I needed to make an updated comment! I have officially gotten my IUD out! I had previously said I was terrified to get this done because of the immense pain from the insertion. It was not like that at all! Obviously there was a slight small amount of pain, but it was so small and fast. 0 pain afterwards. I had made myself so worried for nothing! I hope this helps and calms anyone who is scared. I promise it isn't that bad!
Thank you so much for this video I was so nervous ! I am on my way to get it removed and getting it placed was one of the worst pains I’ve ever experienced I’m glad to hear the removal is not as painful
For real! I have an appointment this week to talk about getting mine removed. Ive been terrified! Getting it in was the worst pain in my life but the 2 or 3 days of torture was worth the 6.5 years of bliss.
Sethu Siwele hi girl! I feel okay. I feel so relieved. I had cramps for like 30-45 minutes, nothing serious. I haven’t had my period yet, but I feel it coming. I had mine removed like 3 weeks ago.
Me in labor: "I'm good, thank you for asking. When you get a second, I think maybe we could start planning for my epidural..." Nurse: *Shoooook at how calm I am* Me during IUD insertion: "OH F_CK!!!!"
Lmfaoo is it really that bad?? I'm suppose to get one in 8 weeks cause I'm currently 4 weeks post partum but I don't plan on getting the IUD at my 6 week post partum appmt because I did tear and it is still pretty painful so I am going to wait another 6 weeks (maybe longer 😅) before returning to sexual relations lol so I ain't worried about pregnancy before getting my IUS
@@andreabengoa9670 mine was horrific and I ended up on the floor in the drs office. I was not on my period by the way, which lessons the pain they say.
Just got mine out today. This video was really comforting to me because I was very scared to get it removed. Having it put in was scary. I also haven’t had it checked during the five years I had it. After I had my youngest child I had to quit my job to stay at home with my kids. So I lost my health insurance. I also waited five months after it “expired” to get it out. I just kept putting it off. But getting it removed wasn’t that bad. It hurt a little, more like uncomfortable. But it came right out. It took about 10 seconds. My fear was it was stuck in there because I never had it checked. But it came out just fine. If you are scared to get it removed. Don’t be. It should go ok. This coming from someone who never had it checked or checked the strings. Which I don’t recommend. It’s just the way it happened for me.

I had my Mirena removed 2 weeks ago today after having one in for over 15 years (3 changes). This would be my last one until I'm 52, but I'm 49 and wanted it out to rule out the continued problems I'm having. The removal was quick and painless. So far I have had no negative symptoms, no bleeding, etc. My legs feel better, no longer achy and I seem to have more energy. I have FBS, so I really think this was making my symptoms way worse. I don't know why it took me so long to realize this may be the culprit, but after praying on it, my answer came to me from my sister. God is so good!
I had mine removed yesterday and I had near instant relief. I was diagnosed with pseudotumor cebral a year ago and every doctor I talked to said nope, not caused by Mirena and I think that is the biggest problem is that most doctors don't listen to their patients (there are some that do, but very rare these days). I am 24 hours post removal now and have no headache and I can see my cellphone without my glasses and the damn thumping in my ear from the pressure is no longer there ...I was literally going insane. The IUD definitely was not for me
If a woman is still having periods (and hasn’t entered into menopause) pregnancy is still possible (although much less likely, still possible- so contraception is still recommended if pregnancy is not planned).
I am actually one of those very rare cases where they just weren't able to remove it. I visited 2 Gynaecologists and neither of them was able to remove it because the IUD moved all the way up in my uterus. I've had it for a little over 5 years now and I just hope I'll be able to have the removal procedure done soon since it has given me so many problems that I thought were not related to the IUD but turns out they are. I really appreciate you doing this video and all of the information you provide Dr.Dervaitis, thank you!
Hi Adriana- I am sorry to hear you’ve experienced this rare situation. Your doctors will guide you through the next steps. Thanks so much for your comment, I’m glad you found the videos helpful. Wishing you all the best, -Dr. Dervaitis
😢 Hi I'm in this situation right now...I have tried to get the IUD removed twice, by tools, and the doctors have told me that I need to go under surgery, because there is no string, and it has moved up into the uterus. Do you know how risky this surgery is? Would this be a case in which a Laparoscopy is next, and how is scarring?
