100% PROOF That “Charasmatic Tongues” Is NOT Biblical… (Speaking in Tongues)
The "speaking in tongues" that we see in Charasmatic/Pentecostal churches today are NOT biblical.
This video shows that this theology is being read into the Bible, rather than reading the Bible in proper context. Also, tongues is NEVER used for private prayer in the Bible!

Three things to note… 1) Tongues in the Bible are NEVER (not even once) anything other than another human language. 2) Tongues in the Bible are NEVER prayed privately, only between an individual and God. They are always spoken/prayed in the presence of others, FOR their edification. 3) The Bible teaches that tongues must ALWAYS have an interpreter, in EVERY instance!
@shaunhunterit342
@shaunhunterit342 4 месяца назад
On point 3, if this is an intelligible human language, such as me as an Englishman speaking Chinese although I've never learned the language, why would an interpreter be needed? The whole point of what happened in Acts 2 is that people from various parts of the world WOULD have needed an interpreter to understand what these Galilaeans were saying, but because of God giving them the ability to speak other languages, an interpreter was not needed.

The Bible calls tongues "the tongues of men and angels" I Corinthians 13:1. "For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries." I Corinthians 14:2 If tongues were readily understandable they would not need interpretation. Mark 16:17 says, "And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues;"

Your thumbnail cracked me up. That kind of speaking has always made my hair stand up, as a non-believer and now as a Christian. The first church I went to after accepting Christ was Pentecostal. It was a tiny congregation, but everyone spoke in tongues throughout every service (the pastor would do it maybe once per service). I was led to believe the gift of tongues was automatic at baptism, so when I was baptized and didn't receive it, I definitely thought something was wrong with me! Thank God for the Bible, where I eventually read that's not how tongues works. I appreciate you for bringing more light to this subject.

The apostle Paul taught against everybody speaking in tongues IN CHURCH, teaching that only two or three speak in tongues IN CHURCH so that those tongues could be interpreted and thereby have the whole church edified by the message, rather than just the tongue speaker being edified (built up in faith). Paul also wrote in his 1 letter to the Corinthians that 'not everyone speaks in tongues' 1 Cor 12:30. So every Pentecostal or Charismatic church who come together and speak in tongues are going against Paul's teaching on church function.

Hey brother I don't quite see it the way you do on this subject , I 100 % agree there Is false tongues in the charismatic church just like there are false doctrines , false teachers etc etc , but I do believe the bible shows there are different tongues , the bible says in 1 corinthians 14 -2 for one who speaks in a tongue speaks to God not to man for no one understands him , so that can't be a known language in this case if no one understands him I do think certain tongues are known languages, and others are to be interpreted, others are for private prayer , in 1 corinthians 12- 10 it says various kinds of tongues , and I don't think the bible is saying when you speak in tongues and are building yourself up it is a bad thing paul goes on to say the one who prophesies is greater because it builds up the church , in Jude 1-20 encourages us to build ourselves up in our holiest faith by praying in the Holy spirit . Obviously I know certain people my see it different but I believe we are still all brothers and sisters in Christ I just don't let false tongues , false teachers , prophets etc stop me personally believe what scriptures I think show an teach 🙏

The reason no one understands him in 1 Cor 14:2 is because there is no interpretation. If someone in the room spoke that language (or had the gift of interpretation) they could interpret it. Paul is saying WITHOUT interpretation, no one understands it. That’s the context. Not that it’s not a language that anyone in the world speaks!! I would say that various kinds of tongues means just that; various types of (human) languages. Not all tongues are in one specific human language.

@lionoffireraw it doesn't make sense to me that tongues always has to be a known language in acts 2 it was tongues for a sign to unbelievers so it was a known language yet in corinthians paul talks about praying in tongues 14-14 , he speaks about speaking in tongues in the church so now to believers and clarifies this by saying someone needs the gift of interpretation to understand that type of tongue so that cannot be a known language otherwise you wouldn't need the gift of interpretation? Obviously in acts 2 the unbelievers didn't have the gift of interpretation they understood because it was a known language, so if the believers in the church hear a tongue and nobody understands it unless they have the gift of interpretation then that doesn't sound like a known language if it was a known language that would make the gift of interpretation worthless , and listening to people like David wilkersom , dereck prince , carter conlon , these people love and preach context and they helped me greatly understand what paul was writing to us but I respect you see it different brother just giving you my understanding like you are to me God bless 🙏

