We had some good discussion on the channel recently about the differences between a front and a rear mount snowblower. So, our good friends Kevin and Dave, from Farmer Equipment Sales And Rentals, were kind enough to loan me a rear mount unit to learn how it works. Let's mount it up on the Kubota B2601 Compact Tractor and plow some snow! Cheers! #kubota #kubotab2601 #compacttractor

Finally you can answer the age old debate, front snow blower with back blade vs front loader and rear snow blower. Most people only have experience with one or the other mutually exclusive choices. looking forward to your next video!

Hey G.P., Another great video. I have a 2 stage walk behind snow blower that I use for walking paths and such. I have always wanted a tractor mounted snow blower but until I get the Curtis cab that Jon Ritter has, I will have to settle for my fel and my rear box blade. I went through a neighboring town some years ago and a man with a garden tractor was blowing snow with it. He was wearing a stocking cap and also wearing about 8 inches of snow stacked up on top or the cap yet. One of the funniest things I have seen in a long time. He must not have known how to turn the chute or at the very least how to use the wind to his advantage. Cheers G.P. Gary from Iowa

Hey great to hear from you Gary. Hope you are well. That cab Jon has sure looks inviting. That is pretty funny about the guy with the cap. I find that sometimes no matter which way I turn that chute, I still end up wearing it. LOL. I think you might see that on Wednesday's video. Be well and all the best Gary!

Great video GP. In my opinion, a rear blower with FEL is a good combo for short runs where you have to “stack or pile” snow. Constantly having to turn around is literally a pain in the neck. For longer runs like yours, I think you have the perfect combo of a front blower and rear blade. You really don’t have a need for the FEL to stack or pile snow. Have a great weekend!

It's really informative to see the various options for tractors. My property only has 100 yards or so of driveway but has a larger concrete pad around my pole barn which presents challenges for moving snow. I use my FEL and a Craftsman walk behind snow blower to get the job done. for the amount of snow we get it works good. Cheers

Good morning GR, I am enjoying the comparisons between the rear snow blower to the front mounted. If you have any physical disabilities from the waist up then there is only the front mount to be your choice. However if you have no disabilities then a rear mount would be great because then you could leave the front bucket on to be able to get rid of crusted piles of snow , snow drifts that have packed in and ballast too. As for me I would fall into the front mount category with fused neck, broken back, shoulders torn, elbow nerve damage and carpal tunnel again in both wrists but I'm better off than others and do what I can when I can. Doesn't stop me from dreaming and reliving either. I enjoy riding along, thanks for sharing.

Nice that Farmer Equipment Sales let you try out that rear blower . If I was in the market to buy a tractor or implements they would be my first choice in dealerships even though they are a few hours away from me . First time I've seen a tractor with a rear and front snow blower on LOL . Like other people have said with a short driveway no problem with a rear blower . Then you can have a snow pusher a blade or a bucket on the front using a quick disconnect . Some times there isn't enough snow to warrant the use of a blower . Great video .

Another great video GP. Welcome to the darkside. My rear blower gets the job done but it takes about 60 to 90 minutes to clear my driveway and i know that a front blower would be a much more comfortable option. For what its worth, for me, it came down to money. There is a premium for tractors with a mid mount PTO and there is a premium for the front blowers. I dont run any other attachments that would have used the mm and with the cost of the front blower, i just couldnt justify it for 3 months a year. I will add that on the rear blower i think the hydraulic chute rotation and deflector are a must. I cheaped out initially but i will definitely be installing rear remotes and hydros on the blower this spring. Thanks again for all your great videos. Cheers.

since your dealer is asking, here is my take on front vs rear snowblower mount first of all i choose a traditional farm tractor setup vs a skid steer for one major reason, 2 attachments vs one i am also a home owner and not a professional contractor my personal setup is a b2301 with a rear mounted 52" kubota pto snowblower and a front mounted angle blade that attaches to the stock bucket most preferable setup being a hydraulic angle blade on a quick attach just not the funds for it yet rear mounted PTO driven blowers are cheaper and more common plus easier resell because they can fit on most tractors, front mounted are very expensive and tractor specific closer to the pivot of the rear wheels makes for blowing corners and curvey driveways easier, front blowers are better for straight line cuts or much lighter snow i spend most of my time with the blade and less with the blower, i want to see my blade and i like being able to apply downforce to the blade and letting the blower float is fine because it ends up more of a clean up tool doing what the blade cant quite do i also can back drag safer, and what i mean by that is with a bucket when you backdrag you have to tilt your bucket forward exposing your tilt cylinders to potential damage by being over extended with a blade you keep your cylinders in an ideal position allowing you to backdrag with less possibility of damaging a over extended cylinder the 3 point hitch in the rear also has enough slop to let the blower float over angled terrain another added bonus is that retaining the front loader arms keeps a lot of versatility in the config, if i needed to load something heavy in the back of my truck, i dont need to do much more than warm my tractor up to get it done if i had his front blower config and needed to do this i would spend to much time changing a front end to hardly make it worth it
@GPOutdoors