Thank you so much! My appointment is coming up for my removal and having no idea what to expect is scary, but this is very comforting to know it’s way less painful than insertion.
I'm so over the constant non stop bleeding since I had a mirena put in 6 months ago and the constant utis (which I've never had in my life) I can't wait to have my mirena out tomorrow. Oh please let it go well. I am praying even though I am not religious.
@@oct480did you lose the weight after? I had mine removed yesterday and this morning my weight jumped ANOTHER 3 lbs for a grand total of 20. I’m so humiliated I don’t even want to leave the house
I got my Kyleena put in last April, and it was the worst pain I have ever experienced. I had a vasovagal reaction shortly after and passed out in front of the nurses. They wheeled me back and my GYN kept an eye on me for about 2 hours. For the past 9 months, I have had nearly constant abdominal pain and cramping. I finally got it removed today. It didn’t even hurt! More like something slightly pinched me for a moment, and my cramps literally vanished in a matter of seconds. It’s not scary at all, and literally takes less than 10 seconds.
i just removed my iud after having it for 3 years. the doctor couldn’t find the strings and tried to pry for it for about 10 min. then they used a small camera at the end of the instrument to find the strings in the cervix. right then they were able to find the strings and pull it out. It was scary at first but so happy it’s out now!
Hi- Glad to hear everything turned out OK! Although it’s not common for strings to get “lost” like that, we do have some tricks and tools to help us with the removal in that situation. All the best, -Dr. Dervaitis
My removal was SO painful. I actually screamed and jumped back. Dr told me it's rare to have pain but I should have been told it was possible. She also didn't say anything about the cramps that continued after. If I knew it was going to be that bad I may have left it in longer. I loved it but have been trying to lose weight and wanted to see how it is affecting my weight loss.
Hi Andreanna- It’s possible that primary dysmenorrhea (ie. painful periods with no pathological cause) might get worse with a copper IUD. Some women (not all) may experience increased menstrual cramping with a copper IUD. Conversely, the levonorgestrel (hormonal) IUD is actually used as TREATMENT for primary dysmenorrhea, with up to 70% of users noting less painful periods. -Dr. Dervaitis

Thank you so much for this video. My IUD strings went "missing" within a few months of insertion. Doctor couldn't locate them but confirmed with an ultrasound that the IUD is where it should be. Now years later it's time for removal and I'm beyond nervous. This video gave me some peace of mind. Update: After an unsuccessful first attempt at removal last month, I finally had it removed yesterday. It was a more invasive procedure and was admittedly uncomfortable but not too painful. My strings were apparently very short and wrapped around the iud itself.
@@simransk2004 unfortunately I am one of the 1-5% discussed in this video. They couldn't find the strings and it hurt too much to continue, so I will be going back next month where they'll use a different method to attempt removal. I had mine (Liletta) inserted at 17 in 2017, it was the worst pain I've ever felt in my life (and I've had a tooth drilled by a dentist without any sort of numbing). I had horrible cramping to the point that I cried while my mom let me squeeze the life out of her hand. I bled nonstop for 3 months straight afterward, it gave me acne I never had, sharp stabbing cramps I never had, mood swings from hell. I also haven't been able to keep any weight I gain. I've been stuck at 115-120 lbs for 5 years and I feel far more comfortable with myself at a heavier weight. Literally the only positive I got from it was the fact that I haven't gotten pregnant in the last 5 years that I've had it. I'm preparing to have mine removed this year and needless to say, I've been absolutely dreading the removal since the day of insertion. I'm hoping removal won't be as bad as the insertion 🤞🤞🤞 because this IUD has been one of my main sources of stress for the last 5 years of my life.
For clarification to any other viewers reading this comment, if a patient is unhappy with their IUD experience, it can be removed at ANY time (it does not need to remain for the full five years). There is neither evidence for weight loss nor gain with the hormonal IUD. Individual anatomy varies, and so each patient’s IUD insertion is unique. Studies have shown that 70% of patients rate their IUD insertion as mild to moderate pain. There is a subset of the population that may experience more significant pain, it is difficult to predict. Contraception is about choice. If the idea of potential pain at IUD insertion is unacceptable, consider other options.

