My INFP kid definitely feels out of place most of the time, lives in her head really. Yet she's the most empathetic person I know, and has a very high emotional IQ, understands everyone's feelings and unfortunately takes them on. It's normal for us INFJ, we always see and feel the both sides on all things. One of our names is the advocate, consellor. It goes well with hamony and balance I find. Observing and analysing. Hum maybe that's why we struggle on who we are. Fit everywhere and nowhere. Yes we INFJ are weird. Genrally I don't go or engage conversation first with people, because I think they are surely not interested by me. But if they talk to me, I am pretty ok to continue the conversation. And same as you, if someone want know me, just ask. If someone don't ask, I just think he is not interested. What do I think, what do I want ? humm I don't care. Want to know what other think, want. As if we just want to observe and analyse, to maintain hamony, as if we were omnicient ?

I like the INFP take, especially since wisdom and insight are qualities our type doesn't often get credited with - they're typically so heavily associated with INFJs - though we can often seek/have these things as well, in our own way. I think the main difference is that most of us don't have as much of that need to guide/influence people and are more prone to keeping our insights to ourselves (we're also less likely to *define* ourselves or our worth by our ideas/insights, or our contributions to others, since we have a strong sense of self separate from all that, for better or worse). But I do agree that they are worth sharing. In my case, it also helps that I've been through a lot of crap in my life. I definitely feel most qualified to speak on things I have personal experience with, or have studied extensively. Occasionally I'll get one of these "I need to share my insights with the world!!" flare-ups where I will dump the contents of my mind all over the place - and then it quiets down and I go back to doing my own thing. I'm often more comfortable doing this in writing, where I can express myself more easily and where people can choose freely whether to read or not. I agree that being an outsider can give one a sense of perspective that it can be hard for 'insiders' to have. I embrace my outsider status for this and many reasons.

I love the INFP tree house metaphor! It's very fitting. It provides a safe vantage spot to observe other humans at a distance. Sometimes we come down, too. Seemingly random energy levels... the kind of person who'll suddenly finish a 1000-page book in a weekend. It's so interesting thinking about personality contradictions. ENFP here. I think this "darkness" some people see in our personality type is because we're people readers. We can see through people. That meaning we see the true colors, which is usually a grey area. No one is all bad or all good. We have this tremendous amount of hope for people, despite knowing they've capacity for evil. This comes from our future, present and past vision. At least for me, my Ne doesn't only make me see the future possibilities, it makes me inter-twin them with the past and the present, we notice the moves(shifts) in people's personalities others usually don't. We see what people were, are and what they could be simultaneously. All of this comes with a price. We want to share as well as we want other people to share all of our sides with the world, but we think the world won't accept that (and it usually doesn't). At least in my perspective, growth is subjective, as most things in life. And we can never completely shut off what we know (after we've seen all the darkness but also all the light). It actually drains you, and that's when our stressed out dark side come to play.
@KxNOxUTA
@KxNOxUTA 2 года назад
INFP and I can relate to that a lot. It's frustrating and you wanna shake them and tell them what it takes to stivk to the light, but you equally know the limits human condition imposes on us and that it's pointless. For if they could right now, they likely would. But they likely currently cannot. So it's about leaving people be unless you come by someone who's got "a window open" and is willing to have a chat through it, maybe throwing sth. out or taking something in.
@ninaportoc
@ninaportoc 2 года назад
@@KxNOxUTA Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me. I am a social worker, graduated in november. When I started the course I had that mentality of shaking people to make them understand that we all have shadows and the important thing is to work on them in your own terms. But now I see it way more as in: people will change if they want to change. You can create an environment where people will ask for your help if they need something in the process of them changing, but you cannot control them. You can't control anyone. There's only hoping for the best and doing what you can with the psychological and physical resources you have at the moment to help along the way, if they want.

