Fun fact: the English publication of this book plagiarized a ton from the fan-run Super Mario Wiki, and said wiki compiled a massive list of all of the incorrect info that made it to print before it had been properly edited on the site.
Genuinely tho that'd be a cool Pixel Empire collab; while the board games are INSANE and truly amazing, I'd kill for an "encyclopedia" in the style of the Star Wars Visual Dictionaries for Scott's videos lol
What always suprises me is how natural Scott's sense of humour and timing is even in his unscripted, less edited content like this. It just shows how good Scott is at presenting information in a fun, engaging way.
"See, I always use outdated sources of trivia while studying; I mean, they were right at some point. It's the only way I know everything about the 33 states." - Scott the Woz, Game Show Games
This is why I always consider this official info outdated each time a new game releases or when some months pass, Nintendo could just change their mind one day after the book released and not bother to change it
@@moosesues8887actually Mario went through incredible amounts of thiccening plastic surgery during the mid 90s to show off his depth during the 3D era, ever since then he’s been providing unrealistic expectations for pudgy plumbers everywhere
In case you're wondering, the games excluded in the last few pages are the edutainment games, which includes the Mario's Early Years and Teaches Typing series, as well as Mario's Time Machine and Mario Is Missing, also Hotel Mario They were literally that embarrassed about them, yet they included the small cameo in Earthbound. Nintendo has an insecurity, I see
Actually it's because those games didn't come out in Japan. Dr Mario 64 isn't there, because it didn't release in Japan. But Nintendo Puzzle Collection which includes DRM64 is. And that only released in Japan.
I think it's more because Nintendo themselves never made those games, they just licensed them. They were made during an era when Nintendo was way more liberal with access to their IPs (as compared to now when they will just shut down anything made by fans no matter what). During the early to mid 90s, this was when those games, Hotel Mario and the CDI Zelda games, and the 1993 Mario movie came out, Nintendo had little to no say in what went on in those projects other than giving approval to the rights to use anything related to the IP and they were made by independent developers and publishers.
Did not expect to see Ian Flynn's name in the credits! He wrote the Sonic comics for a long time and recently became an official writer for Sonic games! And I think I own this book! Either I never noticed or I just forgot
This book stole from a wiki. People on Mario Wiki were so excited for this book because there would finally be official names for articles with only foreign or outright made-up names. When the book came out, it had those same names and the writer admitted he just copy and pasted from a wiki anyone can edit.
51:55 BeatNES is the name of the electroplankton (shown in the footage) for anyone curious, it's essentially a very basic NES sample sequencer and one of the sound presets is Super Mario Bros, there's also one for Gyromite of all games as well
I randomly looked at my copy of this on my bookshelf this morning and thought, "Scott the Woz probably has read that entire book like it's a novel." Because you uploaded this today of all days I still don't know if this is a dream or not.
Fun Fact: There’s one version where there’s no advertising removal, and the actual part that can be removed is the yellow one, revealing a blue front with a drawing of Mario, Luigi and Peach
Funny thing about the Super Mario World subtitle being Super Mario Bros. 4: that's actually what it is. For nearly all of its development time, it was called SMB4. It was changed closer to the end of development to SMW.
31:40 The red star should of totally been used in the bowser fight. Like instead of walking around that girant lava cylinder you could fly through it and avoid all the bullet bill. That would of been awesome
Regarding the long jump in 2D Mario, we do get at small taste of what it would be like in Mario maker 2 (with the 3D World style). It would honestly be kinda nice if they added more of those moves which are still relegated to 3D Mario in Wonder, like the crouch jump going higher then a normal one..
By the way, the reason Bowser looks so weird is because the original sprite from Super Mario World was miss colored, this was basically how he was supposed to look like
That was the most legitimate use of the phrase "fun fact" I have ever seen. Only played Sunshine slightly (didn't own it), but wasn't till I saw F.L.U.D.D. mentioned beside a picture of E. Gadd that I even noticed a comparison. Aside from learning that, I just realized that both Luigi and Mario, in their respective GameCube games, used a backpack-like accessory.
PSA: There's already a fanmade 16bit version of Super Mario Land for Super Nintendo in the art style of New Super Mario Bros. Bet you didn't expect this combination of words today!
The original SMB was the culmination of everything that was thought to be capable of pulling off on the Famicoms original format, the cartridge. The end of the 'first' chapter ended up being the beginning for so many great things!
I wish they would release updated sequels every once in a while that accounts for stuff released after the previous one was published while also rectifying the plagiarism issues.
The reason the Japanese Mario Bros cover art looks so weird, is because that was done by Miyamoto. Later, they brought in a professional artist, and with Miyamoto's oversight, they created the Mario designs you see to this day.
The massive book that goes through Super Mario’s history, filled to the brim with info related to the games and such. It’s such a cool piece of media for game collectors.
@@hwdrlkhin a lot of cases the names were just taken from other languages because there wasn't an English name, being used not because fans like them but because it's the only official thing they had to go off of
Having watched the Jan Misali video about how many Super Mario games there are, it's interesting seeing what Nintendo themselves consider a part of the series in comparison to what most people think are in the series.
