This is part 1 of 2 for this 12000rpm ebay tacho. Its a good tacho but typically it comes without a wiring diagram or instructions,. Hopefully this will make its installation much easier for others. Enjoy!

I was thinking about buying one of these but all the reviews were POOR, mostly because of missing or inaccurate wiring instructions. This video is the reason I bought it. Can't wait for your set-up video, but I feel fairly confident about that. I did see from one of your other videos that if you have a single cylinder, you should leave that setting alone. I have a single, so thanks for that. Also, have you had it out in the rain? I saw a video where someone had fog inside the unit. I'll probably make a breathable cover. THANKS for this video!

Hi there and thanks for great videos. I'm halfway through installing it on my Ural and have found it so far to be quite straightforward, but only because of your instructions! I have a couple of (hopefully) helpful comments... The yellow/black wire I connected to one of the primary wires going to the coil, rather than wrapping it around the ignition lead. The red lead should be straight to the battery, so always powered. The black wire should go to a switched power source, and I used the wire that powered the backlights of my previous speedo. It's a common problem people have with this speedo that they only wire the black to constant 12V, so it's always turned on. I don't have a fuel sensor, so to stop the fuel gauge from flashing I had to put a 330 Ohm, 1 Watt resistor onto the blue/white wire before connecting it to ground. It reads half full, but that's better than flashing. Connecting it straight to ground kept it flashing for me. I only had one flasher light on my dash, so took leads off the wiring that went to the handlebar switch. My first power on.... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0nfwcrq8vK4.html

Oh the disappointment! Any help appreciated. I’ve installed it, wired it up and started the engine. The tachometer needle comes up to about a thousand, but when I rev the engine, the needle goes to zero and stays there. When the goes back to idle the needles comes back up. Any ideas?

Hmmm, have you got Mode 3 set to the number cylinders you have? And how have you connected the signal wire? You need to connect the signal wire from the pick up sensor for the coil, this should be in the end of the crankshaft. Or from the CDI unit input which again should have one trigger signal from the crank. I doubt it will work when connected direct to the coil

@@Mezzmoengineering I took the wire going to the coil from the EFI unit based on other people's advice. The wiring diagram can be found here static1.squarespace.com/static/58c1ef5abf629ab8bade3657/t/58c8261fcd0f68b0e77db815/1489511969048/2016-2014+Wiring+Diagram.pdf I picked one of the wired going from the EFI to coil 2, coming from G2 or H1 on the EFI. I guess you're suggesting taking it off one of the wires that leads to A4 or B4?

Hi Tin. I have same problem that you had: I try connect this speedo to power supply + and -, then RPM hand moving slowly and no light. Do you solved this ? Give me some advice if you can please.

Hello sir, Thank you for the video, you definitely helped me understand how to wire the tach! Luckily I got one with the same wire colours as you and pretty much everything works now except for the Neutral light that seems to be burnt out but I will hook that up to the running lights indicator. However I cannot get the tachometer to work, I have a 1989 Honda CBR600 and I hooked it up to the Blue wire of the Pulse Generator but no sign of movement from the tach. Would you be able to help me out?

Hi great vid. I've got the speedo rigged up all good, speed reads fine up to 30mph then it goes haywire after that jumping up to 70 when I'm at 40 and gets worse the faster I go any ideas cheers Alex

Thanks for the Video, I purchased this speedo for my 2006 V Star 250, Took the old Speedo off and found a mess of wiring that the previous owner has installed ( Im Assuming to add the ape hangers ) so hopefully I can work out which wire is for what so I can wire this in lol

Great work. Huge thanks for helping everyone out.Before I purchase this gauge, I have to ask...do you think this will hold up on a dual sport bike that is subject to a lot of vibration and banging around?

Hi, I don't really know. At the end of the day its a good tacho but it isn't a super robust build. Could be ok, given the price you don't have much to lose.

Regarding the red wire (constant power). You mentioned it will cause the needle to get stuck. Will it also cause the speed to not function correctly? Mine sometimes works and other times, the needle will get stuck. The fuel and mph doesn't display. The lights displayed on the speedometer still work properly though (Neutral, turn signals, etc)

I'm not certain what will happen with the speed, its best to make sure it has power. The fuel will not work unless connected to a level float that is set to the correct resistance

Hi there Is the red permanent power supply from battery or from ignition? Also, is the black from ignition or once the bike has started?

Another question. Did you physical solder the black and yellow wire to the pick up post or merge it with a different wire outside the engine.

You could solder directly to the pick up post however I'd recommend merging to the same cable but a little away from the post itself.

