Ever find yourself short on material and that one board you really need has a nice open knot in it? You could always go out and buy more material, but sometimes its just easier and faster to stabilize and repair the knot. And instead of trying to hide the knot, sometimes its just better to embrace it, and make it look look resinous and natural. And thats the goal here. I use an epoxy/dye mixture to create a stable and decorative knot.

One good tip I use is to use a hair dryer on the individual A and B part of the epoxy. The heat actually thins the epoxy and helps it flow better. It becomes less viscous and fills smaller holes etc.

Thanks for the vid:) When im using oils i just keep filling in the cracks but this usually take a while due to the low viscosity. This looks much easier and quicker!

It might, but once cured, I had never had a major problem. That said, I also tend to do this when the piece is very close to finish stage, so I don't often have the need of running it through the planer.

Aww, I would have liked to see a closeup of the finished knot. But either way, very informative video, and great production quality

Trying to find advice on REMOVING the epoxy fill from a knot - it is just TOO dark, and I'd like to use clear vs tinted epoxy. What's the best way to remove the epoxy without damaging the wood?

@vincent7520 I can't really comment on the boat building part of it, since I know little of that area. But when it comes to fine furniture, I think this is a perfectly acceptable way to stabilize the knot. Assuming it is kiln dried stock, it isn't going to get any drier than it already is, once it reaches equilibrium with its environment. Now in a boat, there is a lot more moisture involved so having the wood expand and contract around the knot definitely sounds like a bad thing.

@MisterFIXXX Quite a lot actually. Especially if you use a relatively loose epoxy mixture like I did, the epoxy will absorb into the surrounding wood and strengthen it dramatically. That being said, I wouldn't just throw that puppy in the planer. The blades hitting that big glop of epoxy would be a bad thing. Overall though, I find it to be very durable.

@Look2ugly1 You can certainly use a scraper. I have an old Stanley block plane that I reserve for "rough work" such as this. Its much faster than a card scraper. And I find a hand plane handles this "abuse" better than a scraper.

Mark, West offers four hardeners [205, 206, 207, and 209]; which hardener do you prefer to use in this instance? when would you use the others [if ever]?

If I were to pour a flood coat of epoxy down on a wood slab what would be the best way to prevent off gassing of the wood? Sanding sealer first? 2nd question if I'm filling knots with epoxy should i use a fast curing epoxy or slow? How far can I fill at once 1/8-1/2" at a time?

I missed some tearout on walnut top until I applied poly, can I epoxy it still and put some more poly on?

I use the same epoxy system, only I add the powder that makes it sandable. I guess I'm curious if using the epoxy alone would make that knotted bit harder to work through, like say running it through the planer?

The powder is colloidal silica. Wear A MASK!!!

Hi, I have to repair a knot in a table. But this table is already finished, it means that if I repair it, I wont be able to further polish or sand the surface, so, the repairment has to be almost plane at the end. What Can I implement?

Will using epoxy on a knot work for freshly cut wood you don't want to crack? I use a lot of natural wood and treat it with pentacryl to prevent cracks, but it still sometimes does. Any suggestions for treating fresh cut?
@woodwhisperer
@woodwhisperer 10 лет назад
I think pentacryl or anchorseal are products that work quite well for that purpose. The goal with wet wood is to slow down loss of moisture. Epoxy might actually seal it off completely and won't really allow the wood to breathe. So while it might hold a crack from getting worse, I don't think you'd want to use it as a sealing product for the drying process.

I don't have any experience in drying wood, but I do know that epoxy is one of the most popular materials used to seal both fiberglass and wooden boat hulls to prevent moisture damage. Needless to say boats are subject to extreme humidity, yet epoxy will keep the surfaces perfectly sealed for years. Hope this helps :)

a kno is a knot trueit won't break where the epoxy has set in but as long as the wood will continue to dry (and this may take a century !) the knot may have new creases and splits. This technique is ok for rough carpentry, I would never use in my field which is boat building.

if you stop riding your block plane it will stay sharp much longer,, it takes practice to raise it on every return stroke but you will save hours of sharping time....

Gently dropping the board when it is full of wet epoxy will force the air out and the fluid in. Think of how our wives drop a cake pan full of mix to get rid of the air pockets.

or hit it with flame removes bubbles and makes it thinner at higher temps allowing it to seep in , your idea is good too to use after the flame

Ah why not just use a new piece of wood bro
@donalddolan7709
@donalddolan7709 5 лет назад
Maybe because, as he said, you want to use the piece with the knot underneath (why waste wood) or you LIKE the look.

Plastic wood filler is much cheaper, far less toxic and way less expensive. Oh, and you can buy it in Home Depot or the local hardware store. This is an advertisement for West systems.

good idea but 6 hours? i would rather spend the money on a little extra wood so i can joint, plane etc all at once rather then wait for one piece. good tutorial though
