And what’s more interesting, his results are quite different from my own test on 14’ m3 max. I highly doubt his results. (Unplugged and high performance mode)I tested on my 14 m3 max unit. Cinebench 2024 is around at 1580, event hits at 1605. And 71 seconds Xcode compilation. Overall performance shows Merely no noticeable performance between 16inch and 14inch, but at cost of noise and battery life.

Always go for the 16 - i outlined the many reasons to do it in a video: the 16-inch MacBook Pro provides a larger display and more efficient cooling system, ideal for enhanced visual workspace and sustained high performance. Additionally, its longer battery life makes it better suited for extended use without frequent charging.

I used the 16" M3 pro for the last week and found the size to be uncomfortably big (via subjective criteria). Now on a binned M3 Max 14". My work comp has been a 14" M1 Max with 64 GB and I work on one of the biggest repos out there without any thermal or perf issues.

@@skafwadieI haven’t tested heating issues yet on the m3 pro, but the issue is still 14” chassis vs 16”. not only are there other reasons why 16 is better, but just for the cooling aspect of it alone, it will be more capable than the 14.

After three weeks of using a new 14" 16/40 M3 Max, I must admit that this is the best notebook I have ever used, and your review is misleading. I have a direct comparison to 14" 14/30, and the thermal management is almost the same to each other. In real life, all fans are off during the vast time of your work because the chip is so powerful that your work is done sooner than it hits its limit to start cooling. Even while gaming the AA title or under heavy load, I've never got more than 5200rpms. I would definitely recommend a smaller factor of 14" and 16/40 after my experience as a perfect choice for traveling. The performance is stunning!
@Novapopone
@Novapopone 2 месяца назад
that makes both of us! He ignored the fact that you can over ride the thermal throttling which is done for BATTERY LIFE not because the 14 cant handle it... a power user will set the system to HIGH POWER MODE not positive the actual wording... but i do know that the DEFAULT is AUTO... Myself id keep it on high power default myself and only switch to auto or low when battery life matters. Even plugged in this thing is going to use a ton less energy than all the macs ive used the past 2 decades. I think his review IS misleading but i have a hunch the guy just got out his geek toy tester kit and never checked the fact that performance was ADJUSTABLE! Kinda matters.... ive seen the 14 inch trail the 16 in most all my research but by razor thin margins.... like 15000. vs. 14988. really tiny amounts. He has some massive cliffs the 14 drops off and the more i think about it... thats exactly what would happen to the 14 when pushed super hard on AUTO SETTING!!! RU-vid.... you get what we paid for this review.... always cross reference

As much as I love what Apple accomplished with the "Apple Silicon," yeah, no matter what, at least for now, we ended at the same point... more power -> more heat -> a better cooling system. Just think about gaming, Apple is starting to explore, but this is so much different to render because a normal gamer expects the same performance for hours of gaming, and yeah, that's the reason why we have big graphic cards, big pc cases and better cooling systems 😢😢 but it's incredible what a laptop can do these days

I feel like in a stress test I would expect the smaller one, to get hotter and throttle more, surely thats a "given" though? Same reason desktops -> laptops. Be interesting to see a comparison with a real world task, rather than something designed to blow it up. Personally I've always preferred the 14, just find it more flexible and... it is a fair bit cheaper - the bigger screen, fans etc aren't free, worth mentioning that those things come with a $$ attached to them. It's also worth considering that the 14 with a cooling pad (which are very cheap), may be able to produce exactly the same performance as the 16.

@digitaldevigner4080
@digitaldevigner4080 10 месяцев назад
To be fair some users do prefer size and weight over a sliver of extra performance. It’s kind of a given a smaller less expensive model might be a tiny bit slower. Apple could have a dedicated chip just for the 14” that is slightly slower but they don’t. They give us the full chip and shorter tasks will be much faster because of it. The longer tasks are still insanely fast and the only thing really impacted are bragging rights. The 14” Max in no way is a bad but. It’s a killer laptop much more capable than the 14” Pro. The entire point of a laptop is to be light and small to take with you on the road. That’s important to a lot of users that do want to balance usability vs performance. Plus not every user is editing 8k raw video or gaming on a Mac. They could be performing a lot of tasks on the go where they want more performance but don’t want to lug around a larger and heavier laptop to get more performance.

👍Very informative, a huge thank you 👍 for this comparison using M3-max (top tier 16/40)! It follows the same pattern you identified for the M2-max (top-tier) 14" & 16" models. If you happen to have access to this laptop... I'd be very interested to see an addendum to add the ***14" M3-max (lower-tier 14/30)*** to the comparison to see if the lower CPU/GPU count would fit more neatly into the smaller thermal envelope and resolve the thermal 'bottleneck', as there is also a considerable cost difference between the 14" M3-max (14/30) and 16" M3-max (16/40). If the lower tier M3-max 14" 'fits' more neatly into it's smaller thermal envelope to enable it to fully utilise its CPU & GPU cores; then don't you think it would offer a very good value option for those who want portability (pehaps also use an external screen), don't need quite as much processing power but still need a computer for intensive tasks. 0.5kg difference in physical weight aside, the thing that I find heavier is the idea of carrying the larger 16" fully specified laptop about worth more than £4K in my bicycle pannier between meetings! 😧 Your review of the 16" M3-max (14/30) was really helpful in that respect.