Probably my last question since I've gotten everything thanks to you. If your bike doesn't have an already made gear indicator on it, how do you wire the gear wires?

The gear indicators in the tacho work when each cable is earthed. Eg if you earth the first gear cable from the tacho it will show "1" for that gear and so on. So all you need to do is connect the gear indicator cables from your engine to the tacho. If you dont have gear wires from your engine then it can only work if you figure out a way to provide an earth signal for each gear you are using. If you leave them disconnected then it will just be blank and not show anything on the tacho

mine doesnt have a gear indicator but it being a suzuki gs500 i got a suzuki 150 gear indicator which has all the nessassary prongs i have yet to wire up mine so i will be learning if got everything right :P

Those 3 are on the separate 3 pin plug and are for the sensor for the speed. This just plugs in....

My old speedo has just one connection for both right and left indicator as it had just one indication light on speedo for both .How can i wire up with this speedo so that this new speedo lights up both right and left indications separately ?

Maddy, you just use the two separate signal wires to your blinkers. Eg left blinker signal goes to speedo and right blinker wire is separate to give both left and right signals.

Just ordered a speedo like this and researching it all to be ready when it shows up. I think I got it all figured out but the fuel sender. I putting this in a buggy with a 2 or 3 gallon tank and wondering what sender are you using? All the ones I keep finding look like they are way too big to fit in my tank but yours looks small enough to work.

I used a sender from a small fuel tank I originally bought on eBay. From memory the tank was a 5 litre with a sender that was easy to remove

As I say in the video, the black cable is power. Normally from the ignition so its only on when the engine is running.

I used a fuel sensor from an alloy tank I bought from ebay. There are a couple of settings you can use to match various resistance of the sensors.

Hey, thanks for such a great video but I do have one question about it. In the Video, when you talk about the first 3 wires, would the black be the Ignition since the red is running power? I'm wiring up a 2005 Kawasaki Z750s and I think that is the last part I need before I can dive in.

I'm not certain as I got it to work without too much trouble and at a point where I didn't need to know exactly the voltage, my guess its looking for a 12 volt signal but someone else might be able to confirm...

Hi, just need a confirmation. So basically on the diagram, the black/yellow wire which says speed signal wire will be directly connected on those pick-up post. I have the same diagram on your link but my wiring has different colors. I'm having trouble which is for the tacho.

That is strange, why do you think the tacho wire is a different colour. Maybe connect all other wires so in the end the last wire will be for the tacho. Does your speedo have a black/yellow cable?

If you mean the total distance traveled then it can't be set as its starts at zero. I think in ode 5 you can remove distance though if you are transferring to another bike etc

This video helped me a lot, thanks for that. On my cb360 the Tacho won't receive the RPM signal. When I use test light I can see the light pulsing so I know I have the correct signal wire. This two cylinder bike has two coils and I have the tacho set on 2, for two cylinders but it doesn't read. Is there wasted spark on this bike and should I have left it set on 1 ? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Hi, I'm' not familiar with your engine but sounds like it is not wasted spark. Wasted spark is when the coil has two output cables. Either way if its wasted spark it will still work but the RPM reading with be either more or less than what it should be. You need to get a pulse with the correct voltage. Is the signal wire from the pick up points or from the coil itself. Mine works from the pick up points and not from the coil.

The signal is from the red wire of a PAMCO electronic ignition wher I get signal with my 12v tester.

I connected the black power switch cable to my ignition but the problem is my speedo stays on the entire time, even when the bike is off. Any suggestions that could help me?

Hi, red goes to battery so there's power all the time and black is only when ignition is on

Like everyone else, I found your video when researching this gauge. I've gotten everything to work except for the same things everyone else is having trouble with. My 84 Magna does not use a fuel float so I need to ground that, unless you have ideas on how to make the low fuel thermistor sensor work? Also, the bike doesn't have a gear sensor, but it did use an overdrive light to indicate "6th" gear. Due to how this gauge is set up, I can't seem to make it work.

If you want fuel its easiest to install a float into the tank like I did to provide the signal. Gear signals are just when the appropriate gear is earth on the gauge. Eg, Earthing a gear cable will make the tacho show that gear, hope that makes sense.

Hello and thanks for all you do. I still have a problem with the RPM. I have a BMW K75 and tried different things but nothing work. I tried the four wire come from the hall effect sensor (black, red, orange and brown) but nothing.Do you already heard something about this problem ? Thanks again

Hi, I'm not familiar with your engine. You should check your wiring diagram to see where the sensor wires go, one of those cables should work. This is a challenge for lots of people. Someone else may be able to advise for your particular engine. Its also possible you may have damaged the tacho is your have put power on the wrong spot but if you power the tacho and it does the sweep then it should be good.

