Hadji actually could do more than just snake-charming. He was good at misdirection and simple magic tricks which usually got him and Johnny out of trouble more than once.
My dad would always yell "Herculoids!" whenever he wanted the kids in the family to come to him. Man, being a kid in the 80s was prime cartoon and comics life. Syndicated toons from the 60s and 70s, the great toons of the 80s, my old man had comics from the 60s and 70s that I would read over and over....a great decade to be alive.
I loved the Herculoids, but my absolute favorite was Johnny Quest....such a fun and fantastic show. The Venture Bros is such a brilliant sort of spin off of Johnny Quest and is my favorite animation of all time.
Yean, loved Johny Quest, the music was sooo GOOD too !!! LOL. Bought the series on amazon for a good price, pulled the dvd set out it's box last nite, plan to watch a few episodes to night. Relive my childhood.
It's a shame VB didn't get picked up by HBO max. Kid of the 80's with Cartoon Express, 90's Teen and College with the Ventures. A wonderful timeline, most entertaining.
@@vikingvisigoth4384 Agreed! I truly loved everything about VB, for me everything was so well done. The violence was brutal but so funny.. Brock Sampson is my spirit animal..lol
@@justinm.791 I'm from New Jersey and the Patterson, Newark digs are spot on. Scare Bear is my Fav! I swear I'm the only Person in existence with a Shallow Gravy Tour Shirt. :)
I fell in love with The Herculoids, Space Ghost, Samson and Goliath, Mighty Mightor, and a couple of other titles. Thanks for this very interesting episode.
Alex Toth was an unbelievable force in The Superhero genre. A lot of people don’t know that Alex Toth created very elaborate and detailed drawings and backstories for every character he created while working for Hanna Barbara. Every Superhero, villain, and supporting character had a very detailed blueprint. Alex Toth basically created a Bible of information for all his characters. He also took his work and designs very seriously and wasn’t too happy when Hanna Barbara made parody spoof shows on some of his classic creations like Space Ghost Coast to Coast and Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law. In my opinion he’s one of the greatest artists to contribute to the superhero genre and He’s up there with the likes of Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, and Alex Raymond. It’s just a shame that most people who’ve seen his work have no idea who he is even though his creations have made him such an inspirational figure.
Mr. Alex Toth, envisioned SPACE GHOST, as a EFFING LATE-NIGHT TALK SHOW HOST, Ala Johnny Carson, or Steve Allen? What's the HELL, is matter with you? What in the world, have YOU been sprinkling on YOUR FROSTED FLAKES, while you were watching that TED TURNER inspired TRAIN-WRECK that's known as BOOMERANG?
Addendum! Please accept my most PROFOUND APOLOGIES! I swear! I read your comments regarding Mr. Alex Toth, and TOTALLY MISSED that he was disappointed with how his 'creations', had been so SAVAGELY 'UPGHFUCHTED' by WHO-EVER Mr. Joseph Hanna, and Mr. Wm. Barbera, left in charge at their cartoon factory! I tell you! The 'enlightened' individual(s) who came up with "Space Ghost: Coast-to-Coast" & "Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law", should be savagely "KNEE-CAPPED", FROM the NECK UP! But hey! That's jus' me! You understand!
True. Of course, it was originally seen as an animated update of the Depression-era radio show "The Adventures of Jack Armstrong the All-American Boy." But, of course, all that changed once H-B and Screen Gems/Columbia went into co-production for its one-and-only season in primetime (circa 1964)! And, while some episodes definitely foretold of things like video cellphones (aka the viewcom) and weaponized e-m-p (aka the Para-power Gun), other stories like "Shadow Of The Condor" (involving a crazy German air ace from WWI) are unfortunately outdated.
I always thought Herculoids was the coolest , most original , "superhero" cartoon ! With such awesome characters , I wish there would have been more development and longer run for this classic !
Might Thor Birdman Space Ghost Herculoids They all should’ve had more longer season and more episodes I like their team ups, when other characters goes to other shows, like a crossover series session
@kennethpage417 Man , I like those crossovers , too ! Of your list , there , I like Space Ghost best after The Herculoids . I thought his uniform/costume/suit was great . Also , his Ghost Ship and wrist power bands were really cool . I even thought Jan , Jas , and Blip were decent sidekicks (and I'm not crazy about sidekicks , lol ) One of the neatest things I remember was that "Inviso" power they all had in their power bands , and what a good effect that was (just showing main outlines in white, with no colors , to simulate invisibility. Hell , even the monkey could turn invisible ! Mightor and Birdman were ok , too . I thought the "modern" Harvey Birdman was hilarious . Not superheroes , but one of the GOAT cartoons from "back in the day" , which has held up , imo , is Jonny Quest - a true classic
@@jeffreese1828 there were some crossovers team up and I like that, it’s like sometimes the other hero is a special guest on the other show, vice versa
Forgotten?! Are you serious?! Many of these are among the most remembered HB cartoons. "Johnny Quest" is a true classic even among all cartoons in TV history.