Thank you for your comments. There is just no hint of any secret language. This is something that came into existence around 1900, and has been inserted into peoples understanding of the text. It makes perfect sense for someone to speak in tongues in a human language, that no one in the service speaks, and then have someone with the gift of interpretation of that language. In no way is this negated by the gift of interpretation. My issue is that there simply is no occurrence in the Bible of anyone speaking tongues other than a known human language. As I demonstrated in the video, those passages which people used to suggest it is a prayer language, are easily explained away in the context of the passage. I believe that many people today are sincere in there seeking, and experiences, but the Bible simply does not communicate that anything other than human language even exists.

i understand that there is a lot of abuse and if you speak in a service in tongues it should be with an interpretation for you should build up the church, to boast or to exalt yourself above others is a problem of the flesh. I am grateful to speak in tongues it has often builded me up, when I did not know what to pray, it builded me up and gives me strength but it is not an emotional high and certainly does not mean I am some sort of an elite. but it does certainly not mean I am influenced by a demonic spirit. I asked god for it , and he would not have given me a bad spirit.

1 Corinthians 14 verse 18 says “I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than you all” and verse 19 adds “Yet IN THE CHURCH I had rather speak five words with my understanding”. So Paul differentiated between praying privately in tongues versus speaking in church. So saying this has nothing to do with a private prayer language is false.
@lionoffireraw
@lionoffireraw 4 месяца назад
No, he is talking about speaking in the church WITHOUT an interpreter where no one can understand (this is the entire context of the chapter). The contrast to this is speaking in a church/public ministry WITH an interpreter, or someone who understands the tongue. This isn’t implying private tongues at all!! You’re reading that into the text when it isn’t there.

From someone who has experienced some surprising things with my prayer language I will list these two instances. A young lady who taught multiple languages was in a car with a group of us abruptly started shouting at me as several of us were singing a worship song that was on the radio. We were alternating singing in tongues and in english. The driver stopped to see if she was ok and checked to see why she was yelling. She said I can understand what you're saying! You are singing about the Lordship of Jesus! She told me to do it again but I told her i didn't know what i was singing or how make it happen but we could just go back to singing and see what occurred. After a very short time It happened again and we all rejoiced together. I experienced another time when I was speaking to a newer convert than I was, and as we began to praying tongues we both found ourselves saying the same thing for multiple phrases, ( sentences) until we found ourselves rejoicing in the Lord. We stopped stared again and within a few seconds again began saying exactly the same wording tongues at the exactly same time. What a wonder. I think the Lord wants us to be able to be more free to experience His Holy Spirit in multiple ways. I haven't given the scriptures because others have already listed them. The church has been all lecture and no lab for far too long. I would love to have a bible study in which we were able to talk about some of these things more freely. PS thank you for posting opinions that dont exactly line up with yours. I really respect that.

Brother, you are 100% right. The first instance ever recorded in the Book of acts about speaking in tongues was the fact the Jewish Believers in Jerusalem were now speaking in the languages of those people that came from other nations. They did not know what they were speaking but those from other nations could hear that they were speaking in in their language. There's the foundation of speaking in tongues. Its a known language to the hearer but not to the speaker (The speaker will only understand what he speaks if God gives him the interpretation). All these gibberish I hear in the church is no speaking in tongues...its just gibberish.

Thank you. This has been one of the most challenging things to pinpoint truth on for me as one who grew up in a very chaotic charismatic atmosphere. It was such a painful thing to try to push through the clutter to find the simple gospel message as a child and young adult. After finally leaving that mess behind and spending time seeking what the Word actually says, the conclusions I have found there are confirmed in what you have shared here. It is so helpful to hear others say it. As to being a cessationist or a continuist...After I first walked away, I ran as far from any talk of gifts as I could out of fear of being sucked back in. However, after much study and a lot of prayer, I have come to a more balanced thought in recent years. I cannot turn aside from the truth gifts still exist, but I now see that the main problem in the old teachings I once sat under was that they prescribed a manufactured, one-size-fits-all approach. It was a vanity-filled, me-centered exercise. I now recognize God is sovereign. He gives and moves as HE wills. His PERFECT will. Never our own. The crux of the problem is when we forget that.

