not anymore
Adding onto the Mario Kart formula was a pretty common practice with the last few entries (motion controls, gliding/underwater, zero gravity) but 8’s longevity has made some of these feel like series staples even if they’ve only shown up twice. I wouldn’t be surprised if the gap between 8 and 9 practically kills this habit of adding some new way to race.
I doubt we'll see zero gravity go away. It makes so many more track designs possible, since now you're not limited to a plain map. All of the features you mentioned enrich the game without limiting its design in any way, so I can't see them being removed in the future either. As for a new gimmick, it's almost guaranteed that we will see something. Zero gravity was pretty tame in terms of gameplay changes, and they need to bring in something new to make the next one make sense as a new entry. Otherwise, why would you want to play Mario Kart 9 when 8D has 96 courses? It's extremely unlikely that 9 will match that number, or even 8 classic's 48 (+DLC). Also, you should note that most of the Mario Kart additions have been retained, other than the odd items here and there. The only entry that felt far more experimental and hasn't translated to later entries is Double Dash, with the two drivers and special items mechanics.
@@kellyrousseau3839never said that zero g was leaving! Just that it seems hard to imagine anything else getting added even though MK8 and the “new” zero g is a decade old
As a MK8 player from day 1 on the wii u it sorta brought a tear to my eye (ik thats silly coming from a kids racing game but still) when I saw the credits of the DLC tracks. It's really the end this time and it reminds me of when I beat the special cup for the first time on the wii u and how far the game came. I remember when 200cc got updated into the game
The span of time between the release of the N64 to the release of the Wii is the same amount of time that Mario Kart 8 has existed. Or if you prefer to think about it in more recent consoles, the span of time between the release of the Wii to the release of the Switch.
I remember when Disney XD hosted a Mario Kart 8 tournament, and the contestants were so terrible I found my long lost copy out of pure spite. Good times.
The booster pack did seem like the extra jolt of life the Mario Kart franchise needed if they werent going to make another for a while. Here's hoping that next MK game will be a launch title for the next Nintendo console.
@@leonro Despite being ripped straight out of Tour (Minus new tracks like Yoshi's Island), we still got 48 tracks for just 25$, plus 8 characters. That's a big value for this many returning tracks, in my opinion.
@@monumentvalley6681 But you're paying double the price for it. For $12.5 you're getting 24 tracks (mostly mobile) and 4 characters, which is not that great anymore compared to the initial DLC that had 8 original maps and 8 fully remade ones. Even the "original" 8 Deluxe DLC courses were still made for Tour, they just arrived on mobile later.
the "new" courses are also ported from Tour, they were in Tour's files long before the pass was even announced. plus theyre labelled new in tours files @monumentvalley6681
Scott is the one friend I wish had where I can geek out without feeling like a total nerd, I’m loving Scott’s stash with his honest takes. I love you Scott
We’re talking like they aren’t gonna port 8 deluxe to the new console with all the dlc at launch and NONE of us would complain because that would actually be awesome!
Oh man I'm debating on buying a Switch precisely because it's been 6 years since its launch and there's a new console on the horizon. Like will it have backwards compatability (even if limited, as long as the games I'm interested in are included), will it have those games re-released? Guess I'll have to wait and see
@@steelbear2063Nintendo hired a 3rd party to work on their store. I think there's a high possibility that games will carry forward to the next console without a hitch. They need that to keep up with Microsoft and Sony.
It's funny, cause I remember the discussion in groups I ran with was how silly and out-of-touch the Switch ad felt, and it was, for a lot of us, OUR first taste of being out-of-touch. Cause DAMNED if people didn't just show up to parties or public gatherings with that thing and damned if it didn't draw a small crowd every time!
I brought mine to a highschool party maybe 3 months after it launched and me and a few other people took it out back to huddle around it in the darkness for some multiplayer on that shitty little screen. Must've looked like a drug deal lol.
i used to bring a small lcd TV i bought at the thrift store to play smash bros melee on my wii at school lunch breaks. I was doing table-top mode with my wii and 10 inch LCD. The table top mode makes a lot of sense for people, since we have so many screens a lot of kids might not have their own TV for a console. I was just an adult and out of school so it didn't make sense for me by that point.
Mario Kart 7 introduced the “Lucky 7” item. Which of course changed to the “Crazy 8” in MK8. It’s likely that the item came after the addition of the number in the name, but my guess they’d explain it away this way.
I'll always remember at how jaw dropping this game looked when I first saw it at E3 2013. It's been an amazing ride and it's hard to believe this game is closing in on a decade of being the latest entry.
48:23 - 200cc *was* adjusted in 8dx: you can brake during a drift without losing its sparks now, making it way easier to control without breaking the flow.
Scott truly is at the “back in my day” point. He’s talking about being a teenager working his first job playing online MK8, now I’m doing the same again for the first time in years. The dlc really did bring a lot of people back.
So wild how vividly I remember the first trailer for 8 and the visuals blowing my damn mind. Still have no idea how they made it run and look so gorgeous on the Wii U.
My only real gripe with 8 deluxe after all the dlc and updates is that you can't swap the two items in the slot like in double dash. You don't even use the Y button in a race so why not use it. Yeah it might be awkward to hit it during a race, but I still wish it was possible
You know what I find funny, right after Mariokart 8 came out in 2014 is when I became a big Nintendo fan and started watching the directs and trailers for things. This made realize I have yet to experience the build up for a new Mariokart game.
My first Mario kart hype build up before release was Mario kart 7, I would say Mario kart Wii but i didn’t really care for it at the time for some reason probably because I was like 5 lol
If I could play any game ten years, Mario Kart 8 is a great one. Can’t wait to see where they go from here. Thanks as always Scott! (Although this feels like it could’ve fit in your main channel Mario Kart series haha)
I see he kept with the tactic of his third look at 3D world where he talks about the base game, again, again, for an hour before talking about the metric ton of new stuff for like 10 minutes.