Hi! I had lower back pain 6years(copper coil)removed it today.Feeling so light down there👇 Maybe I will sound mad but my back pain disappeared straight after removal. What experience did you have ?
I have a tilted uterus and I haven't had my strings checked in a long time... Im scared to get mine out in three weeks. The pain of putting it in was just horrible..
I was told to cough and as I coughed the nurse pulled gently, as she pulled it out (mirena), nothing to worry about it was over very quickly and did not hurt. It hurts more to put mirena in in the first place. Watch out for quite a heavy period which for me was in the week after removal, I was never normally heavy but I’m talking changing pads every 20 minutes, the heavy period lasted 5 days normal period length.
After removal all is good, apart from the heavy bleeding which lasted 5 days like a period would. The mirena caused me to swell up on boobs and stomach and gain weight, I looked horribly bloated.Once it was taken out all that disappeared. From research it looks like because you don’t bleed during having it in your body holds onto toxins and fluid. I would never recommend mirena.

Thank you so much for this information! Very helpful! I am getting my IUD removed this week (as we are trying to get pregnant). I have been so nervous about the removal (I have had it in for almost 5 years). But this has gave me some reassurance.
If you can offer and words or knowledge I would be very grateful. I just had mine removed it broke during the removal..., one ‚arm‘ of IUD is now stuck inside of me. My gynecologist said that this has happened for the first time in her working career of over 30 years. The removal was absolutely painless and even now I am not experiencing any pain, but I am just scared. I read up on stuff online, that I might need an operation that could lead to not being able to get pregnant and even infertility... I am a bit scared and worries now, this seems to be a rare case and i‘m trying to not let my anxiety run for the worst case scenarios. Everything else was good though, I didn‘t have any larger issues, even the Insertion was absolutely painfree, but I‘m very worries now about having one part of the IUD inside of me :/ ...
See also video #27. (Removal is not necessary for the situation of “lost strings”, but of course it is up to each individual to decide what’s right for them.) Fortunately, an IUD can be removed at any time. -Dr. Dervaitis
Hi gm i put in a 5 yearIUD in 2006 and i take it out my IUD in 2017 so it will be for 2 year and 5 months now and i not give pregnant y can u place help me
I guess I’m that rare person of less than .1%. My first IUD was placed in the operating room under anesthesia as I had a D&C and hysteroscopy with it. The removal of that one was fine in the office. But my physician was unable to insert a new one because I had stenosis of the cervix. My current one has been in too long and needs to be removed. My doctor tried in the office but the strings were gone and the IUD had migrated. So now I get to go to the operating room again to have a hysteroscopy with removal of the IUD. Murphy’s Law follows me. LOL
I had my bud removed yesterday through a surgical procedure. I was sedated and I am experiencing cramps and a lot of out removal symptoms. please do a video on it.
Hi- Sorry, I can’t really commit to doing a video on this, it is not common to require surgical removal of an IUD (although I did already discuss this possibility in the video). All the best, -Dr. Dervaitis
Can you tell me why you needed sugery?? My gyno told me today i have to get surgery he couldn’t remove my iud in office and order for post of surgery at the hospital? Im literally so scared what if he hurts me trying to yank it out and messes up my uterus😭😭
Barbara Villa Hi. Apparently the string got lost and they couldn’t take it out just like that. They had to put in a tool that had a camera to properly get it out. It only took about 30mins and it wasn’t painful but you’ll get cramps afterwards.
Having an IUD inserted without good pain measures (sedation/pain meds) is inhumane. I’ve had a total of 3 IUD’s. I need to have my current one removed because it’s expired, but I’m way too scared
Some medical procedures can cause discomfort: having blood drawn, a mammogram, colonoscopy, major surgery… There is a spectrum of discomfort, and not all procedures warrant sedation or exposure to the risk of anaesthesia. Large studies (and my own experience with inserting close to a thousand IUD’s every year) confirm that the vast majority of patients experience no pain, or only mild to moderate pain. I routinely have patients comment after their insertion: “that’s it?!” or “that wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it would be”. Severe pain is much less common and unfortunately there is no way to predict which patients will have more pain than others. Unfortunately, studies have shown that pre-medication, freezing, or topical anaesthetic agents do not significantly decrease the discomfort associated with the insertion. It is up to each individual to weigh the risks and benefits of any contraceptive method and decide on the option that is best for them. Most patients feel that the short term discomfort of an IUD insertion is worth the long term benefits. If the possibility of discomfort is unacceptable, there are other contraceptive options to consider. -Dr. Dervaitis
Thank you so much for this info! My Mirena is due to be removed in about 4 months, and I was starting to get nervous about it because of how severely I cramped when it was inserted.
