Great video once again. This is one of very few channels that goes in-depth and does not feel like superficial promotion content. I don't think there's that big of a difference. it is known that the M1 version with 8gb of ram was already 20-30% slower in rendering than the 16GB version.

I think it makes sense to compare performance and price using a 13” MacBook Pro upgraded to 16gb RAM and 512gb SSD storage, since those are what the base model 14” comes with. In that case the base model 14” only costs $300 more with a better screen, ports, more GPU cores, faster SSD, etc.

@@lenavoyles526 base model, so 8gb/256gb on the 2020 M1 13", vs the 16gb/512gb on the 14" 2021 M1 Pro. I think the big decision comes down to battery life for deciding between the 13" and 14", as you can squeeze out roughly 1-2 more hours on the 13", so if all day battery is super important, that might end up being the determining factor for going with last year's model if you're matching specs.

Thanks for the video mate! I do a lot of office task, casual video editing, and some music production. I think I'd stick with my 2020 M1 MBP for now, since I don't need that much power. 2020 M1 MBP already did very very well for my needs.

Can you please compare the 14 inch BASE Macbook Pro with the 14 inch Macbook Pro with 10-Cores CPU and 14-Cores GPU (with the same RAM and Storage Config)? I would really like to see if the upgrade is worthwhile.

Include things like Importing media, scrubbing through the timeline, adding VFX and fusion titles. Adding special effects, color grading the clips, some audio editing and exporting. wrong calculation of battery. m1pro spent 59 points out of 100 as m1 spent 50 in the same tests/time. So the difference is about 20%. It means old m1 is more power-efficient as m1pro, which is obvious, as m1pro is more power (power-hungry).

Im gonna save someone a quick buck: If you dont do video editing on a high to professional level, you dont need this. Go for the M1 Air. It is absurd the level of work you can do with that given that price point.

i have bought the 14" base, i dont much use the processing power but i do need like 15 apps open at a time. scrolling and switching between my apps on day to day is pretty laggy on my 2017 13" pro. 13" is $600 cheaper and i cannot decide if i should return 14" and get the 13" or keep the 14".

The display brightness is locked at 500 nits. Only in HDR content are 1000 and 1600 possible. Very sad I canceled my order…

The funny thing is that in somewhere like Nigeria the price difference is so much wider, so here the 13" MBP M1 actually makes more sense because the new MBP is literally double the price after currency conversion. Which is sad because this new one is incredible

Mixture of both, but I think the M1 Pro was just slightly louder there from memory. Makes sense as it's got 6 more GPU cores packed into roughly the same surface area. Other than that one specific instance, the fan on the M1 Pro was always better than on the M1 MacBook.

awesome video...so for video editing...the 13" m1 might just be ok for 4k coming from a Sony a7iii? I can see you use FCP...what about Premiere Pro? Has it finally been optimzed? I can't wait to see some comparisons...Of course I'd like a 14"M1pro but it costs a lot more. I would even consider a 16GB mac mini M1 with 512GB SSD. Same processor as the 13" mac book pro m1. Premiere Pro is still horribly optimized, Final Cut Pro or DaVinci Resolve is much better. 13" M1 would be fine for 4K Sony A7III, as long as you don't get too crazy with effects or stack 2-3 lines worth of footage.

I just must use Premiere since that's what my employer has provided me with and the rest of the editor on staff must use it too...I hope Adobe gets its act together by the time the new imacs with M1pro/max chips come out I hope next year. I think that the 14" baseline will do for me-I'll get a 1TB hard drive. My budget is limited! Thanks so much...looking forward to your videos!

Nice comparison, thanks ! I'm going to stick with my 16GB Macbook 2020 M1 13" and not buy the 14". I think the MacBook Air M1 is still the best value for money (in fact, I would say unusually cheap, which the new 14's are not). However, a comparison of the MB M1 with 16GB versus the MB M1 pro with 16GB would be useful. There are many tests on YT that reported a 20-30% reduction in rendering times equipping the m1 with 16GB instead of 8GB.

I was just gonna get a 13in 16gb/512gb macbook pro and with those upgrades it was only $300 less, I just do college stuff, watching movies, some photoshop, and light gaming. WITH all that being said, It just seemed smarter to me to get a better screen, ports, and a few other things besides I plan to use it till it dies. Great comparison, thank you! I'm gonna stay on my 16, 512 13" Macbook Pro M1 and not buy the 14". Only heavy lifting I do is some photo editing and I would lose 700-800€ if I sell my Mac and buy the new one with the same config, Apple Care included. Also performance is still great for me on the M1 and battery life is better than the new one. Not worth it. I rather save my money and buy a new big iMac with M1 Ultra Max when it comes out.

Depends how you look at it. Besides being faster and have more ports the most important thing is the much better screen!! 120hz refresh rate and a better brighter crisper display makes a huge difference for me personally. But again you could still use yours happily and upgrade next year or two it's definitely a very fast capable laptop you have. Cheers!

The options for the 14 and 16” are still quite confusing. I thought 16gb would be enough for virtualisation but now maybe not. I ordered the base 16” two days ago with delivery from the 24th which kinda sucked but now quality reviews like this are coming through so this delay gives me time to rethink my configuration.

If you're doing anything RAM intensive in your VMs - definitely get 32GB. I'm struggling with low-moderate games on Parallels even with 12GB dedicated to the VM.

The M1 Macbook Pro is tapered at the edges, that's why it appears thinner. If you compare their thickness from the middle portion, then the M1 Pro Macbook Pro, is slightly thinner.

Honestly whats up with the height spec? I'm a little disappointed you didn't call this out. The 14" is clearly thicker. When you put both on a flat surface next to each other the 13" is shorter. How can they publish specs saying they are the same height? Where are they measuring from?

It doesn't need to be called out, because it's true. Apple reduced the depth of the rubber feet on the new M1 Pro which technically reduces the difference between the two (very sneaky on Apple's behalf). The M1 Pro also looks a lot thicker on camera because the chassis edges are flat and not curved like the previous gen. In reality (when you're actually holding both devices), it's really not a whole lot thicker.

@@MattViral Again, the edges of the previous gen MacBook are curved. That makes it look like the new one is much thicker when it isn't. I literally just went into the studio and put a ruler across the top of both laptops. The M1 Pro is BARELY thicker at the highest point (in the middle where the Apple logo is). There's nothing to call out haha, Apple has it's fair share of controversies but the height difference between these two MacBooks is not one.

It’s more that the published specs are clearly wrong or need a disclaimer that they changed how they measure. Because the listed heights are the same but one is clearly thicker.

Thanks for this amazing video, but I think it is not fair to compare the M1 8gb RAM with the M1 PRO 16gb RAM. I tested the M1 16gb RAM vs M1 PRO 16gb RAM (M1 pro of the 16” version, with 10CPU cores and 16 GPU cores) and they perform almost the same in my photographer workflow. If you have a chance to compare those two models it would be interesting because I’m sure you will notice that there are less differences. In my opinion, it is disappointing that they perform almost the same, but at least we have a lot of new features in the new versions that will make me keep the 16”.

Yes! So far i’ve not seen ANY reviewers comparing an upgraded M1 16GB/512GB 13” to the base M1 Pro which is what I’m deciding between. I’m a Graphic designer that uses PS, ID, AI and occasionally C4D, but in my country the difference between a refurbished M1 13” and a brand new M1 Pro 14” is almost 1k after AppleCare. Not really keen on the touchbar but 1k is a huge difference
