(1371) Whipped: Anker by Darrel & His Wife

Darrel & his wife send in this anker challenge lock and it kept me fully frustrated for over 30 minutes before I finally declared a whipped by video. I was REALLY surprised by what I found inside this lock and STILL cannot understand how it was able to resist every trick that I threw at it. NO feedback whatsoever leads me to think the tolerances on Anker locks are super tight and the cylinders are almost perfectly aligned.

When I saw that key I thought someone had split the pins in half, and the right side pins had to be picked to a different level than the left side pins, for each individual pin! Now that'd be a lock to try and get into!

Probably what stumped him was the tolerences of the lock itself.

its just a regular key its not a special key at all.............. those are natural flats from where the key was milled when it was made its the over hang of the milling of the key that makes it look weird such radical warding in the lock makes radical milling on the key and this is what that looks like some very paracentric keyways look like this when cut to certain depthss
@dbillionaer
@dbillionaer 5 лет назад
he didnt grind the key down those are natural flats from where the key was milled its the over hang of the milling of the key that makes it look weird such radical warding in the lock makes radical milling on the key and this is what that looks like some very paracentric keyways look like this when cut to certain depths looks weird because of the zigzag of the warding so say you leave the depth at zero(blank) the top of the key is to the right at that height / cut it to a 3 depth now look at the key profile and the top of the key is to the left \ cut it in between at a 2 and you get those weird overhangs ] and deeper the other overhang [ so it will look like the key is switching sides as the deeper you go and you will get some weird spots where its suuuuuuper wide
@georgelangrick7384
@georgelangrick7384 3 года назад
I understand your explanation of the key profile giving that appearance when cut to depths that intersect with the aggressive warding in the key design but there was more going on here - you could see that the key was twice the normal thickness and appeared that it was two joined together, that may not be the case but there was definitely more to the story...

Never heard of that brand of lock. It almost seems like the warding was what made that lock so difficult, which is something kind of unusual to see in a challenge lock

The first lock I ever picked was on a cheap filing cabinet in my room when I was about sixteen, and I used a zip tie as the pick. I was also able to pull the lock off, and take it apart. Since then I have picked a lock using bobby pins, but I need to practice more because I cannot pick consistently. For example I was locked out of my house, and I could not pick my way in. We were lucky a window was unlocked.
@MrV1NC3N7V3G4
@MrV1NC3N7V3G4 5 лет назад
I've noticed your latest trend is to try to rake a false set at the beginning and then in the middle as well if you think you've oversee pins. Do you think attempting to get a head start this way is detracting from your normal method of finesse spp? When I first researched lockpicking, the description said locks are picked due to the loose tolerances of the holes and pins that allows pins to bind in a certain order and be picked. I guess that proves that exact tolerances can make a highly pick resistant lock.
@stratsteveo106
@stratsteveo106 5 лет назад
The tolerance is everything. That is one of the factors that dictates the tension. Kwikset or defiants have low tolerance and assa abloy or keymark or even corbin russwin have tight tolerances. When im working i always rake first, then use a half diamond to get the remaining pins. When I'm picking for fun and i kno there is security pins ill use my hook and single pin pick
@bosnianbill
@bosnianbill 5 лет назад
I agree with Stella the Locksmith. I find that raking high tolerance locks sometimes gets me one of two pins set - usually standard pins - and I can get on with SPPing the remaining security pins. Raking first is very common in competitions as it gets the "junk" pins out of the way and often gets you a false set, which is exactly what you want.
@MrV1NC3N7V3G4
@MrV1NC3N7V3G4 5 лет назад
@@bosnianbill Oh, I completely understand the reasoning since you put yourself on a timer for the challenge locks, and I agree that it can potentially start you with a picked pin or two, but I just think you're good enough to SPP most locks without raking a false set. You've taught me a lot (mostly theory) but did inspire me to pick up a Sparrows pick set along with the Tuxedo set in .15 quite a while back. I guess I see you as a teacher and cramming in a rake and going crazy, while maybe effective, seems more like what I did before I started watching your videos.
@dbillionaer
@dbillionaer 5 лет назад
there exists a certain progression when picking locks over time at first you're flopping your hand around trying to get anything to happen then you are raking with some degree of control eventually skill forms and you are more precise and feel raking is a little barbaric and move to SPP eventually you realize time is money and getting the first few set with a couple of good rake strokes and going in after with a hook usually will shorten your time and time in this life is the most expensive and cherished thing you have so eventually youll probably do it too

Bill, you should try the US General padlock at Harbor Freight which sells for about $7. It is really quite nice for such a low price, it has 5 (kinda crappy rounded) spools, it's very solid and not shimmable. It's not a difficult pick but it's the best lock you'll get for that price. In LPL's recent wrench video it put up quite a fight. Also, I re-pinned mine with security pins I got from a commercial lock that was missing its key... and that really improved the pick resistance.

Seeing that set of Best keys from the bumplab.com, what are those green rubber grommets used for? Some came in a repinning kit and the seller said they were 'just free extras' without an explanation.
@LuckyStrike01
@LuckyStrike01 2 года назад
They are used to castrate sheep normally. In the lock picking world though you roll a couple onto the end of a bump key to work like a spring so you don’t have to keep pulling the key out a little with each bump. It allows you to just keep striking it with a screwdriver or bump hammer while alternating tensioning and makes bumping much easier and faster with most locks.

Hey Bill... What's a proper lockset (knob and deadbolt) for a residential door? Something that can't be picked in 1 second.
@stratsteveo106
@stratsteveo106 5 лет назад
Well you dont have to use a knob, you could use a lever and put any kick cylinder you want in it, from schlage to yale or assa. But for knobs, stay away from the kwikset style keyways because they are super easy. Some schlage knobs have T pins in them which is pretty cool. You will get what you pay for. But security wise, a thief rarely picks locks. If you know how to pin locks you can build it to be a trap lock as well

@johnfrancisdoe1563
@johnfrancisdoe1563 5 лет назад
pileofstuff A single wafer means this cylinder takes two keys: The resident key and the master key. Another apartment will have the same master key, different resident key, thus a different wafer and pin in that position. Shared door would leave that position unpinned to accept all these keys.