The Mummy episode actually frightened me as a kid. Especially the end... "NO... NO! It can not be.... The spirit of Anubis walking, following me... Stay Away! Stay Away!' I LOVED IT!😁
I was born in 1960 and I grew up on these shows. I loved them all but Space Ghost was my favorite. I'm surprised most of them only ran for a year or two. The late 60's and early 70's were a great time to be a kid.
Marvelous video! 😆 I can assure you, I've NEVER forgotten these classic cartoons! Herculoids, Space Ghost, Mightor, Shazzan, Birdman, Fantastic Four, Galaxy Trio, Jonny Quest, MAN! 😳 Great memories...
I didn't forget them. Why because I was just a security guard for Hanna Barbara studios and grew see every cartoon from this studios. It was a blessing to know Mr Hanna and Mr Barbara until the last days. They were fantastic people.
@supermarioauto...I wish that I had the skills to remake Thundarr the Barbarian, The Pirates of Dark Water, and Where's Huddles. Those were three ahead of the curve cartoon series.
Johnny Quest and Space Ghost were badass. I've been waiting on a reboot of those cartoons or a live action movie on both for years. It's gotta happen one of these days.
Oh dear... You want to watch Venture Bros. At first it was a parody, then the writer learned cartoon network owned Hanna Barbera. So Johnny Quest all grown up gets weird.
Being a 9 yr old kid in 1966, I can't begin to tell you how much fun I had watching Saturday morning cartoon shows! I do want to point out, I watched "The Herculoids" on Saturday mornings, not on Sundays. Also, you left out one of my favorite cartoons... "The Fantastic Four!" They were part of the package that came out in 1966!!
My late brother and I grew up watching all these classic cartoons. I agree some of them were ahead of their time. Nicely done with this documentary. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
You forgot about Young Samson and Goliath, and Moby Dick. Don't forget about the Gobots, and Jana of the Jungle ,Sinbad the Sailor Jr and the Magic Belt.
GoBots toy's were the isssshhhhhhh cause in vehicle form it would have the undercarriage of that vehicle. Unlike transformers you'd see the damn robot.
Hanna Barbara adventure cartoons were great in the 60s, way before Star Trek! I'm 64 and I remember those cartoons on Saturday morning TV. It was great!
I say their Johnny Quest cartoon is still the greatest the episode with the Mummy still haunts me to this day, that and the spider robot. But I didn't know that they made Captain Planet. Hanna Barbera were such a giant part of my childhood.
Loved the trip down memory lane, but one note, the Superfriends format wasn’t cancelled, it was repackaged as “The World’s Greatest Superfriends”, “Challenge of the Superfriends”, and “Superfriends: The Super-Powers Team”. My favorite being “Challenge of the Superfriends” which included The Legion of Doom.
Yup at first there was Wendy and friends, besides the original 5 (Sups, WW, AM, Batsy & Robin) then the next season they added The Wonder Twins and Gleek, and then removed them included were Apache Chief, Samurai, Black Vulcan, Tornado, Hawkman & Hawkgirl, Flash, Green Lantern, Atom Man, Twister 🌪 (Challenge of the Super Friends with the Legion of Doom counterpart) Then on the last season Firestorm ,Zorro and El Matador was added (JL and their Legendary Superpowers)
@kennethpage417 Firestorm came on the 2nd to last season. Then on the last, they added Cyborg. No doubt a nod to how ABC didn't pick up the Teen Titans show pitched to them.
Mighty Mightor seems like a progenitor of He-Man. He has a magical weapon that transforms him and his pet into powerful heroes when they say a magical word. I can't believe I never saw that show. I would've loved it. The Herculoids and Space Ghost were some of my favorite cartoons as a young kid.
No. He was actually based on the Mighty Thor, Marvel's character (who came out in '62). The studio couldn't get the rights worked out for Thor, and they wound up tweaking enough details so that Mightor wasn't a total rip off of Thor.
@@AlexBabcock-hw9iz , the story line was there, you were just too much of a moron to pick up on it, and ditto for Thundarr the Barbarian. Also, another cartoon that could work, either as an actual cartoon, or a live action remade television series, that was, surprisingly enough, NOT an action filled series, would be the very rarely mentioned, or seen, Hanna-Barbera series that is called Where's Huddles. I would honestly get the people that made the television show Coach to get onto that project, and quick, if it was a live action television series.
The Pirates of Dark Water was truly a great show, I enjoyed it myself. I wish it wasn't cancelled, because I really wanted to see the pirates collect all the treasures and finally defeat Bloth and Dark Water. I also enjoyed Swat Kats and wish it was on this list too.
