What's the difference between the new Harley-Davidson Milwaukee-Eight engines? We compare the 107 and the 114 to find out. The results are interesting...What is your opinion? Comment below.
Just back from the dealer. Rode the Fat Bob 107 and 114. The 107 was just like this video said: quicker reaction from the motor. Not better feel, just quicker reaction. Twist throttle, engine tries to give you what you ask for. If the “quality of the torque” doesn’t matter, the 107 will do the job just fine. No complaints. It felt decent. I didn’t feel like anything was missing. However, riding the 114? The quality of the engine feel was better. The 114 seems to have a bit more depth in the motor. Turn that throttle and you feel the smoothness in that depth. The 107 feels like the motor is being told what to do, and it complies because it has to. The 114 made me feel as one with the motor. I would think, I would like some more power, and the bike had a direct link to my entire being and we responded in unison. If I didn’t know about the 114, the 107 would have been wonderful. But unfortunately (or fortunately) I rode that 114. And now, that’s all I want. That’s how it felt for me anyway. YMMV.
@@brentharrington9235 Smooth out? It was plenty smooth. Have you had a chance to compare the two motors on the Fat Bob? If I could find another analogy, it would be like driving a Honda Accord with the 4 cylinder engine. Smooth, stable, perfect…yet….if you want to accelerate with two adults in the car, it feels a little heavy…like the engine wants to please you, but just not enough displacement to make the power. Drop into a V8 with 4 people and do the same thing and feel the power just move through you and the vehicle. Effortlessly. Acceleration? Tons of it. And room to spare. So it’s not about smoothness…it’s about available power on demand I guess. Just a different world.
@@dylanmonaghan when I say smooth out, I am using tuning jargon. I was referring to smoothing out the torque curve. The explanation provided by yourself and author of the video indicates to me that the power delivery is very immediate with the 107. All I am saying is this can easily be adjusted on a dyno to suit the preference of the rider.
Great job describing the 2 engines... I found it to be the same. Smooth and power early on the 114 and snappier and higher reving for the 107 and both r awesome!!! I went with the 107 fat bob!!! Sweet bike!!!
Can't say I've ridden the 114 but, honestly, I've never gotten on my 107 and thought "You know what this needs? More torque and power!" I find the Street Bob just always has enough power to bring a smile to my face. My only other gripe with the 114 is I find the colour schemes on the Street Bob look a bit too "much", I like simple and clean aesthetics' on my bikes. Personally, I think it's a case of buy the one you can afford and the one that looks the best to your eyes. You won't be disappointed with either of them.
In the last few years I have had the 88 in a DWG, the 103 in both a SG and a DWG. I now have a 2019 RG with the 114 and a stage 2 with a cam. I can say that I love each motor. The quickest was the 103 in my 2013 DWG. Loved the sound of my 88 in the 2001 DWG with short shot pipes. The 114 pulls in every gear and is actually fun up above 70 to 80 mph. To each his own. I have enjoyed every bike I have ever owned, and that is a lot of bikes in 50 years of riding.
When picking my Heritage, the 114 sounded more attractive because of the bigger size, but really it's only like a ~100cc difference. (1753cc to 1868cc). For that slight difference, I opted for the bike I liked the LOOK of more, so I ended up with a chromed out 107 Heritage. Good video though, good to have a rider's side-by-side take on the two. Always love your videos, take care!
I have the 107 on my heritage, and I am quite happy with it. In the 7000 miles that I've ridden it I have never said I wish I had more power. For me, the 114 would just be an extra expense both up front and possibly in gas mileage although it might pay for itself in resale value. I bought the 107 because when I purchased it that was what they had in stock, and I liked the chrome better than black. Now for 2022 the heritage only comes with the 114 motor and the laced Wheels which I have are a $400 option. Plus there is a $600 surcharge this year so to buy a heritage like mine would cost about $2,900 more yes the shipping also went up about $125.
After test riding both, I could not see any difference great enough to choose one over the other. just pick the bike you like and whatever engine it has would be will be fine.
Have a Fat Bob 114. Passing semis in 6th at 80mph is always smile inducing. The M8 114 is a stellar engine. Tried a Road Glide Special with the 107 and also a lovely motor. Can't go wrong with either.
As a Motor head, builder, performance oriented person my preference is the shorter 4.375 stroke of the 107 to the 4.500 stroke of the 114. It is however still under square even with the S&S 4.250 big bore jugs. Rod to stroke ratio is good approximately 1.8 in either 107 or 114. Better than the twin cams. Many of the old larger twin cams had a really long 4.625 stroke. Big fan of the M8 in general. Overall best HD engine to date IMO.
