My father is a carpenter, and has made a box very much like what you have there. Instead of leather straps it has wooden "loops". He probably saw one from some older master and made it from memory. Didn't think the design would be (at least) hundreds of years old.

Thank you so much for this upload. It is a joy to see you back. I am pleased to say that both of the beautiful belts you supplied to me over the years are worn both exclusively and constantly.( I binned all my other belts) I am even more delighted to note that I still use the same fastening location on the one I bought in 2018!!! The older it gets the sweeter it becomes. Wish I was like that!! You have always been one of the most intriguing, skilled and gentlemanly people I have ever had the privilege to watch on RU-vid. Live long and prosper sir....

I have made lots of these, and one carried my Plumbing tools for 20+ years until I retired, I fitted compartments on the Outside to hold specialist Plumbing Tools leaving more room inside. Len O.

Very good to see you again. My dad had a couple of tool boxes like this, one a bit larger than the other. I don't recall seeing him use a strap to carry them, but he did have assorted leather belts & straps hanging on a wall in his tool shed.
@harryrogers
@harryrogers Год назад
No the strap is probably only of interest to shoemakers, as it doubles up as a foot operated shoemakers stirrup
@jeffstratford
@jeffstratford Год назад
The strap could be used with a low Roman bench to secure wood in a similar to traditional Chinese woodworkers. Great box will certain make one, can never have too many toolboxes.

Great project Harry. I’m about 1 1/5 hrs from Williamsburg. I don’t remember seeing the shoe shop. I’ll have to make sure I get there again soon and spend some time in that shop. Thanks for the dimensions. Great News on your book. Very glad for you. Best Regards, John

Thanks Harry. I use a toolbox of similar design, every day. Mine is made of plywood and has a piece of conduit for a handle. It's 8x20, lightweight and easy to carry comfortably at your side because it's narrow. I've added basswood blocks full of small holes to hold drill bits etc. I wouldn't trade it for anything, think I paid twenty dollars for it at an auction

That sounds a very good design Karl...the lightness is great.

Good looking toolbox. I'd be afraid of putting dings in it and scratching it.

Sweet design, thanks for sharing. One thing I would've done differently is nail the leather loops in AFTER I glued the whole thing together. That way, it takes four times as long and the inside of the box gets all banged up. I keep a bunch of my tools in japanese design tool boxes, another time-proven one. their weakness is definitely requiring two hands to pick up. I'll make this handled style soon :)

To hold the strap

I have a very similar one my wife bought me though the handle doesn’t disassemble. It was frustrating to the point where I sawed it off, adding two inch feet to each end so it was higher. Still not as good as the one you’re showing here.
