How long will a 12V 100Ah lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery run a 12V RV fridge? Let's find out! I connected my 12V mini fridge to a 12V 100Ah lithium battery and started a timer. Then I recorded how long the fridge ran off the battery. I was surprised by the results!

I insulated the outside of my 12V fridge with 1" styrofoam insulation board, bottom and sides, excluding the top and small side vent area. Taped into place with foil duct tape. This resulted in fridge cycling on half as often, extending battery charge to nearly twice as long. Way cheaper than adding a second battery for extending cooling time. 500watts of solar panels feeding 100AH LiPo battery through 40Amp controller. Two years traveling, not one hiccup.

I keep mine in the back seat of the car for grocery trips. Works great at keeping frozen stuff frozen from the Grocery Store to Home. Especially Popsicles and Ice Cream for the kids. The only bad thing is having to do up the seat belt, or else my car alerts me that someone in the back seat is not buckled up.

I can run the fridge indefinately because I have solR but when we were converting a 10 x 6 trailor we did a 2 month trip with it before fitting the solar. thats when we ran the fridge for 7 days 24 /7 before paying for a camp ground to recharge our Bluetti and our other 200ah lithium we use 400watts on the roof in our shuttle and also in the trailor as well we use 200ah lifepo4 that keeps us going in the summer We spend at least 2 months travelling in the Winter hete in Canada and every year we get snowed in for sometimes days Over winter we run our deisel heater 24/7 using a 5 gallon boat fuel tank that will run the heater for at least 7 days. during these trips we take the Bluetti 2400 with its own 200ah lifepo4 battery. we als carry a 200 watt suitcase panel to augment the 400watts on the roof with those winter additions we can get socked in for a long time without much solar if need be Redundancy wins the day always when we are out wr do a shop and refuel once a week . More if we expect to be snowed in

So I’m thinking that if I was not running a lot more than this, 500 watts would be overkill right? I was thinking one 180 watt panel would be sufficient but please correct me if I’m wrong because I’m only in the initial phase on leaning/planning.

Here are some suggestions: a) 5 cubic foot 110v chest freezer connected via an inverter large enough to power the freezer b) 700 watt microwave (via a small enough inverter) c) 2 L capacity kettle (via a small enough inverter) d) diesel heater (one of those cheap Chinese ones) e) Starlink Internet dish and router

The microwave alone would drain the battery after 1.53 hours..i have 3 90h hour battery bank, he would need 2 100 ah hour batteries and a 3 kw inverter. This is a rough guess.i also use agm batteries, however if he were to add 500 watts in pv pqnela qns q second 100 ah battery, he could go for days onmsunny days.

Yeah, mine stays outside, but I've got 300 AH of 48v batteries and another 200 AH of 12v batteries along with a 2.6kw solar array on my RV roof. The portable fridge isn't even an afterthought, the rooftop A/C is about the only thing that really draws my system down at all in situations where I have to augment the mini split to get cooler faster or if it's north of 100-105 degrees outside.

I tested a Newair 48 qt. duo zone cooler recently using one of the new "mini" 100ah batteries. With both zones set to -4 degrees F and with the cooler filled with 31 lbs of 4" cubes of ice, to represent frozen food that would need protecting during a power outage, the battery ran the cooler for 2 1/2 days. I was impressed. Next I constructed a DC to DC converter that allowed me to drop 18 volt Ryobi tool batteries down to 14 volts and ran the same cooler under the same conditions. I'd like you to do the same with your cooler while set up as a refrigerator, rather than a deep freeze as I did. I thought it would be a handy thing if you wanted to take the cooler on a long grocery shopping trip, but wouldn't want to leave it connected to your car battery while it was parked. Just switch to the tool battery while you're inside the store. This stuff is fun, ain't it?

@footprinthero
@footprinthero Год назад
When my fridge was actively cooling its wattage would range from 35-50 watts (not sure why it never got up to 60 which is what the product manual says it uses up to when in MAX mode). I suspect it's due to the fridge being in different stages of the cooling cycle, but that's just a hunch!

Then we would have a better reading. Now I see these Power Queen Minis and I was wondering do they have the same Watts hour. Let's say if I had a light bulb with 100 w I should get 12 hour before it's empty right. 11-21-23
@my2centsworth
@my2centsworth 2 месяца назад
That is very normal for anyone with a lithium. Fridges cycle on and off to maintain temp. Once cold they are off more than on. That is why they rate fridges with a daily usage rating that is usually around 200-250 watts a day. They run longer on freezer setting usually due to the frozen food help maintain the temp.

Now add a small solar charging unit and see if you can sustain indefinitely.

Love that test. Real life situations. How about a AGM Battery test. I am not sure if I want the AGM or a Lithium??

Lithium is better, agm doesn’t like being discharged so much and will shorten the life span significantly.

agm you wont be able to drop the voltage that low without damaging the battery.

you will save tons of energy just in the weight difference...lithium will be about 1/3 the same size AGM that can only produce 1/2 the power so you would need twice the AGM battery which now brings the the lithium to 1/6th the weight of AGM, in a vehicle thats a big difference to MPG/energy.

You just put it 2kg block of frozen chicken 😁 if I do that in an esky that is not even a fridge with motor it will keep cool at 5 Celsius for next 24h before the chicken melts 😁

Try that with the fridge outdoors as it simulates an actual camping trip. Just a thought

Leaving a fridge in full sun is a bit silly. Why would anyone do that?
@jimrice4699
@jimrice4699 2 месяца назад
@@clockmendergb Because teh inside of a vehicle gets very hot. You cannot always camp in a location with continuous deep shade, and if you do so there is a trade - off vs. your solar input.