I rode both those 2 exact same bikes in 2021, 107 SB and the 114 Classic. To me, Dollar for dollar the Classic was a better buy and felt more stable on the freeways. I now own the 114 Heritage Classic and love it. I don't miss my 103 Dyna one bit ;)
I think both motors are beast. With 4 valves per cylinder the upgrades are endless. The 114 seems to be more refined like a big block V8. The 107 is like a small block V8 that revs quicker. Both have their place. Me I like the snappy feel of the 107 with a stage 2. However for long heavy haul through the hills and MT. the 114 does the trick.
Got a 107 road king special. You do gotta watch that throttle over bumps...it feels like its trying to get out from under you sometimes. Also a seat with a high back is required or else i think it would be going down the road without me one of these days
Yes I think it’s down to the ‘fly by wire’ throttle. That twist from off to on is a bit jerky; even on the 114. You don’t get the progressive feel like with a traditional cable throttle
I would think a 107 is more than enough engine for a big bike... They're gonna be pretty heavy as it is... In my opinion, a 114 (or even a crate 131) would be a good pick for a well-dressed, hefty drive equipped trike, with lots of on-board functions and storage, as well as good bike trailer pulling power...
Weight wise from what I read there is only a negligible increase in weight going to the 114. I ride a 96ci bagger and that has plenty of power up to about 110mph. I am upgrading from a carb'd sporty to the 114 street bob next month which is honestly a stupid amount of power on a bike that's in the 650 lb range. It sure will be fun to ride though.
I just bought a 107 Heritage this past weekend. It’s an awesome bike! I test drove both the 107 & the 114 for about an hour back to back over and over. I literally could not tell that much of a difference. The 107 even felt like it pulled a little harder. In 6th gear I could tell that the 114 felt just a tad bit more powerful.
I run the 114 breakout with stage 3 and it yanks your ass hard with more to spare/ insurance cost to own this over the 107 is quite dramatic and yes smooth power delivery in all gears at all rpm range.Great motor! I have heard when engineers did the testing it went 300,000 miles totally unharmed. So as time and miles go by I think we may be noticing how bullet proof it is as well
Badass! I have a stock 114 Fatbob that I am gonna do Stage 1&2. I thought about the stage 3 but honestly for the cost I dont see any reason to, especially since I still own a CBR 600 rocket. Hell that 114 pulls hard in its stock configuration! Only doing the Stage 2 because I can, really no need to though for what the bike is. I also love the way it handles, best handling cruiser I have ever been on.
For my old 96” Ultra Classic, the only downside was on the motorway for that overtake in the fast lane, just no quick acceleration. I prefer the roads shown in the video for a leisurely pace to where I am going, whether the U.K. or E.U. Now another bike is needed later this year and the debate of whether another twin cam 103” or an M8 107” Ultra Limited to buy has got me thinking. I doubt I would not get anymore satisfaction out of a 114” or 120” engine mostly due to riding more on my own or within our mixed bike club.
I have a 2020 StreetBob which comes with the 107..and you're absolutely right! Hit a bump or even twist the throttle just a little bit unexpectedly..and It will throw you out the back of your seat! VERY SNAPPY and JERKY. It wants to GO!!!
I think Harley screwed the pooch not making the street bob frame compatible with the 114 plant. I'm sure the 107 is great but all the extra power of the 114 in the sleeker frame would be a hit with the kids
Thank you for this video, I felt the difference you described between the 107 and 114, the 114 is smoother as you mentioned. Both were great, but the 114 is the way to go.
ya i am just waiting on a good deal then i will pull the trigger, i am just trying to figure out which color i want. i love the denim red. so if i can get a leftover at a great price i will do it
Have you tried the 107 or the 114? I had a 103 Ultra Limited that I removed the headers with the catalytic converter, installed ceramic coated stainless steel headers, Arlen Ness stage 1 air filter, Power Commander, and had it dyno tuned all because I hated the heat. I then rented a stock 107 Road Glide in Hawaii and immediately noticed how even in the stop and go traffic of Honolulu how much cooler it felt than my modified 103. I didn't like the heat of the 103 and traded in my 2014 Ultra Limited for a 2017 Road Glide Ultra for this reason alone.