I am in the 1% for the second time. I am actually sitting in the waiting room to remove the Copper T under ultrasound guidance. I was going to put the Mirena in this time because my period is still heavy after 3 years of having the Copper T and the same was true with the one I removed 3 years ago. My period never went back to normal and it was always a messy and embarrassing experience. Now that I see that I have to basically have it surgically removed again, I changed my mind about putting in the Mirena. I CANNOT go through this experience a third time; it is horribly painful I want to explore the option of tubal ligation🤦🏾♀️. Praying about it.
I’m getting mine removed to see if I’m able to lose some weight, I gained about 60 pounds being on it in the last 5 years... so I already set up my appointment, anyone have results on that??
Not much, in the waiting room to get mine out now actually. Did also gain close tot 35 pounds though, I was always extremely constant in my weight and even started eating healthier and working out more (cycling for 3 hours a day five days a week) after getting the iud, but the weight kept piling on. Hope this changes after having it removed!
I have pcos (polycystic ovary syndrome) and was recommended by doc to get the mirena IUD to lessen heavy bleeding. First attempt at insertion in docs office failed so I was referred to hospital to be put under with anaesthesia and have it inserted. Pain after I woke up post procedure was like nothing I’ve ever felt. I could barely walk for weeks, the cramps woke me up every night crying, and the bleeding was constantly heavy. It’s now 4 months later and the cramps are still there, bleeding is still really heavy and I have to take painkillers almost daily. I’ve also had major skin rashes, acne and alot of anxiety and depression since getting the Mirena. My doc is refusing to remove my IUD until it’s been 6 months, so I have to wait 2 more months.. but I can’t wait to have the bloody thing removed! This video is very reassuring, i was so scared about getting it removed, thinking it would be just as painful. The comments on this video are also super helpful. Thank you!

Had mine removed today, it's the second and LAST one I'll ever have. I never had pain during insertion or removal before today. It was the absolute worst because doc said he couldn't reach the strings; I think the bed space was too cramped. He was using multiple tools to poke and pull and it was alot more blood than I would have imagined it should be. He decided to move to another exam room with a bed that was much lower and within a minute, it was out. It just seemed to be ridiculous to go through that much pain if it could have been avoided.

There is no scientific evidence to support the concept of the “Mirena Crash”. Very little hormonal gets into the bloodstream (measured in units that are a trillionth of a gram, 100x less compared to the pill). There is such a low level in the circulation to begin with, the drop in progesterone levels upon discontinuation is minor. Most women using Mirena continue to ovulate and it does not have an impact on natural hormone cycling (which simply continues after removal). -Dr. Dervaitis

I told my nurse she told me to come immediately and the Gyno said it was hanging out my cervix and he tried to remove it and he said oh its stuck and he just yanked it and it came out It was so painful. since that day Ive been having cramps randomly but no spotting
You ask why people would remove it themselves? One word: Uninsured. So help me do it as safely as possible. Otherwise, it'll be PVC pipe, a flashlight, tweezers glued & zip-tied to tongs or something, and some poor person to help...OR... an impressive contortion of anatomy and attempt at the most important blind pinching task ever.

I'm going into the obgyn today to get the copper iud removed, I'm uninsured, and I will be paying $417.93 for it. My friends told me to go to a free clinic but I know I'll be better taken care of by a professional. It sure will put a large dent in my account. I want my body to balance out because I'm sure the iud has been the culprit of making my body have a basically month long period so I need it out of there. I have had it in sense June of 2011. It is time ☺
I'm so glad I went in today, my obgyn found that mine is embedded. She broke one of the strings off trying to get it out. She got one of the other male obgyns to try and he broke the other off. I need surgery to get it removed. They used all of their tools to try and grab the iud it's self and it would not come out the few times they had hold of it. The iud is now stringless and who knows how long it's been embedded. I'm finding insurance now to pay for the procedure. The one obgyn has had one other patient that had happen to her what is happening to me. I'm in experienced hands! Thank you!
