Hello Bone Builders. Over on the Bone Builders Facebook group, there has been some questions about whether yoga can help with osteoporosis or osteopenia. The answer is that it can if done a certain way.
This video will show you the standing poses of 12 poses that have shown to improve osteoporosis and how you can adapt some of them. Part two, where I show the remaining poses will be out shortly.

Thank you! I was always told that twisting was never a good idea for Osteoporosis. This is enlightening.

Carin, twisting is something that the world of osteoporosis should be talking about... When someone goes to a physical therapist after a fracture they are taught to use the golfer pick up to keep their back safe and it is a twist. In general with twists, go slowly and make sure that you can still comfortably breathe. There may be reasons such as surgery on your back or scoliosis that change whether or not they are appropriate for someone's individual situation. It is interesting to look at medical studies like this one and to realize that there are things we can and should be doing.

I’ve been practicing these but this is the best demonstration and explanation I’ve seen. And I love your yoga mat! Can you share where you found it?

Just came across this and enjoyed it. I have L4-L5 disc bulge and hip arthritis. What modifications to the poses would you recommend. Thank you

This is going to be a really personal thing. Without seeing you it is hard for me to say for sure, but I will share with you how I would approach this. Buldging discs can be quite painful. Small backbends like the ones int Dr. Fishman's 12 poses should actually be good for a bulging disc as well as osteopororis. That said coming back to arthritis- I have arthritis myself, and I start out practicing moving slowly because of the stiffness. I would encourage you to try out any pose you want, but your stance may be not as wide. Listen to your body and only go as far as it feels right in your body. I find that I can move better with my arthritis after I do yoga, but there are days when I move a whole lot better than other days... go at the pace that is right for you. Dr. Fishman's work does not differentiate between different adaptations in its effectiveness for improving bone health. Any of the variations will be helpful. On tree pose can you do it without putting your foot on your leg. Just lifting it high. Will that give you the same benefit

Absolutely! Any time you lift one foot off the ground you load weight into your standing leg hip. You do not have to make it an official tree🌲 Make it work in your body❤

In the triangle pose is the back foot straight or at a slight inward angle ?? Thank you

From a traditional yoga perspective the back foot would be straight, but stability is important and I would encourage you to place your back foot where it feels the most stable💗
