At least that gerda company is standing behind their locks by sending you a new one with higher tolerances. Looks like they enjoy seeing skilled lock smiths have a hard time getting in to prove the quality they've made. Best advertising for them
The funny thing is that, where i live (in Poland) everyone, literally everyone has those gerda locks. Yeah, as you can guess lockpicking is not the most popular theft method here

Hey when you want to see the inside of the key hole and are having trouble with getting light into it just use fiber optic lighting. You can literally go and get one of those cheap fiber lamps and take a single strand and shove it into the lock hole.
Love how Gerda responded to you. That lock is a beast, and it's only got better over time. I hope you can get the first one picked if even by complete luck, just so you can try out the new version.

As a firefighter, I find that most locks / secured doors can be defeated with a Halligan bar and a sledgehammer (or TNT tool, or flat-head axe). But smashing things isn't the most fun if you're not in a hurry.

Although those locks may be challenging or impossible to pick, they're of little value on typical American tract houses, since a rock from the landscaping will get a burglar through a window or sliding glass door faster than one could operate the lock with a legitimate key.
@@rkan2 but those are both tamper-evident, which is the point of having a hard to pick lock, if the burglars broke a window or busted in the door you have clear evidence that your house has been broken into while if they entered by picking the lock it'd be far harder to prove
I actually once scoured your channel looking for a success re-attempt of the Gerda Tytan, as I'm familiar with that exact lock (but also with a built-in break-in alarm circuit :D). That variant actually needs picking three times - once for the steel peek-hinge and then twice for the main lock. At three rotations, it's unopenable from the inside of the house, so if someone breaks in through the window, they'll have to carry your stereo out the same way ;) and if they try to force open the door, the built in alarm sounds and (optionally) can send a signal over a cable tot he rest of the sec system. Neat... :D
Nice collection Bill! I've picked a Banham before, I think you should disassemble it as it's not as complex as you might think. When picking it, make sure you don't stick a pick between the opposing pins, they have to stay touching (hence the holes in the key). I filed a half-ball pick to grip the pins without separating them. The hard part is the feedback... very little
It works in both ways, most of the time. For the pickers, a hard to pick cylinder is nice. For security, that's also needed. (of course, for security the cylinder must not be bypassed, by smashing or something alike)