If you have a two-stroke engine, do you have to set it to 2 cylinders because it ignites every rotation? My 50cc ATV is showing me around 1800RPM in Idle with the default settings

Good question, it depends. Usually 4 stroke engines run wasted spark meaning that it sparks on both inlet and exhaust cycles, so once every rev just like a 2 stroke. If you have 1 cylinder I would pick 1 cylinder. To be certain you could buy a cheap rpm meter from eBay to check, cost of this is only about $10. Remember once you select something other than 1 cylinder in the mode setting you can't go back to 1 again....It is double what it should be then you spark set up might mean it needs to be set to 2. For my engine, I set to 2 even though I have a 4 cylinder because my coils are dual and fire 2 cylinders at the same time. Hope this makes sense

Thanks! Can you also use the Speedo with contact breaker ignition systems (hope this is the correct spelling in english) or is the voltage to high? There is just one cable that goes directly from the capacitor to the ignition coil

Yes, you connect to the signal from the contacts which is not high current, Don't connect to the positive of the coil. You should have a cable going from the contacts to provide signal for the coil/s. That should work.

The problem is that my contact ignition system of a Hercules Prima GT ( A German "Mofa") has only one cable which goes directly from the capacitor to the coil, so I don't have a signal cable that goes to a CDI or something else. The coil is directly grounded to the frame. Can i also use the signal from the positive light cable which goes to the stock rev counter or just pick up the signal from the ground of the coil?

Hi, I don't know for sure but if it was me I'd try using the cable going to the coil. You don't have much choice, just try quickly to see if it works.

Hi my bike revs up to 12,500 rpm can I still use this tach or will the needle get damaged if my bike reclines. Its a 2007 ninja 250 or ex250

Hi, I think at 12,500rpm you have more chance of hurting yourself before this speedo. If you need more rpm you're probably better off buying a more expensive tacho

FUEL GAUGE Some of the posts on this and other videos state that grounding the fuel gauge wire (blue and white) will cause the fuel gauge to stop flashing. With my ones (3 of them) this was not the case. I have found that you need to ground it via a resistance of between 30 to 500 ohm. Anything more or less wont have any effect. 500ohm displays 1 bar (of 8) i.e. almost empty. 30ohm displays 8 bars (full). (about 330ohm is half full etc.) So if grounding the fuel wire doesn't work for you, try grounding it through a resistor between 30 and 500 ohms.

The pulse generator usually already has a wire coming off it... Can you just use that for the tach? If so... Isn't it pretty obvious to use that for the tach signal since thats what the OEM gauge uses?

HI there. I followed your instructions and everything works like a charm but I have an issue. when I have the battery on the tach it gets stuck at 4000 rpm. when I REMOVE the battery ENTIRELY off of the bike everything works as expected. I'm getting my signal from my pick up coil negative . The bike is a 1984 (OR 1985) YAMAHA XT 250 CDI ignition triple coil (charge,lights & pickup coil)

Hi, not 100% sure what you mean. So when you remove the permanent battery supply to the tacho it works? Or you leave it wire as per my instructions and it suddenly works when you remove your bike battery? If you don;t have power all the time when you turn the bike off the tacho can get stuck on whatever RPM the engine was doing when power was turned off.

Thank you for your kind reply. I figured it out at last (over-voltage at higher rpm). No that was not the problem. the needle got stuck at 4000rpm while the engine was running at 4000+ rpm. i have every wire connected as you mention in your video. when i remove the battery itself the problem disappears . The fix is a low pass filter (passive) made from a 10uf electrolytic capacitor and a resistor connected to the signal wire before it gets to the tachometer. Also i took my signal from the rectifier this time (i think from the lead that connects to the lighting coil the yellow/red wire) Thank you again, You're awesome!

Just connected the gas wire to the ground and it stop the blinking. Great video and instruction.

Great video bud! I have everything working perfectly, besides the tachometer. /sigh. The bike is a 2012 Harley iron 883 sportster. I tried hooking the yellow and black wire to the coil with a resistor. No luck. Also tried hooking it to the crank position sensor. Also no luck. Any ideas? Thank you so much!

