Fall Blau, the huge Axis summer offensive in the Soviet Union, is supposed to begin this week, but is postponed to next. The smaller Operation Fridericus II does begin though, and what dos Josef Stalin make of that and the intelligence he's received? Meanwhile in North Africa, after the fall of Tobruk, the British 8th Army gets a leadership change, but Erwin Rommel is still on the move eastward into Egypt. Where will the Allies try to hold him? Half the world away, the Allies begin to establish a base at Milne Bay, New Guinea. It's a start, a small one, but a start.

Tobruk has fallen, and the Axis are on the move in both North Africa and the Soviet Union. Judging from the past, that means a whole lot of prisoners of war will be taken. To learn more about their fate, and those of civilians in occupied territory around the world, check out our War Against Humanity subseries. You can find the playlist here: ru-vid.com/group/PLsIk0qF0R1j4cwI-ZuDoBLxVEV3egWKoM To see more about what civilians were doing at home, check out our On the Homefront playlist right here: ru-vid.com/group/PLsIk0qF0R1j5Ug9lCaxygenFf3lzuGXap And for day by day coverage of the war, go over to our Instagram or Facebook pages: instagram.com/ww2_day_by_day/ facebook.com/TimeGhostHistory

Bit of a off topic question. But I was wondering if you guys can start to cover the small arms of WW2 country by country like you did back on the Great War channel. I liked what you guys did there and what you have done so far with tanks with Chieftain. So I was hoping you guys would try to get some YT gun channel involved to cover the small arms of WW2. The small arms of WW2 are much more varied and interesting then the small arms of WW1. Such videos would cover the advantages and disadvantages the individual soldier of each nation would have, why each country went with the weapons they did, didn't bring in other classes of weapons and focused heavily on other classes of weapons. Because the guns countries in WW2 used were not basically copy pasted setups like WW1 was (that is a oversimplification by me of course). In addition to that I would also really like to see videos on the air-planes and navies each country was using in WW2 sort of like the video you posted yesterday on the bombers. Each countries air-force was also very different country to country and showing off the good and bad things each country did in their air-force would also be really cool I think. It would be harder to do for navies since the ships each country has were pretty similar nation to nation overall. So maybe just one video on the US, British and Japanese navies explaining their overall design and break-up into forces would be good on that front.

In his book SECRET WAR, about intelligence and espionage in WWII, Max Hastings makes the case that everyone, not just the Soviets, was pretty bad in the analysis of intelligence data, often just dismissing valuable information as "too good to be true". The British in particular were over-reliant on codebreaking, and assumed if Enigma didn't warn them about something, then there was no threat, which bit them on the ass several times.
@robertkras5162
@robertkras5162 3 года назад
I think Enigma was used pretty consistently - both in the atlantic and Africa and European land campaigns, even to some minor but key actions. To pass Enigma to the Soviets the British had concocted a non-existent humint network to feed the NKVD via Switzerland. Too be fair, there are ruses of false intel - notably the Allies had planted plans on a dead body that washed ashore in Spain with fake D-day plans, knowing they would find their way to the Abwehr. - and the whole dis-information campaign - but in those cases the Germans fell for it.
@stevekaczynski3793
@stevekaczynski3793 3 года назад
@@robertkras5162 There was for example a lack of Enigma info about the German build-up in the Ardennes in December 1944. The Germans passed messages over the phone but the Allies could not intercept it. As a security measure they did not use radio or Enigma. There was some human intelligence about the German build-up - Belgian civilians crossed the lines and mentioned German activity, as did one or two Poles who deserted from the German armed forces. But they were ignored.
@thunderbird1921
@thunderbird1921 2 года назад
There's definitely some truth to that, and it helps explain the bloodbath the Germans were able to inflict on the Allies in France and Italy in the second half of 1944. Of course, it didn't help that our commanders made some really risky or idiotic moves (such as Montgomery with Market Garden, and Bradley attacking at Hurtgen).

Especially in the summer, which is where we are in the timeline of 1942. Italian tank crews often wore a three-quarter length leather overcoat. I would have thought heat exhaustion wearing that was a risk, especially in a tank in the summer. The temperature often sharply dropped at night in the desert. Quite a few troops moved around in the morning and in the evening and tried to remain motionless during the bulk of the day when heat and sun were at their worst.

There will be four this year, though like Stalingrad the fourth extends into 1943. The Guadalcanal campaign starts in August. If Midway was Imperial Japan's Stalingrad, the Guadalcanal campaign was it's Kursk. It's during the Guadalcanal campaign that still very formidable Japanese naval air arm is bled white (U.S. pilot losses are also very high, but for various reasons the U.S. was better able to replace them) and the many naval battles in the Solomons would by the end decisively shift the advantage at sea to the United States.

