I have done OMAD since April 2022. I guess that's a 24 hour fast every day for nearly a year. I wake up and eat all my food immediately, nothing else the rest of the day. I've gone from 292lbs to 165lbs in 11.5 months. March 1st will be my one year ketoversary. I couldn't be happier with the results and not worrying about lunch or dinner is a plus.

Warm water is the safest but it doesn’t give any mental boost, and black coffee is bad for the tummy long term. So I googled and ordered Kaged mindset which contains caffeine. I also exercise more on my fasting weeks. Less hard workouts & more walking on my none fasting weeks. My periods have been normal and I’ve lost 23 pounds in 2 months.

I make a cacao cream coffee hot beverage morning with vitamin supplements. Left over beverage is sweetened with Monk Fruit erythritol and frozen as a slushie for my 5PM supplements. I try to eat only when there's daylight. I've been running blood sugar about 83 (A1C = 4.9 - 5.0), and for the last three weeks ketones between point 8 to 3.3, mostly above 2.0. I do 16:8 (I upped my time restricted eating from 14:10 to 16:8) 6 days and on Sundays or Catholic solemnities don't restrict time and eat a little more. The key to my making 16:8 work is to not overeat during the eating window. I eat what I want and it works for me (I remember also a bagel a day on weekdays and it worked for me. It's because fasting is also a religious practice for me) I am an XS, size 0-2, 103 lbs., 20.1 BMI, 33"-22.5"-33". It works for me just as your method works for you (I stopped listening to all the fad videos about studies here, studies there, whichever diet is the latest craze [seems carnivore is these days. For me, 16:8 or 18:6 does nothing for me, but the Tuesday after my 48-hour fast shows 3-6 pounds lost. That is 3-6 pounds lost since my last post fast weight (the day or two after my last 48 hour fast or basically, the lowest weight during that week). I can still do cardio and weight resistance training throughout the week, except during my 48-hour fast, where I only do 3 miles of biking per day. Maybe I won't do a 48 hour fast this weekend. Maybe I should do 3 weekends of fasting, and take one week off. Trick my body.
@mat3155
@mat3155 Год назад
I did the bulk of my reading on alternate day fasting, 24 on 24 off, and intermittent fasting back in 2009/2010. Most of the information was about health and longevity more so than fat loss. One thing I'm surprised no one seems to really emphasize is keeping your body guessing. Back then it was stressed that if you were doing IF you needed to move you feeding windows around in order to maintain the benefits. Autopahgy is a survival mechanism. Repairing and utilizing damaged cells instead of disposing of them and replacing them through mitosis. As I recall when you constantly feed your body gravitates to mitosis instead autophagy because it requires more energy thus helping the body to utilize that constantly flowing source of energy. When you cut off that constant feed your body basically goes into oh shit mode. Your body is however a machine aka circadian rythym and eventually will adapt to the new feeding schedule hence the need to change your windows periodically or incorporate full feed days much like the burst fast in this video. As I understand it however the circadian rythym is a 24hr clock and therefore alternate day fasting is not something your body can particularly adapt to so you should be good there I attempted ADF, and while it sounds daunting it gets pretty easy to do over time. I couldn't consume enough calories to gain the weight I wanted. Another issue that I haven't noticed discussed much is the digestion of meals. Meals take time to digest and slowly bleed calories into your system over hours of time. If you're doing a 16:8 IF and you eat a large meal at the end of your window you're essentially doing yourself a disservice as you won't actually be in fasted state for 16hrs. Not a huge deal but suboptimal. Obviously I haven't watch all the video our there that the Tube has to offer but so many that I have never touch on these points and they're important ones IMO. It's been a long time since I've read studies on the subject but I figured I'd share

Thanks for all of this info @Mat This is how I have interpreted various sources of information. I like the emphasis on what works for you in this video. I have to eat with meds 3 times a day and post-menopausal, so adds some dynamics. And different genders respond differently to IF.
@iloled2924
@iloled2924 Год назад
The last part of what you said, about the time of digestion is kind of redundant. Virtually all of the discussion regarding fasting and feeding windows already has inherently built into it the assumption that we are talking about eating versus not eating. You’re not “doing yourself a disservice” by eating at the end of an 8 hour feeding window, you’re simply doing the 16-8 fast. If you finish your last meal at the 6 hour mark, then you’re doing 18-6 fast. You’re still considered in the beginning of your “fasting” even if the food is still moving through your digestive tract. Obviously you’re not getting any significant of the therapeutic, anti aging, autophagy related benefits during the first few hours of a fast, after your last meal, no matter what type of fasting you’re doing.