Hi Jacqueline- Sometimes a bit of bleeding or brief mild cramping after IUD removal, but not usually any major side effects (because it is a hormonal IUD, your periods may change... essentially they would go back to what they were like before Liletta). -Dr. Dervaitis

There are different kinds of copper IUD’s, with different duration of use/ efficacy timeframes (many are 5 years, ,some are 10 years...) Self removal is not generally recommended (as I mention in the video...) but I’ve had lots of questions on this topic during the pandemic (with some patients having difficulty getting in to see their doctor). I hope it came out intact and that there aren’t any complications! All the best, Dr. Dervaitis
As far as reasons for self removal. I was told such a short procedure would be well over $500 even at Planned Parenthood. So I am considering it in order to save money and because I don't have access to insurance.
@@beccaaakre5378 for reals cause im about to pull mine myself ive done it before but im nervous now for some reason guess cause had it for 6 years, if it was embedded wouldnt i be able to feel it right?? like thats why im scared to pull it myself, plus i never have a babysitter to watch my girls so i can go to office
Mine hurt very bad when she pulled it out so bad that I jumped and my back hurt for 3 days and my sciatica and where she pulled it from I've had three IUD through the years never hurt that bad coming out.
I am thinking about removing my IUD. I am nervous because my strings are not showing and I don’t want it to hurt as bad as the insertion or much pain. The only reason I am unhappy with it is because of weight gain and stomach cramps that lead to my back.
Update, had my iud removed less than 12 hours ago and it was not a struggle really, just some discomfort and started spotting after about an hour. Was given antibiotics and as I type this I feel nauseous, I’ve thrown out once but most definitely feeling nauseous.
Hi Dr. Kristina. Thank you for your video, it’s very helpful, informative and comforting. 👌 In my case, my IUD string was removed accidentally. I just noticed it when I was taking a shower. The next day I told my husband to try locate if my IUD was removed in the proper position. And he easily located it and got it removed. What can you say about this doctor?
I had a horrible first experience the first time 5 years ago. They cut the strings too short and it way wayyy to high when in was Inserted. They took 5 minutes to do it. But he was so nice and been so careful with me. And now I’m getting mines removed tomorrow my youngest is 4 and I’m soooo scared
Sorry to hear about your experience. Best wishes on your removal- it is usually a far easier and less uncomfortable procedure compared to insertion. -Dr. Dervaitis
I am nervous for nothing. I asked my doctor and she said its so quick not to worry about. My husband wants a baby again so i hope i can get it out and in time for baby to be born by November 😅btw my insertion didnt hurt at all cuz i was on my period!
I had 2 IUD in in me, the first one come out a year after it was put in... The second one was put in after a month the first one came out.. I got pregnant with the second one, I carried the baby 3months.. I assume that when they done a dnc on me it came out ... I got pregnant with my fourth baby, bout two n a half years later... n I never had any more children.. fast forward to today, I had an renal ultrasound done a month ago n they ask me if I had a IUD in me I said I did n thought it came out..
I had my Mirena removed 11 days ago. My provider at the health clinic couldn't find one of the strings so she sent me to Planned Parenthood where they easily removed it. I'm 51 years old and have had a Dr and a NP tell me my only options for birth control were another Mirena or the Depo Provera shot. I didn't like either choice so I was stressing about it. While I was at Planned Parenthood, I discussed this with the lady who took out my IUD and she told me I could get on a progesterone only pill and it would not be dangerous or a problem so I bought a pack of Tulana 0.35 mg to start taking. I'm on my 9th day of taking them. I was just wondering what your opinion is of me being on the Tulana. My only health history concerns are high blood pressure and cholesterol but they are under control with meds. Thank you for any input. I'm confused as why 2 providers would tell me I couldn't take any form of pill for BC but the lady at PP said it was perfectly fine. Thank you.