Yes!! I have spent the last couple of years trying to find a video that perfectly represents what I see scripturally and this is it to a t! I've always said I'm not full cessationist and I'm not fully continuationist, but really what I mean is that I don't see these gifts happening today like they were in biblical times, and what I do see happening is not biblical at all. I do believe these gifts are happening today, however I have yet to see personally, like you said, where people and churches are using the gifts in the correct and biblical order. I used to be 100% cessationist until the Lord gave me visions, and then another time when my husband spoke in tongues. It was a time our family was under severe spiritual attack, and we were all praying in the livingroom together. All of a sudden in the middle of my husband's prayer he suddenly said something in tongues, very briefly, and you could literally feel the demonic presence leave our house, like a wind rushing by us. I remember us looking at eachother like "what just happened👀" because it wasn't something he'd planned to do or had ever done in the past. But right after that we were able to find out what words he spoke, and it was in Hebrew. So yes, I totally stand with you on this. I also now believe the gifts are happening today, however it seems they are rarely happening in the biblical order and very rarely do you see it happening in such order.

@@lionoffireraw Well first of all, this is the first time I’ve ever heard a professing continuationist reject the “prayer language” concept when referencing tongues. To be honest, I don’t know if I’m ready to believe your exegesis on that. But I will be praying. For years, there was a certain effortlessness when I would pray in tongues in the context of my prayer time. I was encouraged to do so by my disciplers. I experienced many supernatural occurrences and deliverances during these times that pointed directly to scripture, and remember feeling so unbelievably blessed. Times where I struggled with sin so bad, I would break out the tongues, and a praise and worship song or Bible verse would pop out, and it was tremendously encouraging and got my mind back on the Lord… and to think I could have been influenced by something like the Kundalini spirit seems quite shocking. For years, I had friends who were 5-point Calvinists insist I was only speaking babble, that tongues are not for today, and the tongues I spoke were not biblical. I wanted to believe them, but couldn’t, because these people were *SO* dogmatic. No truth in love whatsoever. The words that come out of my mouth when I pray in tongues are not babble, but are languages I’ve been able to identify over the years as I’ve become exposed to Hebrew and Greek translations of the Bible, and as I’ve come in contact with native speakers of those languages. But these are only experiential “evidences.” They are not proof. The Bible is proof of what is true and not true. Still, there is one experience involving the private use of tongues I would like to share with you that stood out to me. Okay, so we can all agree that the doctrines of “slain in the spirit” and being “drunk” in the Holy Spirit are false (I’ve denounced the charismatic church and most of its doctrine by the way). Well, one morning I was excited to spend time with the Lord, and of course, tongues eventually came into play, and gradually as things came to a lull, my body began to go dead weight. I thought I was being pressed into the bed I was kneeling against. Pretty soon, I lay silent, feeling TONS of peace, I go to stand upright, and I stumble around like a drunk person. I telephone one of my friends, slurring my words like a weirdo, and they were like, “Scott, it sound to me like you’re drunk in the Holy Spirit.” The only time I’d ever witnessed that sort of thing was in church meetings and I really didn’t think anything of it. It just was whatever it was. Then to have it happen to me during a time I’m genuinely trying to spend time seeking the presence of God-ALONE- was quite startling (I lived with a group of raging alcoholics at the time and was incredibly uncomfortable. Definitely seeking God and his comfort). Anyway, to look back on that and think I could have been under the influence of a demonic spirit makes me feel a little betrayed by God. Why would he send these charismatic Christians into my life to mentor me, only for me to become deceived? By the way, I was not fooled by their doctrine on female pastors. They were very dogmatic about that, and I smelled a rat, as I did with the word of faith stuff that they would sometimes spout off. My parents didn’t go to church, and these people were responsible for bringing me up in the ways of the Lord. I now renounce the charismatic church, and feel quite bitter for having been influenced by them. After they began ordaining women, they began sliding leftward, and now suddenly homosexuality (a sin I’ve repented of) is okay… or at least, they don’t like to dwell on that subject. *All* 3 of the people have become deceived, and one even died having gone back to his sin. I was orphaned so to speak, and these are people who the Lord used to develop my prayer life and my doctrine. Jesus used to be God in the charismatic church. Now humans are god. I know I already said it, but I have to say again that I feel very betrayed, and not sure what to believe now about the doctrine of tongues. It’s quite unsettling, really. Jesus is still my Savior and my God. The essential doctrines are settled as far as I’m concerned. Just really upset at being jerked around by Foursquare and Assemblies of God (I don’t mind calling them out, as they are apostate, and need to be marked and avoided). Sorry for the soliloquy. My real name is Scott. I live in the states.

