Something a little bit different this time; it's the same 18 holes of mediocre golf at my home course of Salem Golf Club, but this time it's paired with maybe some helpful thoughts on the mental side of golf.
Rotella, Nilsson and Marriott, Penick, McCabe, and others are all recognized names in the field of the game within the game of golf, but perhaps we've overlooked the biggest name when it comes to teaching the proper golf mental approach; Winnie the Pooh. Before I was old enough to read I asked my parents to read Winnie the Pooh every night. Apparently the lessons taught in that humorous children's book soaked into my psyche deeper than I had appreciated, because I find time and again that my approach to life and golf, especially the frustrations of trying to improve at golf, to mirror Pooh's.
Has it helped my steep, over-the-top yank of a swing? Not one bit. But it certainly helps me maintain my composure when there's no honey in my shots and the game isn't going my way. I'll just keep working at it and trust that like a river, eventually I'll get there.
Hope you enjoy and leave a comment about what works for your mental approach or what you struggle with on the mental side. There's a Pooh quote for everything.
