Loved everything and must add that this is the only channel where I read all the comments. It's like being a member of a team that's working together to help others reach their frugality goals.
I agree! Emmy's bubbly personality always brightens my day. She and Paul show that being frugal does not mean living a sad, dour life. Instead, you can have a lot of fun. But you have to plan ahead and make thoughtful decisions. I am trying very hard to learn to be more like Emmy and Paul. I really admire them.
For wedding showers I like to find a cookie jar at a thrift shop and fill it with baking ingredients like coconut, raisins, oats, chocolare chips, etc. I will often also add a few of my favorite cookie recipes.
How hubby and i save money might.sound counterintuitive. We buy all our household supplies at once. Cat food, kitty litter, toilet paper, cleaning supplies, laundry soap, feminine care,,hygiene, all at once. Especially if really bad weather is headed our way. We look at what foods we already have, and meal plan from that. Make coffee/tea at home rather than buy out. Save food storage contsiners, ziplock bags, reuse foil, wash sponges, Mend clothes until cant be mended any more, then cut into rags. Everything has multiple uses.
One frugal tip I have is I use the plastic grocery bag and put it over the 13 gallon bag in the trash can, and it saves on the 13 gallon bags. I love hearing all the tips.
I use one gallon ice cream buckets to save my leftover vegetable, pizza and spaghetti sauces in my freezer. When I get two buckets full, I make and can vegetable soup.
Just loved that beautiful cookbook! I canceled cable tonight. The operator told me she kept her Mom’s old dress from the 1970s and wanted to make a pillow out of it but couldn’t sew. I told her to look up your channel and your no sew pillow wrap video. Told her about your bread recipe. Took her 5 min to get back to canceling my cable. True story. Blessings back to you, Emmy & Paul.👍
Hi Emmy, thanks for the tips!! Here's a fun suggestion. U can search pinterest for 1950s recipes, retro recipes, grandma's advice to save $, best recipes from 1940s, and so on! So nice to have free recipes at hand, i remember early internet days - it wasn't that easy. Even while looking thru recipes saw banana bread sheet cake w frosting and German chocolate cake. As well as 1929 ish recipe for upside down pineapple cake!! Cute red couch BTW. Thx for helping us save!! 🍪🍪🍽
I don't understand how this is frugal. It seems to me like it is just wasting a plastic bag where one is not needed. It might efficient, but I don't agree that it is frugal.
Thanks for sharing the tips from others in the community. I am frugal too and have visited many youtubers, some boring, some fake and some not very frugal in my book, so I don't return. However, you are real and creative with your youtubes and they are edited nicely, making them very enjoyable to watch.
I agree...plus she isn't vegan. I watch a few other channels and they are vegan...and you are right about the not as frugal as they claim. But Emmys channels is so nice and down to earth. Love it.
Another frugal tip for a dryer sheets comes from the blessed memory of my neighbor Miss Betty. She said take an old sock or wash cloth. Wet it, ring out the excess water, put about a dime size amount of the liquid softener you like on the cloth, blend the softener into the fabric by folding it in half an swish the damp cloth around a bit. Put that damp cloth into the dryer and dry your clothes. Repeat this step for each load. After about five loads put the piece of cloth with the fabric softener into the wash with your towel or sheets to soften the towels and sheets. Begin this process again and repeat about every five loads. This method will give you close to the equivalent to 500+ dryer sheets+. This method gives you a double duty use of the fabric softener. No need to add the softener in the wash when using this method. Hope this approach makes sense
I love cutting my kitchen sponge so when it gets yucky, I throw it away. I love my small spatula! I saved this video for later to try those brownie cookies. :)
What great tips ! I love vintage cookbooks too. One of the best frugal cooking cookbooks I have is one from the UK, which let people know how to make the most of their rations during WW2 and other ways to feed their families healthy meals.
Wow! I am so enjoying watching “back” episodes of your channel! How exciting to find out I have the exact same 1959 cookbook you showed in this episode! My mom had the entire set of BH&G cookbooks! Over the years this Holiday edition is the only one that survived! It reminds me of my mom (who passed when I was 16) so it’s especially special. Love your channel! Thank you so much!