Good morning MJ. Thanks for the detail above. I really appreciate how clear and articulate you are. Excellent points very well explained. Thanks for taking the time to outline the whole picture. I gave it a thumbs up so it will post at the very top of the comments for folks to read. I couldn't agree more with the practical application of it - for normal driveways and parking areas. As you have seen with mine, I would offer that in my case, although I didn't want to give up having my FEL, that driveway is not practically plowed as I have no shoulders to pile it. I do the opposite of your description for my application. Generally , I use the blower to clear and blade to clean up most of the time as you have seen. But if I had a shorter or more normal driveway situation, I would adopt your approach above hands down. Thanks again for taking the time to capture the outline above. It's good stuff. Cheers and all the best!

Great video GP. No doubt the rear machine is built pretty well. But I've got to join the camp of 'sore-neckers'. I can no longer spend long periods of time twisted around to see where I'm going. Maybe back when I was a youngster like you.... Actually I've spent countless hours running in reverse with the rear blade turned around backwards as well to kick the road edges as far off as possible. Fortunately for me its rare to get much more than 8 "- 10" in an entire season much less at the same time... so there's no chance of any type of blower for me. We did however get hit with 22" back in '82, then never again. As it stands, my preference would be for the front mount blower and in a Utopian world, my second new Kubota would be fitted with a front end loader AND a rear pto driven blower. Another matter of fact description of the machine and assessment of its capabilties. Ya done good sir. If I've not said it before, let me say it now...you have a beautiful place any time of year !!

I gotta say that’s the first time I’ve ever seen a tractor with a blower on the front and the rear at the same time. It’s actually pretty cool looking. Many moons ago we had a “Meteor” snowblower (built in Canada) for our BX. It worked great for us. I personally would rather have a rear mount just for the sake of having the loader with a blade in the front, but that’s more because of all the stopping and turning around I have to do. For what you have I think your setup works great. It does suck to crane your neck, though, lol! Pretty nice looking snowblower. It’ll be interesting to see it in action. Maybe you could make a video with the loader on the front and blower on the rear to try that kind of setup out. You never know, might really like it. Supposedly we’re supposed to get dumped on but I don’t think that’s the case. Did get a few inches of snow, though. Been freezing cold. Hope it lets up soon! Make sure to put all your gear on when you’re out playing! Better safe than sorry. Take care.

Good day Jackson! Some great thoughts in there. If the driveway wasn't so long I certainly would have considered the rear blower more but my back and neck would never be able to take a mile of driving backwards. I agree with you. Wish I had the FEL on all the time as there are other things I could be doing in the winter months but it is a bit of work in the cold to have to remove the entire front blower and put it back on and off. But hey, all good. We have been getting some bitter cold here the last few days again. But finally got the furnace and generator fixed. Whew!! Hope all is well with you and your family Jackson!

I have both a rear and a front blower on different tractors . I have the exact same set up as GP with same blower on front and rear blade on the B2650 Kubota . As far as durability goes the rear has it hands down . They are much more rugged and fewer moving parts which takes less power to run and far less maintenance . I have about 600 ft. of drive plus some parking areas to do and if I could only have one tractor it would be with a rear blower with a front end loader for my needs . All that being said I sure like using the front blower with the rear blade in most of my conditions . When things get really tough with big storms or I want to widen things a bit out comes the bigger tractor with the front end loader and rear blower as it will tackle anything . Will be interesting to see what you have to say GP , as always great video .

on my Kubota I have a front snow blade and rear snow blower which in combo works really well . if we get a small amount of wet snow I push with the blade , if we get a big dump I blow it first then clean up with the blade . with the snow blower you don't have high snow banks or encroaching snowbanks. hay Gary use the top link adjuster to angle the blower so the front blade cuts a deeper path but only after the rocks have gone. I hear you will be getting more cold soon. have fun .