Love the content Thomas! Could you do a video, or couple of videos on pairing workouts with fasting. Is there any value to doing intense leg workouts while doing a 36 hour fast, or what about a specific cardio type during fasting. I typically fast on rest days, dunno if that's a good idea... Would love to hear more. Maybe you already covered this, I'll have to go back and look. Other ideas - Recipes for fiber. Maybe ones that are specific for soluble and insoluble? - What a day of food looks like from an optimal fiber perspective. - Strategies/food to firm up bowel movements. So much fiber information focuses on constipation but not the opposite. I eat carnivore/Mediterranean but things seem to run right through me. - Quick 20 tips with links to your other videos of I want to learn more. An example, I haven't been able to eat oatmeal for 20 years because it makes my blood sugar crash. You suggested refrigerating it to lower the insulin response, and it worked! Its been a game changer for things I can eat. If you have a list of hidden gems like that, that'd be great. Thanks man!

@Shelf Cloud I did IF 18/6 lost weight then after 7 months slowed down, then to a plateau at 10 months. I now changed up my IF from 3pm to 4:30pm with 2 meals a day of protein, vegetables, whole foods 5 days a week. I recently started doing cardio, with some weight lifting, steam room 3 days a week at the gym in a 'fasted state'.. I walk 10K-12k steps a day at work 5 times a week. Seems to be starting the metabolism again.

I've been doing IF and Keto for 10 months and working out 6-7 day a week Resistance training 4-6 days a week sometimes with eliptical cardio and riding 12 miles on my mountain bike on the days I don't go to the gym. I started April 2022 at 250 lbs and now at 205 lbs. My weight loss is now almost at a standstill. However, I am still seeing changes in the mirror and showing visibly less fat. I'm guessing that recomposition is still going on. I have resolved to keep on doing what has gotten me to where I am now. eventually over time as a lifestyle change, I should get to where I want to be which is around 185 lbs. rough calculations show this should have me somewhere around 15% body fat. At 63 I realize I just have to work that much harder to achieve the results that would have come far easier and quicker 20-30 years ago. It's all about perseverance.

If you perform a lengthy fast make sure you start with a little bit of protein at first. The reason prisoners at the Death Camps died right after starvation was because they were given carbohydrates, which spiked insulin and caused their hearts to become extremely stressed.
@littlepotato2741
@littlepotato2741 Год назад
So close. It's called refeeding syndrome. The main cause of death is the lack of electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium) during the fasting period. Your body works very hard to keep those electrolyte levels stable in your blood as they are needed for many everyday bodily functions (such as proper heart functioning.) When you fast for a long time, your body will take those electrolytes from the individual cells to keep the blood levels stable (basically similar how the body will use fat for energy when fasting.) Obviously, not spiking your insulin when coming off fasting will help, but the key element is not doing long fasts without getting your electrolytes. It is extremely important to get your electrolytes during any fast that lasts more than a few days. We need to address the cause which is the electrolyte depletion because you always have insulin in your bloodstream. The pancreas makes basal insulin on a schedule, not dependent on the glucose level. Obviously, high glucose will cause the pancreas to pump out more insulin to drive the glucose down, but you always have some level of background insulin. It's easy to get your electrolytes. First, I buy a magnesium tablet because I'm lazy and it is very convenient. Secondly, buy some "50% low sodium" salt at your local grocery store in the spice aisle next to all of the other salts. "Low sodium" salts replace a portion of the sodium with potassium making it perfect for electrolyte supplementation. And it is dirt cheap. Get some water flavoring and fill a clear bottle with a mix that you can sip on through the day. Trust me on needing the flavoring - you don't need much, but you will need a little if you want to drink it every day. You want to drink this a little bit at time throughout the day. It is too salty to drink quickly. Your body can't process water that is too salty and it will just flush it out the other end. This ultimately will be a net negative as it will pull both good and bad out with it... you will not get any benefits of either the water or the electrolytes. This is how people drinking seawater die of dehydration. There are some limited benefits to doing this "salt water flush" infrequently during a long fast as it will "fill the role" of fiber in helping to push out all the stuff in your intestines. But salt water flush shouldn't be done more than once a week and you need to understand that you will need to compensate with more water and electrolytes during the rest of the week to make up for the salt water flush. Personally, I also like to add a multivitamin, vitamin D (with K), and a vitamin B-complex. The multivitamin is to cover any gaps that my body might need. The vitamin D is for my immune system and overall health. The vitamin K with the vitamin D is to make sure that make sure that calcium ends up in my bones, not my organs (not a huge issue during fasting, but this is the one that I take every day.) Vitamin B-complex is to help your body and if you look at the longest fast done, it is one of the vitamins that the doctors had that gentleman take.