RAF Bomber Command Weekly Report - June 20th to 27th Night of June 20th/21st: -Emden is the target for the second night in a row, as the weather was expected to be better this night -185 aircraft dispatched, 15 aircraft are designated as flare droppers using Gee (radio navigation) fixes to release flares. Initial flares are accurate and light up the shipyards, but later flares are dropped a few miles to the south. 47 bombers obtain bombing photos with ground detail: 4 show the docks of Emden, 10 are plotted to within five miles, and most of the rest are 10-15 miles to the West and South west. Emden reports 100 houses damaged and 1 person injured. -7 bombers (3.8%) are lost. 1 is shot down by flak, 6 are shot down by night fighters. Leading Nachtjagd ace Helmut Lent shoots down a Hampden of 420 "Snowy Owl" Squadron, RCAF, for his 43rd victory. Nachtjagd ace Egmont Prinz zur Lippe-Weissenfeld shoots down three bombers for his 25th though 27th victories. Night of June 22nd/23rd: -Emden is the target for the third time in a row, as it is expected weather will again be favorable. -227 aircraft dispatched, 15 aircraft are designated as flare droppers using Gee (radio navigation) fixes to release flares. Flares were fairly accurate, and crews claim they were very helpful in illuminating the target. 90 aircraft took photos that could be plotted: 50 were plotted within 5 miles of the aiming point, and 11 show the target. However, German decoy fires drew away part of the force, with a number of the photos taken within 5 miles showing open country, and 15 photos showing the Larrelt and Wybelsum decoys. Emden reports 50 houses destroyed, 100 damaged, and damage to the harbour. 6 are killed and 40 injured. -6 bombers (2.6%) are lost. 3 are shot down by flak, and 3 are shot down by night fighters. Nachtjadg ace Rudolf Schoenert shoots down two for his 19th and 20th victories. Night of June 25th/26th: -The final "Thousand Bomber Raid" launched by Bomber Command in 1942 - target is the city of Bremen. -1067 aircraft dispatched, split into 3 waves: 1st wave - Gee equipped aircraft aiming for the center of Bremen 2nd wave - non-Gee Wellington bombers, OTU, Costal Command aircraft targeting docks, Focke-Wulf aircraft works, and town 3rd wave - remaing Stirlings and Halifaxes targeting city and docks -Despite predictions of clear skies, Bremen is entirely cloud covered as expected winds did not disperse the clouds. The Raid is however moderately successful as the Gee equipped bombers start fires whose glow the following bombers bomb on. 527 houses are destroyed and 6108 are damaged. Damaged was inflicted on 4 important industrial firms, some damage is done to dock facilities, the Focke-Wulf aircraft works escapes serious damage. 85 people die and 497 are injured. -55 bombers (4.9%) are lost. Flak is credited with 17 kills, while the night fighters claim 37. Several Nachtjagd pilots claim 2 kills each, including Helmut Lent with his 46th and 47th victories, and Priz Zur Lippe-Weissenfeld with his 28th and 29th victories. Mine laying and Leaflets: Nights of June 20th/21st, 21st/22nd, 22nd/23rd, 23rd/24th, 24th/25th, 26th/27th - 180 sorties, 3 losses (1.6%) Sources: The Bomber Command War Diaries by Martin Middlebrook and Chris Everitt Nachtjagd Combat Archives: 30 May - 31 December 1942 by Theo Boiten RAF night bombing reports

@greg_mca
@greg_mca 3 года назад
It was mentioned on the day by day posts, but I think the reason it wasn't counted was because the oil installations that were attacked may have been off the coast, and therefore not technically part of the landmass. That or because it was a morale attack against infrastructure and not a strike against a military target it was classified differently. Much like the whole wake vs aleutians debate, it's probably a technicality thing

@Grondorn

@@samuelgordino No it doesn't, and yes they do have the numbers. Malta was so weak at this moment that an airborne invasion would be enough to capture it completely without much resistance and with little hope of support to the Malta garrison. This could have been done in unison with the drive on Egypt, but the Germans were starting to be much too complacent.
@samuelgordino
@samuelgordino 3 года назад
@@Grondorn First you need navy that support the invasion with a very high chance off defeating any navy counterattack. The Italian navy doesn't have the fuel for that. If not, then you need to have enough planes to make any navy counterattack a suicide. The Germans have planes but they are in Russia. The Germans have troops on the ground in France alone to make the invasion but without the rest they are useless.
@Grondorn
@Grondorn 3 года назад
@@samuelgordino You don't need a Navy for an airborne invasion. Germans conquered Crete with two airborne divisions alone, which was a significantly more challenging operation since they were outgunned and outnumbered, which wouldn't be the case with Malta which was starving at this point. Considering the Italian Navy, while it is true that she was plagued with insufficient fuel throughout the war, the distance to Malta is negligible to make that an issue. And recent events in that timeline proved that the Italian Navy can defeat the Royal Navy since the British effort to supply Malta during Operation Harpoon, Vigorous and forthcoming Operation Pedestal were disastrous and produced terrible losses. And despite the German summer offensive in the USSR, The Luftwaffe still had a strong presence in the Mediterranean, committing more than a thousand aircraft in total.
