It would be easier to cut the coupler and weld a new one than to try and tangle with that lock Can't wait until you come out with a puck lock. Will definetly upgrade from his prior best reviewed lock.
@@AuxiliaryPanther Not too mention he's a lawyer and they always hedge their bets, so he would never use a term like certified due to liability exposure. That's why he very carefully say a lock I would use, not this is something you should buy or use.
I believe his full-time job is actually as a security consultant. So while there’s not necessarily a label I think he does give a seal of approval of some kind to companies
It is really smart advertisement. If you are evil, you could produce one really expensive prototype lock thats really good, but than focus on producing similar looking cheaper locks with lower quality.

The odds of anyone ever actually being able to remove this lock in the real world are basically none. I mean, nobody's gonna break it, and it took a master lockpicker over a minute to pick *with* a custom-made tool designed specifically to pick this rare type of lock. If someone manages to get past this, there's not anything you could've done to stop them in the first place.
And if you can go to such lengths to steal the items protected by such a thing, you can probably get access to a tilt tray truck n just lift the sucker away. There's always a way around.
@@DiscoFang I believe LPL mentioned this in a separate video with a coupler lock. It's either welded on or bolted, the latter case being one to watch out for when considering a lock.
That is always the problem with a really secure lock. The things around it are not as strong. On a house it's easier to crowbar the door to get in than it is to pick the lock.
I would say its probably even easier to have a bigger trailer to put the target trailer on and secure it and drive off that way. Or just have a trailer and a few motivated thief buddies to move the asset from the target trailer to other one.
It's designed to go over it quite far so in theory you can't get a power tool between the trailer and the vehicle, however there will always be a work around in practice, eg go underneath. The important thing is that the lock company themselves won't be the weakest link.

I've got an idea how to make it even safer: left handed threads on the protective cap. That would throw off 90% of the people for a couple of minutes for sure
A few years ago I had a trailer with a different Reese coupler lock that had been stolen. They didn't even break the coupler lock. They winched the trailer onto a bigger trailer, strapped it down, and off they went. I've now made it a habit to chain a wheel to the frame and chain the entire trailer to my flag pole, alongside coupler and pin locks. Thieves I tell ya.
@@thesunisfun423 that was easy? if he did anything he sold more of them... hitting something that hard that loud that many times would defiantly draw attention. that lock made him look like a fool.
EXCELLENT suggestion. All British airmen in WWII carried a hidden map of Germany, France, etc. during missions. It was made of silk, printed, and folded into a TINY block. The block was then put inside a hollow brass button on their flight jacket, with a left hand thread. Despite looking for it for 6 years, the German never found a single one. True story.

@@omegablaze135 I don’t think the lock in that video even compares to this one in terms of the language he used here. The comment section in that vid thought him “struggling” to open the first core was a ringing endorsement. This video was an actual endorsement.

Well, when there's a video praising a paperweight as being more secure than a "real" Master lock...it might well be better used as a form of measurement, than security.

I personally own this lock, and you can register your key number with them incase you lose it. No need to cut it off.. They also send you 4 keys with the lock too :)
They knew what they were doing. It’s a prototype. If he got it open fast, they would have made changes and the changes would be what they promoted. Smart move.
@@seanj3667 considering they used disk detainer, all they really needed to do was focus on making it brute force resistant. They could stand to make a lot of money in a short amount of time just applying this logic to a bunch of different lock applications
@@midnightjay1343 I highly doubt any significant money would be made using this tactic. Beefy locks against brute force attacks are so unnecessary in most applications, and incredibly expensive to make and purchase.
@@falquicao8331 it’s probably the equivalent. Unless you are in science, design, or architecture (and other job related things), most measurement systems are fine as long as there is understanding between the people. Miles or kilometers don’t mean really anything unless you have an understanding of the distance. Outside of what I mentioned above, there really isn’t a difference between pounds and kilograms. They are just numbers.
@@falquicao8331 It's basically the heart of the imperial system - choose an everyday object that everyone is familiar with, and then use it to measure things. The metric system is the weird one with is quasi-scientific units of measure that have zero relevance to the everyday world and are usually out of proportion to the things they are measuring..
@@ARCNA442 I would say the imperial system is can be easier to visualize at the beginning, but more difficult to work with if you need to change scales often. Metric is more arbitrary, but also more organized (though I come from a metric using country so I'm kind of biased towards it)
Huge respect to Altor for continuing to send their products to LPL. They had to know he'd get through, and fairly quickly, but use his skills as a sort of acid test.
Altor Execs: "OK team, LPL just gave the prototype trailer lock his highest praise. Take it to production immediately and whatever MSRP we were considering, double it."
You forgot the most important part: "Cut production cost at least in half. No need for the final product to be as strong as the prototype as long as it looks the same"
@@Trenjeska got it on my front and rear door because of him. also re-enforced the frame so hopefully it will be a very loud and determined effort before my other defenses need to come on haha
Another consideration for this lock is you will be picking the lock with the cylinder facing the ground just to add an additional degree of difficulty.
I was thinking this exact thing. It took LPL two minutes to pick this, with a custom made tool, in a controlled environment. Imagine being just a dude out in a driveway somewhere under extreme pressure, upside down with the wrong tools. Forget it.
@@Marinealver BosnianBill's pick does not work on Abloys as you cannot put tension on the zeroth cover disc. That vulnerability was fixed decades ago. You need Huxleypig's version that LPL is using here.
So after 1339 videos, we should conclude that every lock needs to be the same size and weight as a kettle ball, made out of thick metal, and with a lock that only LPL has the tool to open.