I also made your pasta dish tonight. I don’t remember which episode it was on but it’s so good! The capers really add to the flavor. I did add mushrooms (sorry, Paul) but they are my favorite veggie and I add them to everything! Please keep up the great work you are doing. I know I appreciate it so much!
Great tip to buy thank you cards for a shower and have the guests put their name and address on the envelope. Then use the envelopes to draw for a door prize. The guests do all the work addressing the envelopes and the guest of honor has less work to do. I also give stamps to accompany the thank you cards.
Emmy I have come to absolutely love you. I enjoyed the cookbook. I have collected old cokbooks for years. One of my favorite was written in 1912...How & Why to Cook. It's a hoot to read
Dear Emmy: I noticed that you always use charming bowls and plates and wondered whether you might do a video of some of your favorites in the future. My boyfriend and I love your videos!
Hi Emmy! I am the subscriber that that was eating Mike & Ike’s while watching another of your videos where you recommended not buying sweets to save money. Next story: the other day I was looking at a receipt and trying to figure what what we had spent $6.98 on at Walmart. I figure to be nearly $7, it must be a household item. Nope, it was Dove chocolates 😂😂😂
Wonderful video! Thank you Emmy! I adore the vintage cookbook! I miss my growing up years and the simpler way of life! Am going to work on living more simply..
I have a frugal tip, you can make your own brown sugar at home. In a mixing bowl add 1 cup white sugar and 1 teaspoon of molasses for light / 1 cup white sugar and 2 teaspoons for dark. Mix with mixer on low speed for few mins. then store in a tightly covered container. I store mine in a mason jar. There is other recipes to make larger amounts too. Thanks so much for sharing. Take care and be blessed.
some stuff in the dryer doesnt need fabric softener-bath towels and dish towels-fabric softener actually interferes with absorption of water from your body or plates- and that bear in commercial on top of towels is just mit and his job is to sell you fabric softener
I have two sets of children’s cooking tools (a spoon, a spatula, and a brush) I used these to get the last bits out of jars and tubes. One set in the kitchen One set in the bathroom. It’s amazing how much is left in jars and tubes that look as if they are empty. The small size tools get the last bits out of corners that larger tools can’t reach.
Another excellent video, ty! It would be great if you could start your videos off with a tip or two each time to keep us on our toes! Another tip: If you clean your mirror with just water and a rag and dry it with a towel, your mirror will look just as sparkling clean as if you used windex. I never get streaks.
This is true. I have gas wall heaters and they cause my mirrors and windows to have a bit of film on them. I find using hot water cleans them better and keeps them cleaner longer than if I used Windex.
Great ideas! I do not use kitchen sponges but I cut my steel pads (the scrubber things with soap in them. like brillo or SOS) into halves or quarters, depending on the job. It also sharpens the scissors. A washer repair man told me to use about an 1/8 of detergent of what the product says. Makes it last forever and the clothes get clean without residue. If you find your dishes aren't getting clean in your dishwasher (there's food stuck on) take out the sprayer arms and dunk them in hot water to flood them, There are usually bits of food that block the holes. Also, clean out the filter most of them have. It saves repair expense for them to do the same thing! I put them in a bathtub and flood them and then run til the bits are out and water flows freely. Thanks so much for all you do!
Another great video both, thanks for sharing 👍 Another frugal hack ithat I picked up from Kim on 'Free to Family' is re-using the net bags that onions and other fruit and veg comes in, cutting them into pieces and using them as dish scourers/clean the oven. They're especially good if you need something that's a little abrasive but no so much that it damages the surface- Btw those cookies looked super yummy 😋
I made the chocolate cookies and used bits of dried cherries instead of nuts. Big hit with everyone! I had about eight ounces of the batter left, so I froze it and will thaw and bake when we have a yen for chocolate.
