In video 1804 we'll take a look at a brand new Zeiss Ikon mortise cylinder that several of you were kind enough to point out to me on eBay.

Those locks were designed more than 30 years ago when zeiss ikon was transferred to Ikon an later 'assimilated' by Assa Abloy. I saw many of those for example in trams for securing access to electrical components. The reason for manufacuring was simplifying and standardising the housing in sizes. the same kind of locks were used with 6 or 7 pin master key systems- not for security but for having more variations in keying. example: 10 different keys for different access levels in a system of 2000 locks. they were built in many different profiles: here TK5 N2, TK6, TK7.....security features were these days not as today with hardened inlays. so the ball bearings inside the springs were used as basic anti drill protection- especially when you tried to drill out the springs only.

Bill, I know you get asked this stuff all the time but all the starter set recommendations I see are budget minded. As someone who prefers to buy once, cry once as they say I would love to see a video of how you would build a complete kit if you had to start from scratch today. Thanks for sharing all the tips and advice, I am excited to explore the world of lock picking!

Do you know, all of those times when you go "Quit flapping your lip Bill"? Those are most of the openings when we all learn something! Oh, and I love the phrase "the low end of high security" :)

I didn’t notice till now, but you’ve passed the 1800 video mark! I can’t believe I’ve been watching every video since 950! Keep up the good work Bill! During this pandemic it’s really helping me and a lot of others to keep our sanity by watching your videos. I learn a lot about locks in your videos which I really appreciate, especially considering I’m training to become a locksmith. I’ve been interested in locks since I was 6 years old, now as a 16 year old, I can pick many locks and know so many bypasses. The education that your videos offer are great! LPL has become more and more popular, and more and more people know who he is and I have the satisfaction of saying yeah I watched him and bill before they were popular. I also have the satisfaction of saying that I sent bill a lock and got some picks and some locks back, and people are really amazed when they hear that. Thank You Bill for all that you provide to the community, keep up the good work!

The ball bearings are probably to limit a comb attack, and maybe the only forward part of the pinning that they did.

I'm between a novice & intermediate locksporter and I bought one of these on Ebay last week. It showed up yesterday and I got an open on the 2nd try. It was 35 bucks and I too, had hoped for a little more frustration. But I will say, it is a beautiful lock.

Yesterday I had to remove the sixth pin from a cylinder because the other locks were five pins and they wanted all on one key. The longer key would not fit in the five pin cylinders. I am just saying there are considerations for not filling all chambers. Most of the time it seems for no reason I can see however.

This isn't considered a high security for Zeiss Ikons measures. First of all, this happens to be their standart model, 5 pins, no special features. Only special thing about this one is that it is chrome plated and polished. They just drilled 7 chambers to have a Standart. This way you could fit different plugs for even different models (say a 7 pinner) into it.

I wonder if those locks might be the excess from a special production run Zeiss made for a custom order. It's not unusual for things like that to end up on eBay.

It's not China. But someone further down the supply chain may have sold their spare locks that had been lying in a box for 10+ years.

nice Pick and gut, maybe if you can't find a better length key, you can cut back the shoulder one pin position , move the originals one chamber towards the rear, and add a new pin set to the front. Some hardware stores carry ring shims like that and some are even flat springs, but I'm not sure if they carry the right diameter.
@BD90..
@BD90.. 3 года назад
Nice picking Bill....but if it is in the door your tensioning arm and hand won't be positioning would not be that way. Let's just say your shoulders would get a workout and you hand would be resting against a door or door frame. Picked but not in a door. If it was....you would probably use a faster method.

My think the extra 2 chambers are designed for easy masterkeying. The ball bearings are security features against bumping and overlifting attacks.

How do you know, thar Zeiss really claims "high security" for this lock? I can imagine, that there are 2 more advanced versions of the lock on the market, with more pins, perhaps different security pins. It is likely just done this way to reduce cost of development, manufacturing and storage of different lock bodies.
@firesurfer
@firesurfer 3 года назад
It's more of a marketing gimmick to claim higher security for more pins. They can charge more for them. 50-100% more.

Nice job. I like that keyway. I saw another utube picker, forget who but might have been locknoob, explain how those tiny ball bearings work. They're anti bump. I seen you use that pick a few times before. Is it supposed to be curved like that, or have you warped it through use?

Seeing it's a German lock... Why not pick the next German/European(?) lock the way it would be mounted in the country of origin? How much would a '180' screw with your muscle memory? (Unless I'm mistaken, and then I'd be gladly corrected, they're mounted the other way around, aren't they?)

Are the colorations on the core tarnish or tempering oxidation? Is the core hardened / battle-hardened?
@LabRatJason

There's a lot of tarnish on that core for a "brand new" lock, don't you think?

Good morning Bill. You announced a German pick - for a German lock. Is that a thing? After that, it's all a blur. How can I pay attention to your lock moves when I am bugging my eyes out in case I spot your face on that shiny, shiny (and weird) lock? (In which case would inform you immediately, for the good of the cause.)

If it's German, and genuine, then it would still be 'How many cents did they save, by doing that?' It's hard to forgive Zeiss for penny-pinching like that. No way is that one 'high security'. Yet another Fleabay scam.
