18650 Safety - Some things to know when handling using bare lithium-ion cells

For the past 3 years, I have been making use of harvested 18650 lithium-ion cells out of laptop batteries for powering my flashlights and cameras. In this video, I'll be discussing some important safety tips for handling these kinds of batteries.

On the fist charge of a scavenged cell I charge it at 300ma. At that charge rate they should not heat up at all. So if a cell is even slightly warm I discard it. Now the hood cells are at 4.2v Step 2 I let them sit for a month. If they self discharge to below 4.0v I discard them. The good cells I have found get sorted into 4 piles. 4,0v to 4.05v. 4.06v-4.10v 4.11v-4.15v and 4.16v-4.20v. When building a parallel battery bank I use sells from the same group. That way a cell that is going to self discharge to 4.02v won’t pull down a cell that could have held 4.19v.

I put the battery charger in a fire proof bag when charging cell overnight or when I can’t watch them closely. Once the cell is charged I store the cell in a fireproof bag for the first 24 hours.

As someone who has done safety testing for a well know tool company I can tell you these things can be very dangerous. Depending on the capacity of the cell, a hard shorting condition can yield ~125-150 amps. I’ve seen 21700 give up 450amps. Do not remove the wrapper, do not let the cells heat up, don’t ever try to reset the CID (I’ve seen this in another video). When in doubt just tape up the positive end with some painters tape. If you are going to work/weld or have a chance of a shorting condition keep a 5gal bucket of water very close so you can knock it into the water if you feel the cell heat up. Please be careful!

please don't use water for bad cells! that is dangerous as lithium metal reacts with water to produce flammable gas and also heat. Use a bucket of SAND or even dirt, or even just an empty metal pot and when you have to use it for an out-of-control cell (even if its not burning yet) take the pot outside where it can burn out safely. Probably not going to extinguish a burning cell, so if it does happen, get the burning cell outside to a safe space where it wont damage people/property.

@@thisunity a 5 gal bucket of water is more than enough to cool an 18650 cell that is getting "warm". It will cool the the entire cell much faster than sand and contain debris if it goes into TR. A cell won't likely go into TR until ~125 - 130C. The point is to never let it get that hot while it's still in one piece. The faster you can cool it the better. If it goes into TR it's likely going produce flames and better to have it in a large volume of water if it happens.

Let's just say, hypothetically they were all welded together. and when I pulled them apart I ripped the metal casing on the top of the terminal for the positive side of the 18650... And the negative.. Am I going to explode now? I mean hypothetically, if that was a thing that just happened, like 6 times or so.....

Great topic and advice Nick! I have a nitecore 4 slot smart charger for my li ion batteries it is also multi chemistry (nimh ni cd) but I also have a separate nimh charger for my "ordinary" Flashlights and remotes I have also harvested laptop batteries and am always mindful of not shorting the batteries and circuit boards I also use a multimeter to test those cells and will not attempt to charge below 2.5v because I am not afraid of li ion batteries but I respect the potential for failure which is not pretty

Thank you! I felt that with all the videos I have posted of cell extractions and 18650-modding my various cameras, a video about battery safety was warranted.

hi, you seem to be the right guy to ask a questions. I recently disassambled an ebike battery to salvage the cells. Now these were 3500mah cells from LG, they had some printing on them ive never seen, something like "Only for OEM use, if you can see this printing, dont use battery, risk of disfiguering, explosion"..now those are not very kind words. we all know its not a good idea to pin a cell with a nail or put in in the micorwave. But im asking myself if these cells maybe miss some basic protection againt overcharge or overtemp. do you have any idea/ experience on that=?

The bare cells lack overcharge/overdischarge protection, and were intended to be used in a pack which has those protections on a standalone PCB. That printing is there because there have been cases where people have reused the cells in a very unsafe manner and therefore have had bad things happen because of it. It's the manufacturers way of excusing themselves of liability for actions that happen from using a cell in a manner other than its intended OEM use.

I have some cell holders that don’t have a coil spring on one side. It used the same connector on both sides. I put batteries in backwards twice this weekend. Which was not good. So I have put red electrical tape on the positive side. I think that is enough to stop me from putting them in wrong. I will find out over the next couple months.

Everyone talks about batteries exploding in their pocket but what the HECK is going on in your pocket exactly is it the negative and a positive hitting against each other? Also my battery shop to me one day and now I’m a little scared to touch them why did it be that or ..”.what would make it be that?”I should say. Basically I just want to know what is dangerous to do with these batteries besides putting them in your pocket lol I know that having a damage dropper and all that is not good but why and what is happening that makes it dangerous

A lot of times, 18650s have exploded in people's pockets because of a short circuit caused by keys or change. It could be also because of subpar quality cells without proper protections built in.

People may not think common 1.5 or 1.2v cells may go in those places, as the max discharge current vary quite a lot, which could explode things. Don't mix normal cells with those!!

The protection circuit included on some cells is very similar to a standalone BMS found on a pack. This is why laptop cells do not have this circuit onboard each cell.

Sorry to ask... In a nutshell, are there any main Do's and Don'ts for these? I have a D4V2 Ti and I just want my pets to be safe when I leave these batteries unattended to.

Definitely keep them out of reach of pets and children. If you have cats, this may be difficult lol. Although I don't have cats or dogs, I would keep the cells stored and charge them in a room that's off limits to pets.

Thank you for great information Regarding the top of the battery is actually separated from Negative blow the positive contact I tested and found there a small grove between them ,,,, maybe I am wrong

Great review and information on these batteries. Are they save to leave in flashlight? Should you take them out when not using them? I got Samsung ones with the lumintop edc18 flashlight. Notice when charging the had low voltage. Charger is charging them nicely. Got it from Amazon uk. Lumintop suggest use ones from Samsung Sony and LG. Are they safe keeping in tent duren summer when tent gets hot! Thanks for video and stay safe!

No, these are intended for low current draw applications, and generally have a max discharge rating of 2C (2x capacity in mAh, a 2200mAh cell would have a 4.4A max rating). Power tool cells would be more ideal for your application.

I've always kept the casing from a few sideways-oriented laptop batteries used them as storage trays for cells. Now if you're traveling with them, then you'd have to store them some other way.

Great video, came to this video after watching the lg ad about the dangers of using li-ion batteries. I wouldn't want to take the risk without a protection circuit. I use them in my projects because I use a premade circuit. I also use this for drone batteries which are li-po batteries.

For pretty much all of my uses, the cells are used in a 1S configuration... Also my cameras have built-in overdischarge protection. Generally you would want to use a protection circuit when you are running more than one cell in series, unless you are certain the cells are equally matched and also keep a watch on voltages.

Knowing the device you will use them in is important. Some devices expect the protection circuit on the battery some are in the device.

I built a 180 cell pack for my battery powered lawn mower. It originally was lead acid. It was a 12s15p pack. Of old laptop batteries. Because the pack was so big each cell only saw a 1 amp discharge. But all the cells had different resistances. So the pack was always unbalanced after mowing. So instead of a protection circuit I watched the voltage on every bank and balanced them manually. Seeing the exact voltage of each parallel bank of cells within the pack is really important with unmatched cells. Not really needed when using brand new matched cells

Clearly you don’t watch many make up tutorial videos lol if you want to focus on something up close to the camera put something like your hand behind it and it will focus but if your background is too far back it will try and focus on the background and stay blurry

Extremely good advice especially don't try to save the cell below 2.5v and very hot when charging it. Safety comes 1st no matter how amazing the process of recycling the battery or DIY
