I probably spent more time on this episode than any oth Daily Drop. If you're interested in some of the workflows and also current issues using Log in Blackmagic's Camera App (with a solution), this is the one for you.

Thanks Memo! The only time it got toasty for me was when I was setting it up. iPhonedo has dine extensive tests and it seems that the Instagram app is causing much of the overheating issues. Hope you're well!

I'm not sure but some of the lack of quality could also be in general use of the front camera for some of your test? I would assume the front camera would suck vs the back. The outside stuff was that front or back camera?

Front camera. Could be part of it but it is the camera I use a lot for content. I'll be doing more tests going forward with rear facing.

@@theC47 yea please do because almost no content creators use the front camera. I'm android so it didn't matter for me but my wife uses the iPhone and has a 15 pro now.

Also there's an issue with the hdmi out. Connecting any usb-c to hdmi (even usb powered, tried a few), the hdmi output works but then it disconnects. Using any other app or iphone UI the hdmi output works, while with the blackmagic app sometimes the hdmi drop. Not sure what's going on, hope it's a software thing

Oh. I didn’t seem to have any issues but didn’t use it prolonged periods of time. I did notice when clean HDMI was unchecked though that I didn’t see the UI which I thought I would.

It is not, however, the same as the Apple Log Monitor LUT that is built into FCP which I would porefer to be using but doea not seem to be available anywhere. Try underexposing in the native camera app, to keep iso as low as possible. I think you may get more similar results then. This is what I have gathered from other videos as well, you have to underexpose to keep noise down.

I think it's worth trying but generally "exposing to the right" (on a histogram), or to the top (on a waveform monitor), yields much better results when you get to post as you are adjusting the image down. This tends to produce cleaner images overall as long as you don't clip your highlights. Also, many cameras that shoot Log do better at 800 ISO and above interms of giving you the most dynamic range above middle gray (which give you more stops in the highlights). Over time we will start to learn where to rate Apple Log on iPhones in terms of best practices but overall I wouldn't underexpose in most cases as if you then want more exposure n post the noise will rear its ugly head.

Based on using digital cinema cameras, DSLRs and mirrorless cameras for over a decade I haven't found that to be the case. In general, unless shooting ALEXA or possibly Venice, exposing to the right using ISO is a sound way to expose an image. It may turn out to be different for the iPhone shooting Log. BMD will solve this LUT discrepancy. The real question is “Will log h.265 be good enough for most users?’ I vote yes.

They have and I address that in my latest episode: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-60Qa1nosA6k.html I think so as well but people will also have ProRes as an option is h.265 isn't cutting it for them. I shoot Log in h.265 on Fuji cameras and get great results. The 10 bit 4:2:2 part is important in that equation though.
