(1054) Challenge: OzLockCon 2017 Lockwood Picked & Gutted

In this video I take on a hand-built challenge lock, a Lockwood, from OzLockCon 2017 and get it picked and gutted.
Whipped videos highlight custom made locks sent to the LockLab as a challenge. They contain innovative modifications, unique security designs, and careful craftsmanship. Challenge lock design is difficult, to say the least, but many LockSporters excel in lock design and hand craftsmanship. Because there is such innovation among LockSporters, many manufacturers pay attention to the WHIPPED videos and incorporate the security techniques into their own locks.
There is only ONE RULE: The key must work. You are free to cover up the key to prevent me from seeing it until after I successfully pick (or fail to pick) the lock. I will make THREE 10-minute attempts (down from six 10-minute attempts in April 2018). If I fail to open it in that time, it will become a WHIPPED video. If you are interested in sending a challenge lock, please use this address:

Bill, this was truly a great Pick and video. The smoothness of the Key in the core showed us the pins operated the shear line so smoothly proving "Klepas" knows how to make a proper Challenge Lock . Then all that talking about the warding and your pick going into the sewer with that strange key profile. I think this is probably my most favorite from all of your videos to date.

Great work bill. Gday from Melbourne from a fellow lockie!! The machine gun sound was there to represent the "spray and pray" method of shooting... I.E When Bill was raking the shit out of the lock. 'Rake & Pray". instead of picking a pin at a time. Side note...The AE profile was used by Lockwood Australia as a semi restricted profile many many years ago.Lucky to find a barrel in good condition now days. i wonder why they didnt send one of our more captive restricted profiles used today.
@Makrond
@Makrond 7 лет назад
The simple answer is because Gen6, IP1, GP3 etc. are expensive and most locksmiths won't just sell you a core, and to sell you a lock requires quite a bit of admin work which isn't really worth it for a single lock. The older MLAA and Lockwood profiles are still floating around in decent enough quantities and cutting a key for them isn't a criminal act anymore, and as locksmiths embrace locksport a bit more than they used to a lot of old stock that's been sitting in someone's van for 30 years is getting a new chance to shine.
@klepas
@klepas 7 лет назад
Basically something like this ^ is why we used an AE core (and we had a bunch of ’em spare…).
@RcDumbThumbs
@RcDumbThumbs 7 лет назад
I dont agree Makrond. How much troulble do you think they went to by loading the cyl with different springs, multiple manufacturers top pins, cutting a key with horrible cuts for picking & threading the 4th & 5th chamber? i really dont think paperwork or cost was the point of a challenge lock. You dont think any of the MLAA J series or LW Status 6 cyls would be more of a challenge profile wise?
@RcDumbThumbs

Lol Simon. fair call.

i have an idea for an unpick-able trap pin that's a 2 piece pin that would then fall into a fixed cavity to shallow for the pin (with a magnetic component that once you trip the trap the lock is imobile. so the pine has 3 elements a 2 piece lower pin that could be false set incorrectly and allow further rotation UNTIL it hits the trap location. the only way to correctly set this pin would be to over set the upper portion of the lower key pin from the core

@chrisaviolist
@chrisaviolist 3 года назад
If you're talking about the standard-bitting locks (such as the Abus 83 Series door-key lock or the Brinks House Key padlock) you usually can't set the top pins unless you dismantle the lock completely, like Bill. Lock Noob (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AV8qKnEcF5s.html) and Lockpicking Lawyer (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gt9kJYSsQEE.html) reviewed and picked the Brinks padlock (with some ease). The Brinks usually has standard pins. The Abus 83 "SFIC" is a well known and moderately appreciated lock across the three channels. If you have an Abus 83, I'd say you have a pretty robust lock, and I'd trust it better than a 4-pin, no-security-pin Master Lock Magnum. The Abus seems to be popular for for challenge locks since you can re-pin the key pins as long as you have extra key pins and the driver pins as long as you've got extra driver pins and a follower/tweezers. You might also have the Kwikset Smartkey padlock. To answer your question, I wouldn't recommend it for security--and I think Bill wouldn't either. Lockpicking Lawyer says they improved it build-wise, but it's still somewhat weak in single-"pin"-picking and could be raked open easily if there's a lack of variety on the key cuts.
@chrisaviolist
@chrisaviolist 3 года назад
As usual, if you can search for the lock you have on RU-vid and it's reviewed by Bosnianbill, Lockpicking Lawyer, and/or Lock Noob (at least search by manufacturer and material), that's a great step in determining what level of security your lock will provide.

@theoneandonlyghandi
@theoneandonlyghandi 7 лет назад
The cam in mine has been damaged by force, I can only imagine that somebody tried to pull the padlock open by force and disassembling it shows an indent in the cam which traps the ball bearing on one side. This also makes it hard to lock without turning the cam to its fully unlocked position, once it gets past that it functions fine. Do you have a key? If so does it make any difference to do what I described and turn to the unlock position whist pushing down the shackle? Also, if it is set to key retaining, the 'z' bar might not be seated properly which prevents the cam from returning to fully locked. Unless you are comfortable with disassembling and reassembling the lock yourself, I agree with Krust Bag and the best thing is to let the locksmith who made it for you take a look. If you are comfortable though, pull it apart and see if you have the same trouble with the core removed.
