English - Melbourne and the state of Victoria is experiencing some pretty bad weather on July 29th 2017. Strong wind gusts are battering much of the state.
Melbourne Airport is not immune to these conditions with the Airport experiencing persistant 100km per hour wind gust.
These conditions make it difficult for all pilots and those featured here did a great job landing their respective planes.
Singapore Airlines SQ247 A330-343 (9V-SSI)

iatsd There is a documentary that i watched about first 747 flight, when the pilots were landing the 747 for the first time one of the people that was in contact with the pilots over a radio actually kept telling the pilots to check their air speed about 5 times because it looked to everyone on the ground like he was about to fall out of the sky any minute. lol Any big plane like the A380 or 747 looks like it's flying so slow when you look at it from the ground, especially when landing.

Did you notice how long the nose wheel stayed off the ground after touchdown..indicative of heavy winds and a strong lifting body.

They're also landing into 100kph winds, so the ground speed is that much slower.

Fantastic! I once took off from Heathrow in such strong winds that the plane felt like it had tipped on its side, it was terrifying, the curtain had come entirely aside to reveal a steward/attendant with his eyes closed and praying. I cried when I saw that lol, I thought if he’s scared then this is pretty bad!

Different sized Aircraft, differential wind gusts, some of the comments appear to show complete ignorance of the facts that Wind Gusts, loading of the aircraft, landing characteristics are all different, these are amongst the best airlines and crews anyway and the wind was NOT across the runway but straight down...great video however, I wish there were more like it. Thank you.

I simply love how the back row of the A330 main landing gear , touches down first. As i believe the pilot could feel the "touch" through the pilot seat to their assess before they gently lower the nose to place the nose gear down while deploying thrust reversals at the same time. Truly magnificent.

@@martinsworld8678 true enough, as you have feedback and a full field of vision, did the same on a cherokee, practiced on fsx a ton before my first lessons, and found it easier to land than in the sim, even in a cross wind.. feel is everything, having the vibrations, and pressure on the controls , and rudder, feeling the trim come up right, I was way more confident in feeding in rudder trim.. Almost telepathic once you get used to the handling.. most good aircraft are.. flying in a busy pattern, and atc , that's where you earn you money..

At least the gusts seem to be along the runway vs a crosswind as I didn't see much crabbing going on with the landings... Winds like that across the runway are the *really* fun time for pilots

I remember that day (29th July 2017) very well. I caught up with some friends of mine for lunch in Williamstown (the bayside suburb in western Melbourne where the Yarra River meets Port Phillip Bay, for those of you who don't know where Williamstown is located). Williamstown is quite notorious for its howling gales, and the wind there was so strong and bitterly cold that day that you could hardly stand up on your 2 feet. This made something as pleasurable as walking around the streets very unpleasant. It was probably worse in Williamstown that day than what it was at Melbourne Airport.

It gets very windy out this way. It used to be every so often but now even 50km plus winds is a regular occurance for the Airport.

Coming into Melbourne one night some years ago on a Compass flight (that's going back!) with very windy conditions, the aircraft felt like it was floating and wouldn't loose attitude. I noticed we were to high coming over the threshold and along the runway. I knew if it didn't get down soon we'd run out of bitumen!!. Suddenly the pilots opened the taps and we climbed back into the air. The look on some passengers faces was one of horror and fear. I tried to calm the guys closest to me saying the pilots had it under control and this was a normal procedure for a very windy high approach. Had to gulp when some time later a very nervous Captain came on to apologize for the go around!! One good thing that came out of it for me was we got a grandstand view of the city whilst waiting to land....

We can see at 3:17 that the wind is almost parallel to the runway, so the cross wind component is small, so easier than full cross wind, especially they always land against the wind!

Beautiful landings, no question, but 100 km/h is already hurricane speed and the airport would simply be closed if the wind were that strong, especially "persistent" wind. That tree in the beginning, for example, could be uprooted with less than that. There were some up draughts and some crosswind, but at ground level you can see that the trees on the other side of the runway are almost still. Plus, most planes shown were A330s, a model notorious for its large winglets. Winglets are great fuel savers on cruise, but they also make planes a bit wobblier on landing when there's crosswind.

100km/h is 54Knots and its well beyond operational capability and safety standards of any passenger airliner. May be 54 knos were at 200 feet or above but form last 100 feet to touch down Surface winds seems to far less thats why planes are allowed to land.

Depends what direction the wind is from. Says it was from the NW so the planes would have landed on RWY 34, making most of the wind a headwind. The tricky part is when that wind is mostly crosswind, which would be above the airliners’ limit. For example, a Boeing 777’s crosswind limit is 38 kts.

The smoothest landing is when there is no tire smoke because the pilot uses the wind to touch the tarmac like a gentle kiss. The smoothest landing i ever had was in an Air Canada Constellation in 1969 when we landed in extreme winds and rain. It was so smooth, we didn't even know that we were already down. Maybe it was those three tailfins....LOL

Welcome to Melbourne, so windy you dont even get smoke on the tyres when landing!
@Schony747

It's also very confusing as it doesn't look that windy either.

Were those landing roll outs very short due to the headwind and thus slower approach speed (ground speed)? They seemed really short for those big birds, but my perspective may be off. Either way, superb video and really nice landings to observe, thanks very much for uploading this!

The wind ws pretty well head on which explains what you just said.

Looked like the wind was pretty much down the runway which made it a lot easier. Also the wind lowers the touchdown speed and the landing distance.

I use a tripod and Panasonic HD camera. Have a look at Melbourne HD aviation. Matts channel is great and he uses tripod and a similar camera. Good luck with the channel.

Tammy Adams it’s 100 kilometers per hours, not miles. If it was 100 miles per hours, no planes would land

Do the a380 thrust reverses work only in the middle engines ??? I've seen the 747 using 4 of them but never seen an a380 using 4
@Schony747
@Schony747 4 года назад
It's actually a design with the A380. Only two engines use the reverse thrusts.

Should be gusting in axis of runway, no problem whatsoever even with a small place, which is the case in this footage. Unlike off axis needs strong skills !

Different engine manufacturer has their own different mechanism in the reverse thrust function. Every model of commercial jet provides several certified engine type as option for customers to choose.
