The Japanese advance in Burma and the Dutch East Indies, but they've reached the end of the Malayan Campaign- Singapore, which they have under siege. They now prepare for the final assault. The Allies are going on the offensive at sea, though, in the Marshalls-Gilberts Raids, while on land in the Soviet Union the Red Army launches another series of offensives against the Germans.

In a small way the U.S. did actually score a measure of revenge for the Pearl Harbor attacks back on December 22nd, though it wasn't known at the time. Captain Herbert C. Freuler and Lieutenant Carl R. Davidson had taken off from Wake Island in what was then last two remaining F4F Wildcats, recently patched up from previous air battles, intercepting a force of 33 B5N Kate bombers and 6 Zero fighters headed to bomb Wake as part of the Japanese invasion. Davidson was shot down and killed in the resulting dogfight but Freuler had managed to down two Japanese planes before his own plane had taken so much damage that he was forced to crash land on the beach. It was to be the last air battle for the pilots defending Wake Island, as they were now without any planes, and the remaining pilots reported for duty to fight as "infantrymen." Unbeknownst to Freuler one of the two planes he had shot down carried Noburu Kanai, the bombardier credited with striking the fatal blow to the USS Arizona on December 7th. Kanai was killed in action when his plane was shot down by Freuler.

Good anecdote at the end there using the golf course Indy. The fact that the high society elites of colonial Singapore were still dancing waltz at Raffles Hotel even when the Japanese are right at the doorsteps of Fortress Singapore pretty much reflected how the local civilians were either somewhat apathetic or disconnected and still confident that the British would still be able to beat the Japanese off the island at this late stage of the campaign.

That's basically the Red Army as a whole from 1939-42. It would take until late-1942 before the Red Army was able to, with the aid of ever-increasing material advantage in the face of an increasingly desperate German supply situation, plan and execute competent counter-offensives that had practical, realistic objectives. It would take a long time for the Soviet military (in particular it's officer corps) to recover from it's virtual gutting in the wake of Stalin's purges, not to mention his direct interference via Stavka.

Although relatively few lives (16 deaths and 1804 rescued) were lost, much vital supplies and military equipment were lost on the ship. Maybe this will be covered together in next week's episode, but on Feb 5 1942, the Japanese forces will launch a diversionary attack on Pulau Ubin on the northeast of Singapore. To give you some perspective, Pulau Ubin is a small island with a boat ride of about 15 mins away from modern day Changi Jetty at the Singapore mainland. I wonder if General Percival will take the bait and move his forces there to northeastern Punggol Beach or will he keep more forces at the northwestern Sarimbun Beach? Looks like we can only wait and see next week then...

Week after week, it's been really interesting to hear about how fluid the lines on the Eastern front are, especially when you see the strength of the units deployed. Really shows how distorted a picture you get when you just see an 'occupied' line across the continent. Seeing the context that there's gaps everywhere and sections dozens of kilometres long held by battalion strength units sheds a totally new light on the conflict.

The battle of Dakar (the failed anglo-Free French invasion of Senegal) was the first free French actions during the war along the battle of Gabon. 2.) The Bombing of Bangkok. When Thailand joined the war on Japan's side, the us rejected the thai declaration of war but did help undermine marshal phibun's regime with the Free thai movement as the British and the US did raid thailand. And finally 3). The channel dash raids in the english channel begin today. Love the channel and congrats on the engagement Indy!

You're the only person that's mentioned the Thailand bombing to me, interestingly enough. You'd think there'd be more. Glad you like the show- we need more history nerds.
