Imagine being a high school state champion before you're even in high school. For one 13-year-old, that dream is a reality; CBS2's Steve Overmyer reports.
big boi imagine spending all that time and money to interview and document this wrestler in person and leaving there without a single shred of wrestling culture or knowledge.
His school didn’t even have a dedicated wrestling room just shows you you don’t need everything to be a champion all about your mindset in the best with what you got
Fr my one friend wrestled for this one school and their wrestling room was literally falling apart and he was the only kid who wrestled and took 5th in the state and is now wrestling at Baldwin Wallace. He's also a national qualifier as a freshmen, it really does just come down to mindset
NoMoney CarGuy they don’t all transition to mma after man. Look at all the great Olympic wrestlers who don’t do that. Just because you’re a good wrestler doesn’t mean you like mma
NoMoney CarGuy You just said “he will do mma after” as if you know his own personal aspirations. Wrestling is a good tool for mma, but it is only one aspect of mma. Most high level wrestlers actually don’t make the transition into mma, and just stick with wrestling. Plus were talking about a 7th grader.
That awesome attitude will always carry this young man forward! What a tourney on his part! He I am sure, like his parents and family are very, very proud of him! GREAT JOB!
@@christianarrizon9796 hell yea it is!! I think NY is probably in the top 4 wrestling states as far as HS moving on to College and beyond. I live in Florida and we are not known for our wrestling. 🤼♂️🥋🏄🏽♂️
Great stuff PJ...looking forward to watching you advance and go off to college/Olympics. I hear Penn State has a decent program...hint, hint. ...and I’m in California.
Damn... this is actually a modern feat of athletics. Not even middle school basketball players can compete with highschoolers, let alone beat them all. Wrestling is also a different animal, as it’s far more physical as a combat sport... all while in the heavily populated and very competitive state of New York. Incredible.
arent there weight classes to wrestling and saying most highshoolers arent as light as that 13 year old i would say he was wrestling people close to his age
This happens alot, but what's the difference between a 7th grader beating a 9 grader, or a sophomore beating a senior..NOTHING..very low percentage of kids wrestling since they were 5 or 6..most kids dont wrestle until middle or high school and they almost never catch up to kids that have been wresting their whole lives..and even they said his sister was all sectional team 2 years ago..they're a wrestling family..that advantage alone will get him to college
Most kids just goin to high school practice for 2 hours after school wrestling a bunch of kids that are average..he been at a wrestling "school" for yearss wrestling hammers 3 times a week
InternetMunchies: What's the difference between a 7th grader and a 9th grader? It's called puberty. That's something you may learn when you get old enough to experience it.
@@hysteria7631 not necessarily true at all..kids the lifted weights in middle school will be stronger than a freshman that hasnt...and let's be real..ain't no 106 matured yet 99 percent of the time..that's why they wrestle 106..ain't many seniors down that low
Not shitting on him but I knew a kid in high school who had a 24-0 record as a freshman in that same weight class, but 22 of those wins were forfeits because the other schools didn't have a 99 lbs wrestler & both times he actually wrestled were vs the same kid. The next year after a growth spurt he quit wrestling because he was getting mauled in the 120 lbs class & lost his 1st 13 matches.
@@jesuschrist912 you dont know what youre talking about haha. He teched multiple seniors and juniors this year. Kid is on another level for HighSchool period.
I was at the Championships. In talking with people from other schools, they think there's a good chance the kid transfers to a prep school. His sister is already at Wyoming Seminary Prep School in Pennsylvania
I would assume at his weight most kids are in the 7th, 8th and 9th grade. So the "Varsity" word and is a little overstated. However what he did was pretty outstanding. Especially not allowing a point to be scored from any of his opponents.
@@ddown71 it's really not that serious...lol. The kid is talented. No question. As for your comparison I'd say it's alot different in college. All grown men.
@@climbtime1868 that's impressive. Definitely going to keep up on his career. Great start so far. Wish my state would allow middle schoolers in high school sports.
@@ddown71 by the way go check Trackwrestling for their state tourney. It will confirm what I stated about the 99 pound weight class. Not an assumption.
Mark Hall was imported here to Apple Valley High School but won the HS championship 7-12th grade which would be 2011-2016. Here is his senior season bracket: www.tstuff.com/2016/s16w38.htm
Since he wrestled at such a light weight, he can still challenge himself by going up in weight classes in the future.Hopefully he isn't afraid to wrestle people bigger than him. I grew up wrestling against larger wrestlers, but the lighter wrestlers including the state champions refused to wrestle me because I was so much stronger than them. Had they wrestled me, it would have benefited both of us because they would learn how to wrestle against stronger wrestlers and I would finally get the experience of wrestling against wrestlers almost as fast as me.
Jesse Jantzen got 3rd at States in 7th and 8th grade, then went undefeated 4 straight years and he’s considered the best ever in NY. This kid is already having a better start. He could win 5 state titles.
Including all the tournament matches its not hard for lots of schools to get kids over 40 matches. Top ranked kid in my weight class at states was a kid named TJ and he was 49-0 going into his finals match. That means 50 matches that season.
CA doesn’t even have a 99lb div.. they start at 103’s... how many high school wrestlers above sophomore can make that weight... still pretty crazy tho I guess
A few NYers who won states in 8th grade were Jesse Jantzen (NCAA champ), Troy Nickerson (NCAA champ), Jacori Teamer (current NCAA wrestler) and Adam Buseielo (Current NCAA wrestler). I think there are 2-3 more but that's it. NY is not a easy state tournament.
Indiana used to have a 95# then 103# ,112# etc for many years, not sure when we did away with 95# sometime in 90's I guess. Anyway we had it for many years. and there were some really good ones. One thing we have never allowed is to permit middle school to complete on a high school level.
just in some states allow it if you’re exceptional. Happens in individual sports like wrestling and tennis mostly. Sometimes basketball. The kid went undefeated, so it’s not like he didn’t belong.