Ever hear of Tri-circle padlocks? We had them in my old boarding school, came in different sizes(biggest one I ever saw had two burly rugby players on each handle to try and use bolt-cutters, and these were HUGE bolt-cutters), and were, according to us, practically impossible to pick. I didn't know about the bobby pin trick back then(about 25 years ago ;) )
The Gerda locks are most used in Poland, the 7 of 10 people have it in their's door, and it is exellent. The Gerda door have 4 or more bars that lock the door in 4 direction to the frame and they are impossible to broke in. Just wild 90's :)
Pretty cool, the D12 TrioVing locks are the new standard in Norway now. If you buy a new door, or just a new cylinder, chances are you're getting a D12 lock. I work in a hardware store and we don't even sell the old TR4 cylinders any more. It's all D12.
If I had a shop full of tools like him that gerda lock would be immediately in the door .I have seen the videos of how they pick this in yugoslavia and I would feel very safe knowing it was securing my tools. they have to make a impression of one side then make a blank and test it then make another impression of the next side and test that needless to say they are there for a while with 4 sides .
Gerda,that's Polishsecurity lock and doors company.I'd never heard that any thief can open Gerda doors,especially one of those highest models,equipped with Gerda Lock.I've one set in my flat and I feel really safe.Gerda doors that I've are 85 mm thickness.Inside steel grill and warming layers.
The last one - Gerda could be locked by one turn, the second make the lock impossible to open from inside. The idea was to not let the burgler use the doors once he gets into a house. But it works fine with younger brothers as well ;-) My parents had this lock since 90'
Scorpion is actually how CX5 was originally branded & distributed by a Canadian company called Can-Am in the late '90's. They renamed it to CX5 mid/late 2000, so that is a old cylinder. Marks came along about that same time. All mfg in Korea.
Great video of tough locks. Was beginning to think putting a lock on anything was pointless if someone had a pick... or in the case of a Master Lock, a chopstick.
Ah hand made hard candy. That brings back memories. The grandmother of a neighbor made hard candy every winter and gave it to us kids at New Year's Eve. To flavors: sweet woodruff (Waltmeister) and dandelion (Löwenzahn). The woodruff i tasted since is not the same and i have never found dandelion as a flavor since. Ah my mouth is watering. :-)
No wonder Gerda is one of the most popular door locks in Poland. :) Most of the people I know have similar round-keyed Gerdas on their doors, me included.
i know that most times the lock is only as good as the door or hinged portion for thieves, but as home owners or retailers-super great locks here. im trying to find a video on the castle style keyed lock
Nice :) I always have at least one Gerda in my door and never had a break-in. But about 10 years ago one of them failed on me (key wouldn't enter all the way) and I had to call in a locksmith. He did defeat it, but I can't remember how...
Pawel Kalinowski - keys were fine. From what I remember, I was able to insert the key all the way, but couldn't turn more than 90 degrees. Maybe he just lubed it.
I might have gotten lucky with the bitting but I tried and picked that Mauer Lock several times using a rake and a hook for the sliders and a flag on the pins. I was going to the sliders after I had set all of the pins to some extent and finished of the last 2 or 3 pins with the flag pick after that. If there was a pin cut too deep it probably would not have been possible to access the sliders. So I guess it might be just a coincidence that mine is nicer to pick.
Nice to see Gerda among your challenge locks. Polish company, I remember when they were new on the market when I was a kid (1987 I think). Pretty popular here in Poland. My apartment's door is from them, dimple locks tho, easier to carry than their big round keys (idk how to call them).
I've got BiLocks on all my exterior deadbolts. How do you feel about them? I think I'm keeping my stuff fairly safe. That's on top of BiLock protected heavy security screens.
I've gotten tons of challenge locks,only two i can't get open,,,1 schlage from Texas Jim that I get into a DEEP false set then I get no feed back from anymore pins and the other is a Union euro cylinder I got from Bill in a box o locks years ago has the sticker "Waddac2" on it,,spent hours and hours on them one day I'll get them!! One day
Man, that Scorpion tho! I have a CX-5 KIK and I was able to pick it, but I've been trying to find a Scorpion or CX5 in a SFIC like that, haven't found one yet.. They are pretty cool locks!
I am not in the business, but got the knowledge, so wondering if a design where two pins, say #2 and #5, or worse, two pairs, have to be picked simultaneously, would be unpickable? Standard pins and springs in a row, no weird keyway.
douro20 Well, it is actually Dutch company which has its factory abroad. It is now part of Assa Abloy. This NW5 cylinder is an evolved version of the NW4. It is NOT pin in pin and not licensed from Mul-T-Lock.
The only thing I can think of with the abus/cisa is trying a dimple pick from the side of the pins don’t know if you’ve tried that just wanted to suggest it
Holy shit... That banham lock... I have one like it I found in the garbage, but I have no clue how it was secured in the actual lock, or what the actual lock was. It has two ball bearings on the end that retract when it is unlocked and it could have rotated in the enclosure, whatever the enclosure was, but there is no indication of how it was actually held in the lock. What is even more interesting about the lock that I have is that there are THREE rows of pins! There is a third row of pins along the top. It boggles my mind that this lock could ever be picked. I have debated sending it into you, and wanted to learn to pick it myself, yet seeing that even you cannot pick the two row one I doubt I would ever be able to pick the three row one.... I may send it in to you just to disassemble and see what is inside.