Glad to hear Scott mention the thing about view highlight reel being the default selected option at the end of races, I distinctly remember that from when I first played the game and I also remember being so happy when they finally swapped those around (but also a bit annoyed at first because I'd gotten used to it being the other way so it broke my muscle memory, lol). I don't think I ever realized though that the ability to show the map on the TV was added in an update, I think I just assumed it took me a long time to realize.
I LOVE 200cc. It makes the game actually challenging for a veteran player. Gotta hold Y to accelerate and tap B all the time around corners. Absolutely thrilling!
Even though you covered so much here, I'd love to see a video on the main channel covering the Booster Course Pass. I think a lot of people would love to hear your thoughts on the DLC in-depth and what you though of each course. A video about Mario Kart Tour would be cool too, since the Booster Course Pass is all Tour designs.
I remember one of my friends made tons of spreadsheets for MK8 on the WiiU. Printed out, it took up a binder, full of all the possible cart combinations for optimal gameplay lol.
I think something that would greatly improve the feel of MK (literally) would be ramping up the intensity and feel of the rumble. I want to feel the texture of the terrain I'm driving on, the rumble of the engine, and THE SPEED. MK8/8D is a bit too *smooth* feeling.
I remember my friend and I talking about what cool items could be added for Mario kart 8. One of them was the polterpup from Luigis mansion replacing the boo item and another one was a Piranha plant similar to 3D world. Needless to say our excitement when we saw the Piranha plant announced was incredible!
re: MK7 releasing so soon on the 3ds, mk7 felt rushed as hell and had so much shit missing, and even the real mk8 wii u had a ton of stuff missing and also felt rushed even without bumping up the release
I noticed mario kart 8 is Nintendos gta V both came out around the same time, both had Re-releases, both got extra content years after release , both had bad to subpar spinoff(tour and gta de trilogy), now both games are wrapping up with new titles announced or very likely to get announced soon
Mario Kart 8...what a game. I followed it closely since its unveiling in 2013. After picking it up alongside a Wii U system in summer 2014, MK8 became one of my most treasured games. I like how you talked about the roster. Yeeeeah, back in 2014 the base game had a rocky selection of players. I _love_ the Koopalings, even geeking out from their trailer, but they took up a quarter of the selection. I speculate that they were given priority, seeing that their animations are lovely and they got new voice actors (except Roy). That also explains why Baby Rosalina and Pink Gold Peach were thrown in as fodder, but I digress. Incidentally, nice shout-out to Koopa Kid at 15:14 . I would have absolutely loved seeing my favorite Mario character in Mario Kart 8. But seriously, this game was already a banger on Wii U; the two big DLC packs ensured lots of playtime from me. When it got ported to the Switch as 8 Deluxe, that was cool. Obviously, the big draw to Deluxe was the Battle Mode. I didn't outright despise it on Wii U, but 8 Deluxe's Battle Mode is vastly improved. Like you, I'm drawn more to the core racing, but having an occasional battle is fun to mix things up. And then comes the Booster Course Pass. Everyone was caught off guard from the announcement. Looking into it, it makes sense that Nintendo would want to preserve the city tracks from Mario Kart Tour. Couple that with the dominant sales of 8 Deluxe itself, and there's no need for a completely new Mario Kart on Switch. I enjoy playing the tracks of the BCP, despite the jarring difference in aesthetic. What really sold me were the added characters; seeing Birdo, Petey Piranha, and especially Diddy Kong now in Mario Kart 8 is a dream come true. Even Funky Kong, Pauline, and Kamek are loads of fun. All that said, Mario Kart 8 is truly a special game. Good job covering its 10-year history.
Man, MK8 on Wii U was like the best value. As you said, they had a deal where you get a second game for free. I got Windwaker and became a lifelong Zelda fan from then on. But also, if you bought it on the eshop rather than on disc, you also got Super Mario Kart for free. And then they added DLC where you had an extra half game worth of tracks for not that much. It was the biggest mario kart ever!. AND they added 200cc for free, and most importantly, the weird mercedes benz promotion.
46:47 That carpet isn't on the floor is it, crazy to think all this time it's been on a table, mimicking the sorta "kid on floor playing with toys" feel. (Unless the camera just shook and the floor didnt move and im going crazy) very smart of you Scott lol
10 years, boy time really goes by fast! My Mario kart 8 story: during the 3DS and the Wii U era I could have gotten Mario kart 8 myself on the Wii U but during that time I was a middle schooler and the only games I had were Disney Infinity 2.0, Super Smash Bros and Super Mario 3D Land and much more. Of course during that era I did try out the game myself and it was pretty good but I wasn't that completely interested in it, I could have gotten the game entirely or at any moment during that era but unfortunately there would be times I would have my Wii U privileges taken away when I was young. (But I still had my 3DS with me thankfully) Eventually I would get Mario kart 8 deluxe for the switch and after playing the game a whole lot more I've come to actually appreciate it a lot and It's basically the Super Smash Bros Ultimate of Mario kart from my point of view. Mario kart 8 deluxe is a phenomenal masterpiece!
I’ve only ever played the Wii U version of MK8, and it feels wild to me that the game I bought on its launch day that was originally released on a console nobody bought is now the 6th best selling game of all time
Does anyone else remember Mario kart 8 101? It was a collab with I think GameStop, a web series about a Mario kart 8 instructor who “worked on the set”?
46:27 they also removed the ability to extend boosts (like mushrooms or drift boosts) by constantly hopping from left to right repeatedly, necessary if you wanted to be competitive online and balance changes to items including how they worked (regarding placement and distance from first place) completely.
