In video 1896 we'll look at a 7-pin Zeiss Ikon Euro that Hans-Christian send from Germany. After a bit of a struggle, I got it picked & gutted. This would have given a much longer fight had it not contained master pins...oh well...

OH NO. Another beautiful Euro cylinder destroyed. Here is how to disassemble it the right way: wiki.koksa.org/Montageanleitung_f%C3%BCr_Zeiss-Ikon_Zylinder_mit_Klauenkupplung

Great pictures on the web page you linked to. Thanks! But in all fairness to Bill, without knowing the internal details of the lock it would have been extremely difficult to disassemble it without cutting it in half. And even following the instructions you linked to, the order of the driver pins would have been lost.

@@tomferrin1148 Not if you pull out the pin holder very slowly and take the pins out one by one. I've disassembled and assembled a lot of those locks, it's a hassle but works very well.

@@tomferrin1148 Indeed, without some Google search, you would not guess howto disassemble. But disassembly, without loosing the pin order, is possible using a pinning shoe. This cylinder was in a very good condition, respecting it was from the 70ties. Sadly it was destroyed.

It has a reason that there are so many master wafers, these locks are normally installed at the front doors of a building with many flats, each flat has a similar lock. So you have only one key for main entrance and for your flat, but your key won't open the locks of other flats. That said it's not really problematic that it's easier to pick, cause this lock will only get you into the stairway of the house but not into any flats..

Do you happen to know, in the circumstances you describe can the resident change their own locks and use two keys if they wish?
@lestatloewenhof5368
@lestatloewenhof5368 3 года назад
@@johnrich6928Yes, you just should keep the original lock and put it back when you move out again. It is fairly easy to change these locks. Also it is not allowed for the landlord to keep a key to your apartment without your knowledge or against your wish, so it is your right to change your locks any time.

@Scythe42
@Scythe42 3 года назад
@@unlockeduk TOK is always towards the pins, regardless of the orientation in which the lock is designed to be installed. It is from the perspective of the keyway itself. Same with padlocks, when haning somewhere the pins are on the sides usually, still TOK and BOK are the same. Regarding why the Euro Profile is "upside down". Pins were at the top initially on all kind of pin tumblers. When Zeiss Ikon came up with the design of what is called these days Euro Profile in 1928, one of the unique selling proposition was that their cylinder does not need a cutout that is much larger than a keyhole and can be used with existing doors and locking mechanism. They came up with a full modular system much like today that also required less material than the round cylinders. Hence for that reason the pins in the "Hahnprofil" (that how it was called) are at the bottom. It was a success and spread in across Europe and beyond and other manufacturers licensed the patents as well quickly, because of the ease of adoption in most of continental Europe . Zeiss Ikon saw the potential in licensing as well right form the start. It is not like the companties that made up Zeiss Ikon were noobs in the lock business or newcomers in Europe. Orientation of the pins does not matter as theiy are spring loaded, and dirt/corrosion makes no difference. They knew about that 100 years ago and it was no issue back then, not an issue today. Really, Euro Profile just a differnet design that sold better in a different market initially when the global market for pin tumblers was "fresh".

One thing I noticed on lock pickers is that you pick the locks in a vice, ant that way you can get your hands behind the lock which seems quite comfortable. Would it be harder fir you to pick them when installed in an actual door? (And as someone else mentioned if you had to pick it "the right way round" like they are installed here in Germany?

I think one of the reason he puts his hand behind the lock is also so we can can see him picking
@doublejaylar
@doublejaylar 3 года назад
LockSport enthusiasts follow the rules/ethics of the hobby & are only trying to open the lock or device. Any locks being picked are not to be actively in use & the picker is supposed to have permission from the owner of the lock. Holding them in a vise, with a stand, or in one's hand is simply a preference for each individual. In Bill's case he has demonstrated many real-world scenarios of picking for viewers. However, holding locks in a vise, is often done to improve the video's framing & focus. This also allows any 'feedback' from a lock to be shown in greater detail for newbies to learn from it. There are LockSport groups that focus on authenticity & picking locks in real-world applications. But, for most LockSporters they leave that to locksmiths & just want to improve their skills & abilities in comfortable ways & within the rules of the LockSport community.

Hey Bill, how does the ball bearings in the spring work as an anti-bump? Just curious?
@derfuchs3296
@derfuchs3296 3 года назад
My guess would be that it keeps the spring from fully compressing. If most springs fully compress but the two with the ball bearings don’t, it’s impossible to bump.
@curlyvideos
@curlyvideos 3 года назад
I'm guessing it's to give the springs different mass/inertia (when mounted top-upward, like in America), as well as different maximum compression depth before stopping, both of which result in different timing than the rest of the springs. The balls seem loose inside the spring, which means they won't increase tension (since the whole spring can still compress evenly around them). We shouldn't overthink the final positions of the balls within their springs in this gut, but we can gain additional info from how they'd be mounted in Europe: springs-below-pins. If the balls roll downward when mounted, then their position won't change when bumped, and thus mass/inertia is irrelevant. So if their only real-world function is to prevent as much overlift travel distance during bumping, then the lock's still bumpable, only with tighter timing before the first pins drop back down.
@jambonroyale2774
@jambonroyale2774 3 года назад
@@curlyvideos the balls are intended as an anti-combpick measure, not anti bump. If you're able to read German, check the koksa wiki on this one

How about picking European door locks the right way up? They are generally designed to be used with the opposite orientation to most US door locks. The printing on the lock gives a clue about correct orientation. Using a lock the wrong way up can affect the security adversely. Thanks. 🙂👍

It is in fact not really master keyed. It's quite the opposite. This lock is used for the front door of an apartment building, each apartment has only slightly different keys but they all can open this front door lock. This was you don't need extra keys for front door and apartment, everyone can ooen the front door with their apartment key but only their own apartment.