Good video I am still trying to determine which would be the best. I am probably gonna go with the 114. 107 does seem snappier not sure about smoother though. Both great Motors
I think now, with time riding, that if you want to ride hard and be a biit of a hooligan; go for the 107. If you want to be more laid back, get the 114
MrDarcy & the Ol'Man I noticed the instant power on the deluxe and the road king special. I like a little bit of both but I am more of a long distant rider I could go 2 300 miles. Have ridden 750 in one day on my road king. So I am looking more at the touring aspect of it and a bit of the thrill to.
both stock 114 is 10% stronger around .... it have more bore more troke biger dispalcement biger torque biger power and weight the same or pretty d.mn close the same so107 cant be snappier .
Hi the last year I bought fat Bob 114 ,the last week I changed for a fat boy 107 I didn't feel too much difference maybe the 114 a little bit more torque but the 107 is faster is longer in every gear!!
Beautiful bikes, yet I'll respectfully stick to my 06 vrscd. That Revolution engine is something to write home about in terms of power and reliability.
My 114 RG with a stg1 falls on its face from a dig, the problem is the torque curve is awful. Doing s&s 465 cam. Obviously gain some power but it will bring the tq in at 2-2500 rpm rather then 3500+. My 103 pulled much harder from a dig.
I am planing to buy 107 road king and wanted to make custom color all of the body so dont need roadking special but only what i am really want is i want 117 not 114.. i know i can do 107 to 114 biut do you think i can do 107 to 117 one step as same or little more price? And i want use bassani full exhaust is it possible or i should use streaming eagle?
I’d have thought you’d be better off buying a 114 and then converting that to a 117 but I’m not all that sure. You are best off asking your local Harley dealership
Denny I’m 6 ft 3 inches, a tad shorter than you. I would definitely get forward controls and apes with less sweepback. It’s actually an incredible bike and such good value for money
I think you’ve hit the nail on the head with this @MrDarcy. I have the 107 and thought it was just me but yes! It can throw you off, an accidental twitch or slight roll on of the throttle and it snaps. Definitely something you get used to however and learn to anticipate to avoid!! Nice videos 👍✅
I traded in my Fat Bob 103 twin cam(stage one) for a Street Glide Special 114 and boy what a difference that made, what a awesome engine it is,but heres the rub should I get a stage one job done, what exhausts to use,is it worth the money?
Awesome. You only need the pipes for the 114 as the filter already breathes properly, and probably an ECU tuner. So many pipes to choose from! Personally V&H Big Shots or if just slipons, V&H Slash Cut
I have a street bob 114 with intake, 2into1 exhaust (must for performance), and Star Racing 30/30 cam. It’s unreal compared to stock. Do the cam too….you’ll love it. And don’t do short shots people. Please?
Part of the attraction of Harleys for me is they’re all around the same power and characteristics , so you don’t feel you need to change it every year, so although l wouldn’t moan if my 103 was a 120 or whatever the cvo lumps are, it’s plenty big enough for me! Interesting that the engines are different enough in their delivery at a small change in capacity. Enjoyed the video- seems like a lot of commentators were having a grumpy day though!😂
I really believe that you would find that same instant jerkyness you have reported in the 107 at a slightly higher rpm in the 114. I do not know but will look it up: what is the ratio difference in gear? I'm a chromaholic I might add.
@@MrDarcy-OlMan no need to reply and I am wrong more than right but I've decided to go with the 107. I feel its the better motor. Great video as always. Thank you.
F u if you are bagging on kick start. In the 60s we thought HD electric start was bogus. Real bikers used to be able to kickstart a 650 twin. I believe I still can.
Good video - I’ve wondered too, what could be the difference(s) between with just a few ci’s? Nice job with this video - thanks. Unfortunately, there is a BIGGER question now facing Harley-Davidson.... Sales world-wide are shrinking - people 18 - 40 aren’t drawn to the heavy iron, big growl, and tough-guy image that HD.successfully marketed for many years. I don’t think very many people will dispute the almost cult-like following that HD has enjoyed since it’s rebirth from near-bankruptcy about 25 years ago.... but those days are rapidly disappearing. Just ask anyone (particularly millennials) what they expect to see whenever a Harley-Davidson motorcycle rumbles by.... 3 words come to mind: “old”, “gray”, “fat” - this is now the image of the Harley rider. It won’t matter if HD keeps making bigger & bigger versions of its iconic V-Twin.... today’s young riders want modern styling, nimble and F-A-S-T motorcycles. HD’s loyal followers are declining in numbers year by year. If HD keeps pinning their hopes on larger & larger V-Twin designs they will soon have no customers left. Today’s young people don’t want to buy a grandpa bike.
M Smith Very good points. I know Harley-Davidson are planning to launch a range of bikes in the coming years, some of which are going to be aimed at the younger rider. What I don’t know is what these bikes will be like and whether they get it right. Good point about old grey and fat - I’m only two of those!