Hi both Sometimes I cut my sponges in 8 All jobs need different sizes Cookies look amazing And the book is the best We have free magazines here in the UK at some supermarkets and yesterday I picked one up and it had a wonderful recipe for cheese and onion scones so easy we had them with cream cheese on and I made home made soup I also made a biscuit refrigerator cake so yummy Love to dixi xx ❤❤
Awesome cook book, I love it. Growing up in the 50 & 60 were so much fun. Even though my brothers both got Polio in 1954 we had some fun family times with very little. My Mom could stretch a penny!
@@FrugalMoneySaver yes she was. I’ll be 68 in May lost my job due to Covid, hubby 73 still working. My Mother and Grandmother’s canning, preserving and inventive and scratch cooking have really helped this past year! I love your channel you and Paul help us see you can retire and live a fulfilled retirement. I live in Pennsylvania where there are plenty of taxes, however we do have a lot of farmers which helps to keep food costs down in the Summer months.
This is what I absolutely enjoy and relish about your channel. The wholesomeness, real and connected attitude which you both exude. I feel like I am spending time with my tribe.🤗
My all time favorite cookbook is McCalls (green hard cover from the 70's). First one I purchased and not knowing how to cook (mother was a terrible cook) it showed me everything I needed to know from measurement meanings, roasting times, high altitude directions and many recipes I still use today. The front cover was lost along the way but it is still my favorite dog eared and all. Have a wonderful week.
I do the dryer sheet thing - I also use reusable dryer sheets. I will now be cutting my sponges BUT I also like hand knit type of cleaning supplies I can wash or rags.
Love all your videos. We have young children and both work, it feels like we are always rushing around and not too mindful with some of these tips. We are really trying to be more frugal in the way we live. Your videos are so encouraging! Thank you 😊
The tips were great. The brownie cookies I am going to make when my son and I drive to my daughters wedding in May. I collect cookbooks and older Pyrex. My daughter is collecting very slowly Butterprint Pyrex. Very expensive but buying it slowly is good. I go to our thrift stores every week to check it out. . Love your channel.
Sheryl I keep announcing your name in my last two videos and leaving you comments. You won the $20 Walmart gift card! Please email me your address so I can mail it to you. Please reply to this so I know you’ve seen it. Thanks so much and congratulations again.
Every time I get family requests for store bought cookies, I search your videos for easy recipes. We'll definitely try this one, and I bet it will get great reviews. Thanks for reminding us to use what we have on hand! Since finding your channel, I've become much better at using every speck of food we buy or grow. If we can't use it at peak freshness, we'll freeze or share it with others. Thanks!
@@FrugalMoneySaver I've been doing it for over 40 years and never had a problem. In general, my butter wrappers are paper, but I have used an upside-down Kerrygold wrapper without anything bad happening. If I need a large sheet of paper to line something, I use a cut-open flour bag, and grease that when it's in place. My mother saved every flour and every sugar bag for this purpose!
I make homemade baked tater tots from potatoes. I lightly bake them and freeze and then when I want tater tots w/ dinner, I can take some out and then put them in the oven to reheat. I really like how these come out. Healthier than fried and so delicious.
Will definitely be making those cookies... during the holidays I make toll house cookies and added milk chocolate..semi sweet chocolate chips ...chopped toffee...white chocolate chips and crushed pretzels. Delish you should try it 😊❤️
Thank you for sharing the cookbook, recipe and the tips! A positive outcome of the last year, was learning how to live more frugally, and more simply. I like seeing all of your vintage items! Have a good weekend, and Happy Spring!
Those are great frugal tips. Those cookies look so delicious and decadent. That cookbook from 1959 is the same year I was born and looks so interesting. There’s something about vintage books and items that I just love and I find it comforting maybe because it reminds me of the good old days when times were simpler. Thank you for sharing Emmy I’m sorry if I spelled your name wrong. You can correct me👍❤️
Another great video. Ty! I was thinking that ur background music should be Paul playing the blues! Also I use an app called Acorn. It takes the difference between the price and the next dollar up and collects it and invests it. Plus I had $5 a week going into it and I just upgraded it to $10 week. I am up over $1000 and I never missed that money at all.