@@lionoffireraw Sorry, by the way, about the “drunk in the Spirit” part. I’ve never felt more at peace and carefree than that day. It was a very scary time for me, as I was living with drunks, and I wanted to know the Lord was there. I couldn’t have cared less about some kind of kooky “experience.” I wasn’t interested in that. As the years wore on, I became sick of the wet noodle doctrines that the charismatic church was teaching, and finally found a great church that teaches expositorally. Anyway, I have thought in recent years that while slain in the Spirit and “drunk” in the Spirit are indeed false doctrines, they do seem to be experiences that parallel with a lot of scripture. I just wonder if, when the Lord wants to punctuate a Biblical principle in the life of a believer, perhaps these things do happen? I won’t die on that battlefield, by the way. Lol

Thank you so much for opening up. It sounds like you’ve been able to identify a number of these false doctrines, despite pressure to the contrary from people in those churches. I also reject those doctrines, and I also reject Calvinism too. It is completely unbiblical. It’s actually insane, and perverts the character of God. I don’t believe in such things as being drunk in the spirit. One of the fruits of the Holy Spirit is self-control, so it makes no sense that someone would be stumbling around and slurring words if they were under the influence of the Holy Spirit. I don’t think those experiences have any parallels with the experiences in the Bible, if you look closely. You certainly shouldn’t feel betrayed by God. All sorts of people come across our path, and it’s up to us to be able to discern truth from error. His Spirit has helped you to discern much error already. Sadly many people get stuck in this type of error their whole lives. As for tongues, I just don’t see it as a private prayer language, biblically. It seems to me like people have injected their own theology into the text. IMO, those passages are easily interpreted without anything to do with a private prayer language. I guess there are some things for you to consider and to pray about after watching this video.

Why is it that when you think you’ve found an all round, sound in doctrine teacher, something pops up that disappoints and bewilders. Acts 2 doesn’t say that the tongue speakers were speaking known languages. It says ‘every man HEARD them speak in their own language’. And what about 1 Cor 14? The people were excited and like selfish little children with a new toy, so Paul had to rein them in and give them some teaching on how to conduct themselves in church with this new gift. Think of others, don’t hog the soundwaves, wait your turn, edification of others more important, wait til you get home and then talk to God, He will understand because your spirit is praying not your understanding. Brother I know you’re sincere but please hear me. You are the one who prays in tongues, not God. It’s a gift He has given you. Look at Paul’s language. Only with an interpreter, two or three at most. These imply voluntary action. It’s amazing how this is still being attacked from inside the church today. Bless you.
@lionoffireraw
@lionoffireraw 3 месяца назад
There’s simply no explicit example in the Bible of anyone praying “privately” in “tongues.” Nor is there any explicit example whatsoever of tongues being anything other than communicating in another human language. This is all a recent invention. I know that you are most likely sincere, and genuinely believe that your experience is real, but sadly it’s not biblical. There are other religions and philosophies that also talk in these “babble tongues,” and believe what they are doing is real because they “feel it.” Tongues is a real gift today, but it’s not something used in private (even the praying in 1 Cor 14 is IN THE CHURCH), nor is it this form of unbiblical “babble.” It’s understood as other human languages. I know it’s hard to let go of things, but this teaching at the very least, demonstrates that there is zero example biblically of tongues used in private prayer, or spoken in a way that isn’t understood by the hearer as another human language. So the entire theology is being READ INTO THE TEXT!!

Thank you for speaking on this. While I do believe the gift of tongues is still in use and have spoken in genuine tongues when God has commanded me, I just cannot be around those who claim to have this spiritual gift yet speak without an interpreter. My worst experience was when I was in a young adult group session at a church I thought God may want me to attend, and the group leader started speaking in what she supposed was tongues. Within 30 seconds I felt this demonic, hateful thing lunge at me from where she was sitting, and felt it try to hurt me. To this day I still don't entirely know what to make of that experience and of that person's faith, but I do know with absolute certainty that that spiritual entity was not of God and that it wanted to hurt me, but God protected me and made it very clear that He did not want me there.