Hello- While I can’t give personalized medical advice over the internet, I can say that generally speaking, a progesterone only pill is an absolutely acceptable method for a woman in her 50’s (even with a history of high blood pressure and high cholesterol). Mirena, Depo PROVERA, and the progesterone only pill are all acceptable progesterone only options. -Dr. Dervaitis
Thank you for sharing! İ removed my hormonal İUD (3 yrs w/ it) today by a GP and it was no fun, slight discomfort, but quick. İ was deep breathing the whole time to relax my body from the pressure of the metal specula. Two reasons for removing the İUD early: conceive a baby this year & lose the water retention. Also, İ undetstand that it helps with my moodswings and brain fog.
Hello- Unfortunately I can’t give personalized medical advice over the internet. If you are having irregular or no period more than 1-2 months after hormonal IUD removal, I’d recommend that you see your doctor for further evaluation. -Dr. Dervaitis
Has anyone had a positive experience trying to get pregnant after getting their IUD removed? I had mine removed yesterday and looking forward to conceiving☺
Currently TTC after iud removal I had mines for five years been 1month since first cycle was June 5th and it was like Mary came to see me herself lol. I’m currently 7Dpo with no bfp yet. Fingers crossed our first month TTC
Doctor, I have Mirena IUD - was inserted in July 2014. Technically expired last july. Walked into office to get it removed - they told me I was good for 2 more years. It is June and I am now getting multiple signs I am pregnant. Took a test with first morning pee, nothing happened for a while and when I checked back hours later faint positive sign. Next test was just a tinkle and it was negative. I haven’t missed my period officially but last months was late and very short. I never know if what I am feeling is really correct, but I don’t want to not trust my instincts and have a medical emergency.
Hi- Watch video #35 for information about extended use of Mirena- during the pandemic, guidelines have authorized extended use up to 7 years if it was inserted at age 25 or greater (although the exact chance of pregnancy in years 6 and 7 is not precisely known, the chance is still very very low). If you are worried about pregnancy, see your doctor (who will arrange a blood pregnancy test). At any time (in years 0-5 or 5-7) there is a small chance of pregnancy with the IUD. -Dr. Dervaitis
Hello- Sorry to hear about this persistent spotting you’ve had, I can appreciate that you must be frustrated!Unfortunately I can’t give personalized medical advice over the internet (and really there is no way for me to answer your question, no way to “predict” this). After your own doctor examines you (and rules out any other causes of the bleeding) they might be able to better answer your question. -Dr. Dervaitis
Thank you so much for this video. Im seeing a new gp this week as "meet and greet" to discuss getting my iud removed and new one put in. Ive been terrified that #1 removal will hurt as much as implantation and #2 ive been very worried that i will have to wait for another implanted. I have chronic illnesses auto immune disease and having the IUD has stabilized my symptoms - in that my symptoms arent the rollercoaster ride that comes with having menstral cycle!
Hi- I’d refer you back to the video for more information on this- I discuss what to expect with removal, and also the process of immediate insertion of a new IUD at time of removal. Thanks for watching! -Dr. Dervaitis
Omg thank you. I went through two syncopals (one with failed placement, one with actual) and I've been avoiding removing it on time because of how terrible it was.
My GP couldn't find my strings. My IUD is expired and they say it will take minimum 6 months for a gynecologist referral. My IUD is hurting me but they won't speed up a referral because it is still in place confirmed by ultrasound. I want it out so badly
Hi Dr Dervaitis. My skin has slowly gotten worse and worse since getting my Mirena IUD. I am wanting to get it out soon (and also because I will want to start trying to conceive in the next year). Can you speak to the timeline of skin clearing up after Mirena removal? I am also on spironolactone 50mg daily and hoping that will help mitigate some of the hormone flux/skin breakouts after removal.
Hello- Every patient is unique... just as it is difficult to predict which patients might experience acne with the levonorgestrel IUD, unfortunately there is no real way to predict the timeline for improvement after removal. -Dr. Dervaitis
Thank you for such informative videos. It is very generous of you to put such quality information out there in the public domain. I am wondering whether you could do a video explaining some of the complications or symptoms which might arise from a longer-more complicated, in-office, removal-like the one I had? (My Merina was sideways, causing a lot of pain, and it complicated the removal process quite a bit. It took about 30 minutes). After a long removal, is it normal to have delayed onset cervix pain? Are these just normal cramps you might expect after ? Is there a cluster of symptoms women like me should expect, or monitor after a complicated, in-office, removal? Thanks.
