Jim, Thanks for all the informative videos. Just reassembled my old snapper comet and waiting to fire it up tomorrow. replaced the broken chain in the differential, new gaskets on the differential and chain case, new bushing/bearing on the left fender, adjusted the spring. Looking forward to doing additional needed maintenance using your knowledge for guidance....

Replaced the clutch disc on my 2811523BV Snapper, and it's like having a new mower! When I lined up the old clutch disc with the new one, the old one was 1/4" less in the diameter--that's how much rubber had worn off. I probably needed to do this 2 seasons ago, but I'm so happy I finally did it. It pulls better, turns better, and even seems to cut a little better (maybe because the blade drive belt was losing power to the slipping clutch?). Love my machine again. Thanks for the video!

Jim always answers my questions quickly. Clutch problems: based on my experience if the mower does not move in gear the clutch is defective (worn) or simply not engaging engine pulley. When my clutch was 60% worn it started slipping. I found the issue was the distance between the clutch driven rubber disc and engine pulley. My engine pulley was adjusted exactly to factory specs. Adjusting clutch pedal tension and yoke spring tension did not work. Yoke was not worn either. To adjust pulley clearance, and the clearances are minimal, I put it into reverse with the clutch engaged because this is where the chain case would most likely rub against engine pulley which we don't want. This would happen because the pulley was too close to chain case. I losened set screws on engine pulley and pulled it down until it contacted clutch firmly. Then I checked chain case clearance and found case was rubbing on engine pulley. I increased the engine pulley clearance until chain case just did not rub on pulley. At this point I still had a firm clutch engagement. I tightened set screws on engine pulley. All was fine. The manufacturer clearance specs for the engine pulley must pertain to a new or only slightly worn clutch disc. So, if the clutch is slipping or not engaging engine pulley and nothing else works you need to decrease the engine pulley to clutch disc clearance.

I just went out this morning and checked all bushings, adjusted the clutch spring to max tension and greased the slide for the shifter and hit all the zerks while I was there. I was having some slow clutch engagement to almost none unless I put it in a higher gear. I checked the slide and it looked normal, the disk and clutch pack looked ok, I had replaced it a month ago. The spring adjustment is what I think will make the difference. Thanks for the tips.

Not one bad tip! Thanks for posting. Sadly, we see fewer and fewer of these good quality mowers surviving. People are under the belief that newer is better. I keep pushing it home, keep your old mowers, fix them or get them fixed because today's lawn equipment will never last as long as the older stuff. I picked up a mechanically pristine Ariens Riding mower that required very little service and it will continue to function well beyond the serviceability of today's machines. Any time I can get one and restore it, I will. Snapper has always been my favorite. Ariens second.

very good video, good information. in one video you mentioned the little hole in the transmission case, its a vent, when its plugged, the case builds pressure and can cause seals to leak. Just FYI
@jimjackson9381
@jimjackson9381 4 года назад
Brian Workman The hole in the differential cover and chain case cover is a drain hole on the paint line they are supposed to hammer them shut so they don’t leak when they assemble the machine some get hammered shut and some get missed that’s all that is, it is not a vent, the boots that hook to the chain case and the differential have a vent hole in them that allows the differential and chain case to release any pressure that may build up inside of them but typically they don’t build Any pressure. That was a good lesson, on why forward or reverse direction is not 100% there. In review with what I think I learned. 1/Axle bearing/bushing Play 2/clutch disk Play 3/ clutch inside condition 4/ metal yoke wear 5. yoke bushings wear 6?/a) wear inside both chain boxes from lack of lubrication 6?/b) wear inside both chain boxes from boots being bad/gone from dirt entering them 7/ & cork gaskets dry out weld shut factory drain hole add 80/90 if replaced cork gaskets. got it! thks

Jim I have been watching your Channel for Quite a while now, I used to work at a Snapper Dealer Here in Northern Maine about 30 years ago , I graduated to Automobiles in 1997 and sort of lost touch with Mowers and Equipment , However I bought an Old 3081WS rear Engine Rider in 2016 that had been parked in a Barn for Years , I brought it back from the dead , and Have used it A lot since then , a couple weeks ago I acquired an old tired Snapper 2650 that had been Modified Extensively, it had a 7 HP Briggs , someone put an older 30 inch deck on it at some point , and so on , the engine was pretty tired and I had an 11 HP Flat Head I/C engine that I fixed up recently so I put it on that old machine and of course had some issues with the drive system , I watched this Video Friday Night and followed the instructions you gave about the drive plate depth and also the worn out Yoke for the Clutch , I addressed those issues and it now drives as it should! thank You for this Invaluable Information , I had Forgotten so much about these old Machines

Hi Jim, Thank you for the quick response on my Snapper mower regarding the Mulching attachment. My question is “will it affect the mulching if I remove the track guard in the deck that directs the grass out of the deck. I want the grass to be mulched under the deck and not direct it out”? The mulch cover works fairly well but with grass being directed out from under the deck it allows too much to escape out by the tire.

