Sorry that my trap got stuck. It was meant to be easier to turn back than it was. I picked it to the other side (before adding the spools) and it turned back easier. This was designed to be a "proof-of concept" of my new false trap technology. The holes were a little rough, but it still managed to turn back with a bit of jiggling. Due to the fact that you, one of the most talented internet pickers, failed to open this awfully-bitted lock fully, means that I can call my locks "virtually pick-proof" without feeling like a fool. Before you send the Paclock, try giving it light BOK tension and raking aggressively, especially on the front. The hint about the lock being not key-retaining whatsoever implies the cuts are 1

Thor, no worries a Paclock is on it's way to you. It really was excellent work and now that I understand that the pins should have turned back out of the trap this is definitely a valid challenge lock. I was wondering why it wouldn't turn back but after I messed with it for a while and the key ultimately turned it OUT of the trapped position, I understand the intent. I have to admit, the bitting was a bit odd and had me wondering what was going on....psychological warfare, huh?

What I feel should be done is a rule that challenge locks should now on be submitted under two different categories. Standard "Lock Sport" Challenge Locks and Non-Standard "Exhibition" Challenge Locks. At least this way there would be an expectation from the beginning that the lock is a trap or has similar "denial of entry" methods employed. With the exhibition locks I feel the viewers should then vote on whether the maker should be awarded a prize for creativity, etc.

I think Thor should get a Pac Lock. If you had been unable to reset the lock then I would have said otherwise.
@PaulSteMarie

Reversible traps like this are perfectly fair play for the lock designer. Its just more complication and false paths in search of a solution Traps that effectively cause the lock to self-destruct are a different story, since they block solving the lock through observation and experiment and instead reduce you to relying on dumb luck.
@bradw0535

@Saturn2K2

Pac-lock. And if you're going to consider getting trapped unlocking the lock, you might as well consider falling into a false gate unlocking the lock. As long as you can reverse out of the "trap," I wouldn't disqualify it.

Well... This was supposed to be an re-lockable false trap lock (basically an very big unpickable false-set until you re lock it. If he can give it an other try in the other direction and relock it after the trap this lock should be valid (is a proof of concept)

For those traps, all you have to do is create a little ramp for the pins to be able to reset so you don't have to disassemble the lock for a retry.

Yeah I thought it was funny too. Thor left clues with the words “master and wafer”. Most locksporters know both these words can mean different things. Master wafer and master wafer are two different things. Locksmiths call those master pins “wafers” because they are so thin. They can be a problem too if they flip sideways and out of their chamber.
@---cr8nw
@---cr8nw 5 лет назад
Sure, he used the words "master" and "wafer", but he didn't use them together. And he used "master" in an appropriate context. He said the bitting was "Master Lock" approved. Did you see the bitting? He's not wrong.

That braided security seal is actually meant for putting on trucks. They come pre-printed with a serial number and the paperwork must have this serial number on for the transport to be valid. At the destination they must check the serial number on the seal for the one in the papers and if they dont match up, they will refuse to receive any goods inside the truck.
@sebastiannielsen
@sebastiannielsen 5 лет назад
No. You are a Little bit wrong there. The seal is used when declaring goods at customs. Then the customs officials check all the goods against paperwork, and then seal the container. When passing the next customs checkpoint, you only have to show paperwork, they check the seal number, and thus, they don't need to recheck the contents of the container. They know that the paperwork matches the content if the seal is valid, thus they only need to check the paperwork for any prohibited items or items that need to be taxed. This is used for transiting through multiple countries.
@JohnDoe-bd5sz
@JohnDoe-bd5sz 5 лет назад
Sebastian Nielsen I know for a fact that these seals are also used for transports inside the same country. Even your country, judging by your name. They are used as a tamperseal to make sure that the goods were not tampered with in transit.
@pr0xZen
@pr0xZen 5 лет назад
I'd say both are mostly true, I've seen this seal used both for import/country transit transport, and interregional transports. Usually high value transports, some chemical or explosive transports, and at least once transporting under-development/testing cars.

Trap locks like this should be a go to. This lock is great because a key even resets it. If you're protecting something and a trap happens, you know its been an attempted pick whether you're home or not. $20-$100 is better than what you can expect from someone breaking in.

Don't think the key did anything other than more force to turn the core back. He probably could do it with the tentioner too. It just looks like the trap holes are a little slanted so you can turn it back because the key weren't anywhere close to the bible pins to reset it.

@bosnianbill I think you should reconsider the trap locks being picked if you fall into the trap. If you pick the wafers all the way up you successfully pick the lock, if you don't get those wafers up and you hit the trap then you failed to open the door and the customer is still locked out. On a side note I would think a modification to the rule about traps would be warranted. My suggestion would be: "key or lock pick must be able to free the lock from the trap."
@Mister_Brown
@Mister_Brown 5 лет назад
i'm in the camp of "if it is pickable 100% of the time by someone with enough time and skill it's valid" in this case it was: the traps weren't deep enough to trap it in reverse but i suspect that was unintentional. the hilarious bitting and key mummification probably warrant this getting a paclock with the caveat of no more traps getting paclocks.

