1863 Sharps Carbine Problems

This is a short story of how we were able to make this Armi sport 1863 sharps carbine shoot accurately. This rifle shoots best with a lubed .54cal ringtail bullet, 15 grains of filler (grits) and 35 grains 3F Swiss powder. This is one of the most interesting black powder firearms that I’ve got to work on and shoot.

I recommend using the eras gone Richmond labs bullet. I love using flat based paper cartridges, when measured properly they seat perfectly and nothing gets sheared or lost (also makes unloading easier). I highly recommend the Eras gone bullet for the cartridges, they have a heel that attaches to the paper without making a bulge that interferes with proper seating in the chamber. Thank you for the video, we need more content like this on RU-vid.

Flat bottom paper cartridges will give consistency of powder charge resulting in better accuracy. That is super great shooting by the way, congratulations.

Another factor to consider is chamber length. Duelist1954 has shown that different makers have been using different chamber lengths with Pedersoli having one of the longer ones. Simply making a cartridge from a commercial former could end up with a cartridge that either has to jump into the rifling or if seated, leaves a gap for the cap spark to jump. Not good for consistency. Measure the chamber and make a cartridge that fits yours.

If I just load loose, it takes about 100 grains of powder to fill up the chamber. Are you using that much powder or are you putting a filler in between the bullet and the powder?

So….An 1863 Shiloh Sharps .54 will top off with about 120 grains. Is loading 70 or 80 and leaving that much air space gonna affect an 800 yard shot? Should be using measured corn filler or something before dumping the powder in? Or corn topping a paper cartridge? Thoughts?

I have the Pedersoli. It takes a hundred grains of 3F to fill the chamber if I shoot it by loading powder and bullet. I make the Eras gone bullets. That does work great, but I don't want to waste all that powder (I did this way before seeing this video). So, I have to use filler. That means a paper cartridge of some kind as far as I can figure. Or...are you putting the filler in directly too? Then the powder behind it? If so, I assume that only works if you move the piece very little and shoot it right after loading. That wouldn't work on a hunt where you were climbing crawling and scraping your way to your game would it? wouldn't the filler mix in with powder? Has anyone ever tried this and left the gun loaded for a time? I'd love to know. Mine also suffers from poor ignition (now I am not a novice to flintlocks, been shooting them since about 19 and 74.) Started shooting cap and ball revolvers around 15 years ago. Got my Sharps around 5 years ago. Have never had a problem I couldn't figure out before...Until I go this Sharps. I have to take a little powder from the sheered off cartridge and drop it down the cone to get it to fire. It seems like weak caps but I've tried them all. I have made nitrated flat bottom cartridges but it wont set them off regularly! I've lost interest in it because, for me it has been NO fun to shoot.

Not sure on your take, I am running the Pedersoli Shaps 45/70, 32 inch barrel sporting 1863 model. I am assuming, more than likely the breach loading system is exact the same. I have been told 2 things about shooting them. (1) one by a gun smith, who said like you, drop the bullet in the breach top up with 30,50, 70, measure or a full BP load, it would take near 100 Grains or so of BP, close the breach cap it of and "BANG." Although I could use a little rice to pack it out if you want smaller loads behind the bullet. (2) another person said, yes it will work but the rubber O ring, will blow out within a few shots. Whats your take. Never shot it, I still have about 10 Brass shells which hold about 55 grains of BP. And 380 grain bullet. Any advice would be good. Which would you go for on the options ?

I can’t say. I wouldn’t be afraid to try either one

@@Everythingblackpowder 30 grains of powder; using black powder would not be that good with such a big Cal and heaverier bullet. I was refering to my comment regards black powder use!! I have about 385 grain lead bullets same system as you have, but my one is .45+ cal I have brass shells which hold about 55/57 grain from Pedersoli for this rifle. using about 2ff home made BP. so logicaly following your idea droping the bullet in, loading up with some rice,or other filler, following by about 65 to 70 grains I would basically be copying you. Is yours a Pedersoli rifle, if so, the system breach wise is exact the same except difference cal aspects/size. But not sure if you know, but the rifles are proofed to smokless powder, that information comes stright from Pedersoli own test Proofing house, as a point of interest ! Happy post up the results. I am confused as to why you said you would not try it, clearly in the film your have. 🤔 or have I just missed something here !!

Make a paper cartridge but you need powder with bigger granulation, then filled full cartridge and measure the powder by weight. With big granulation you have more volume but less weight of powder. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tieDzxe-hiw.html