As an ENFP I can totally agree with ENFJ's contradiction. I feel good around them but start to hate them for always being overly judgmental. I like that they are themselves but they try to manipulate me too much and control me rather than accepting me. And when I confront them, they get emotional and try to deny it which makes me want to tell them their flaws which upsets them. "How could you say such mean things to me?" Even though I was the one getting all the criticism in the first place. Then, I start apologising and they accept it after few days. And the cycle continues.😅 That's what makes me want to prefer INFJs and INTJs.
@kensears5099
@kensears5099 2 года назад
I suspect the way to deal with the ENFJ is, critically, don't let the tension build up, rumblingly, in yourself, till it explodes. As you have admitted, it doesn't really work, and the whole cycle just starts all over again. Clearly, therefore, you need to ditch that approach in favor of a completely different one. The thing to do is respond to each and every instance of perceived (I emphasize "perceived") manipulation and control, but NEVER respond to it as if it's manipulation/control. Instead, respond to each instance as if...what analogy might work...as if it's a waiter suggesting a dish. If you like it, say "yes," if not, say, "no". Keep, as much as possible, your ego out of it. Here's another analogy, though it might seem cruel: if you were walking down a city street and some demented wino on the corner were hurling random abuses at random people, telling them how ugly or fat or stupid they were, and one of those abuses happened to float generally in your direction, you'd hardly be crushed. You'd recognize it as something entirely "about" the poor wino and not by the remotest conception in any way involved with you. Now, I'm not calling ENFJs winos, of course, but you get my point. You need to maintain that same kind of emotional, uninvolved distance. What would it take for you to chuckle at these eruptions of ENFJ "interference"? There's a good question to meditate over for a while. You need a complete overhaul of your way of "taking" it. One thing that helps is to identify somebody else on the receiving end of ENFJ criticisms who seems to handle it swimmingly, not bothered at all, and emulate them.

I simply don’t trust enfjs in my life anymore with my honest thoughts because they judge everything morally and can’t find compassion with people’s darker sides, but call themselves empathy. It’s tiring to discuss anything with them cause they get really pushy and I perceive them as self righteous.
@We1are2bob3
@We1are2bob3 2 года назад
Speaking as an ENFJ, I do recognize in myself a desire to help people I care about to improve in areas that clearly hinder them. I want to be encouraging as a friend, but it is a fine line between that and pushy or overbearing. Trying to walk that fine line could come across as manipulative, which is something I try to avoid. I've been working on being more direct with people, particularly as a lot of my social circle are thinkers (which can be its own challenge). I can accept someone as they are if where they are makes them happy and well. Those people are growing. But self improvement is a big motivating factor for me. I am pretty patient with people, talking years, and able to distance myself from people when help clearly isn't wanted. As long as I see someone trying to live their life to the best of their ability, I can support them. But here's the thing: I'll have issue if someone takes support from me again and again and then refuse to listen to advice on how to not run into the same problems. Someone who is clearly in a bad spot of their own making but refuses to even consider changing, no one can help. As for accepting them as they are? That's a lot of energy spent caring about someone who won't improve either of our lives, and who actively takes from me. I've been there. That gets dark and stressful. Besides, my presence hadn't helped them so far, so it would make no difference if I was there or not. So if I'm judgmental, it's only to measure who will drain me and who will grow with me, so I don't pour years into someone who will make me regret it. So as to the ENFJ in your life, it sounds like they're trying to express that they care about you, they want to make sure you're growing, and you're both getting frustrated over that overbearing nature. They probably need to work on distancing their emotions from yours. If I was in their spot, what I would need to hear is that you're doing to best you can, and that they need to trust you to make the right decisions. As an ExxJ, things being out of our control can be anxiety inducing, but trust is something necessary to become healthy and to avoid those uglier tendencies towards those we care about. Being told to trust is a hard pill to swallow, but we know it's important. I hope this has been useful in understanding where ENFJs are coming from, and in dealing with the ENFJ in your life. tldr; Judgement is long-term self defense, but we ENFJ need to learn to trust people we care about to live their lives to their best ability without our constant imput, or we risk damaging the relationships we care most about.

I'm an ENTP...but I feel like people see me in reverse. They see the part of me that is constantly energetic and working, while in reality I feel l'm quite lazy behind the scenes. Though, I'll admit, as I've gotten older I've become far more reserved, so maybe my success will look more "effortless" as I change my alone time to my high-energy time. This video was timed kinda funny as well--for me personally, at least. I graduated high school this summer and am taking a gap year before I head to school next fall. This video struck home because I'll have weeks where my three jobs are wearing me down and I'll do nothing outside of them...but right now, I'm in full-on energy mode. I've got a theology research project going, an intense personal study of a law book I own, a more relaxed personal study of a forensic science book, and a strict writing routine for my philosophical fantasy novel. Sleep is non-existent (though I've been eating a boatload because eating was put on hold while I was in my work-focused phase a few weeks ago, lol).

