It's the 12 Days of Xmas! Twelve movies (or shows) that I think are interesting examples of their genres, have unique ideas, or are, in some other way, worth talking about.

HipTang story: one morning I walked out of my place all hungover. I walked down to the local 7-Eleven for a HipTang. I got phone call. It was my boss. She told me that I had just been promoted to Regional Manager at Wendy’s. I had never worked at Wendy’s a day in my life? But the new position came with a salary and a company car, two things I had never had in my life before either! I ran back home and, sure enough, there it was parked in my driveway. What a beauty that car was. A pristine 2010 Toyota Yaris. Oh the places I imagined I could go in this beast of a motor vehicle. As anyone would do with a car and a salary. I drove straight to Las Vegas with my girlfriend. By the time we got to Vegas. It was only 11:00 am. What a whirlwind of a few hours. I decided to play my luck at the casinos. The next 10 hours were all a blur, literally a blur as I think the hotel desk clerk slipped something nice into our HipTang. But I didn’t care. We hit the slots, played some cards, and ate at the fanciest restaurants we could find. By the time we got back to our penthouse suite atop the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in the center of the strip, I found myself with my now wife and no longer girlfriend, $17,485,653.22 in my checking account and a new home on the Galápagos Islands. I was impressed. I thought HipTang had lived up to everything I had heard about and that things could not get any better. I was wrong. I looked out my window and there it was. Not one, not two, but THREE bottles of HipTang. Warning: Do not taunt HipTang.

Hiptang is a sub-division of Shintalo Inc. which is another name for Umbrella Corp really. Regarding La Haine people say in the comments that they had to see it during their french class. As a french, the film wasn't required viewing in class but we went to see it in a movie theater and it was really a punch in the face. Especially when you're a kid, that film was memorable to say the least. It also was a remarkable turning point in the media, as it made obvious that at that point urban decay was real in France and it still is.

As a french person, i really am proud of our movies. And La Haine is a masterpiece i am attached to so i am glad to hear foreigners talk about it. French cinema is another world compared to Hollywood and i hope people get to discover it, discover us - not through the lenses of romanticized stories but brutally sincere tales.
@postmodernrecycler

Totally agree. There is something about the French sensibility in their films that achieves something much more philosophical than Hollywood. I sometimes wonder if Hollywood even wants to think.
@JoeBleasdaleReal

A level French students unite! I think this film might be my most viewed ever just because deep analysis of why Vinz pointed the gun in a certain direction or why Saïd kept telling that story that went nowhere etc. was literally on our curriculum. Smashing film, anyway. And sadly still very relevant. P.S. it’s pronounced “la en”.
@user-mq3um5iu2q

Why does he point it at the mirror? I thought it was a reference to, "Taxi Driver" and his wish to emulate that kind of vigilantism in a society which he despairs. Does anyone *actually* understand the Grumwalski scene?
@alainportant6412
@alainportant6412 2 года назад
Actually you just need to say the letter "N" la N, your N is what is needed. But no unfortunately it is really not relevant. I've been living outside of paris for 30 years and I have never heard of skinheads roaming the streets to attack arabs and blacks, actually it's the exact opposite and everybody here knows it. Police violence was an actual thing during the yellow vests when thousands of people lost hands or eyes or whatever, but the equivalent would NEVER happen in the "suburbs" 😂. Every time some idiot over there dies in a motorcycle crash during a rodeo with the cops, we can't hear the end of it on tv and twitter, and the president has to make a speech and apologize. La haine in itself was a very good movie with dubious political motives ( create interethnic tensions sort of like the BLM thing today, which Kassovitz is very aware of ) so I sort of understand why this is being blasted to french students abroad.
@user-mq3um5iu2q
@user-mq3um5iu2q 2 года назад
@@alainportant6412 My understanding is Kassovitz saw an injustice, he saw a young man butchered by the police, and wrote this most compelling film. It's a rather dubious thing to say that, 'it's exactly the opposite and everyone knows it' concerning racial abuse. The point of the film was not a fight between races, it's a conflict between the classes. If it was purely a matter of race, then you would have to find some convoluted way to explain the art exhibition scene, and why Vinz is discriminated against by complete strangers. It's a film about injustice, about class. The role of race in the film is obviously perceptible and important, but it's not the primary point. If it were, why then would the film end with Vinz being slaughtered?

ah… what a blast from the past! i think i saw this in high school. anyway, the breakdance and dj scenes rly resonated with me in the sense that it felt… universal, or at least shared to an extent in regards to my neck of the woods at the time. also introduced me to Edith Piaf and MC Solaar. of the latter, his song le Nouveau Western felt like another sentiment my cohorts identified with - outsiders(outlanders?) having to travel within, constantly pushing against a sort of institutionalized siege mentality that wanted to own and direct you. heh need to go pour myself a drink. cheers.

I had no idea this was used in french classes abroad 😂 That movie had a great influence on the kids over here, a lot of music, attitudes and of course drug habits from that movie were still very popular when I was in secondary school in the 2005's or whatever and I have no reasons to doubt this has changed. Although the movie is sort of violent, the situation in these suburbs was still tenable in 1996. Even in the early 2000's we didn't see the kind of violence that we have today. These people have become more and more stupid and aggressive, that reflects in todays rap and in the number of crimes. Also take into consideration that after the attacks of Nice (2016) and Paris (2015) , people started looking quite differently these once "glamorized" suburbs and their inhabitants.