This most recent Thomas DeLauer youtube video was in my recommended feed eerily less than 8 hours after I was thinking of changing my eating habits to the timeframe that I would eat my food which I see as a positive confirmation. However I confess that the secret to my success relates to both the types of food I consume coupled with the amount of food I eat at least 4 to 6 times a week that allows me to choose whatever intermittent fastng window I choose to do while still sometimes indulging foodwise albeit doing so carefully. Even when my personal viewpoints differ on what works for me diet and exercise wise, I still keep an open mind to accessing Thomas DeLauer's videos to broaden my horizons data and viewpoint wise because a significant amount of data he shares in the video is both thorough and at times persuasive.

This is one of your 1st videos that seems to have skewed data and left me confused. You said that the 18:6 group ate at 12pm, 4pm, and 8pm which would actually be less than a 16 hour fast at the end. So I'm not sure what to make of the 5 day burst or quite how to execute it. Meaning should I do a 16:8 5 day burst like the study suggests or 18-6 burst like you were saying? Again I can't thank you enough for all the you bring to the table with these videos. You are literally the best when it comes to analyzing data logically and adapting and adjusting to new data. I swim 3-4 times a week around 1.5-2km and walk 3-4 times a week for at least 1 hour. Consistency over time is more important than anything else. What you eat is also important when you are trying to lose weight but you also need to enjoy life and make sure it is something you can do long term. Crazy hardcore fasting will simply not change your habits and lead to yoyo weight loss/gain and metabolism issues.

Uma pergunta: esses estudos levaram em consideração uma pessoa que pratica atividade física de resistência? Levantar pesos? Ou somente jejum sem atividade física?

I'm new to this fasting and the past few days I've been doing about 20 or 21 hour fasts and eating twice at the start and end of a 5 or 6 hour window, feeling good cheers

i'm starting to get myself into fasting now after 2 weeks of Keto. I want to do option 1 OR option 2 but when you say 4-5 days of OMAD (burst fasting) I get that but then you said take 3 weeks off of fasting--what would that look like?

OMAD 23:1 for 6 days out of 7 Last day you fast the entire day until next eating window the next day. That gives you a 48 hour fast weekly. I do this and build muscle and stay under 10% body fat. You’re welcome.

My novice two cents thinks taking 3 weeks off would wreck our discipline and increase insulin resistance. Is there a study on this 3 week break ? Wish we could stop quoting Einstein, it's getting insane.

I don't believe your IR would increase just by stopping fasting. If you are eating a ketogenic diet or keeping a low-carb diet you can fend off IR still.

@@dawnbourque7974 I saw your other comment what does 3 weeks look like. I thought I missed the explanation in this video because he quotes so many studies. I know your body will tell you when is enough, but you need longterm discipline. He actual does state that too, that results improve. There are many psychological, physical life experiences humans may go through not easily measured in rats.

16 to 8, 17 to 7 for me with healthy eating for 2 years at the age of 62 and my weight is similar to when I was in my thirties. I don't count calories and my weight stays consistent. I don't do intermittent fasting to continue to lose weight but enjoy the fact that I don't put it on and it is easy to do. I don’t need to vary the procedure because there is another study.

I'm usually doing the 18 hour fasting, but confused why we should stop for 3 weeks and then do again. Maybe I didn't understand something. And I really should try to be in a deficiency as well.

I believe it is because if you are constantly doing 18 hrs and not changing, then the body will regulate your metabolism down, and begin to use less energy.
