Also, customers usually don't know anything. One good example is a client I had this week. On the phone she told me she wanted to remove spider webs on her black Audi Paint. I suggested we do a one step correction that would remove about 60% of the spider webbing, remove the oxydation and make the paint glossy. She was happy with that service at the price offered. Her paint was trashed. I am 95% sure she goes to an automatic car wash with brushes because the entire paint had heavy scratches from front to back. So I completed the one step, removed most of the spider webbing and of course only a little of the deep scratches. When she came around, she said "Oh I thought it would remove the spider webs pointing at the deep scratches". I had to explain that these were not spider webs, those were heavy scratches, and it might be possible to remove them but it would take a lot more polishing and it would reduce the thickness of the paint a lot... and I did not recommend it. So in the end she decided not to do more polishing but it goes to show, sometimes poeple say things and they have no idea what they are talking about.

You didn't explain fully to the customer which means you didn't educate them properly.

@@fcnghkkc1that’s easy to say, but some customers you can explain till you’re blue in the face and they won’t understand or see it your way. Perfect paint is almost NEVER a realistic goal, especially in the case of this lady’s black Audi (daily driver). You can quote and book over the phone but everyone in this biz will eventually bump into a customer whose expectations aren’t realistic. Having a convo on the back end of things isn’t fun, but if you can speak calmly you can keep them happy in the end.

Would the cost of paint correction also be included in the initial car wash as well. Meaning the you charge them 150 for a standard car wash and the would you add on the “$400-$800” on top of that?

I had that same experience. I'm brand new to the game.. I was referred to someone from a friend. The customer wanted my express detail plus interior. When I saw the cars interior.. there was mold all over.. so I had to let the customer know that I can't do anything for the interior. And that's a job that would be a possibility days job to be done right.. but I will do everything for half of what I was charging half the work half the price. Customer was please with my work and honesty

Can you give advice on doing paint correction /polishing outside in the sun as a mobile detailer if u dont have a garage or a place to do paint corrections inside? Or did u still do them outside under a canopy or somthing? What is your advice on this?

What you think a one step paint correction should be around? I charge $300 but feel like it's to cheap

Yes, that is way too low for a one step. Even for a small car, it should be at least double that. Correction is a lot of effort and a specialized skillset that requires specific knowledge, which is why most people have us pros do it. Charge accordingly.

What is your assessment of your hourly rate? Don't gauge what the market rate is for a particular package. Sell yourself and why you're different so that's why you charge the specified price.

Ya, this year I switched to a per hour pricing for all paint correction. Not sure if clients are gonna like that or not but I feel it's the fairest way of doing it. No two vehicles are the same and trying to put a fix amount of time to make it a package is gonna mean either you or the customer is gonna be on the loosing side most of the time. Also with this formula, I can do what ever needs to be done within a certain amount of time to get a result both the client and I will be satisfied with. For example, on a one step, actually do a compound on the worst areas and a one step done faster on the entire vehicle.

There's no guarantee for the client. If you don't give an estimated time of completion of the job then you won't have any customers. You obviously don't have tier packages for different severity paint conditions. You need to rethink your pricing packages or you will only have basic interior and exterior detailing which makes minimal profit.

@@fcnghkkc1 For everything else than polishing I have packages. I try to avoid car wash style packages and focus on high end detailing. Still, I do have express packages for people who have really well maintained vehicles or the ones that don't want to pay for me to spend 5 hours inside the vehicle making everything perfect. Packages work well for things that takes the same amount of time to do like exterior details and interior detaiils. When you get into scratch removals or paint correction, it's an entirelly different story. I used to have packages for polishing. I might make some again because it's easier for customers.