@PDASEX 7 месяцев назад
With hours of research, I’ve come to realize the 16 Inch is the most logical choice with the M3 Max chip. The assistants at the Apple Store were very adamant about pitching the M3 Max 14 inch to me. I even ordered the M3 Max 14 inch online and my payment was put on hold because I forgot to give my bank a heads up that I was going to be spending a lot more than usual that day. While I could have just returned the 14 inch if I didn’t like it; I’m grateful that I continued doing further research on these MacBook variations even after I ordered it because it’s possibly saved me a lot of time, money and energy. Even though I appreciate the size and feel of the 14 inch, I realized that not going with the 16 inch would be an atrocity considering the price I’m already paying and the performance I seek to achieve with this machine. I’d be playing myself! I’m used to experiencing a hot dry climate, so I can’t imagine having to possibly deal with annoying fan noise from the 14 inch over working itself, struggling to keep the MacBook cool and operating at a max capacity, which limits the boundaries in which the M3 Max chip was designed to perform. I will be getting the MacBook M3 Max 16 inch instead. Besides, I’m looking for a durable machine that can optimize my tech experience with plenty of screen space to not feel limited on the go. With a longer lasting battery and a cooler running system; I don’t mind dealing with the extra weight and space of the 16 inch. For me, that’s a sacrifice worth the confidence of optimum efficiency. My goal is to feel empowered enough to ditch my desktop should I feel obliged to do so and to have a machine that provides the freedom to explore other technological abilities should new endeavors spark my interest.

Definitely happy I picked the 14-inch MacBook Pro M3 Max-it's just so much more portable. The 14-inch size is already a step up from my old M1 Air, and anything bigger like my old 15.6-inch Intel MacBook Pro from 2019 just kills the portability for me. If I ever need a bigger screen, I just hook it up to an external monitor. The 14 or 13-inch models are perfect for mobility; I can easily get work done in cafes or on train rides without any hassle. I never really hit any performance limits with real-life tasks; my CPUs hardly ever max out. This 14-inch M3 Max is like a small miracle of technology-a portable laptop that packs a serious punch. Plus, I can always switch it to low power mode when I'm on the move, and it becomes as quiet and efficient as a MacBook Air. Basically, the 14-inch MBP is a transformer: it's a MacBook Air when I want cool, quiet, and long battery life, and it turns into a beastly M3 Max when I need to power through heavy tasks that would drag on forever on an Air. When you go for the 16-inch, you lose this transformer ability. It just won’t fit in your sports bag or a typical backpack. How do you even bike around the city with a 16-inch? With the 14-inch, I can always have it with me and use any 15-minute break to chip away at my projects. I bet the 16-inch owners just end up leaving it at home. And if you consider a MacBook Air, sure, it stays cool and portable, but it starts to throttle under heavy loads because it doesn’t have a fan. And then there’s the 16-inch MacBook Pro Max-much heavier, bulkier, and a pain to carry around, especially if you put it in a protective case (which you have to, if you don’t want it to break). And what are you really gaining over the 14-inch? Just a bit of extra theoretical performance? Which, in real life, hardly makes a difference. The M3 Max 14-inch remains the most versatile option. You get high power when you need it, low power when you don’t, and you can always connect to a bigger screen at home. You get the best of both worlds-a powerful device that’s still super portable. (proofread with chatgpt for reader's pleasure)
@marceln2
@marceln2 5 месяцев назад
I’ve been running the 14 inch hard with photo imports and processing for hours over the past three days, and I haven’t heard the fan kick in once. Plus, I’m getting about 9 hours of battery life on low power mode, which is incredible. For those worried about battery life while on the move, here’s a tip: just drop a power adapter or power bank into your backpack. It's still way more portable than lugging around a bigger laptop. This way, the size of your laptop doesn’t increase, but you still get all the power you need for extended use. Honestly, the 16-inch might offer a bit more battery theoretically, but if you're never going to carry it around because of its size, what's the point? That's exactly why I switched from the bulky 15.6-inch MacBook Pro to the 13.3-inch MacBook Air M1 initially. The Air was always with me because it was so easy to carry around. Now, the 14-inch MacBook Pro M4 Max offers the best of both worlds: it’s powerful enough to handle heavy tasks and still portable enough to take anywhere. It's perfect for anyone who needs the power of a Pro but wants the day-to-day convenience of an Air.