The act of chanting Babel when praying is written no where in God's word. It's a tradition made up by men. Preacher starts shouting out babbling sounds when delivering a sermon do it to show off, and it does no one any good. Paul even said in Corinthians if you don't have a translator present don't prophecy. People who do this go to great lengths in twisting and adding to scriptures. Everything a Christian does should be done to glorify God and spread his message. Babeling tongues accomplish nothing and do no one any good.❤️🤟🏼✌🏼💪🏼🙏🏼

Hello Matt (I finally heard your name on a video. I'm Loren.) I share many of your concerns over tongues, but I'm keen not to throw out the baby with the bathwater. If someone is genuinely speaking in tongues, but they're speaking in strife; and someone else is sincerely trying to please God, but it doesn't sound real -- which one do you think God would respect more? As a young Christian, I became interested in speaking in tongues, but I prayed God would give me interpretation also, so I would know I wasn't kidding myself. He gave me eight lines, and I wrote it all down. I have a background in languages and also in cryptology, so even though I didn't know what it said, I could tell it was a real language. I even began to work out some of its grammatical rules and some basic sentence structure. After a few days, I felt that that God gave me the interpretation of the first line only. Then the second, etc, one line at a time. When I reached the last line my hearts nearly sank, because I suddenly realized that one of my rules and the interpreted words on that line, if they were true, would also have appeared back in the first line - and by then the dye was cast. Imagine my astonishment when I saw that everything still held up perfectly. I shared the message in my group the next time we met. Now I will admit that I am still shy over tongues, because there is so much abuse. But here's a couple more points based on Human limitations. It takes a tremendous amount of faith to interpret, when you know that someone else in the room may understand this tongue as their natural language, and contradict you. Second. When someone does speak out and you feel you have the interpretation, they need to allow you the space for it. I well recall once when someone was speaking in tongues, and I knew that I knew I was getting every word of it, and I was ready -- but then he kept going and going, and never shut up. I just couldn't keep up with all that, to remember so long a message in one take. After a while, the quality dropped off into some sort of babbling, but still kept going -- but the damage was done. The opportunity was lost. One of the chiefest dangers I see in tongues and interpretation, is the mistaken notion that tongues are the same thing as prophecy. So the interpretation comes out, "Yea, My Children thus says the Lord." But this cannot possibly be the case, since 'He who speaks in an unknown tongues speaks not unto men, but unto God." The danger appears because, unlike prophecy which is judged, interpretations that come forth as a word from God that is not being judged. I am under the impression that if we take God seriously in the safeguards He applies with spiritual gifts, then we will see just how seriously He works through them. When I look comprehensively at what the Bible says about tongues, I reached the conclusion that, structurally speaking, they are similar to psalms. They 'declare the mighty works of God,' they 'bless in the spirit.' they 'give thanks well.,' This is why their interpretation edifies the church; and this is why the individual still feels edified in his spirit, even without the interpretation (a point on which we do disagree.) In fact, Paul says that we may simply share a psalm in our natural language, just as we would share a spiritual gift. No one seems to do that any more, but it's really beautiful when they do. You made many fine points in this video. It's hard being controversial. Thanks for making it.

I've written a paper when I was doing my theological studies. While it's true that the tongues in the Bible were actual languagws, the "charismatic tongues" & some manifestations of the spirit are real. If you look into church history & how it all got started, you can't really explain them away. John Wesley, a logical & methodical man led meetings that involved such spiritual manifestations & he never condemned it. I do however disagree with how the Pentecostals ran away with proof texting. But that doesn't mean the gift of such tongues are fake. We need to leave room for the Spirit & remember that it's only one of the many gifts of the Spirit, it's not a sign of salvation or more maturity/special/anointed. It's the only personal gift that does nothing for the church unless there is an interpreter (even that needs to be careful). No gift is given to all & not all Christians are given every gift. 1 cor teaches this clearly. So don't throw the baby out with the water.

Another important video Matt. Those in the charismatic movement need to heed your message. It is sad that those who do not speak in tongues are considered by Charismatics, as not to have received the gift of the Holy Spirit. God does not need to have Believers speak in some 'heavenly' language, He is *perfectly happy for us to speak to Him in the language of our nationality. I have heard in very *rare dangerous situations, some Believers have been able to communicate in the language necessary to resolve a situation, - a language unknown to them, - but an earthly language. These are miracle situations, endowed by God.

Matt, your story is very similar to mine. I could "speak in tongues" when I was a brand new believer. Thought it was a prayer language but I realized that I was just making sounds and it felt wrong. I told the Lord I was just going to pray in English because He knew English and that if He wanted me to speak in tongues then He would reveal it to me in His word. However the more I studied the more I became convinced that tongues were not a private prayer language but a real actual language. I am now a cessationist in the sense of the sign gifts being for the apostolic foundation of the church.

I agree with most of that, although the Bible doesn’t make the distinctions apostolic gifts. 1 Corinthians 13 is clear that the gifts will pass away (including tongues and prophecy) when “the perfect comes.” This is referring to our glorified state with Christ “when we will see in FULL.” But I have never seen those gifts in operation. Sadly there are many fake manifestations, but that doesn’t change what 1 Corinthians 13 tells us.