I remember every one. Hanna-Barbera ruled Saturday morning when I was a kid. 1967 I was 10. Ahhh Childhood memories. Johnny Quest was my favorite, Space Ghost #2, Up and atom, Atom Ant! But I loved them all. Saturday was the only day my mom did not have to wake me up, my butt was parked in front of the tv early with a bowl of cereal. Good times, unlike the garbage of todays cartoons. Ruh roh RIP William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, thanks for a great childhood.
Great video, though I'm surprised you didn't include SWAT Kats: The Radical Squadron. While it being a middle 90's show the themes character developments and animation made it stand way above all the other cartoons at the time. Too bad Ted Turner decided to pull the plug just as the show was reaching it's peak.
A lot of these cartoons came out in 1967 - 1968, which was the sweet spot for me. Note tha Bridman, Space Ghost, Mightor etc. were also re-shown in the late 1970s in the "Hanna-Barbera World of Super Adventure". That timing was great as the memory of my favorites was starting to fade - this show brought them back to life for me, I read the "Future Quest" series in it's entirety. I loved what they did for my favorite, Birdman. In the cartoons, he had a very limited supply of solar energy, and got very weak when it was depleted. The "Future Quest" series and the subsequent books focused on Birdman did not go there. Recharging was mentioned, but that was about it.
Note that in the "Future Quest" books that focused on Space Ghost, there is only one reference to the (overused in the cartoons) villain removing his power bands, and in that case Metallus indicated that there were safeguards that preventing him for doing that.
On another unrelated related note, I have thought that music from these series could be packaged in a manner similar to what NFL Films did with their music. Note that I mean something more than the opening/closing credit stuff. I mean the music that makes the action sequences of the cartoons cooler. I wonder if it even exists in someone's vaults any more?
@Aristophanes Garcia Did you like the way that Future Quest gave characters like Space Ghost and Birdman minor updates that avoided the overused stuff like "I've been away from the rays of the sun too long" and "I can't....reach....my power bands" from the cartoons? I sure did.
@Aristophanes Garcia Note that in the Future Quest books they also showed that Birman / Ray Randall can dematerialize his wings while keeping his powers
World of Super Adventure was how these shows got to me as they were shown in the early 80s on KTTV 11 in L.A. (just as the new weekday cartoon boom began).
In the 70s and 80s, my cousins and friends from the neighborhood would come to my great-grandmother's house to see the cartoons that Hanna Barbera produced. The television sets were still a luxury so we enjoyed as a group and as a family, beautiful times that will not return.
You kinda missed two important ones "Challenge of the Superfriends" in 1978 which way better than the 1974 "Super friends". It introduced the Hall of Doom which which were classic DC villains lead by Lex Luthor with much better story lines. Also the most underrated cartoon "Thundarr The Barbarian" in 1980 which is the only action adventure cartoon set in a post-apocalyptic setting that I can think of. One of the best settings for any action cartoon. You also missed the great "Planet of the Apes" cartoons they did in the early 1970's.
Thundarr was pretty good, but I was always surprised it wasn't even better once I saw who was in the credits -- Alex Toth, Doug Wildey, and Jack Kirby! And the Planet of the Apes cartoon was another Wildey project -- he felt it was even better than JQ!
Additional fact: The shows that were made in the 60's were reran in the 80's on USA Cartoon Expressed at Noon on Saturdays to end Saturday Morning cartoons if you had cable and the USA Network.
It always struck me how the Mighty Mightor was so obviously reworked in it's basics a few years later and was called "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe".
Actually it was probably Blackstar that was reworked into He-Man. Both were made by Filmation. There's even Blackstar easter egg sword in one of the episodes.
Very cool--I remember about half of these series, probably because I was born in '68, so I caught mostly reruns in the 70s. I was going to say, "What about Thundarr the Barbarian?" but looking closer, that was a Ruby-Spears production. They were former Hanna-Barbera writers, so at least they're related. One cool thing: many of the characters in that show were designed by Jack Kirby, and there is the stunning painting they use of Earth in the far future after the moon was torn in half and reformed. Great stuff!
Hell yes!!! So many great cartoons that I remember watching in reruns as a kid growing up in the 80s. Man I miss the days of non agenda action packed cartoons. Space Ghost, Johnny Quest, Herculoids... never will probably see the likes of again.
1:48 Moby Dick and Mighty Mightor 3:48 The Herculoids 5:46 Jonny Quest (NO IDEA how this can be forgotten) 7:25 Space Ghost & Dino-Boy (Who can hate that show?) 9:22 Atom Ant 10:59 Birdman 12:20 The Galaxy Trio 13:55 Dynomutt Dog Wonder and Blue-Falcon 15:36, Shazzan 17:17 Frankenstein Jr. and The Impossibles 19:12 The Powerpuff Girls (Again, no idea how anyone could forget that show) 21:00 Super Friends 22:42 Galtar and the Golden Lance 24:07 Captain Planet and the Planetteers 25:53 Popeye the Sailor Man (Okay, technically he's not a Superhero, but I guess you can because the Spinach makes him strong)
The Powerpuff Girls actually got a reboot, two of them, actually, one that was kind of a continuation of the classic show, and Powerpuff Girls Z. Also, where are The Pirates of Dark Water and Thundarr the Barbarian on this list?
