To be fair, that's not really the voice actors messing up or anything, that's just a glitch more than anything. I remember one fun instance I had in Oblivion, where the two Twins met up in that one quest and the proceeded to swap backstories. And by that I don't mean that they shared their stories, I mean a glitch occured and they started to tell the wrong backstories to each other.
That's not a fail, that's actually done to emphasize the fact that those beggars are acting when they're begging you. Once you actually give the coin, they drop the act.
reminds me of the skooma guy that you have to kill in the dark brother hood quest line. He sounds strung out at first, then initiate the speech craft mini game and sounds like a regular person.
I don't understand why some of these actors, especially in the early days of video game voice acting, sound like they don't understand what words mean. Like they sound like native English speakers, just putting all the emphasis on the wrong words and syllables.
Well, I don't know for sure, but I would assume many actors record their lines without reading through the script first and/or remembering the punctuation, therefor causing them to be unsure of themselves when they read. It's like back in school, when someone reading would think there is/isn't a comma/period there, when it's quite the opposite, giving a reading such as this: "The emperor was best known for their construction on roads. where many travelers traded objects of value."
In the case of Resident Evil, it was that the Japanese sound engineers apparently preferred the rhythm of the lines rather than if they would've made sense to an English speaker. It is likely that the cause of bad acting is just a case of the Japanese not understanding how English should be spoken.
You will be surprised how wooden some people are when they're told that they need to do acting. I did a student film with several of my college friends and they act and talk like normal person in everyday life but the moment camera or microphone directed at them they suddenly act like a stupid robot.
@Nagoragama You said, "Like they sound like native English speakers, just putting all the emphasis on the wrong words and syllables". Putting emphasis on all the wrong words and syllables would make you sound like a NON-native English speaker, don't ya think?
Y'all missed the joke. The character who says that line isn't a random woman. She heads the media department at a famous art school. People in the arts often have a reputation among the public at large for being pretentious and using lots of big language. So her saying "God, I love art" to herself is like a chef at a famous restaurant whipping up all these fancy, high-cuisine dishes but then enjoying McDonald's when they're on their own time.
Yeah, many of those SotN lines were pulled straight from the bible, and the others are otherwise actually quite gramatically correct to a degree, somewhat.
"Wait a minute let me do that one again..." Well at least she's aware it was a horrible delivery, unlike about 90% of the other examples of voice acting drek depicted here ;P
In Oblivion the beggars voice acting mixes up so they alternate between sounding young and fit to like they are slowly dying of a terminal illness, seemingly totally at random.
Bah! You get that with more major characters in all of the Elder Scrolls & Fallout games...I've seen them not only changing style and accents, but completely change to a different voice actor altogether in the same dialog. Of course...I still love them all, to varying degrees. :)
Actually, I think the beggar thing was deliberate. They spoke in the elderly British accent when acting the part of beggars and had the younger voices when they were acting as Thieves' Guild agents, just to hammer into the player's heads that their beggaring was partly an act.
I don't get why the Jill sandwich line is so popular when in the same game you get a man lying at death's door with his entrails spewing out of him and he just peacefully cries "Ouch...", twitches twice and then dies. Still the best worst line delivery in the original RE. I also like the master of lockpicking one better than the sandwich one.
palmieres It's the mix of the delivery, as well as the "dad joke" bit that lift it up to where it is. There are lines that are delivered far worse, and other Barry dad jokes. However it's the delivery being as serious as possible, while making a dad joke over his comrade literary nearly being killed moments before. Her laughing at said joke at the expense of her nearly becoming a Jill sammich, doesn't help. Months later, but now you have at least ... One opinion to think on in regards to your (probably) rhetorical question.
The Oblivion one is not a voice acting fails at all. The voice actor wanted to do a better take and the audio guy didn't make the cut properly later on.
The same could be said of all actors in movies or TV. The directors shoot the film, and the editors chop and change, so if there's any footage that's 'bad' there's so many people who could be blamed, not just the actor.