I would recommend keeping an eye on altor because they seem to have a mission now, to create a lock for every purpose that is physically resistant to angle grinders and other similar power tools. And if they continue pursuing that mission then this world will become a lot safer
@@the_undead They do need to keep changing their lock core, though. The reason a commercially available tool doesn't exist yet is because it's less common. Once a core becomes common, a tool for it will become common.
@@Merennulli I don't think it's necessary. Just like what LPL said, it would take a specialized tool AND some skills to pick this lock. But if skilled pickers are going to pick altor, they are going to pick it for the challenge and not for stealing the trailer.
@@Merennulli picking a lock is not the main problem that you deal with when in more practical use especially once you start getting into the higher end stuff like this detainer cores with a lot of false Gates, and that won't be an issue for a considerable amount of time. The main problem is destructive attacks, destructive attacks are the main reason that Master Lock puts so little effort into their cores because they probably don't see it as worth it to put that much effort in compared to what you're going to get for it in terms of practical use. That being said I think more effort should be put into the pick resistance of a core but the outer stuff even if a tool does become in common use which I highly doubt because Matt Smith has all kinds of effort put into making sure that nobody can manufacture his lockpicks. Which leaves us at destructive entry is the only realistic method someone is going to break into the altor SAF locks. And these things are so resistant to brute force that I would happily trust them for years to come
@@Merennulli the only reason I wouldn't trust these is if some new standard of battery powered angled grinder becomes a thing like say the standard size is a 5-in disc instead of a four and a half inch disc
It’s safe to say that the majority of thieves will not possess the skills to open this lock. Are there those who can? Yes, are those that skilled stealing bicycles? I doubt it.
Nah, you’d be surprised how often you can find these “custom tools” made as a knockoff by some Chinese company. They see how many people would be looking to buy it, make a semi-functional one, and people probably buy multiples expecting at least one to break.
I sent a message to ALTOR the manuf. complimenting them.. and this was their response. : ALTOR: Thank you! The engineering team has been working very diligently in creating a lock that can withstand a power tool attack and one that LPL would enjoy picking. (We are huge fans) Hopefully we are past the supply chain challenges and we will be shipping out the locks next month. ~ALTOR customer service team

@@jjvoich that method is also insanely dangerous to use, and if someone's crazy enough to try it, pretty much the only thing that's gonna stop them in the first place is shooting to kill.
I love how there are so many lock manufacturers that literally use LPL's word as part of their advertisement. If he says it's a good lock then you know for damn sure that it's a good lock.
Overheard at the lock company: "Quick, get the guys at the factory to change the packaging to read "LPL says he won't hesitate to use... One of the best you can buy!". We'll make a fortune!"
Keep in mind that what LPL just did would have to be done upside down if the lock was installed. That doesn't sound like it would be difficult, but turning any activity upside down adds an interesting layer of difficulty.