@@marceln2 i dont think this reviewer set the 14 inch on high power mode for his benchmarking. Its nice to ignore battery life and some heat if you want too for a while and have the machine not slow down much or at all... apple knew the speed of this thing would make for desktop use as well and a little fan noise or heat doesnt matter to 90% of us. Ill be using Blender and very complex After Effects projects... so ill be pushing it. Lastly he also chose codecs on purpose that apple does not have accelleration for to tax the machine. That is mostly never done in professional settings with video work... were using pro res etc etc... so the video tests were a bit weak i felt. I also know maybe 1% of us in the industry in LA or film and television work... even use anything 8k... overall this guy seems well meaning and i liked his presentation... but luckily MY research included multiple sources before i purchased.... i will not be surprised finding out the number of people pushing the 14 inch max on heavy workload tests and DONT KNOW that you need to MANUALLY OVERRIDE the auto setting to allow the 14 inch to throttle little to none.

apple calculated that the TSMC N3B node would be better than it turned out, so now apple is in a precarious situation The MacBook Pro M3 has fewer transistors than the MacBook Pro M2, less bandwidth, fewer ports, worse fans, which causes problems with heat development so that the cpu throttles to name a few changes for the worse for the M3 chip externally, Apple made no changes to the MacBook Pro 2023 model when will my I mac get a major overhaul, the fact that this still uses a lightning cable for the accessories says something about how often apple updates its computers M2 Pro has 40 billion transistors, 200GB/s bandwidth M3 pro has 37 billion transistors 150GB/s of bandwidth Not the increase transistor density by about 33% compared to 5 nm TSMC states you should get "according to TSMC has stated that its 3 nm chips will reduce power consumption by 25-30% at the same speed, increase speed by 10-15% at the same amount of power and increase transistor density by about 33% compared to its previous 5 nm" but it didn't happen with the N3B node and it affected the M3 for TSMC N3B is not good but apple had no choice but to use this fuse.wikichip.org/news/7375/tsmc-n3-and-challenges-ahead/? The N3B node apple uses is far from fully developed so the TSMC N3B node is not much better than the M2 node which is based TSMC N5P even if apple wants the consumer to believe it and try to get customers to buy products based on TSMC N3B just because these are made on 3nm but an unfinished one with a bad prestandard That the N3B node had problems you could already see on the A17 pro chip, it doesn't come close to what TSMC states that the 3 nano meter node should be able to achieve neither in energy efficiency nor in performance and Apple's M3 chip is based on the A17 pro architecture Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 which, according to tests, has the same or better capacity than Apple's M2 chip Qualcomm Snapdragon is based on TSMC N4 nodes which are now well proven and have good yield as it looks now, the TSMC N4 node is no worse than the TSMC N3B node so that Qualcomm's new Snapdragon uses TSMC N4 is logical apple jumped on the N3 node too early with the consequence that this performs worse than what a 3nm node should do according to TSMC and what apple hoped for TSMC N3B has a very bad yield rate of just 55%, far below the standard which makes this extremely expensive to manufacture now Apple only paying for qualified circuits TSMC pay the rest TSMC sees it as a development cost to get a working 3 nm production with a reasonable yield rate technode.com/2023/07/17/tsmcs-3nm-yield-rate-reportedly-just-55-with-apple-only-paying-for-qualified-circuits/ when TSMC has better control of 3nm manufacturing and better yield, which TSMC will probably get with the N3P node that TSMC expects to come out in 2024 i had waited until apple release the M4 chip before i had upgraded to a new apple MacBook Pro and kept my M1 M2 I MacBook Pro these are enough for 99% of all users there are too few advantages to upgrade to an M3 machine at the price apple wants I also attach a video that shows how greedy apple is if they want they can have replaceable SSDs see below ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yR7m4aUxHcM.htmlsi=HZGHGS-jb8HO4Trc I'll end with something funny ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eKm5-jUTRMM.htmlsi=2Q_M6PGGXMaCasZj ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Z5HkmZp-96k.htmlsi=GWaVlVPuySgO26LI

I have a 16" M1 Pro MBP. Not upgrading this cycle. But, for portability I am truly thinking about adding an M2 MacBook Air to my collection. My 2nd choice would probably be a used 14" M2 Pro MBP. One thing is obvious from your video though--and I realized this from Day 1--the 16" M3 Max MBP is the ideal machine this year...if money is not an issue though.

16GB RAM & 512 GB SSD 15" MacBook Air here. It's pretty stellar. Nothing really stresses it. I exchanged it from my initial purchase of the 8GB/256GB 13" because squinting, some swap at lower ram, and the slow SSD was annoying. I bought an Macbook Pro 14 M3 Pro with only the 14-core GPU. I think I need a little more oomph for some games, but it actually performs fairly well overall. Nonetheless, I am not sure simply bumping it to an 18-core would be sufficient. I have been thinking about going to a 30-core GPU of the Max for gaming on this 14". The primary use case for my Mac is coding and other development work as well as general entertainment. I have a separate Windows PC for more dedicated gaming but wish I could use only Macs to do it all. We're not there yet, but performance is getting there. Anyway, I would love to see how the base model of the M3 Max chip performs on REAL world scenarios (as well as synthetics) for the 14".

As a car metaphor, let say that your max speed is 260mph but how often are you going that fast? Let's be honest here you are probably cruising most of the time but again, everyone is different.