Sales have declined for all brands not just Harley. The new generation kids today are not buying bikes. They are not even buying cars. Even car manufacturers are trying to appeal to them. Most of them are lazy, dont want to work, and just want everything given to them.
David Bartlett Thanks! It does a great job actually but expensive to replace, which is crazy because originally it was a cheap roof covering. How times change
MrDarcy & the Ol'Man! Your videos are so inspiring! I’m English and live in Dubai! I was looking for HDs and your heritage video was fantastic! So I bought one! It has V&H big shots and there too much! Nearly bought the eliminator 300 pipes from watching your vids but picked up some Rinehart slip-ons and back to stock headers! Look forward to hearing them! Cheers for now! 👍🏻
Would love to get a new Ultra. 107 would be fine. But for now I'll stick with my 28 year old Electra Glide Sport. Runs great, rides great. So reliable. Love to have a new one in addition to mine, but they aren't cheap. Beautiful though.
Hi, I want to buy the first HD, I watched street bob 117. Should I add some money and buy a different model, is it worth taking street bob? I have no idea ... best regards Mike
Hi Mr Darcy. first of all thx for your video, I watch them with thx. secondly like to ask your advice. I'm facing to choose FB M8 but in doubt which one , with 107 or 114. mainly planning city using (due to COVID) but occasionally going to hit a high way. thx in advance for your advise
Your right about the 107 that's what I have but I like it once you get used to it you Learn to back off of it befor it can snap back on you but it can still happen
That bike wasn't stage 1. Stage 1 is exhaust, intake and tune. The bike in this video had standard intake fitted. For future reference Stage 2 is all Stage 1 plus upgraded camshaft.
hamdog that "ugly denim crap" has a hell of a following and imho the best looking paint ever laid on a Harley! Opinions are like buttholes', most people have em, they just don't all talk out of em. Lol. I can't imagine a red blooded human being who likes anything Harley Davidson, looking at a brand new Harley street glide in solid black denim ; and not just being left breathless!! Denim black and the new industrial grey, with a touch of flat orange writing on the tank is pure art in my book.
Nice looking bike, but you can buy better quality bikes for half the money,ie Triumph,it's a shame Triumph stopped making the Thunderbird storm anymore, was voted best cruiser in the states,2 years on the trot,1700 cc great bike, but you can get great deals on second hand ones for under 10 grand,a no brainer really
Erjon Gokche Pretty much sound the same but almost imperceptibly the 114 would be a tone deeper. Same volume. I doubt there’s anything in the heat between them tbh
Test rode both, preferred the 114 . Way more torque. To Mr Jimmy below I've been riding 50 years and the 1969 750 cc trident made 58 horsepower and was slower than the stem of dog shit. My 114 dynoed at 120 hp and 130 torque with a $300 dollar cam change and a set of slip ones. Get your facts straight.
Listen jerk I was talking about a bike from 49 years ago A new eight valve Harley. according to Cycle World turns the quarter in 13.77 at 95 49 years ago my little 750 trident at a NHRA track I turned 13.22 at 105 mph I beat six fucking shit box Harleys last summer with my FJR touring bike so bad they thought their belts had broke. I have been riding 54 years and no piece of shit Harley has ever beaten me! I have a road test on line of a Harley fat boy next to a FJR. The fucking Harley with a 1690 cc motor makes 56hp and 72.2 lbs of torque . On the other half of the page a Yamaha FJR with 1290 cc makes 145hp with 92.0 lbs of torque. Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining
MrJimmy1437 I have seen you commenting on multiple videos bashing other people’s personal preferences. If they want to pay the “Harley-Davison Tax” let them. I love my Kawi and I love my Harley but one thing I can’t stand are the retards that try and belittle everybody else that likes something different than they do. Go out, enjoy what you like and keep it shiny side up.
I can't stand people who use a motorcycle or a car to show off with.Being ostentatious is wrong. I started riding in 1964 and until the late 70's motorcycle was a lot of fun, but I think about that time we were hit by a stupidity bomb, because all those wonderful do everything well standard bikes, started gathering cobwebs in the show rooms and the public suddenly started wanting horrible , posing cruiser junk and it has gotten worse with each passing day. In the old days us bikers traveled many miles to see the great motorcycle races. Now some of the good tracks are gone or even those that are open like Daytona , these showboating fucking fools don't go to the track. They stand around , drink beer and look at a bunch of half naked Bimbos. I know people who go hundreds of miles every march to Daytona. When they come back I excitingly ask them who won the big race. I get fucking dumb answers like "Oh I didn't go to the races What did you do? I watched people parade up and down with their fucking junk Harleys making a lot of noise, each one trying to look more ridiculous than the other!
