14 Days in the Saskatchewan Boreal - Part I

This trip takes place in East central Saskatchewan, Northwest of the border towns Creighton. SK and Flin Flon, MB. The starting/end point of this trip is just off of highway 135 at the outfitter Slim’s Cabins. It is a 2 week, 250km solo canoe trip with 34 portages and great fishing.
In Part I of the trip, I was running a little late, so I got Slims to shuttle me to the Mukoman River along highway 135. This essentially bypassed 2 portages and 12km of the route. From here I paddled and portaged up river to reach Ohoo (Cree word for "Owl") Lake. At Ohoo I found an almost ideal campsite and spent the night eating steak, battling bugs and listening to loons. The next day I made it to the head waters of the Mukoman River as I portage 4 times and lined my canoe twice to reach Mukoman (Cree word for "Knife") Lake. Due to the length of the next potage that accesses Belcher Lake (over 1 km), I decided to spend the night on Mukoman. Luckily I came across another amazing campsite with a great view.
So far, accounting for both days, I’ve only managed to paddle approximately 17km’s in total. My goal is usually to paddle around 20km’s per day, so I’m behind schedule to say the least! Back in 2013, I did paddle from Slims Cabin’s up the Mukoman River to Belcher Lake and cleared some of the route along the way. Apparently I didn’t do a very good job! I tried to not let it discourage me as I'm clearing the same portages again in the hopes of someone watching this might be encouraged to try this route. Just hoping I haven't discourage you instead.
I would like to give a big thanks to the Pelican Narrows and Sandy Bay band offices for helping me with the translations of the lake names. If anyone notices any mistakes please let me know! Sorry in advance for any mispronunciation.
Thanks for watching!

Loved the video, and the new introduction! I like how you deluded yourself and say, "I think I'll do an easy trip some day." Also, Diane says, 'You're cool."

Just found your channel, and happy I did. I used to work at a fishing and hunting lodge called Deerhorn Lodge on Attitti Lake just down from Belcher (its since burned down). I got to fish a lot of the lakes in that area Belcher, Attitti, Mukomun, Waskwei, Wild etc. Watching this brought me back to some great memories
@puddlejumper-sk
@puddlejumper-sk 4 месяца назад
Oh wow! That must of been amazing gig! Thanks for sharing! I was searching for information on the area and came across someone's (I think the owners) blog of about the lodge. It had a video of the lodge burning up at night. Crazy stuff. they never wanted to rebuild? I was going to go back in there this spring to do a fishing video but I'm not sure how much netting goes on back there. I know I found nets in Belcher and Nemei Lakes (didn't show it in the video) and just assumed they would net Attitti. Do you think its still worth going in there? I was going to take a week to paddle up the Nemei River to Nemei Lake, then go into MacArthur over to Belcher, down to Attitti, and head back to my starting point though Kakinagimak Lake. I was thinking of doing another video of all the small lakes just East of where Dearhorn used to be. Anyways, happy I could take you down memory lane. Its an amazing area I always love to paddle through. Thanks for watching! Cheers!
@mattfast7006
@mattfast7006 4 месяца назад
@@puddlejumper-sk yeah I think the video you saw was probably from one of the staff. They were thinking of rebuilding, but I don't think they ever got around to it. The owner also owns Kississing Lake Lodge and one or two other lodges (or at least did). In Attitti I don't think there was ever much netting going on. On Mukumon there was a little bit of netting...some big fish in that lake. Attitti was good for pike and lake trout, really big walleye too, but they were hard to find. There is a small lake just off of what we call Little Belcher, it's like literally a stones throw of a portage the lake is not named, but it kind of has a W shape...it has really big walleye in it. Gailbraith lake also has really good pike and walleye. If you get into Ewen lake that has a lot of walleye, like 100 fish days kind of thing, but they were all relatively small...eater size. Waskwei is a fun lake and the owners of Deerhorn/Kississing still run an outpost cabin on there. Wild Lake is just off of Waskwei and if you ever get into there it has good walleye fishing, but great pike fishing...there are monsters in there ,caught a 45" in there the last time I was there which was about 11 years ago or so. There's a bunch of other lakes we had boats on that we fished, but i'd have to look at a map to remember their names...I think we had boats on 10 different lakes or so if I remember correctly. I would love to get back up there some time.

Thanks Robert! I'm trying to build the videos like trip notes so other people will try the trip. If you want the historic trip notes there is a link in the description. The link will connect you to Churchill River Canoe Outfitters webpage. They took the time to post most of the trip booklets. As well, I just added a link to the description to where you can download the maps I use in the video. Its a Federal Government webpage and it moves kind of slow but it does the trick. It's an Wenonah Prism. I fricking love the boat. Its fast, good on open water waves and can haul enough gear/food for 2 weeks. It has no rocker, so if you get into anything over a class 1 it stats to get a little unstable. The seat is a sliding seat but I didn't find a way to make the seat higher, just had to train my knee's and ankles to be in that position for an hour at a time. Not going to lie, it can be a little painful at times, and I have to fight off the odd cramp in my foot, but I prefer padding in that position. Its more comfortable and stable.