4:11 seriously? Paul said he prayed it more than anyone, and that meant he prayed it alone, seeing he was the one teaching that he doesn’t want people speaking in tongues in the church in the public setting, but prophesy - this by implication meant that he MUST have spoke it alone in prayer to God. When I first got saved, my husband and I went to a church, and I wasn't aware that it was Pentecostal. We went for a few weeks and nothing odd happened, my husband even got saved in that church. But the last time we went, I practically ran out of there. From the moment we got there, I had a major conflict going on inside me that I just couldn't shake. Believe me, I tried, because I started feeling guilty for having the urge to leave. I became nauseous, had a headache, and something inside of me kept saying, "You don't want to be here, you have to leave." I couldn't figure out why I was feeling that way. So during the worship service, while most of the congregation was standing and singing, I sat down and prayed. I asked God, is this Your Holy Spirit trying to tell me something? Or is it my human nature or Satan trying to push me out? I asked for His guidance, and I thanked Him. As I was getting to the end of my prayers, the pastor went up front and told the congregation that he could feel the Holy Spirit moving through, that he has the gift of speaking in tongues, knows a few others who have the gift, and then he started speaking a whole other language. I KNEW at that moment that I had to get out of there. I started urgently hitting my husband's arm and told him, "We gotta GO." We left immediately. I was shaking like a leaf and I felt like crying, and I have NEVER had that experience in church before. It shook me to my core, and I'll never forget it. Within minutes of us leaving, I felt perfectly fine. Strangest church experience of my life.

I agree with much of what you have said. It's hard to know what tongues are actually from the true Holy Spirit. When GOD brought me out of multiple doctrines: charismatic, Hebrew Roots, and new age, He gave me a dream about a serpent spirit with the name "kundalini". I didn’t know what that was. GOD showed me over the time after that what that spirit is. He revealed the Kundalini and Shekinah false spirits to me and freed me from those doctrines. Satan comes as an angel of light and his ministers as ministers of righteousness. This false spirit can make you feel so good and so peaceful. But eventually after a time, you will start to have different kinds of torment in your life and body. In many false religions there are kinds of "tongues" with these two spirits as the spirit behind them. I stopped speaking in tongues because I didn’t want it to be possibly bringing back a false spirit.

There is absolutely nothing mysterious about Biblical "tongues" - and there is only one type - when referring to something spoken, they are nothing more than real, rational language(s); usually, but not always, unknown to those listening to them, but always known by the speaker(s) - it’s their native language (in some cases, it is a language the speaker has learned). In contrast, the “tongues” Pentecostal and Charismatic Christians are producing today is an entirely self-created phenomenon. It is non-cognitive non-language utterance; random free vocalization based upon a subset of the existing underlying sounds (called phonemes) of the speaker’s native language, and any other language(s) the speaker may be familiar with or have had contact with. It is, in part, typically characterized by repetitive syllables, plays on sound patterns, alliteration, assonance, and over-simplification of syllable structure. It is also interesting to note that any and all phonological rules (rules governing how sounds are put together in a given language - what is allowed and what is disallowed) governing a speaker's native language, will _also_ govern their tongues-speech. Further, this subset of phonemes mentioned above typically contains only those sounds which are easiest to produce physiologically. Occasionally some speakers will use two or more subsets of phonemes to generate glossolalia, producing what, to them, sounds like two (or more) distinct “tongues languages”, thus claiming to be able to speak in “divers tongues”. There is absolutely _nothing_ that “tongues-speakers” are producing that cannot be explained in relatively simple linguistic terms. Conversely, when it comes to something spoken, there are absolutely _no_ Biblical references to “tongues” that do not refer to, and cannot be explained in light of, real rational language(s), though it may not be the explanation you want to hear, and it may be one which is radically different from what you believe, or were taught. _Nowhere in the Bible is modern tongues-speech advocated or evidenced._ “Praying in the Spirit” does _not_ refer to the words one is saying. Rather, it refers to how one is praying. In the three places it is used (Corinthians, Ephesians, and Jude), there is absolutely zero reference to 'languages' in connection with this phrase. “Praying in the Spirit” should be understood as praying in the power of the Spirit, by the leading of the Spirit, and according to His will. I'm not doubting or questioning the 'tongues experience'; glossolalia as the spiritual tool that it is, can be very powerful and, for many people, the experience is profound. As one commenter put it, “Speaking in tongues distracts the ego/analytical/conscious mind while leaving the subconscious (the heart) wide open to import the divine." Both the spiritual and physical benefits of using this tool are also well documented. Again though, it is important to note that this same statement can be made for virtually _any_ other culture that practices glossolalia. Religious and cultural differences aside, the glossolalia an Evenki Shaman in Siberia, a vodoun priestess in Togo and a Christian tongues-speaker in Alabama are producing are in no way different from each other. They’re all producing their glossolalia in the exact same way; they just have different explanations and beliefs as to why they’re doing it, and where it comes from. It is only in certain Christian denominations where is it construed as something it never was. ‘Tongues’ (read, *‘languages’* ) - the divine gift, is the God given ability to effortlessly learn to speak and be understood through real-language barriers. It is not xenoglossy, nor is it modern tongues-speech. As an aside, I am a linguist and do not identify as either a so-called continuationist or cessationist. Since Biblical tongues refer to real, rational languages, obviously "tongues" have not ceased - as dar as I can tell, people still speak.