@alainad6364
@alainad6364 2 года назад
@@archelynwolf GREAT question. I'll be honest...I have yet to fix my procrastination habit, but I've found that it helps to look at my to-do list and every item on that to-do list as a puzzle. I'll give myself a goal, and then think of my to-do list as the puzzle pieces that will get me there. Also (and this is more just general time management), think of today's workload as a chance to give yourself more time tomorrow. Lastly...I used to get REALLY upset about my procrastination problem, but I've realized it can be a strength. Yes, it sucks when I'm working on papers till 3 a.m., but it also means I perform great under pressure. I write my best papers when I've procrastinated on them. I've had two very fast-paced, kinda crazy jobs, and I impressed my bosses at both of those because I performed better as the work got crazier. Yes, it's good to try not to procrastinate, but don't deny the strengths it brings. Good luck!!

I felt called out, too. My husband always wonders why I obsessively take care of others, but refuse to admit when I need help. I think it’s a need to be needed, deep down, that makes me feel like I have to prove my worth by taking care of others. If I can occupy a role that’s indispensable, then I can feel like others aren’t just putting up with my presence. Accepting help threatens that role and therefore my right to occupy that space.

as an infp, i obviously agreed to the infp one- i also think the world would be a lot better if people took my idea's seriously. that said, i recognised myself in the contradiction for the ESFJ and the INTJ. My habits and values are as follows: I tend to care for people a lot, being very pushy on their wellbeing, but I don't feel like I receive a lot back for it. I don't know if that is because I hang out with the wrong people or something. My dad is an INTJ as far as I know, he seems extremely self-assured, always seems like he knows what he's doing. I think I picked up a lot of this. I seem very quite sure of what I say when I say something; I know that this is also an INFP trait (where strong values are usually backed by a loud opinion), but this determination of my values is scary to have; because I know that I can be wrong. Not for the same reason as the INTJ though.

The reason I've been so confused about my type is that at home, I am an infp, zoned out and in my own world, but around others, I almost always try to be an enfj. I typically have feelings of great concern for various people, wanting to help them and telling them to get more sleep or drink more water. And that energizes me as much as sitting in my room watching random RU-vid videos and thinking about random things. I don't have that sense of effortless charisma and smoothness that enfjs have, but I have the same ideals. It feels like I aspire to become an enfj, and I almost can, but I don't know if I really am or if that's just wishful thinking.

Well, it relates to me as (probably) an INTJ and for a friend of mine, who is probably an INFJ, BUT what worries me a lot is the thing that I somehow find properties of other types also suitable for me. For example, how to avoid mixing the uncertainty of INTJ with the INTP's inclinations to procrastinate due to the wish to think over everything properly? Some contradictions like ENTJ's and others' are also relatable for me. So, I think, while, e.g., INTJ's property of controlling is 95/100, it doesn't mean theirs (ours) properties of handling, focusing, perception, etc. are 0/100. And how much are those points - that would be interesting to think about, cause every type is a special kind of personality, whose specialties lead to a definite build of other properties, or, at least, a some limited spread of them.

@@DiminutiveFlower well, maybe. Only N/S comparison left. But I saw a movie "5 reasons you're not INTJ" on another channel, which bases more on cognitive functions analysis, and on 2 points I pass as an INTJ, on 1 strictly out, and on 2 I couldn't give any distinct answer. So I'm in doubts. That author also trolls like, "It's common for INTJs being proud to be an INTJ, but that pride is one of probable hints for mistype" -_-_-_-

Ah...once again while most of the contradictions sound very to the point and I do recognize it from the people I know, I still can't relate to mine...(ISFJ) it might have been because I have been dealing with health issues since my childhood so being in the need for help is a way of living, but I don't think I have any pride in that. I just feel bad for being a burden. And while I am always the one who takes care of others, I am grateful when in need someone will do that for me and I need this support, not just in health matters but in general.