I couldn't help but notice GP on this old video how you would just jam the PTO lever in the engaged position.... I myself just ease it in I realize it's hydraulic control but it's still easier on everything like the joints on the PTO shaft and gearbox on the attachments I just start spinning it very slowly once it's engage then throttle up.... But you're better than most I see have it at half throttle or more and jam it in the PTO position... I apologize just little pet peeves of mine. I'll be interested in your future discussion about the pros and cons of the rear mounted snowblower. From my perspective, it would seem that you'd end up the day with a stiff neck as you're twisted around in the seat of the tractor looking over your shoulder at least half of the time. This one will probably do better with a heavier snow and the lower level of the skip plates. Well, here's hoping you get about two feet of snow at one time, you're prepared for it now. Just so long as it stays up there in Ontario and doesn't come to Maryland. LOL Take care, thanks for sharing. - John

Good day Michael! I have to say it's not awkward, so to say, and for the area of the driveway I did , it was all good. No back or neck issues. But I am sure If I had to turn like that for long periods like my mile long driveway, I don't think my back would take it well. But definitely if I had a shorter or normal driveway. I would have considered the rear mount. Far cheaper than the cost of my front mount plus I could keep my FEL on the tractor. Thanks Michael. Have a good weekend!

Hi Tom. I was fine actually as I only did the parking area and that entrance driveway from the forest. I think if I tried to do the whole driveway it would not be good - my back or my neck. GP. I used a rear blower for a lot of years but when I got into the snow blowing business I found the long runs are no fun with the rear blower. I don't have any disabilities except for my old age and I'm getting too old to turn around for 30 minutes at a stretch. You might find the same doing your long driveway. Now all you need is a cab!

This was a good video I have seen a rear snowblower being used before so it was definitely interesting. Would it be better to use a front snowblower instead of a rear snowblower to save time and make easier? It seems with the rear snowblower it takes longer because you keep having to reposition the snowblower in small spaces like a drive way and take you more time compared to a front snowblower. That is something that I noticed watching the video
@GPOutdoors
@GPOutdoors 5 лет назад
Hey good evening James. Thanks for the thoughts. They both have their benefits - I think that depending on the type or length of driveway would maybe help decide which would be better for someone. The front blower costs considerably more than a rear too so that would work into the decision too. For me with such a long driveway I would need the front blower but if I had a normal or regular driveway, I would be more inclined to have a rear. I will be doing a few more videos over the next while on it. Thanks again and have a great week!

Front loader with quick connect attachment tool and rear snowblower best of two worlds. We had a 3/4 mile driveway at our farm growing up and did all our relatives and friends driveways and church parking lot in town, Had no problem putting up with rear blower and we got more snow here in Eastern Ontario in some winters than most people have in a lifetime. I can remember back in the early 70,s having a snow storm where we had a twelve foot drift down across our front yard going up over the roof of our two story chicken house. We worked for hours getting dug out so we could open the second story door of the chicken house to be able to get I in to feed them in the morning. It was not uncommon to have four feet plus snow drifts in our lane way to town. And I can say that these were the good old days down on the farm. Neighbors helped each other to get snow cleaned out after a major storm!!

Tom. Loved the story. I was able to picture it as I was reading. I'll bet you have a few more too. Yes, I think in a lot of ways things have changed. That sense of community I had when I was a kid is not as prevalent as it used to be. Pretty fortunate up at the cabin to have a couple of great neighbours. I hope there was a hot chocolate or coffee waiting for you after that chicken house dig out. Have a wonderful weekend and thanks for sharing. Really enjoyed it Tom.

GP Outdoors My dad and uncle had one of the first front mount snowblowers I can remember. It was mounted on a IH 460 tractor. This would have been back in 1962. The 460 would have been around a 50 hp tractor and with the snow blower on the front traction was at a minimum. You almost had to follow it around with a second tractor and chain to pull it out when it would get stuck. 😂😂😂. Sure beat the alternative of shoveling snow. It been a lot of years since we had snowfalls like back then. I have looked high and low with extended family to see if anyone had a photo of the 460 with the blower mounted on it but no one ever seen one. It’s to bad because a lot of people I tell about it can,t fanthom that it was available back then.

I'll bet Tom. I didn't they they made them back then either. Glad you mentioned about the winter. Not sure what is going on here lately but the winters seem to be getting milder. I can remember shovelling snow piles 6 -8 feet high. I used to get 5 - 6 feet of snow here easily but not for the last few winters. I know what you mean about the weight on the front. I have to put a box blade or something really heavy on the back of mine to get up the big hill sometimes. or I drive up backwards to keep traction so I can imagine how much more unbalanced it would be back then. Thanks Tom! Would have loved seeing a picture of it too. Keep warm and be well!