Where I live we don’t have a big need of locks ! But for some strange reason I find myself watching the LPL all the time ! Almost as crazy as the SAF locks ! We need a lock like this to protect our boarders !
To date.... I believe this is the FIRST video that LPL actually recommended and would use. Oddly enough, I had just seen the first advertisement for this like an hour ago on YT... Leave me alone big brother! Another great vid! :)
Spectacular video and a fantastic lock! One thing of note that most commenters have missed... This lock is made to be installed UPSIDE DOWN on the coupler, so you would need to not only make your own picks for it, but also do it lying down, working face up on the ground with the full weight of that lock directly above your face. Umm.... No ! I would not hesitate to use it, but it may be overkill for utility trailers!
As a construction worker with a trailer i have to lock every job. This is by far the best “get this ball lock” i have ever heard. Guaranteed i’m getting this
I think that's because he knows what he can and should say. Blindly claming it will protect against everything makes him vulnerable to being quoted if not sued for false advertisement as well as his reputation which is on stake. Yes a bunch of cheap ass companies claim way more with way shittier products that they stole from the 8 year old Chinese kid while it was still making it. But that just shows his standards and that he is aware of his potential influence. There isn't a lock that protects 100%, for a fact there exists nothing that protects you for 100% from anything. Regardless if we are talking about locks or not. So his words are Chosen very carefully.

4 minute Vid, then he opens it in under two minutes. They tense, then they realize he had to create a custom tool just to do that... and he gives a glowing review. Thumbs up to Altor! Their confidence paid off!
@@JediKnyghte Unfortunately their tool is optimised for front-tensioning disk detainers, and whilst there are techniques you can use such as tensioning off a middle disk at the end using the picking tip and then setting disk one using the tensioner, these don't work on every dd lock. This tool, based on a design by Matt Smith, allows for tensioning from the middle or back of the lock (as he is in this case).
I think this is the first time I've heard you actually say you would use this lock. I always watch hoping there is a lock out there that you like instead of laugh at.
LOL: This reminds me of my mother. She parked her car in a parking lot for a phone call and a truck drove past her taking her side mirror with him... She immediately used the horn, but he just drove on and she started chasing him and followed him for over 2km while hitting the horn repeatedly. He then entered a company with a security checkpoint. My mother was directly behind him but obviously couldn't follow him inside. However, she told the approaching guards what he did and pointed at the damage... They didn't bring him back to her, but the company gave her compensation for the damages and I bet that the guy got in trouble...
What’s even more impressive than this lock is the number of subscribers you have. I recall when you had a couple hundred thousand subs. Then in the span of a month, blamo! You had over a million. I didn’t know there were that many interested viewers. You rock!
The bike lock version of this is a good design. The outer shell is made from aluminum which clogs up grinder discs when thieves try to cut the lock and the inner core is made from hardened steel. It's an expensive lock though that retails for $300.
Yeah, but when your bike can cost 5K or more that bike lock would be lovely. Of course, that's for the ones who do get bikes like that. I'd probably end up with a bike about $250, if I really wanted one.
@@_BangDroid_ if you watch the video on it, he explains that it is intended to be left at one location, eg locked onto the bike rack. It's not intended to be carried with the user.
@@_BangDroid_ Yes, the use case IS confusing. A bike expensive enough to warrant a $300 lock is going to be decked with expensive components also ripe for theft that won't be protected by any lock. Basically, any bike expensive enough to warrant a $300 lock is a bike you'd never lock in the first place.... you'd take it inside.
When even LPL needs a fully customized tool and experience with this core and still visibly struggled? That’s when you know you’ve got something seriously strong. Throw in the protection against brute force and this becomes terrafying

@@HSishi Nope. The lock cylinder faces down. The lock lug moves up in the locked position and secures into the bottom of the hitch (where the ball would go).
I was thinking the same. Looks like they sat down watched his videos saw what he hated in other locks and built the best lock they could, and it paid off.
I have watched videos as a Sub and this is the first lock that I have bought because of a video. For my father, so his new trailer is not stolen. Thank you LPL!
My lock showed up 2 weeks ago. It is a beast. My father was very happy to receive it and we put it on the travel trailer right away. Fits great and looks great. Thanks for the recommendation and review.
I like how he’s like “there is no tool that is sold that can unlock this lock.” So then he just makes his own lock picking tool for it 😂 .Only LPL can do that.

I like how hard this is to pick and how brutally hard it would be to brute force. If I need a trailer lock, this is the best one I've ever seen and would definitely be my choice.