ENTP. I agree with the boundless energy thing. Lazy might be the wrong word. I think ENTPs will do anything to pursue new ideas and laziness doesn’t satisfy that desire. I'd be curious on your mercury placement and it's aspects. As an INTP myself, my mercury is in conjuction with both my moon and Venus Rx in Capricorn 1st house while being squared by Saturn who rules the house in Aries. Mercury heavily projects a need for framework in how I approach my emotions and creativity. Virgo is ruled by mercury, less chaotic than that of Gemini's influence, but nonetheless it's a deep interest in knowledge. Since I'm assuming you are referring to your Sun, the outward projection and sometimes associated with the conscious mind in evolutionary astrology: Virgo Sun definitely could have this effect, especially if Mercury is sitting there as well and Virgo being a 1st or 9th house. I'm rambling at this point. But astrology, actual astrology beyond the fad can give deep insight. There is a reason Jung researched it heavily and came up with archetypes and eventually this personality system. You could say MBTI has roots in archetypes displayed in Astrology and Myth.

@@PupDeLaTart Yep, INTP’s should (in theory) have quite cerebral placements throughout their chart and it would be interesting to compare a number of charts to see if there are discernible patterns. My Sun Venus and Mars are in Gemini. I also have Mercury in the 1st (Conjunct Asc) in Cancer. Mercury is in trine with Moon and MC, with minor aspects being septile with Saturn, and Bi-quintile with Pluto. An INTP’s Uranus placement would also be interesting to track given that it is often referred to as a higher octave of Mercury It’s great to see other INTP’s with an interest in Astrology. I was attracted to learn about astrological charts due to my interest in history. Throughout historical times, astrology was a means of interpreting and explaining the world. It only made sense that in order to learn about how people of the past thought, that I explored it myself. Regardless of whether any weight should be applied to it, it’s a great way to provoke deeper thoughts about our own behaviour. It’s extremely unsurprising that Jung looked towards astrology to create the archetypes.

I'm so cynical! Yet, I see the beauty in so many things! You've got the ENFP down perfectly.

The question of 'Is this thing I'm investing time, money, effort, thought, etc. into going to be worth it in the long run?' is indeed haunting. I think that's why I can seem so uncertain at times. I struggle with self-doubt and an expectation of ultimate failure sometimes, so even though I am driven to set goals, plan and organize towards those goals almost by instinct, I doubt that I can achieve the goal and/or that the goal will be worthwhile if I somehow manage to succeed in it. If I do manage to set a goal that is achievable, worthwhile and can keep my insecurities at bay for the time being, I can become an unstoppable force that plows through all obstacles to achieve the goal. I can relate to your description of an INFJ here as well sometimes. When I'm not stressed out, or too busy driving towards a goal - when I'm sort of 'idling' and allowing myself to rest and be in the moment, I can become intensely observant of what is going on around me and with other people. When I was a little kid and wasn't burdened with all these responsibilities and such, I was even more this way. I felt like an observer rather than part of things. Like an alien sent to see what the Earthlings were up to. I've always been rather passive and unemotional in terms of expressing them, but was especially so then. I've lost track of how many times people have turned to me for advice or to be a sounding board. My older sister even used to talk to me about her problems, knowing that I wouldn't tell a soul. Not because she threatened me if I did tell, but because she just knew that I wasn't the sort of person who would gossip in the first place. To some degree, I'm still often finding myself in an advisory role. Some of my best jobs have had an aspect to them where I was to give customers advice about something. Sometimes, even perfect strangers will just start talking to me while we are waiting in the doctors office, or at a bus stop etc. I guess I just come across as a good listener. What you said about being 'emotional scientists' is interesting. I often find myself observing and analyzing everything like it's a science experiment. I'll find myself thinking things like "I wonder what reaction I would get if I told my wife about something I've been noticing in This way rather than That way?" for example.

Yaaas! As an INTJ, I am so indecisive! You'd think I would know what I want pretty quickly, but it takes lots of planning and weighing the pros and cons of a certain thing before I commit. And trust me, it's normally the right decision, but if it isn't then I blame myself for forever...