I'm not familiar with your bike. Check the wiring from the crank sensor as it should go to a control box, not sure how many cables but I'm guessing 4 to 6. If there is one, try each terminal quickly to see if it works. I would avoid connecting directly to the coil as I've heard others have done that and damaged the tacho

Classic Celicas and more thank you so much for the response bro! After studying wiring diagrams online I found the crank position sensor goes strait to the ecm. If I splice to be crank position sensor ground the tachometer will work but it’s all over the place. Do you think it possible to splice into one of the fuel injectors?

Sounds like you have picked the wrong wire from the crank sensor. I don't think the injector signal will work but might be worth a try. I'd be looking closer at the crank signal wiring and pick a cable going from the sensor to the ECU rather than a cable thats a signal out from the ECU

OK, have you tried both those cables? If neither work it could be sending out a signal voltage different to what the tacho needs

Mine lights up but shows no data, just a blank backlight, and no neutral light. The high bean light and indicators work, but I can not get the settings function up despite trying all the methods shown on these vids. Ive double checked all the wirings. Does anyone know if there is a factory reset function on these things?

I don't think there is any factory reset. Does it do a sweep when you power it up? to get into settings you need to hold down the rear buttons, start pressing the button from before you turn power on, pressing after the power is on and it won't work

Cheers. No, I did all the procedures shown on these vids. The clock lights up, including the bottom window, but shows no digits at all, and no neutral light, even though I tried the old wire to the old clock, which should in theory. work. I emailed the sender and they are going to send me a wiring instructions diagram, but I feel I have a bum unit. I'll let you know what happens. Cheers.

Mezzmo Engineering . I recently installed this speedo and i am having the same problem. Speedo lcd goes blank after some time while rpm , backlight , other lights keeps on working normally. Rebooting the speedo is the only solution i found so far. What would be the possible problem?

Great video but why do you say it can damange the tach if you connect it to the coil? Almost all tachometer manuals says you should connect it to the coil.

Because the input signal to this tacho needs a lower voltage. I think it will fail if you connect direct to the coil. Let me know if you get it to work that way

I think it's low voltage to the coils and high voltage is the cables out from the coil to the plugs but I don't know. I've seen others getting wrong readings from the coil. The spark generator cable seems to be better so I'll try to find it.

@@myshitonyoutube the RPM voltage signal is not the same for all tachos. Older style tachos generally went direct to the coil, others are lower voltage, just depends what you have.

Este video es la primera parte donde muestra la funciones de los cables. En la segunda parte del video es mas explícito el como y con que conectar cada cable. En este video al minuto 7:50 da el nombre de un usuario de RU-vid al cual la unidad le vino con el manual (el cual lo comparte) si quieres el manual ve al canal de max etienne y déjale tu correo junto con el texto (can I please get the manual, thanks) y el te lo envía.

I assume you mean "injection"? I don't know your engine exactly but typically injected engines still get a pulse signal that's generally around 5 volts. So yes you need to wire the same and select the correct cable for the pulse signal. Don't connect direct to the coils...

Classic Celicas and more Hello, I try to connect the yellow and black cable on the universal odometer, to the original sensor cable of my ducats, but it does not work. I do not know maybe something wrong or maybe I should fit it differently. I tried to mount it also to the positive of the coil but it still does not work.

Hi, connecting to the coil positive might have casued damage. Look for the ignitor unit on your motorbike, it will have wires coming from the sensors from the crankshaft end,one of these cables should connect to the black/yellow wire. Try each one, I'm guessing there will be about 4 wires coming from the pick up sensots

I now got it working and doing the sweep, etc. But the modes don't come up when Ido the on-off 5 secs? Just CCC 000, which I believe is trip milage set? And no mode number comes up. When I try to move on to the next mode, it trips out to begin again? Am I a dickhead or what?

haha, that doesn't sound right. Maybe the speedo has a fault. You press the rear button while the power is off, hold and then turn power on. To change modes you hold the button down for 3 secs once its in the set up mode. Check you have the memory power and main power connected correctly. Eg Memory power must be on all the time and the other power is only when the speedo is running

I figured it out by reading comments on other channels. It's an early or later model. The wiring into the clock is different and you must key in code 123 to get into settings, which are way different to yours. I've got everything working now except the wheel pulse signal, or the wire reading it? I suspect I've got a dud signal reader so have sent away for another, £6 and two weeks coming. On mine, the wire in is black n purple, but no joy. The signal from my HT coil and the + and - on my coil does not read, so I'm gonna wire it into the pulse gen like you advise. The Mickey Mouse instructions are a joke and reflect the Chinese thinking, but we haven't forgotten about Pearl Harbour ya Yella Communist Bastards.