Hello- I’m glad you have found the videos helpful. I’m sorry to hear about your personal experience, which is not common and beyond the scope of this channel. Since this channel is not intended to provide personalized medical advice, I’d recommend that you discuss this further with your doctor. All the best, Dr. Dervaitis
I was able to successfully self-remove my copper IUD. As I initially pulled the string, there was a sharp cramp feeling which made me stop. About an hour later, I attempted again. I began pulling the string again. No cramp feeling. Slowly pulled with light force and it came out. I did notice one of the T wings was bendy. It was able to bend up so I was glad I took it out when I did because it could have eventually broken off in my uterus.
It’s normal for the “t-wings” to bend (it is part of the design- the arms of the T need to be flexible so that they can be slid into the insertion tube and then be inserted into the uterus where they then return to their original shape/ position). It does not indicate that the arms would have broken off in the uterus. -Dr. Dervaitis
My iud strings have gone like Fallon out but the iud is still inside my uterus I have to get an D&C tomorrow to remove it at a specialist clinic this is my worst nightmare it was only placed 3 weeks ago and I was not told this could happen I’ve been a wreck all day
I got my Paragard removed, last month. I am 10 days late. I took a pregnancy test which showed negative. Is it normal to skip a period after removing a ( hormone free) iud?
I wish someone would have answered! I'm 7 days late. Same issues! Not pregnant and worried about when it will come back. What happened to you? I'm confused because I thought being non hormonal it wouldn't effect 😅
I have had a mirena since march 2016 (it is now September 2022); I tried getting it removed last year at a planned parenthood by the NP and she couldn't do it for some reason. I called again a few months ago and they suggested an ultrasound removal. I havent been able to do that right now since it is a lot more money and now I am so stressed out that I think it is making me really sick mentally and physically. I wish there was a way I could remove it myself.
Hello- Most IUD’s are good for 5 years, some up to 10 years. It is likely that your IUD is no longer functioning. I’d recommend that you see your doctor to discuss removal/replacement. If you are not planning to be pregnant (and are not yet in menopause) I’d recommend that you use back up contraception in the interim. -Dr. Dervaitis
Had mine removed today and the arm of the paraguard broke. Sonogram shows its stuck in the uterus. Doc thinks its stuck in the muscle. Now im scared. 😭
Hi thank you so much for the video I got my iud removed today from lisoning to your video I'll start my period next month? I'm scared bc I'm on seizure meds and just want to make sure thank u so much
I had a mirena removal about a week ago and have been experiencing extreme nausea, depression, and anxiety (normally I don´t). It´s getting a little better everyday, but still quite difficult to handle. Do you have a recommendation on how to regulate my hormones?
Hi Val I’ve had mine for almost 10 years. Since I’ve had the mirena I’ve experienced mild to severe dizziness, anxiety, and now confirmed heart arrhythmia. I originally got the mirena for severe pain from adenomyosis. The adenomyosis was severe enough to deal with the side effects of the mirena all these years. But I think I’m ready to have it removed as the side effects are becoming too great. I’m very nervous of the hormonal imbalance after removal. Are you better now or still struggling?
I got a IUD placed a couple of months ago and have experienced a lot of fatigue and dizziness since I have had it placed. My periods have been really heavy and polonged.
Hi Eliza- Sorry to hear this. It’s not typical to have dizziness and fatigue after an IUD placement, but if there has been significant blood loss, these can be symptoms of anemia. I’d recommend that you see your doctor for a check-up, he/she may want to check your blood iron levels and do a complete blood count. -Dr. Dervaitis
I been on an i.u.d twice both have made me bleed excessively I'm so sick of it the copper one was coming out my cervix. So I removed it and got the mirena and now I'm still bleeding and spotting all the time! COVID did effect my periods for worse too. So I'm getting it removed and getting the Nuva ring.
Lauren Walker hey girl I just got mine out 5 minutes ago. You’re going to be okay. I was scared and sweating- didn’t feel it. The doctor said removal is never a problem. The only thing I felt was the speculum. You got this!