This list is actually quite legitimately done. No amateur mistakes, no objective opinions flowed through, the picks in the video were things that were not overused, the script writer clearly knew what he was talking about with the examples of different games while the voice actor modeled the tone the script was given completely, no footage of effects were overly used to compensate for the review, and the jokes were done in a very tasteful manner. Ignorance is the greatest grievance when it comes to these things, as it is a representation of knowledge and a review of games and moments in games we particularly find joy in. Good job.
+kackiz I'm still salty over the DMC thing where they were they had a top 10 swords and one of them was Sparda AND THEY SHOWED DANTE FROM DmC WHO CLEARLY WIELDS THAT GAMES VERSION OF REBELLION AND ALSO A REBOOT WHILE SHOWING FOOTAGE OF DMC1 DANTE HOLDING SPARDA. Like how dumb do you get? One makes Dante a demonic god and shoot dragons while one turns into multiple weapons based on demonic or angelic affinities; not that hard if you played any of the games.
I knew HotD2 would be no.1, most hilarious voice acting of all time. Me and my brother would constantly take the piss out of the voice acting as kids lol
The lines themselves, for handy quick reference: Chaos Wars - 0:57 Mega Man 8 - 1:52 Last Alert - 2:09 Deep Fear - 3:29 Resident Evil - 4:16 Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - 5:05 Sonic Adventure - 5:45 Tenchu: Stealth Assassins - 6:19 Michigan: Report from Hell - 7:00 The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - 7:40 House of the Dead 2 - 8:23
Oblivion has so many odd lines. Never heard the 'wait let me do that one again' one before, then again I never did the thieves guild shit. The one's I don't like is when you hear a beggar say to a guard "I'm so hungry" and then in response "The Best Defense sells fine light armor" It's mostly ironic when they mention the feed bag in response.
BeefBacon Yeah, they go through the trouble to get voices specifically for beggars, then don't do anything. Else with it. Also how every important vampire NPC is male because they didn't bother getting a female voice actor for vampires.
In addition to that fail in Oblivion, it would be great to see all the different characters voiced by the same 12 actors put up together in a montage 😂
Well, there's that great line in Skyrim, "There's a DRAGON attacking" which sound like it's delivered more like "You left the toilet seat up again" but i mean.... HumbleNoob pointed that one out to me
You were pretty on point for most of this, but as for Sonic DX with Tails sounding like an 8 year old, it’s probably because the character is in fact 8 years old. So I thought the dialog fit quite a bit.
@@anlumo1 Yeah, but then you get fiasco's like young Jack Marston in RDR2. Aside from his voice being less-than-appealing, I've never heard a more well spoken 5 year old in my life. Doesn't stammer over a single word in the entire game, and has a solid vocabulary. Not necessarily a bad job of voice acting, just not believable for the role.
@@chrisseger2346 Exactly why I can't buy original Japanese Makoto Naegi in DanganRonpa. Artificially generic high school-age boy with a clearly woman's voice? No. I am NOT a "kinda close" sort. You ARE The Weakest Link-goodbye. *makes sure to take crusher off of the network* His English VA's performance is just as bad, though, but for a different reason: he sounds WAY too much like a weenie. He's only supposed to be bland, which the Japanese VA to her credit DOES nail.
There has never been, is not, nor will there ever be a line in video games voice acted worse than Farengar and that fucking, *"Come to Dragon's Reach to discuss the ongoing hostilities... like the rest of the great warriors?".*
Serena Morrison Karliah has a very pleasant voice, actually. If you're having trouble hearing her, you might want to check the volume on your center channel, or at least try looking off to her left or right when you're talking to her to put her on multiple sound channels and through multiple speakers. . Barbus if fucking hilarious and indestructible! I actually dragged him all the way over to Bonestrewn Crest and let him kill the dragon, a sabre cat, and a giant. It took a while, but it was fun to watch!
Young Frankenstein I went through the whole of the main quest like with him because he's essential as well as a good destruction and fighter 😂 I'll try what you recommended
I'm gonna comment on this --wait let me do that again -- iM gOnNa CoMmEnT oN ThIs - wait a sec let me do that again - IMMMA COMMENT ON THIS VIDEEEOOOOOO
His voice acting was on point given that the character just lost his entire family and was about to die himself, knew it, but had no way to get out of it. Nothing 'phoned in' about it.
