The new base model 14 inch MacBook Pro with 8 core M1 Pro and 14 core GPU has drawn criticism for being a double-binned M1 Pro at 2 thousand dollars. But being the cheapest M1 Pro MacBook Pro, I thought it was worthy of performance test and benchmark evaluation. So today we'll find out if the 14 inch MacBook Pro is worth the extra, and if the base model M1 Pro is good enough!

This may sound like a stupid question (I do not do any sort of video editing/graphic design and am not at all the target market for these new laptops) but I was watching this video on my 13" m1 pro so how can I see so clearly the difference between the two? Shouldn't it cap at the lowest common denominator and therefore look the same?

I mean depends on what you like. Fair point, but some people need to do more intensive tasks such as heavy video editing. In those circumstances, you would want the fan which the air doesn't have. At the same time, you really don't need the 14 inch if you're doing video editing. The m1 13 will more than suffice.

The original M1 series is a real beast! I do a large amount of ProRes 4K video editing, so the unique ProRes hardware acceleration is certainly worth it and not really shown in these types of benchmarks. It seems to me the real consideration for you would be future proofing. If you have been doing this for a while, and you are good to your machines, going with higher RAM and a faster CPU will likely future proof this thing for 3 to 5 years. They won't likely be making any major leaps in display technology for a while, so you might find yourself appreciating the higher headroom of a somewhat upgraded 16 inch versus the baseline 14 after two or three years as your apps evolve. That is, of course, if you find the room in your budget.

Do 16gb vs 32 gb on the Pros please!! I think that’s the most important decision most people need to make. It’s 400$ difference (or 600$ if you go with the 24 cores). Is it worth it for most users or 16GB is enough? What about future proofing? I’m worried that 16GB (same as my M1 air) may be too little.

I predict that M2 (10-core GPU) will be quite close to the performance of the double binned M1 Pro in terms of multi-core and GPU, and obviously will have faster single-core. So base 14" may be a better choice now, but the new machine(s) with M2 may be an even better value next year, especially with support for multiple monitors...

I'll admit, it was confusing to follow and had to go rewatch a few segments. The video started with the premis of pitting the 13" M1 against the 14" M1 pro, but abruptly changed the conversation to focus on the base M1 pro vs full M1 pro. The 13" M1 was kind of abandoned once it was obviously not in the same race as the M1 pro causing some confusion IMO. It felt like two different videos merged into one. However, this video is still has very valuable information and I am thankful that you compared the two new versions of the M1 pro as I did not think there would be such as small difference between the two. I wonder how much different the M1 max will be and look forward to that video.

I agree with you, he tried to fit two videos into one. But Luke first established that the M1 Pro crushes the M1 so he started comparing the differences between M1 Pro vs. M1 Max. I mean depends on what you like. I got the 13” pro over the air solely for the brighter screen, touchbar, better speakers, better battery, better mics, 1 more GPU core, and I personally like the touchbar. I’d say those are about $300 worth of differences for people who care about those things

@@toptiertech7291 yes, there are definitely a few ways in which it is better. But this is the closest MacBook Air has ever been to the Pro, and you really aren’t losing out on that much with $300 in savings. Apple has a very strong MacBook lineup. You really can’t go wrong with any of them

I think the 14" is totally worth it compared to the M1 13" MPB. By the time you add in the 16Gb RAM and the 512GB SSD upgrades you're up to $1700 USD, so just $300 difference for the ports larger and better screen.

I think this video is very biased in favour of the 14 inch because it doesn't mention at all the one big advantage the 13 inch has over it: battery life. The 13 inch gets double the battery life of the 14 inch while the 14 inch had a battery life comparable to the Intel models. That's a big deal as battery life was the biggest hype in the Macbook Pro at up to 20 hours and it's definitely something people need to consider as a Macbook is a portable device at the end of the day and battery life can make or break a buyer decision, especially with the M1 models as that is one of tut biggest reasons that people wanted the M1 Macbooks for. Even though I have a big CX OLED TV and high contrast and HDR is very important to me, I don't it is as relevant on a laptop as it is for a bigger screen or even an iPhone (it is great for battery life on an iPhone), I'm going with the speced out 13 inch because even though it's only 300 bucks of a difference, the poor battery life in the 14 inch is a deal breaker for me. I'd rather a hit in performance but get that crazy battery life which is perfect for a train commute or a Starbucks work day. I wish they'd make the XDR screens for a Macbook that puts efficiency over performance, then I'd happily pay 300 bucks extra for a 13 inch with the XDR display. But for now, battery life is a deal breaker

I enjoy going back and watching videos like yours and feel that I would love to see a video that explains the differences between the memory dependency of previous models versus the current models. This means I would like someone to explain how certain programs can require more memory than others and how having an Apple silicon computer has changed that for the better or worst. Because I am only assuming that Photoshop takes up the same amount of memory no matter what model Apple device your using, but maybe I am wrong. I guess I am curious if the memory is better optimized on the silicon Macs if Photoshop took 6 GB of memory on my new M1 MacBook and I am not set to see a huge performance drop since the laptop can respond better than earlier models. Thanks and keep up the great work.

Can you test: - react native compile - unity compile - .net compile & omnisharp performance/startup in large projects - ios compile (xcode) - browser performance (safari, firefox, chrome) on M1 mac (render time, a lot of tabs, heavy pages etc) - RuneScape 3 performance at different graphics settings - OSRS performance - blender in-editor performance. Not just the render, but the "fps" in the editor. - more (modern) games. MS Flight Sim, Valorant, CSGO, maybe BF2042 when it comes out - the notch vs menu items, mouse, games, other monitors etc. - performance when on a deskpad --> because a deskpad is soft, its own weight and the weight of my hands when I'm using it pushes it a little bit into the mat, which worsens the airflow. I see a slight (but noticeable) change in performance when I move it to a hard surface. I would like to know whether something like this affects the new version.

Thanks for this video. I also snagged the base 14-inch base model and was worried. I am also trading in my M1 Macbook Air for it. The M1 chip in that smoked a lot of machines that were way more expensive and had bigger specs on paper. The M1 air never flinched with anything I threw at it but did get hot on some tasks. So I realized I have nothing to worry about. The performance gains are gravy to the already fast M1 chips. I also appreciate the larger screen and ports. The dongles for the Air were annoying. Most people can get the 14-inch base and call it a day. It's really that good.

Furthermore, I haven't seen any videos of it driving any 4k high refresh external screens. If you happen to have that on hand, could you see if it's able to drive external screens with high refresh on the base 8/14 14" version or only reserved to the "standard M1 Pro"?
