Thank your for this video. I use to love yoga but after my osteoporosis diagnosis my endocrinologist said I should avoid twisting. I now have scoliosis in my lover back and the stretches would feel so good. Should I skip the sitting twist? My Physical therapist had me doing some variation of some of your stretches. I’m just not sure if the twists are okay.

Hi Lynn! Thanks so much for your question. Yes! You can do the pose either in a chair to allow for more space, or if being on the floor is accessible to you and it's the rotation that is troublesome, you can also just hold your knee with the opposite hand and rotate your chest toward that knee. Is that helpful? Let me know if you need more of a description or if there is another part of the pose that is challenging.

The blocks are helpful to 'bring the floor up to your hands' so that you're not over-straining or pulling through your spine to reach the floor. If you can comfortably touch the floor without bending through the spine, you can likely try it without the blocks!

Great question, I find the yoga block can be helpful to 'bring the floor up to you' and let you go deeper into a pose regardless of flexibility level. If your body allows you to reach the floor without curving or arching your back, go for it! Otherwise, the block can be a very nice addition.

When I do tree pose my ankle (both sides) wobbles a lot! What can I do to improve my ankle strength and therefore improve my balance?
@KendraFitzgerald
@KendraFitzgerald 2 года назад
Great question Alice! Start with the toes of your floating foot on the floor (foot on the ankle) to give yourself some extra stability to begin. Then, when you're balancing, think of your foot as a straw and you're sucking a smoothie through your arch while spreading out your toes. See if that helps! You can also move the the wall and put one finger on the wall to help with balance in the beginning. Even that small surface area of touch can be incredibly grounding. I'm so thrilled you find my videos helpful Amanda! One thing with tight hamstrings that feel like they can never be stretched enough - sometimes it's actually the position of the pelvis that creates the tightness. If your pelvis is really pitched forward, it can put the hamstrings under a lot of tension. Obviously I can't give exact details on your situation without seeing you move, but I'd be curious to know what you feel if you go into a hamstring stretch and tuck and untuck your tailbone...?

I have osteoporosis but can do most of the classic poses . Is that ok? I really think the chair poses are too easy.
@KendraFitzgerald

Hi Joan, as long as your Doctor has given you the OK, go for it! The classic poses can be perfectly safe if you have the flexibility for them without the chair.

Dear Kendra,do we have to use the blocks?
@KendraFitzgerald

Hi Antonella, you don't! They are there in case you need to bring the floor up to your hands or create more space in your side waist. If you have the flexibility, go for it without the blocks for sure!

Please do a new video of Dr Fishmans version for Osteoporosis which I think he uses a chair. The one you did in 2017 is poor quality and difficult to hear through the buzzing. Thank you

Hi, thank you so much for this helpful video. I have taken a gentle yoga class for seniors for several years but was recently diagnosed with osteoporosis and need to step up my game! I find your portrayal of Dr Fishman's 12 poses very useful but you move through them very quickly, almost too fast for this senior citizen. Most people with osteoporosis are in my age range or older, maybe next time you could slow things down a little? Also, your use of mirroring is confusing to me. Your verbal cues are the opposite of what I see you actually doing. Maybe it bothers me more because I am taking your instruction "virtually" and not in-person. At any rate, I often find myself wondering which side I should be on, the one you are demonstrating or the one you are verbalizing. Anyway, thanks again!
@KendraFitzgerald
@KendraFitzgerald 2 года назад
Thank you Kathy! Yes, there are many ways for the verbal cues to go. :) I recommend following whichever is easier for you - I find that visual learners like to follow the video, while auditory learners like to follow the verbal cues. And I'll keep this in mind for future videos! Also with regards to the speed, you can actually slow down the video in the 'settings' of the video - you can listen to it at .75 speed or even .5 speed. My voice might sound funny but you might be able to follow along better. :) Thank you for practicing with me!

I just tried these and got discouraged because when I looked at the instructor it was backward to the actual instructions and then confusing. Kinda frustrating. Why would someone do that?!

If you slow the playback speed quite a bit, you can compensate for any audio issues by turning on closed captions. The controls for playback speed and captions differ depending upon how you’re viewing YT. In the iOS app, which I use, they are accessed by clicking on 3 vertical dots at the upper eight of the screen. If viewing YT via a browser, I think you click on something below the screen. Hope this helps.

I totally understand the confusion, when I filmed this I did not do 'mirror image'so it is backwards. If you'd like to try another video that is correct, you can check that one out here! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FE_W6jMsnPY.html

@KendraFitzgerald
@KendraFitzgerald 2 года назад
Great question! You can absolutely do this without the block, but as a beginner it may be helpful to have. Essentially, a block brings the floor up to you. You can also use a stack of books or a shoebox to replace the block!

Hi Kendra, Thanks so much for these videos for osteopenia/porosis. I've been doing yoga for years, but I developed a nagging back pain several months ago that you've helped me get rid of. The first video I found by you was this one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NRNn-EkrMas.html and I'm curious why your Osteopenia-focused version seems to be more remedial than this earlier one you did for Osteoporosis. Was there some new research in the meantime? Regardless, great videos!

I'm so happy to hear that your back pain has disappeared! Love to hear that. And thank you for the question! The variations in the two practices were based on Dr. Fishman's research, with just minor changes in the poses. Both practices are still great to do!