Great Job, but' The fluid in these are 00 "Grease" used in the farm industry for gear/chain driven machinery such as PTO drives, combines, tillers, , bailers and many other implements and sold at farm stores btw... The reason it don't run down inside the bottle well is because it's heat activated like any other grease it. It is not an oil therefore it don't exactly act like an oil even when new. Its sorta both really? Once it heats up then it acts more fluid like but' as any grease does but oil won't do without being pressurized is 00 Grease actually clings to the "top" gears & chains much better than hot oil, especially if stop/start a lot as oil simply runs right back to bottom every time. Grease remains in place ready to protect, so does 00! If you ever played with the Lucas additive gear oil display the 00 grease acts a bit more like it once it heats as it clings to gears/chains excellent. Way before Lucas ever did btw and being a grease it works in higher heat apps better than oils & why grease is used on bearings not oils. Its coated inside these pans? Well' 1st) because your tearing it down while its not heated so its much thicker. 2nd) because by the time you or anyone ever tears a Snapper rear engine or self propelled rear end apart its over 30 yrs old not just 16 like the truck was. However I flush my 30yr old SP every few yrs and change out the 00 to new unlike so many who never do that. Now' I use my 40yr old Wheel Horse Tractor mainly since I have a couple acres though. The 00 farm grease has been proven very effective on billions of gears dating back centuries when the steam tractors hit the first farms and in industrial use such as railroad trains & machinery long before that surely. Ask your local farmer how many implement gears he uses 00 Grease in and How long they've been going strong. Answer- Too many to count and for several decades!! Most likely many were grandpa's, handed down just like many Snappers were originally. fyi- Very few actually know more about a product than the actual maker themselves, some just think they do. You did a pretty damn good job explaining it all here though...lol ****

Jim, I really find your videos very informative. I have a Series 24, 28" Snapper mow. It had been unused for almost a year because I had surgery and had to hire my lawn mowed. I change the oil, sharpened the blade and filled it with fresh gasoline. It goes great in reverse and on flat ground but my yard has an incline and it will not climb the hill. I have ordered a new clutch and new belt. Is there anything else I need to look for when I turn it up on the butt to replace the clutch and belt. I don't want to do this again. Getting old :-) and cranky. I live in Arkansas.

Hey Jim, so I am working on a snapper 28 inch 12.5 hp snapper riding mower. It didn’t have spark. I come to find out that the coil was being grounded. I found there are three black wires, but hooked to a terminal connection on the side of the engine. One goes up to the coil. The other one goes up to the ignition switch and then the last one goes into a splice that seems to go to the safety switches and the interlock module. I found when this wire is removed, the mower will start and run work normal from the key switch. when I checked that wire that goes to the interlock module and splice to switches, I found it had high resistance to ground. I tracked it down to the safety switch for the deck blade engagement. I replaced that switch, and the resistance to ground was gone. but the mower still wouldn’t start with that wire hooked up. However, it no longer showed or resistance to ground. So now I am really confused. I took a shot at it for the 12 bucks and replace the brake / clutch switch. The problem still exist. I know I can just keep the wire disconnected. It would run however, I really wanna know what the problem is. At this point I think the problem is the interlock module but I don’t understand when the wire is disconnected. The mower runs fine and The wire doesn’t have any resistance open circuit. But when I touched the wire to the connection on the motor, shut the motor down. Even though it’s not grounded . I hooked the meter to that wire and when I touch it on that it shows grounded. I disconnected the ignition switch and the problem still exist. Now, unlike your video where the mower shuts off when the clutch is let out my mower doesn’t start no matter what I do unless I remove that wire. Before I replace the interlock switch, I wanted to see if you had any other ideas
@jimjackson9381
@jimjackson9381 6 месяцев назад
Well, it’s hard for me to be sure what the issue is unless I actually run some tests on all the switches and check the wires for any bad spots that may be grounding out the machine, one spot you want to check the wires is where it comes out of the tube Just in front of the engine sometimes the sharp edge of the tube will cut through the insulation on the wire. Otherwise I would have to guess is probably your interlock modem that’s giving you your problem. Jim.

JIm, I'm subscribed now. I have a video that explains how to do that and what to watch out for I can’t think of what video it is right now but I’ll see if I can find it typically what happens is when you slide your clutch disc assembly on the shaft you bump the Woodruff key and it spins out of place and when you tighten the nut it pinches the key between the assembly and the bearing try it again and watch between the assembly and the bearing and watch the Key so it doesn’t turn out of place let me know what you find out. my old snapper looks like this. it is older. mine only works in some gears when it wants to. just discovered earlier it ran at "5" the highest speed. had a kinda tall yard to mow and prefer to go slower, but took advantage of it actually moving. had to mow pretty much twice because of the speed and it getting clogged up but i really need to fix it. also had to hold the trans lever manually to keep it going. i am assuming i have to drain all the fluids to be able to tilt it to work on it.

You're the man Jim. My rear wheels are all locked up and I'm gonna crack mine open soon, starting with the left wheel and its need for manual greasing that I've neglected; but I have a separate (possibly related) question you might can help me with: I have rarely used the clutch to switch between forward gears for years, it just didn't seem necessary to press the clutch at all (and come to a stop) every time I wanted to slow down or speed up a little. So, how bad an idea is that, and where might the extra wear show or cause something to fail? p.s. The first thing I checked for the wheel lock-up was the flared bolt with the locknut in both rear wheels (thanks to another of your videos) and sure enough the left one was sheared off and I've replaced it but it's still all locked up, no forward or backward, had to use a handtruck to get it back to the shop.