I have been wanting to comment on so many of these awesome picking videos. I think I found the one to comment on! Great skills, I am a noob, but I giggle inside when I hear pickers say I'd use this to lock up my valuables. As Americans we pay for the thought of having security, when in reality if a thief wanted to get in they will friggin get in! If someone wants something bad and they know you have it they will find a way! My grandfather paid hundreds of dollars to put new locks in his house, sheds, etc. He about died when I used my set of bump keys to open them all! It's sad that majority of people where I live have kwikset or Schlage! Our local home depot practically only sells the easiest to get into locks. I love picking and puzzles, and when a friendly couple was buying expensive locks by kwikset and saying better nobody can get in, I ruined their day inadvertently, lol! Guess we as a culture think the more expensive the better, etc. I been watching your vids all day! Great job!
For the dimple key lock from UKbumpkeys, did you say the maker of the lock was "banham"? Any idea where to get that kind of cylinder? And if I ever find one, any idea how to get keys made for it?
Gerda locks are very popular in Poland and the ones with round keys are considered to be unbreakable. The common opinion is that you shouldn't install them into regular doors (as opposed to reinforced security doors). The reasoning behind this is that desperate burglars will just destroy the doors that have this lock and there really were cases of this happening. Even then a burglar has to hack a hole through the door that he could slip through, because this lock is impossible to open from the inside when locked from the outside, to further complicate things for potential perpetrators. The only downside seems to be that the keys can be replicated without the use of any special keymaking equipment, but that's just what I heard, don't know if that's true.
Any key can be replicated. It need to be rly fck strange to be impossible to replicate. Because the more expensive key replicators are small 3D CNC. those replicator sometimes even have options to "go around" patents by slightly changing shape for example by making semi-random cut somewhere :) Such things as key restrictions or patent protection, whatever is plain worthless marketing.
Two questions: What's to stop people from cutting the lock? How you you pick a lock without a keyhole? Because I have one of those, but I have no idea how it works.
I would love to see you attempt a Medeco Biaxial Mortise high security lock, as well as a Folger Adams (similar to the Brinks Mogul you have done), but this one had the side pins. I ask because we use both these type locks at my facility.
There is no shread of evidence worldwide that Gerda titan has ever been picked by anybody.In fact nobody came even close doing that.The locking bars in Gerda are made from steel.In 95% of the locking rods in armoured doors ,they are made from a nikel plated alloy that has mild to low strength.You can bend them using a prybar.Good luck doing that to this Gerda lock.Opening a hole through the wall is a better choice,because the other would be to remove the entire door with the steel frame from the wall.
I don't quite have the time to look through lots of your videos but I'm a long-term subscriber. How comes there's no mention of the Protec2? As I understand, that remains unpickable, right? Secondly, regarding those Gerda locks, I thought the G2000 came out years ago (before 2013 I'm sure) before the G1000, and yes, the G2000 has incredibly high tolerances. Typically a brass core with brass pins. There's 4 different depth pins and the longest pin (for the deepest cut) are typically mushroom pins with threaded pin holes in the core. Due to the design restriction, those 4 pin depths can become easy to remember if you see someone with a key as the key is 8mm as well as the cuts making very distinct sizes so you could actually cut your own key with a Dremel for example. Illegal because patented but hey, you think a criminal cares about patents?
I'm curious, besides being fun, what's the point in picking a lock in a home setting when you could drill it out? Do these locks also have protection against someone drilling it?
EURO profile lock usually have end well generaly eny kind of european locks have drill protection. To be fair in europe it's easier to go trough windows than doors :)
+bosnianbill I happen to have seen retail pricing on that ASSA-Abloy d12 series, it's like $100 per cylinder, non-custom. And the side-bitting is almost fixed with only a handful of different cuts in any given market. They have an even trickier series where one of the pins is electronic with a chip and a battery in the key. You have to pick 5 pins, plus sidecut, then crack the electronics before it'll turn. But they went all cloudy with the chips, having to phone in your chip all the time.
I'm not sure if a lock is going to keep anyone who /really/ wants to get in out of your home. Most likely your house is covered in breakable glass entrances. If it's not, a lock or door can still be forced. If there are no doors or windows into a home, someone can still break a hole in the wall and gain entry. I don't think any criminals learn to use lock picks anymore. Lock-picking is a hobby for the good guys.
Med Otaku+ sure. Nothing is 100% proof but you wanna make as hard on the person breaking in as possible and hopefully, he'll give up and find an easier target.
Yeah, but the takeaway is that there isn't really a need to increase your lock budget BEYOND the point that a thief will simply decide to break your windows rather than pick it. Anything past that is just wasted money. Now, the story's different if you've got a bigass safe that you're trying to lock or something. Something they can't simply take away and break open at their leisure. But for a house door, there's a point at which there's nothing more a lock can do until you put bars on your windows.
Where would you suggest gettting a new quality cores in Canada? I purchased the Stanley 828145 as per recommendations and your videos....and having a heck of a time finding any Canadian sources for high security cores :(
