In video 1652 I'll show off a buffet of locks that Den Brass send from Canada. There's some true weirdness here - SO weird that I felt the only lock I had a CHANCE of opening was his final challenge lock...dang.

I understand that many challenge locks weren't much of a challenge and those that were had some stupid trick that made them more of a puzzle than a challenge. That said, I do miss the occasional challenge lock because (like here) seeing the craftmanship of the challenge pins is a work of art and should be appreciated. There were some designs here that I can't wait to fail replicating.

My parents had a Bricard cross lock. Looked a lot like that, but on yours, one side is close to being all flat. I remember it had 3 sides with serious beating, a quite long key, that's tons of pins to pick. That strange vak key, I have something similar from Fichet (or not, you never know unless you tke them appart), not sure how it works and have to push super hard on it (but not too hard or it's stuck) and to make it more annoying to pick, there are some kind of shutters with strong springs that close the keyway and once the key is pushed in, they fall into a gap in the key behind, if those need to be in place to allow rotation, it leaves no space for picking. After watching many of your videos, I found out french tend to use some awesome locks for their homes. Easier to kick the door open on many occasions.

That is magnificent work. Both Locksmith Den Brass and Bosnian Bill. If there were some kind of quality control, arbitrage or something like that to ensure challengelocks aren't jokes or junk, would you consider doing some once more? Something like the French Kings who had people pre tasting their food to ensure it wasn't poisoned. I love seeing such works of art and the subsequential art of picking it.

hey check out the Areox fingerprint U lock. It has a smiley key way however it's supposed to be a fingerprint lock. I found an old original one and it seems fairly well built. The only down side is that the manual is in Chinese. I think it would be worth it if you wanted to check it out. I might be able to send you the old one as well so you can look at how it has changed.as long as you send it to The Lock Picking Lawyer to test out after. It seems like a surprisingly decent lock and I couldn't find any serious vulnerabilities on the original lock. The smiley key is not hard to pick but that is not really much of a real world threat.

Even when you wouldn't have to address those so-called 'passive pins' when you pick the lock, de cause they supposedly only are there to make it harder to copy the key, I wonder: do such passive pins block the lock when someone tries to open it with a key that does not have the necessary, corresponding holes/dimples in it?

Bring back challenge locks, BB! Set rules: no trap pins, no super springs, no impossible bitting, etc. Provide no guarantee you'll pick. Provide no material reward for whipped attempts, etc. You seem to be scrounging for material, at times.

Sorry, not going to happen. Here is what I posted on FB, Twitter & YT to explain why: ---------------------------------------- The "Challenge Lock" series has come to an end. Not only am I out of the "Whipped" PacLocks, but there were many other things that I took into consideration. 1. Cost. Every day I was receiving between 5-10 locks from around theworld. I had to return most of them to the owner, which was a SIGNIFICANT expense - always more than $500/month but sometimes approaching $1000. What little I receive in viewer support was quickly consumed in return postage. I was spending several hundred dollars of my own money every month just to return locks. 2. Quality. Some locks were well designed and contained some uniqueinnovations, but they were few and far between. Most "challenge locks" were threaded chambers with serrated pins built on old, beaten up Kwikset cores. The number of trap pins and super springs has continued to increase as copycats realized this might be a way to get a "Whipped" PacLock - meaning I was breaking and bending more expensive picks. I found this very discouraging. 3. Time. Unpacking, picking, disassembling, repacking, answering emails, etc. Each challenge lock took a lot of time to figure out and then return - even if I did not make a video of it. I was spending most of my time setting up and videoing locks that turned out to be copycats of other people's ideas - meaning I could not post the video for fear of viewers saying "WHAT? Another Kwikset with threaded chambers?" 4. Viewer Interest. My goal with LockLab was to remain "New PickerFriendly" and attract new members to LockSport, but LockLab was quickly becoming the "Challenge Lock Channel", interesting to only a limited number of people with advanced skills. Every time I posted a challenge lock video people complained and unsubscribed to the channel. New pickers were overwhelmed by the complexity of challenge locks and became discouraged. My analytics were very clear on this: If I want to lose subscribers all I needed to do was post a challenge lock video. 5. Channel growth. The LockLab's growth was stagnating and I needed tochange something before it was too late. Since I stopped doing challenge locks the number of subscribers has increased, the number of comments increased, "likes" went up, and the channel has grown. So, yes. I stopped making challenge lock videos. It was not an easy decision but I could not afford to continue doing it for all of these reasons. The money saved from NOT returning challenge locks I am now spending on locks - and have been doing so for the past month or two. I cannot tell you how refreshing it is to return to picking real-world locks in a wide variety. It is good for me (mentally), as well as good for LockLab. bill

I do miss the challenge locks, but there were to many fudges on the rules, and there were some boring ones that were bringing his viewer totals down, so I can see why he had to discontinue them. From the locksport perspective, they are fun; but from a financial perspective, they were more of a drain.