The real ?? Is it tougher as 96 can you realy do the pedal to the metal as i did whit my 96 like lock the trotteul for hr in az or ne whitout release it i dont think so guy
I ride my 1200 Sportster with stock exhaust and I enjoy the relaxing ride. Never understand why most Harley riders want to make so much noise, they sound horrible.
That’s the versatility of Harley Davidsons. So customisable to everyones taste. I personally prefer a louder pipe. It’s part of the experience and spectacle. It’s a bit of entertainment for others too. And loud pipes save lives - nobody will not hear you coming and walk out in front of you
MrDarcy & the Ol'Man - rode a 107 softail standard. Didn’t like it. Rode the 114 fatbob a couple days later. Loved it and rode it home. Is that the difference between the engine or the chassis or a combination of the two?
I would rather spend a bit more and get the 114. In the long haul, it will be the most proficient, and they will retain value a bit better. But, that said, love them both 107, or 114...it's a HARLEY-DAVIDSON...that is what counts the most. 🇺🇸 Cheers from SC
My stock 110cvo walks away from a stock 117cvo. My friend was furious when he lost by about a half bike length for each gear. Both street glides and similar weight riders. Bone stock, even exhaust. Harley’s claims of the M8 are bullshit
Steve Gutierrez sorry but my friend is on a CVO 117 and I’m the shitty rider so... your 107 will not run with my 110. Your bike has more emissions control shit than mine. Bottom line is the M8 isn’t what Harley claims.
After being on a 107 its just not enough and if you think its enough then your limp wristed and lame the 114 is a wondeful motor and truly reveals what a harley should be
You really sound dumb! Read stats....the Snappy 107 will throw you off the back of your seat..the 114 is more forgiving..just shows more pull in 5th or 6th gear.
I dont know what you are talking about? I told u I bought a bike every other year sometimes every year because I got 20% off and the private party values were pretty good. So I was able to ride for free. It has nothing to do with quality or tolerances for me. It was a matter of economics. Not anything else. If I worked at Yamaha I would do the same. This no longer holds true for HD. There is a flooded used bike market right now. Ten years 15 years ago you had to get on a list to buy a new bike and were paying over msrp. Now they are used boat anchors. If I worked at Honda I would do the same. I'm not a hater. Just speaking about facts. If I had no 20% discount I would be buying a Triumph, BMW or an Indian. Brand loyalty means nothing to me and that includes cars also. If you love HD good for you, and I wish you the best. If you ride any brand and you believe it's worth your money, more power to you. People forget how many foreign auto plants are in the U.S that employs hundreds of thousands of well paid employees. HD has plants in Brazil, India, Thailand thanks to their tariffs on imported bikes. Then people get pissed at Trump for trying to level the playing field. Idk if tariffs are a good idea for anyone, but this is the world we live in.
Maxx Benzz Yes the tariffs are atrocious! Regarding brand loyalty; cars though, not bikes, i was quite a loyal Land Rover buyer over the years, but now, with what they are making I’m done with them
@@MrDarcy-OlMan yeah Rovers have become Kardashian jewelry. Used to be THE vehicle to have if u wanted to do serious off roading. Now they are over priced grocery haulers. They look cool though!!! Lol
Best response ever! its funny how people marry brands, and they never try nothing new or different. they say they only buy American bikes , but at home their car is a Lexus lol
The 114 and 107 have same stroke, then 114 has larger bore, and that is the reason the screaming eagle kit changes the cylinders and pistons to upgrade the 107 to 114
Luis C Stroke on 107 is 111.1 and on the 114 is 114 so not much in it really. I’m wondering whether other factors make the engines feel slightly different but probably a combination of different things
Why not buy a Kawasaki and have some real power. I have seen the quarter mile time on the new eight valve 1800cc harley and its almost as fast as my 1969 750 cc trident was 49 years ago!
MrJimmy....Because the faster I go the quicker I get to my destination. Then my ride is over, and so is my fun. Thanks but no thanks, I would rather take my time and enjoy the ride.
Fuck lifestyle and looks! Harley riders are a bunch of losers, who are trying to buy a vehicle , to make up for what they lack as human beings. I was taught as a child that it was wrong to be ostentatious , a show off, Harley assholes seem to think it's a virtue
It is to slower! Cycle World just did a test on the new eight valve Harley. It turned the quarter in 13.77 at 95 mph 49 Years ago with a 750cc trident I turned 13.22 at 105 mph. Harley sure has come a long way in half of a century!