A rear 3pt hitch pto snowblower is a good start to the world of tractor snow blowing. If you had to do a long driveway or very large area, you'd quickly feel it in your back from twisting around to see where you're going while driving in reverse. This is a good option for those that don't have a mid mount PTO option for their tractor to mount a snowblower on the front. You should see if the guys at Farmer Equipment Sales and Rentals have an inverted or pull type snowblower that fits on your rear 3 point hitch. Using one of those will allow you to drive forward while snow blowing and also not have to deal with a cloud of snow if the wind isn't in a favourable direction. This would be the next best option to a front mount snowblower, IMHO.

Good morning GP! Your dual snow blower setup reminds me of Dr Dolittle’s pushmepullyou! I don’t think I’d like having to operate it backward, but for folks with tractors that can’t be fitted with a front snowblower, it looks like a viable option. I’d probably have to take a muscle relaxer after doing much of that!

Hey good evening TPG. I imagine you guys must have been really crazy busy this last week or two. Thanks for the comment as always. Not enough snow to really challenge the blower. Did you say what the brand name was? Generally rear snowblowers are more heavy duty than front ones. I don’t think my neck would stand up to looking backwards that much which is the reason I wouldn’t get one. Thanks for the video Gord. Well made as always.

Hey thanks K! I actually never asked who makes the blower but I will. Agree with you on having to look backwards for long periods but would definitely do the trick on a regular length normal driveway I think. But for sure on mine, I needed the front mount. :) Have a great weekend!

Great vid GP. Who makes this blower. Lucknow(Helm welding), Meteor (MK Martin)or Pronovost? I see Farmer's on kijiji in the maritimes. The huge 3ph impeller( 540 rpm)should have more momentum than front mount(1500rpm) and probably needs less hp to size ratio to operate . It should probably be more durable ,because the components, bearings, etc. are only turning 1/3 the speed.imo. Not a big test but still interesting to see the differences. PS I got my front mount Kubota working well on the 3ph, but lack the hp, so i am presently rebuilding an actual 540 3ph , to see how my limited HP works on this one. Take care

LOL. Re: your comments about the rear - is that why it is so quiet and seems to rotate slower? I notice when pushing into snow , although only 8 - 10 inches. it never slows down whereas sometimes I can hear my front blower slow down ( RPMs slow down) but it didn't happen at all with the rear. Is that why?
@GPOutdoors
@GPOutdoors 5 лет назад
Oh and sorry, I actually never asked who makes it. I will ask this week.
@mrfixit603
@mrfixit603 5 лет назад
@@GPOutdoors The 3 ph does rotate slower. Almost 3 times slower. Once the big impeller gets going, it kind of acts as a flywheel and needs less hp to keep going. The powertrain is all mechanical , so not as much lost of HP. There is a limit ,but you will see the smallest machines with quite big 3 ph blowers. My 15 hp diesel has been blowing snow for 40 yrs ,1979. Just happens the guy sold the blower before i purchased the tractor, about 10 yrs ago. New technology with live pto and hydro make it a whole lot easier to operate today's tractors. Sort of like country mouse and city mouse. We'll see if they can take the work for 40 + a whole lot of years. lol Take care!!

Hi Gord, have you ever tried a rear mount inverted blower, it would be interesting to see how that performs on a longer laneway driving through snow before actually clearing it. It solves the problem of having to crane your neck but could be a challenge in deeper snow although a tractor on chains should be able to get through pretty much anything.
@GPOutdoors

Hey Thomas. Funny you mentioned this. I had to take a load of firewood up to my father in law's today and while driving through the country, I noticed a funny looking unit on the back of someone's tractor and sure enough, it was an inverted rear blower. It would be great to try one. I may ask Kevin or Dave the next time I talk with them to see if they sell or rent one. Thanks for the suggestion. Enjoy the weekend with your family!

I have never run a snow blower and I am not sure if I could justify getting one to use on our driveway as it is only about 230 yards long and I can handle it pretty well with the plow on my Polaris Ranger. I did just get a set of Edge Tamers for my FEL, so I am going to try that the next time we get a big snow here. Having said all that, I think my preference would be for a front mounted snow blower, as I would not like having to back up a whole lot. Also, I think it would be easier to use if your tractor had a cab (Which from the looks of it, would not be a bad idea for you!). If my Edge Tamers work out, I will be using my tractor more for clearing snow, so I can maybe see a soft cab in my future:)

The front blower runs off the mid PTO which has a higher RPM TNA the rear PTO, so you might expect to be able to get more power using the front mount.