Take the linkage off of the chain case and see if it still moves stiff if it does then your shift handle needs to be cleaned and greased, if the shift handle is moving freely try sliding the chain case back-and-forth by hand you may have to pull the boot loose from one side of the chain case and clean and greased the hexagon shaft do it on both sides of the chain case and see if that gets rid of the issue let me know.Jim

charles wigglesworth Hey Charles it’s Jim It sounds like you have a problem with your coil the biggest problem that viewers have is the ground wire that plugs in to the coil it runs along the hot cylinder head and sometimes the heat melted through the wire and shorts out the coil, the best thing to do seeing you have electric start pull the recoil cover off the engine unplug the wire from the coil and try to start it if it starts that’s obviously your problem Run a new wire to the coil if it doesn’t start look for a crack on the coil if the coil looks OK then you’re going to want to check your safety switches there’s one in your seat there’s one under the main Case for the yoke and there’s one on the mower deck and some machines have one on the shift lever any one of these could cause this issue check it out and let me know what you fine talk to you later Jim

It’s either one of two things you need to clean and grease your hexagon shaft so the chain case will slide, but I think it’s more your shift handle is rusted the best way to tell is unhooked the linkage that hooks onto the chain case and see if the shift handle will move by itself alone you may have to compress the spring and take it apart get to rust out of it grease it and put it back together. If the lawn mower dosen't go forewrad or backward and the break dosen't work the first thing to check is the Hub pen which may have sheared off from wear. Easy fix take off the tire and replace the triangler hub and pen if the hub is worn bad at the hole where the pen goes. Thanks to the Randy Townsend of Townsends Service Station in Fairmount, Georgia. They are a Snapper Dealer and work on all kinds of Lawn equipment. Also he said he prefers the Nylon Bushing rather than the bearings because when a bushing goes its less likely to destroy the Axel compared to a bearing. He has seen axles cut in two with a metal bearing that fail. I was so relieved as I thought a differential or chain was going to be the issue. Chief Estilette First I would stand the machine up and put a clamp on the clutch and hold it open then try to turn the back tires if you turn one tire the other tire should turn in the opposite direction, turn the clutch disk by holding one of the 5/16 nuts and see if the tires turn and let me know. I have one , my motor won't start now . I was cutting tall grass , it bogged down , stopped , and now I cannot get it to start . I tried to put starter fluid in the spark plug chamber and a little in the air intake , but will not even sputter. I fear it might be the timing ? What say you ?
@jimjackson9381
@jimjackson9381 2 года назад
Well it could be the timing but usually you have to hit something pretty solid to knock the flywheel out of time the only way you can tell is to pull the nut and washer off the top of the flywheel and look at the key to see if it’s lined up or if it’s off a little bit it does not take much to knock the timing out so it won’t start, if you turn the key does The engine turn over at all or does it do nothing?. Jim

@@jimjackson9381 Thank you Jim SO much for responding , this model or year does not have an electric motor , and boy is this a hard one to pull to start! But the answer with pulling it can still be answered , yes , it pulls over fine , I hear no muffler noise (from compression) but , it does have plenty of compression ...I will try what you are saying to do, I know what you are referring to. IF you have a you tube video of performing this procedure, could you pen it so I can review the procedure? Thank you so kindly

@@isitlaw2919 to tell you the truth I’d have to look it seems like I didn’t make a video on that but you can run up 300+ dollars if your flywheel does not have the ring gear for the starter most do not so you would have to buy a fly wheel, a starter, a solenoid, a ignition switch and some wire to wire the whole thing I can check to see if I do have the video or not. Jim, I've been considering buying a old Snapper from the 60's. My question is, are parts available and is it likely that a very old machine like that is going to have a transmission that is beyond repair and costly to fix ?
@jimjackson9381
@jimjackson9381 Год назад
If it’s from the 60s it’s probably a comet and some of the parts are hard to find there are a few guys that have totally rebuilt them so there must be parts out there somewheres I’m just not sure where you could find them or how much you’re gonna pay for. Jim

@@jimjackson9381 okay, I finally got around to taking your advice, tightened the spring and it worked great for an hour. I tipped it up on it’s back to sharpen the blade. Now it won’t move (engine runs great) . I can’t even roll it in either direction . Gear shift lever doesn’t want to moves very far. Any ideas, can you point me towards a video? Do you have any way for people to pay for your help. I’d be glad to.
@jimjackson9381
@jimjackson9381 Год назад
First I would disconnect the linkage from the backside of the shift handle and make sure the Shift handle is moving freely If it is hooked on linkage back up and take the linkage off the chain case and make sure the chain case is sliding freely from side to side sometimes the hexagon shaft that the chain case slides on gets dirty and sticky that’s underneath the boots you want to clean it and grease it that will help a lot let me know what you find and if you need any other help.