That particular brownie mix is my family favorite. I will try that recipe. I love all your vintage bowls and things. I have my mom's pyrex bowls from the 70's. I use them all the time. Thanks for a great video!
What wonderful tips! I like the baggie in the measuring cup tip. Those cookies look so tempting. I had that cookbook at one time but I needed to downsize my cookbooks because I was moving. At one time I was collecting all those individual cookbooks because I thought it would be something I could also use.
Thank you and your subs for lots of good frugal tips. I copied the cookie recipe for a time when I’m not dieting and/or when I’ll have a crowd to share with. My husband might eat one cookie, but I don’t want the temptation for myself ☹️. I’m making banana bread tomorrow and already promised the loaves to a friend and my MIL. I have the fun of making it, but not the temptation of having a loaf in the house.
@@FrugalMoneySaver Lol. I’m not that strong! That’s why sweets aren’t safe around me. My husband likes chips/dips and buttered popcorn as snacks and I’m not into salty things. He drinks Diet Coke every day, too. I drink tea or water.
Salty snacks are my total weakness. I no longer keep chips in the house for that reason. I could take or leave sugar but give me a can of Pringles lol!!
Excellent video as always. The cookies looked amazing! I can’t wait to try them. This morning I was up baking lemon cookies from a cake mix at 7:30am. The simplest cookies always get the most compliments! Loved the tips and the cookbook. I am going to keep my eyes open for it when I start thrift store shopping again!
To go along with the cards and stamp box... Think about postcards and postcard stamps and it will be cheaper. Postcard stamps are cheaper then letter stamps. ( at least they were the last time I bought them) I don't think many people know this. Next: you can often ad a bit of water to a jar like say a pasta sauce jar, put the lid on and shake it up...this is what I do instead of the spatula idea. I also do it for cans of tomato sauce...I empty 2 cans...fill one with water and pour them from can to can til all the sauce is off the side of can. Another tip: I stopped buying swifter dusting sheets to put on my floor swiffer and now I use the used dryer sheets on my swiffer dust mop. They fit perfectly and pick up great. I am also no longer buying the swiffer wet jet refills because they cost a lot and are not refillable. I bought a refillable mop that also uses washable pads...no more wasted money. I know a bucket and water and regular mop is even cheaper but I can not bend and I can not lift a bucket of water... Another: Plug things into a power surge protector with an on off switch and turn everything off without having to unplug each item. And turn it off when you are not using them. Just a few....I hope you like them. Really love your channel. I must say I am surprised when I see your sales ads...I always heard it was so expensive living in New York city.
Great tips! I do not live in New York City I live in NY state. I live north of New York City in the Hudson Valley area. The City is about 1 1/2 hours away. We basically live in the country.
@@FrugalMoneySaver and I should have known with all your lovely videos of your walks and drives. I'll bet it's just as lovely even not covered in snow. I just watched a bunch of your videos...love the one where you and Paul made pizza and cinnamon sticks. Yum.I am not a huge pizza fan cuz it's too expensive and if I get the cheap one, I just don't like it. BUT I love the garlic ranch chicken pizza they have at Papa Murphy's take and bake and my favorite grocery store has them too. I go place the order, pay 1.00 extra to have them cook it for us and then go shopping and when done shopping, the pizza is cooked and ready to pick up as we leave the store. The store is Winco. It is my favorite.
I too...along with others, enjoy reading the comments. Emmy and Paul have touched so many people..over 10K...and many don't probably subscribe.... Looking forward to your gardening tips too now that spring is here..... Mango tree from a seed? I have lots of Avocado trees from seeds...am sprouting lemon trees too...a video on some of your seedlings, cuttings etc??? Just a thought.....maybe?
Sheryl you are so kind! Thank you! Yes, we will be showing all our gardening hints/tips/seedlings etc. We start a bit later than a lot because of our climate. We've been cleaning our plant beds and getting excited to begin! See you tonight LOL! Thanks again!!
@@FrugalMoneySaver Wow..excited and happy to see you too...tonight..ha ha..... I do want to try growing some other plants from seeds like the mango...and propagate different plants...succulents, roses, house plants etc...they make fun frugal gifts....