I fully agree with you, I spoke in "tongues" babling ones for over 20 years, i began seeking The Lord on this and He showed me exactly what He showed you! Now it is written that the gifts are irrevocable right? But The Lord led me to repent of babbling and so i did, they gone, i cannot even imitate them.. so then if it were a true form of tongues i doubt they would have left...also, when the disciples asked Jesus " teach us how to pray" then He being a triune God taught them what we call The Lords prayer and before He said the prayer He said don't babble like the pagans do. Now some will say that babble means to go on and on and on, well babbling in tongues is the same repetitions over and over again! These are my thoughts on it, but honestly i know when i repented of speaking in babbling tongues i was delivered of mysticism! I have learned more than i ever had before in His Word without the confusion of mysticism!

Two questions, if the gift of tongues is an intelligible human language that the speaker does not know but the Spirit gives them the ability to speak (for example me as an Englishman speaking Chinese although I've never learned the language): 1. why is there any mention at all of a gift of interpretation or of there being a need for an interpreter? The people in Acts 2 did not need an interpreter when they were merely hearing their own language spoken. 2. Why would there be any need for this as an ongoing gift in a local church community, to the point that it would be spoken of as something to edify the body? How often would people who spoke foreign tongues be present in these local church communities, to the point that it would even be useful? If God was to give me the gift to speak Chinese for example without ever learning it, surely it would be of little use here in England and he would only give me such a gift so that I could go and use it in China.

It does seem a bit strange in that sense. But it would be exactly the same if it was an unknown/heavenly language (which it isn’t). In both instances someone would be speaking a language that no one knows, and someone would be interpreting it. It is a bit confusing to me as to why this would be needed, as opposed to the Acts 2 situation, where it is clear.

@@lionoffireraw you don't need an interpreter to understand my words in this comment because we are both English speakers. The people in Acts 2 didn't need an interpreter because they were hearing in their own language. I'm asking you to explain exactly how this gift of interpretation works. Who needs the interpretation and why? According to your position, the very reason the gift of tongues exists is to eliminate the need for an interpreter. The people in Acts 2 would have needed someone to interpret the words of the Galileans but God supernaturally eliminated that need.

A hypothetical would be if I’m at church and someone speaks tongues in French. If no one there speaks French, someone with the gift of interpretation of tongues would be needed to interpret the French tongues to English. Why God would make someone with the gift of tongues speak in French in that instance, I don’t know 🤷‍♂️

The interpreter needs if the people in the church doesnt know the language. Those whom knows the language doesnt need interpreter. By the way I think that speaking in tongues is not always an unlearned tongue but learned languages by the helping of the Spirit. Not all gifts are hyper mega supernatural like healings. For example the gift of administration is a simple helping gift which can be learned but by the helping of the Spirit that would be awesome gift for the Church. So likewise speaking in tongues.

@lionoffireraw - This says the gifts are not all continuing because false teachers and doctrines say they do. Paul says what is in God continues, and true gifts at any time ONLY come from God. This is rare and finite. We reject humanism in this regard as a result. There is no weakness in knowing what is all obvious. Less than a fraction of one percent know what true love is. Those in elitism understand indoctrination because they do it through freemasonry/illuminati in the world. I even have had conversations in the past briefly where some in certain church groups are friends with these people in private confidence. I'm going to bed. Trust in the One who will never pass away. We are but filthy rags, and yet He gave it all for us and the Kingdom of God.

