Hi everyone,
Welcome back to a new Timelapse video.
This is a short video of the growth evolution of my 'Washingtonia robusta' in 11 years here in Belgium.
Also known as 'Mexican fan palm'.
Planted out at the beginning of 2010, so now (2021) already 11 years in open ground @ Belgium. (Zone 8b)
Enjoy the video and the enormous growth of this beautiful Palm.
Dutch, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Polish subtitles are now also available for this video !😉👍

These grow all over in Northern CA, I'm so impressed how tolerant they are of any soil and cold.

Thanks for your comment. Yes, they grow well here too. But we have to protect & warm them well here during the winters. Unfortunately, this specimen from the video is currently on the verge of death. During the winter 2022 - 2023 it suffered heavy damage, from which it was very difficult to recover last year. It suffered spear rot again last winter, so I'm afraid it won't recover now. In any case, it is very weak now. Fingers crossed🤞

Sheesh, sorry to hear that. It's always tough to lose such an old plant. I had a echeveria for probably 20 years that I got since childhood, and in a matter of a year some type of white fungus took it out along with all of her pups; the leaves would shatter when touched. Leaf cuttings, new soil, repotting or nothing could help them. @@Dimi.Exotic.Garden

0:53 was that shelter to protect it from leaf burn in direct sunlight? I am having a very tough time with that happening to every palm I grow in MA. You put one out for day in direct sunlight, boom, every leaf instantly goes brown and dies when they may take months to grow fronds. when it's even growing I bought several seedlings of this species on ebay last year and they all died of leaf burn but I'm growing a bunch from seed now and they're doing well enough.
@Dimi.Exotic.Garden
@Dimi.Exotic.Garden Год назад
No William, that's not sun protection. What you see is the winter protection, eventually it will be closed when it gets really cold. Sunburning of the leaves only occurs if the plant has not been exposed to UV light for a very long time (weeks/months). So, for example, if you overwinter them indoors, or if the plants have grown up in a greenhouse and then have to go outside in the sun, or sometimes those from the store too... Then you always have to let the plants get used to U.V., so to the sun. You do this by first placing them in full shade, and then slowly building up sunlight... This process takes several days/weeks. If you don't do that and immediately put it in full sun, the leaves will indeed burn immediately. It's like with ourselves, after the winter when it's warm and sunny again in the spring, we shouldn't go naked because then our skin burns too... If the plants are constantly left outside and always gets sun/U.V., then they will not burn. My winter protection is always open, I only close it at times when it really freezes. Then open again on frost-free days.

I can say that the Phoenix has grown quite a bit in the meantime and is still doing very well. It came through the winter well again without damage. May I ask: What's the coldest it got where you live What's the most protection this needs Is it worth it?
@Dimi.Exotic.Garden
@Dimi.Exotic.Garden Год назад
Hi, The coldest I've experienced here is -18,5°C. This Washingtonia also survived that with the necessary protection. The Washingtonia itself has never seen colder temperatures than -5°C of course. Further inland in our small country, the temperature had gone down to -22°C. That was extreme at the time, but -10°C to -15°C also happens here occasionally. Although that is also more of an exception than a fact... Temperatures of -5°C often happen here, down to -10°C also reasonable, but certainly not every year. The winters are always very wet here, which is the biggest problem in combination with the cold. The best protection for this Washintonia is to build a box around it, consisting of well-insulating polycarbonate plates. In case of severe frost, you then have to close the box and heat it inside so that the temperature inside remains just above freezing. Is that worth it? I think so of course, but that's everyone's own choice. That way the palm certainly remains beautiful and survives every winter here as you can see in the video. Be sure to watch my other video about my winter protection for more info...

Also kühl und frostfrei überwintern.

@Dimi.Exotic.Garden
@Dimi.Exotic.Garden 2 года назад
Merci Imran. Nice!! Did you cut the fronds off each year or did they die? And did you protect this palm in the early years?
@Dimi.Exotic.Garden
@Dimi.Exotic.Garden 2 года назад
Thanks. Every year this Washingtonia gets a box around it as winter protection. But last year in the winter (2020 -> 2021) I could not have built this box around it because I was rehabilitating from an accident on my wrist/hand. So the palm was not protected and suddenly in February (2021) came an ice week with severe frost. (You can see that in my other video 'winter protection' -> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jh7Xwm9frDIh.htmlttps://ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jh7Xwm9frDI.html ) Then I pruned all the leaves because I was sure that the leaves would freeze to death. So without leaves I was able to pack the palm quite easily and quickly with cloths and heat cable as a quick emergency solution. That was just doable then with my hand and help from my brother... Otherwise I never prune leaves, only if the leaves are brown/dead. Yes, I have protected this Washingtonia every winter from the beginning with a box around it and with heating if necessary.

@Dimi.Exotic.Garden
@Dimi.Exotic.Garden 9 месяцев назад

Yes, I understand your reaction @hebneh. It is indeed a sin for the palms that they cannot grow up in ideal conditions. But because it is just as unique here, they luckily get a lot of extra love and care here, as you can see on my videos, so that they usually live in top condition. Sometimes better & more than in some (sub)tropical places... And with the exception of the winters, the conditions here are still very good for most species. But I understand your point...👍

@@cosmo_mosy First, plants are NOT "inanimate objects". They are alive; that's how they grow. And they eventually die as well, just like animals. For this palm, yes, that is harsh.
