As soon as old mate said flow chart I zoned out. It’s a game that’s made on judgement calls that come from common sense on the part of the players, and especially the umpires. You gain greater levels of common sense from strong respected leadership giving clear instructions.

The punditry discussion of this issue annoys me. They (Robbo in this instance) make it more confusing that it needs to be. The examples are clear. They should also start the discussion with an explanation of what the rules actually are, rather than talking in circles and rambling on like Robbo's doing. Rules 18.6.4 states when there is no prior, a free will be awarded if the player is able to, but does not, make a _genuine attempt_ to correctly dispose the ball within a reasonable time when tackled. In these situations, Rule 18.6.3(a). states it won't be considered incorrect disposal if you genuinely attempted to correctly dispose the ball. 18.6.3(b) states it's play on if the tackle causes the ball to be dislodged from the player’s possession. It's not as complicated as they make out

Wonder how many games of football Steven McBurney has played? That is exactly the problem with the game, umpires that have no idea about the game and how it's played. Instead they learn how to umpire by reading the rule book and whatever the flavour of the week is.

This is going to slow down the game so much and add a million more ball ups and stoppages.

Prior opportunity or not, illegal disposal should be illegal disposal.

In every case we needed to know whether prior opportunity was assumed. That makes all the difference, but remains confusing. By the way, when prior opportunity was first introduced (1980s?) it was four steps, now it looks like being just taking clean possession. It gets shorter and shorter.

Listening to a few coaches I really only have confidence in Beveridge and Brad Scott sense of what is best. Beveridge mentioned his concern flimsy tackles being rewarded and Brad Scott understand there a time when neither guy with ball or tackler is making progress so umpire needs to blow whistle earlier as a ball up. My biggest frustration around this whole discussion in media is the bias towards somebody being rewarded for tackling and no emphasis on the tackle being correct. I want to see the whistle blown quicker for illegal tackles and teach players to tackle correctly which has gone downward spirals for well over a decade. Too many attempts at tackles that over the shoulder and below knees are just allowed to happen and so players and many fans have been conditioned to think it ok. The whistle needs to be blown quicker when play is congested and it clear neither team is going to win a clear ball easily. It also needs to blown quicker to penalise an illegal tackle or a legal tackle when somebody holding the ball. Overall they just need to be more decisive and allow the flow of play to happen rather than allow congestion become the norm for too many chunks of matches.

His first comment about tackles lingering and being the cause of injury speaks volumes, this isnt about bad umpiring at all. This is yet another part of the AFL covering its arse when it comes to lawsuits. The umpires will be dragged into it to if they are adjudicating the game, basically umps will blow whistle super quick to avoid the sling tackle into a concussion. Umpires trying to reduce their liabilty to injured players and future lawsuits. Either way hopefully things improve anything is better than what we have currently.

As an ex player and now a avid follower of the game for the last 56 years IMHO If a player takes possession of the ball and is caught, regardless of prior opportunity or not, and allowed reasonable time for disposal of the ball legally, it should be (Holding the ball). Too many times players strategically takes a tackle so a ball up can happen thus slowing the game down. The amount of ball ups in a game is hindering the speed of the whole game. If the ball is knocked out by the action of the tackle it should be (incorrect disposal) again regardless of prior opportunity or not. Overall, if a player takes possession of the ball the player must dispose it legally or a penalty is given to the opposing team. That would take out grey decisions for the umpires. A good tackle must be rewarded in a fast competitive game such as ours. If a tackle is made ball and all, that's a good tackle. Players would quickly learn to keep the ball in play by tapping it on, stay on their feet, feed the ball out of congestions etc., not holding it in for a ball up advantage.

There should be no prior opportunity rule if the ball is not disposed of correctly. Even if it’s just dislodged in the tackle. It’s got to be holding the ball

AFL is the only game where the first 6 weeks is umpired different to the next 6 weeks and son and then the finals is a free for all. Mac Andrew on Curnow should never have happened, Curnow was blatantly pushed in the back when attempting to mark. This was a text book push in the back, why was it ignored? This was not a nudge or bump it was a blatant push with 2 hands directly in the back, it can not be "interpretated" any other way. Very good editing to avoid the "push in the back" non decision

This is not going to change anything that the fans or players want. We all want prior gone same with interpretation Reasonable Time is just another buzz word for umps to use. If a player has reasonable time 3-4 seconds prior or not it should be HTB same with 360 tackles we have consistently seen games with 100 plus tackles and less then 10 HTBs.

"Nothing untoward in the tackle"........that's garbage the tackle was brutal he wrapped his leg across ( locking the leg) whilst lowering his body and twisting the player in the opposite direction. The technique used was a wrestling move badly done! I bet the tackler has some wrestling or marshal arts training.

As much as the frustration is to umpires is warranted, structurally, it’s the AFLs fault. Past and present players are confused. Media pundits fans and even the umpires are unclear. The AFL needs to own up and admit fault, then be proactive about fixing this instead of using the umpires as cannon fodder. We need to strip things back to basics, stop all these knee jerk adjustments look at building up the rules from the ground up. Unfortunately all this mess has come about from adjustments made for players safety and trying to make the game more “marketable”.

i think charlies tackle is a bad example as the tackler still needs to impede the ball carrier. just holding on doesnt mean anything. you can run 20 yards with someone holding your guernsey if he isnt impeding you.

The issue Is players are so much stronger than they were 20 years ago They are 95kg and can bench press 150kgs ...they have core strength that's insane That's why it's so much harder to get them.down or winning a free kick

Where in the laws does it day reasonable time. The laws say must - prior oppotunity and legally tackled they must dispose of it immediately by hand or foot. There is no mention of reasonable. Laws of the game 18.6

ftlog reward the tackler. incorrect disposal gone. pinned ball up. no attempt gone. 360 gone. letting it wrestle on is creating the chicken wing tackle and other reactions.

It's going to cost a team a flag, needs to be clear cut, umps have too much say on result, the other rule that umps can't be trusted with is deliberate out of bounds, again this will cost a flag.

Get caught with the ball.................free kick.....Fixed.. Incorrect disposal..........................free kick.....Done... Illegal tackle or without the ball....free kick.....Easy.... It aint rocket sergery. Players and coaches will work it out and the ball will move.