"Forgotten" By whom? Younger generations that weren't even born when these aired? These videos and articles written by younger writers always say forgotten but these are remembered just fine by my generation thank you very much.
A few 60/70s Hanna-Barbera super hero toons you forgot to honorable mention: Young Sampson; Hong Kong Phooey; and Wonder Wheels. I used to get excited when thee shows would pop up on _USA's Cartoon Express_ and later on _Boomerang._ H-B *also* did some kick ass versions of Marvel Characters (The Fantastic 4).
*for me the absolute brilliance of the Roger Ramjet series was in the dialogue and the fact that Gary Owens also voiced the character was just an added bonus...sure the animation was super cheap and minimalist but i would love to have an animation cell to display on the wall of my living room*
@@kingpacman_9118 Oh good for you man.. Have your read the origin of Ghost Rider... well this channel has recapped that story. I mean Space Ghost.. not Ghost Rider...
I loved The Herculoids, Mighty Mightor, Spaceghost, The Impossibles, and Super Friends. These shows are all from before I was born, but because of my mom's work I sometimes had to stay up until late night and they would be on TV, they bring me so many good memories. I don't know a single person my age that watched these growing up but they are truly great.
Superfriends was not just a one season show...it lasted from 1974 to 1985 in verious shows and titles over the 10 years it was on the air. also the Popeye show was not new in the 1980's...there had been many Popeye shorts show in theaters and TV in early 50's and 60's.
Glad you included the Galaxy Trio. Sure I loved Birdman and Space Ghost and the Herculoids - but I always held a soft spot for the trio who didn't seem to get as much attention.
I remember growing up and watching just about all these cartoons back in the day. This was an era of great toons compared to the garbage that came after them.
To this day, when I wake up, I yell "Up and attem, Atom Ant!". My wife hates it. LMAO! Before cable, our local station used to show Atom Ant with Squiddley Diddley and the Hillbilly Bears. Great time to be alive!
On a side note I would add Ted Turner was a brilliant businessman. Instead of buying the rights to play all and any Hanna Barbera Cartoons on his network (TBS). He bought the entire company, catalog and exclusive rights. I am still Captain Planet fan to this day. Along with many of H.B. many other cartoons.
For me, *Space Ghost* has a special place in my soul as a jumping-off point to a much wider universe. At 7 years of age I had been a confirmed fan of the show along with *Frankenstein, Jr.* since they appeared together the year before (not knowing till many years later that they had actually premiered separately - and before I was born), and, not being familiar with much cinema, was a reluctant theater-goer. That spring, when my mother's elder sister came to our house bubbling over about the fantastic sci-fi film she had just viewed, she convinced me to see it by insisting that if I loved *Space Ghost* , then I was certain to love this George Lucas fellow's new production as well. She could always read me like a large-print book. 😄 🤓 🤩 😎
Most of my grade school days from 94-98 are filled with so much great memories from these toons. I'm 36 now but i still remember this vividly. Greetings from the Philippines.
The mighty mightor!! I forgot all about him lol...the Hannah Barbara super hero shows are still great to watch, especially Johnny Quest which had a couple of shows produced throughout the past 4 decades. I love all of these heroes! Good video!
As someone born in 1992 I'm proud to say I got to experience most of these wonderful cartoons. There's only 2 or 3 that I wasn't familiar with. All the rest were great dose of nostalgia.
being only 3 days as of this writing of my 64th birthday these heroes are among my life long favorites. Thank you for highlighting them and i deeply wish they would get another moment in the sun. Thank you for sharing
I'm a 50 yr old kid who can't have enough of cartoons. Love them! It's a shame even as adults people can't relate these to reality as every fiction work is actually reality fantasized.
I loved the Herculoids, thought Birdman was corny af as a hero but his turn as a lawyer was gold. However, Space Ghost was always my favorite. Not to mention his late night talk show, Space Ghost: Coast to Coast.
These were my favorites back when I was a kid in the 60s. Now I have downloaded most of the 60s superheroes including tarzan from the 70s wich is one of the best.
I would love to see a trio rock band come to life I would do a cartoon showing off their young years as kids getting their powers the live action starts the end of high school years to get to know the families local people and get you hooked on the characters building up into adulthood and then create enough episodes that pretty much tell you a full adult existence but definitely start with the cartoon to represent the younger years in their training and everything