@lionoffireraw - I have 1st Corinthians 13 on my wall. I also don't think RU-vid deleted all my comments either, since some are still here. But I digress. I stated the obvious on everything. I am not asleep at the wheel, so to speak. Corinthians is overall written in relevance to God's true nature, conviction, and wisdom. It is in no way about the gifts continuing, because not everyone will be healed, be rich in money and have a perfect life. Tell me one instance in any church which teaches that as absolute in today that all interpretation of the gifts experienced in the room in Acts carried on fully in like manner, other than false teachers and false doctrines? You can't, because this is not the relevance and absolute of the true Gospel and purpose of the Holy Spirit. I grew up, visited and met so many people in churches from all over. I was abused, mocked for my faith in various ways, a victim of two ancient cults tied to the same enemy, even for being open about wanting to share God with others in high school. And yet, I have deep love for people. You are my brother in Christ, but one big reason why I left the church is because of everything that's wrong going on in many of them, and the lack of common sense and true accountability.

I believe that we should be careful to judge people who speak in tongues, I do not speak in tongues, perhaps I am still sceptic, because it is not done correct, if I read 1Kor 12-13, I am alway so disappointed that people keep on doing it, regarless what the scripture tells us. I had the experience when I asked God ti give me HIS spirit, Jesus no other tongue than yours, I want You, desperately, I felt something like electricity going through my whole body, I felt so much peace and comfort, but still no tongue. I am still waiting on Him, but I need this presence more than this gift, only Jesus, if He gives me a tongue, I will be so blessed, but I love him anyway.❤

Jesus said because lawlessness shall abound the love of many shall wax cold. I mean just a thought the love chapter in 1 cor is smack bang in the middle of the 2 chapters on gifts of the spirit. If we lose love the flame of the spirit will go out in us, on the day of pentecost they were described as having flames of fire on their heads which would resemble a candle burning. We should not seek to put the flame out but rather seek God to ignite it

Fourteen years ago when I was new to Christianity, I was nearly put off completely by people speaking in tongues at a charismatic church. There was a kind of hierarchy whereby only the 'anointed' and those part of the inner circle would speak in tongues. No interpretation was ever offered. My observation from having since lived in Catholic Italy is that I have never once come across anyone speaking in tongues so I guess this spiritual gift is unique to the charismatic groups in contrast to all the other spiritual gifts.

You are saying that the point of the passage in bringing up tongues is : “tongues should be accompanied by interpretation, so that the ppl should understand it and it edifies the church.” Therefore , the natural conclusion , is that tongues cannot be an unintelligible language. I believe that his summary of the context is skewed. I believe the context is summarized in this : “ Even so you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, let it be for the edification of the church that you seek to excel” Paul just got done with chapter 13 about speaking about love being the greatest gift. His next point is that when seeking the gifts the motive should be one of love in building up the church. **Paul only brings up tongues as an illustration NOT “to make the declaration that tongues are only for the edification of the church and therefore must be intelligible ONLY, “but gifts used to edify the church and others , out of love, is BETTER then having gifts for any other reason This is shown in this statement “18 I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all; 19 yet in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I may teach others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue”

Building our selves up in the faith is not a bad thing but in the congregation that is not the time and place for it, like Jesus said to do our praying in secret and good deeds and not to blow the trumpet like the hypocrites do. Jude 20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. The word says to do this it our responsibility to do so we can't always rely on others, would not tongues be a gift meant to aid us in that? Some of the things of God are going to go over our heads just because we may not understand something from him does not mean he is not at work

@@lionoffireraw In 1 cor 14:19 yet in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I may teach others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue. I believe this shows there is a gift to pray in such a manner but like Paul is trying to say this is of no use to the body of Christ so it should not be done in the house. No one prays 10,000 words when they give a legit word from God, but you might do that in private. The way I read that is Paul is trying to say not to mix the two up.
@lionoffireraw
@lionoffireraw 4 месяца назад
There’s no mention of a private prayer language. The point that Paul is trying to make, if you look at the context, is that there’s no point in him speaking tongues in a particular setting, if there’s no interpreter. It would be better to speak five words instead. This is evident when he clearly says that people SHOULD speak in tongues publicly, if there’s an interpreter. This isn’t implying that there is a private prayer language, or a time when he prayed tongues in private. Rather, the contrast that he’s drawing is between speaking in tongues with without an interpreter, or with an interpreter (or when it’s in someone’s native language, so that they can understand it). There’s no mention of any private praying in tongues. This is being read into the text by people.