The overall list from Nintendo isn't really that different from the list of games people acknowledge. The only major discrepancy comes from Super Mario Run, which was released after this encyclopedia
i like this channel for the natural speaking cadence and cool endearing energy. i like the woz for the skits and tongue in cheek yet in your face somehow humour though. so great to have both
I love how you put it about Mario Galaxy 1 & 2. "They are cut from the same cloth but offer something different". So true, it made me think of someone taking a sheet of fabric with a lovely tartan pattern and then they stitch together a scarf and a hat from the same cloth. Two different purposes but the exact same luxurious material and the exact same creator.
I think 64 ages very well. Maybe not visually but its still fun as heck. Just recently saw maximillian play and beat it for the first time and he had a blast. Definetly still fun today
55:00 Cool to see Ian Flynn on a Mario project! I can only imagine the project head saw how much he worked with Sonic's lore and history. Given how convoluted that series can get, I'd say it definitely qualified him for this.
Can anyone tell me why there's no mention of Super Mario RPG in this book? My kids love that game and were disappointed when they couldn't find it in there
As a "local Sunshine hater" I feel like I kinda have to talk about this. It's different for different people of course, but me not liking Sunshine has nothing to do with the completion bonus - in fact, when you've already completed the game, what kind of in-game bonus would even suffice when you probably won't even keep playing the game much after that, without starting a new safe file? To me, the satisfaction of finally getting everything done in a game is its own reward, and a postcard to signify it, while not very flashy, is still all I need to feel like my effort had been ackowledged. But the problem for me is that the path to get there is just filled with so many annoying moments that I just really am unable to bring myself to say that it's been an enjoyable experience. Well, some parts of it were, but other parts just really tested my patience.
Good thing that they consider the Mario Land series canon. It justifies the existence of Wario and Daisy as mainline characters and where they came from (unlike Waluigi).
i got it at a comic shop a couple months after i got my wii u with 3d world. i remember playing 3d world with the book on my lap pausing the game to look at all the new enemies i would find in game in the book.
@@jollamaIt just uses fan-made names for obscure characters from the Mario Wiki. The translator thought it would be better to use names English players would be familiar with as opposed to the Japanese ones. Nothing else in it is plagiarized so I wouldn’t call it “filled with plagiarized info”
it’s so interesting to me that scott is having this realization about how long-standing the mario art style is. i’ve always thought of it as the historic/traditional mario art style, the one they’ve always had but that’s been slowly modernized over time and isn’t used as frequently now, and yet scott is looking at this old art like “wow it’s so modern and current!” i think scott and i are around the same age, so i’m not sure what’s causing the discrepancy. maybe it depends what title you started with? neat
Take a shot every time Scott mentions how he doesn't like New Mario U. I don't think even he realizes just how much he repeats that same opinion, among others. If you're up to date on Scott's Stash, you'll notice so many recurring talking points. That he doesn't like New Mario U, how Nintendo started free-to-start games to shut up investors, how Nintendo released the Circle Pad Pro to shut up people complaining about a second 3DS analogue stick, Nintendo trying to sell an entire console with the Mario 30th anniversary amiibo, he was the first American to work on Sonic, etc.
So many mistakes noticed, and yet I'm barely paying attention as i assumble furniture. The festival _Yume Kōjō_ is *Dream Machine* in English, with _Dream Factory_ being the common fan translation. Similarly, _Famicom Disk System_ is incorrect and just an fan name for it (at least by English speakers) as it is always officially called the *Family Computer Disk System*, as the name "Famicom" was copyrighted by Sharp till sometime after the disk system came out. Then the two made a deal so Nintendo could use the name. The Super Mario themed named in Mother 2 is Japan-only. NoA changed them to Tyler, Holly, Sean, Aziz, Rover, bread, and gaming.
Farrrk the Mario/Wario Land games were my jam back when I was a youngin and I needed a break from Pokemon. Played em all. Same with Mario World on GBA. All classics
its funny how Nintendo will acknowledge damn near anything in the "all games" section Except for Hotel Mario and the edutainment games. I mean for Hotel Mario and a few of the edutainment games you could argue they don't count since they're not on Nintendo consoles but what's Mario is Missing and Mario's Time Machines' excuse other then Nintendo hates them?
I think the reason why super mario usa was ported back to japan was because doki doki panic was a promotional game for the yume kojo festival and nintendo did not own those characters so pretty much every mario 2 rerelease in japan going forward was super mario usa as nintendo doesn't feel it was worth bugging fuji tv to rerelease a game starring characters that were retired after the festival ended when they had a much cheaper alternative to keep the game alive. its similar to how every rerelease of punch out is the mr dream version and not the mike tyson version.
I've got a paperback version of that book that I got at a school book fair at the end of middle school! I was just poking through my bookshelf and flipped through it the other day!
Electroplankton's manual confirms the inspiration for the Beatnes stages are, in the following order - Super Mario Bros., Kid Icarus, NES Collection, and Robot. So yes, it features Mario by name!