He's actually acted just fine… usually. Knuckles, meanwhile, was pretty much "Whatev." from Start to Finish. Kinda fits their actual intelligence, actually.
A couple of years late but freaking awesome video! Brilliant. I remember that chick in Oblivion. I was so confused about what I was hearing all those years ago lol.
One of the reasons older games from Japanese companies have bad English voice acting is that the Sound engineers would apparently prefer the rhythm of how the words were spoken despite it not sounding correct to an English speaking person, in the case of Resident Evil they also apparently had little context given for their lines either so that'll affect the delivery. This is probably why most companies use language producers nowadays.
After a long rabbit hole of youtube videos, this is one that not only made me literally laugh out loud, possibly waking my roommate, but my nasal passages hurt from coke coming out my nose.
haven't started this video yet....but if Just Cause 2's entire cast (or at the very least, supporting cast) isn't on here, I will be highly disappointed.
chrissy boi That was what made it so awful, the gameplay was brilliant, the setting was beautiful but every time a character opened their cock-holster to speak, I wanted to cut my ears off and scream at the sky.
This is literally my favorite video ever. I am in tears laughing every time I watch it, and I’ve watched it at least 20 times since I found it 3 years ago. Truly the happiness I need in quarantine
I remember playing MM8 as a kid after getting it and the PlayStation from my older cousin who had just gotten the PS2 at the time and being like “Why? Why would you do this?”
it got me so many times back when I actually liked to play DW games.... upon finding it again, I still laughed my ass off. Some terrible things age well
Imagine someone tying someone up, and said: 'Here is our screams for our video game.' Hangs spider close to the actor/actresses face and the person screams.
I had to stop the video after the 7:16 scene, so I can take a minute to laugh out loud before continue watching. What is more scary in that scene? The t-shirts in the wardrobe or the nurse? Well... there is a corpse there too, but that is not scary, I guess...
it was intentional they where trying to cheer themselves up with forced laughing, I mean for fuck sake they laugh normally AT the fake laughing a few seconds later.
it was still cringe worthy as hell...that said, I wouldn't put the game on a top ten worst VA list... though the remasters sure gave it a boost, since the only thing they updated was the textures, made the 2000 Voice Acting and animation look hilariously terrible...
this made me happy during mild torture (I have a poorly managed pain disorder and am recovering from an "invasive" test), so thanks very much :) New sub!
sillypinkewe - Games are good that way. Distraction therapy for the win. (I have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome & fibromyalgia, am on a litre of liquid morphine per week that doesn't do enough, so I feel ya.)
In Skyrim (italian language) the fire master wizard at the end of a sentence involving the fire wizard quest line says: ”did I spell it correctly right?”
" think you i would forget such a thing? what do you here? your words are as empty as your soul! mankind ill needs a savior such as you! how is it that i've been so defeated? " - made my english teacher proud.
well I tried to translate it word to word Ton.german. Up to the Mankind line it fits very well. I love the complicate freedom of grammar in german. It is only a problem if you translate it back like in this game with the original language.
Have you tried to word-by-word translate Yoda's lines into Latin? Into Latin, Yoda's lines, word-by-word to translate, tried, have you? Yoda's lines into Latin to translate, have you word-by-word tried?
Actually the Castlevania dialogue is technically correct...it's just acted so poorly that the delivery makes it sound like nonsense. Except maybe "What do you here"...that's probably wrong.
Well certainly in a verbal conversation that would be the rule and it would be obvious, but written conversations are less so. Especially since so many people take to addressing the BEGINNING of your statements and never even cover the last things said.
Getting the appropriate voice actors is half the job. You need to direct them as to how you want the line to be said as well. When I did ADR for the first time at uni I had to ask my mums partner and my sister to voice the 2 main characters. In the end I got extra marks for a realistic sounding ADR (when my friends got lower marks for unnecessary exaggeration even though they used professional voice actors). Just because you drive a Lamborghini doesn't mean you're a good driver.
I dunno what's funnier: the guy screaming like half an hour after the corpse falls out or just the hilarious *splat* that it makes when it hits the ground