Ive found that for normal locks, the best and fastest way to pick is to use a common rake. Hold maximum pressure on the tension wrench, use the rake to push all of the pins as high as they will go. The pressure on the tension wrench will keep all of the pins held up as high as they can go. Then slowly and gently release pressure on the tension wrench until you hear all of the pins click. [ It takes a few trys to know what certian clicks sound like. (If it was half of the pin, or the whole pin. If it was the whole pin, then you have to start over.) ] Once all of the pins click, then push the tension wrench forward again and the lock will open. I was able to unlock every door in my house with this method in under 5 seconds each.
@MerkDolf

Yes PAC lock for Thor. Picking to the correct level is part of the pick just like if you were picking a best lock to open and not change you have to pick to the correct level. But it should be able to turn back so it shouldn't be a full trap only trap in open direction.

I vote paclock. With a little force the trap didn't require disassembly to reset. And the technique could easily be added to real world locks to make them much more secure. But with the technique demonstrated, it should be considered used or taken, and others should have to perform a different technique to get their own paclock.
@pr0xZen
@pr0xZen 5 лет назад
I stand in line with the others. If a "trap" is pickable simply by picking the set correctly, it is fair game. Especially if it can be reset by key. It would be something completely different IMO, if it was a no-key unpickable trap. How about using the key to release the trap and call only that current 10 minute segment a failed attempt (?) - If when gutting it shows that it can't be correctly picked, it will only open with key, then its a flawed challenge lock. He did give you a whole bag of hints Bill. There's 2 common typed of wafers. You didn't see the one kind, but he clearly stated it was a wafer lock. Gutting portion of video clearly demonstrated what I believe the internets call "butthurt". Didn't do a proper cjallenge lock and the handy work any justice at all.

Uhh ohh bill. Oh no you don't, you don't get the free pass to consider you succeeded to pick a challenge lock if you manage to pick it back into a locked up state! That means you succeeded to fall into a trap. That's kind of like a SWAT member breeching a door then taking one step into the doorway onto a beartrap, we wouldn't call that a successful breech would we? :P I would suggest you ask your lock creators to specify if it has a trap inside and create a different segment or challenge lock classification just for traps, because they can be quite clever and interesting to the security community however we don't want you to spend all your time and patience opening trap locks. You have to admit your trap lock creators have put out some really good locks with a lot of time into trap technology. I myself have thought of some very interesting ideas for traps but am less inclined to create a trap lock and send to you if you consider you beat my challenge of getting my lock open when it is still locked. Just my opinion though. 😊

Trap pins are like any other pin. If you cannot pick the trap pin correctly, you cannot open the lock. However, trap pins are akin to cheating in locksport. I would consider trap pins as an anti pick security measure, not appropriate for use in locksport.

That is a risky road to go down and is how you wind up with for example defensive shooting sports race guns that look nothing like anything anyone would carry. You have to decide at some point, is the sport its own thing? Or are you still interested in keeping it connected to reality?

Well... This was supposed to be an re-lockable false trap lock (basically an very big unpickable false-set until you re lock it. If he can give it an other try in the other direction and relock it after the trap this lock should be valid (is a proof of concept)

So what you’re saying is, this lock is too good at being unpickable, so it “doesn’t count”. That seems wrong to me.

Hopefully that means you got my second challenge lock in the post

Yes, it came in but I have not had time to play with it yet. I'll try to get to it this week. Thank you!

@@bosnianbill oh perfect Bill, well that is the important thing. That the postal service did not lose it or steal it. Looking forwards to you picking it open when you get a chance 😀. Thank you Bill. Was literally watching your old video on Chinese disc detainer lock exploits lol

I opened the package today and started to video it. As I started raking it the core turned and pulled partially out. At least 1 chain ball fell out. I didn’t realize it but it looks like the circlip fell off while i was raking it. The lock is still open and the key is still sealed up (probably won’t work now tho) and I’ll mail it back tomorrow. In view of your multiple tries, I’m also sending a pacloc for your efforts.

@@bosnianbill I seem to be jinxed a bit when it comes to cores slipping out....that is frustrating....it has quite a tough biting so I don't think raking would have worked lol. It is a pity because I was looking forward to seeing you have trouble picking it lol. I will send you some more locks sometime but I won't try go for a whipped lol just for fun.

At what point does this go from being a sporting challenge to becoming a sadistic attempt at destroying a man's ability to teach others how to enjoy the sport.

Exactly. I don't think trap locks should qualify for "whipped." Anyone can make a 5 pin trap lock and beat most people every day. Childish way to win.

but the key can untrap it. so you can keep trying. it doesn't "destroy" the lock
@NaughtyPrincessfkhandles

I don't really see the way the key did anything because the trapped pinnes where on the side of the key. It just look like a slope on the traps to be able to turn it back.

@@NaughtyPrincessfkhandles You're correct. The trapped pins just didn't hold when turned by the key with much more force than his tensioner would provide I believe.
