None of the longlist really calls to me yet, which is unusual for me. I'll wait for more Booktube reviews to come in. Love your new goofy profile pic by the way! we all need more goofiness 😸

I actually think 20 books a year translated from Catalan is loads, given that swathes of the African continent have tiny numbers of books translated into English (even if there are authors writing in French, hardly a small language); or look at books from India not written in English, for example. But of course, I'm all for variety in the Booker International, just wanted to say that that struck me!

I'm interested in the one from Bulgaria as I went there in 2005. I have heard great things about Whale and interested in reading that as well.

Gospodinov is a well known and accomplished writer and it's high time he is recognized in the anglophone world (which is true of the many writers coming from the Balkans).

Thx, Eric: I'm going to try to read Histoires de la nuit, which is the original French language edition of the translated The Birthday Party. So thank you again, as I'm looking forward to the challenge.

@@AnnNovella ofc this is disappointing to hear but it has to be better than Proust's "Lost Time" in which literally nothing ever happens

Interested that two authors deal with ambivalence around motherhood. I see more women / womxn questioning whether motherhood is for them so keen to see how its explored in novel form

I noticed the list skews a little old this time, a lot of Gen Xers. And amanda Svensson is the only millennial. I also noticed is very light on Asian languages. I was expecting to see Meiko Kawakami, Yoko Tawada, Can Xue, Han Kang.

The question of why Europe figures so much might also come down to all the languages there - North America, Australia and NZ, India and Sri Lanka, and some parts of Africa often have authors publishing in English and are therefore in the NON International Booker (bizarrely) like last year’s winner of that prize!

I just finished listening to Pyre the other night. While the narrator was excellent, I can’t recommend this book. I found it an extremely painful reading experience. Do you ever want to just reach into the pages of a book (or my iPad, in this case) and slap the characters? That’s how I felt with Pyre. The behavior of the husband’s family and those in his village was absolutely infuriating and eventually left me despondent. Maybe it’s true to life. Maybe it’s well written. But it’s also just brutal.

Oh sorry to hear that. I’ll let you know what I make of it. I’ve definitely had that feeling many times in the past of want to slap some characters.
