as an owner of a 50-70 lets take a moment to appreciate how many 50-70 cases he had to procure or make to make this string of fire possible makes my wallet hurt thinking about it
It didn't suck that weapon is pretty heavy so you did well. Let the couch jockeys try to do better lol 😂 thank you for sharing this enjoyable video with us six stars brother
Those old rifles just got that magic you don’t feel in a plastic and aluminum rifle. You are igniting my terrible addiction for old guns . I wish I could buy black powder here in Alaska, maybe it’s time I make a batch or get in contact with a muzzleloader group. This was nice to watch, gets me daydreaming about shooting.
Pretty good shooting. I need to secure some Swiss powder for my muzzleloaders so I can get off 4 shots without swabbing and see how I measure up. Thank you for the great content.
Excellent Smithers. It's always a pleasure to watch your videos. I really like it when you embrace the spirit of the Cabin Fever Challenge. You are an inspiration to the legions of frontiersmen who still exist today. Facta non Verba
I’d say you preddy much plum peppered that target Jake! I did miss the smokin of black powder though but I ain’t complaining! Good Shootin and Kind Thanks! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania
I have a '66 2nd Allen that I may have to put a few through, although it is pretty worn. I usually shoot my NYS roller. I haven't had it out in 10 yrs.
"Outstanding Private Pyle I think we finally found something that you do well. Hell , I may even allow you to serve as a rifleman in my beloved corp." Full Metal Jacket 1987
Swiss is around 59.99 lb here+ shipping and hmat fee's way to much so thanks for the information lot's of 1/2" and 3/8" roller bearings brass. So in a few weeks I'll make 1 lb and hopefully I get everything right sounds like a good time got to get up to Maine and do it were nobody cares. So I'll let you know how it comes out.
I may have to try some blackpowder loads with my 45-70 encore pistol, may be fun. Im currently shooting 312gn pp bullet with 32gn accurate 5744. Might be cool to see if i get more consistency from blackpowder.
Personally. I think your rate of fire was on par with someone using a Martini Henry, furthering my belief that the Trapdoor was the best “stop gap” musket conversion of the 19th century.
yeah BP would be better Im sure. Youd just need a wee bit of breeze otherwise it might mess with your time not being able to see the target for smoke. 🙂The smokeless loads out of the lyman book I have seem to have big flyer potential, well for me anyway. There were some really good shots in that string though
What is the range to the target? It looks like about 1 hundred yards but I can't tell. It definitely looks like a fun challenge. Thank you for sharing Jake.
I had confidence in you,son . Still do. You may not get it the next time nor the 5th or 10th time after but when you need to you will. Do not try.... Do!(you will you know) 😁 (
duplex loads, best of both worlds. My sharps doesn't like smokeless, hard to hit the broad side of a barn, I don't think the rifling twist agrees with the slower traveling loads. tack driver with BP. still, looks like you had fun. that's what it's about.
I would love to try this with my 1864 Trapdoor but I can't get any 50-70 ammo anywhere and I can't even get the materials to reload for it! It also doesn't help I don't know have any experience reloading. A real bummer.
did they change the date i thought they ran the challenge in Feb? and Jake, on the toilet paper charcoal do you mill it or just crush it down and use it, the stuff i make falls apart so easy i just put it in a ziplock and crush it up then weigh it out!
At what range was this? I'd bet the barrel was slightly above room temperatue... There was a battle between the Brittish heathens and the Zulus in South Africa once. The name slipped my mind. Might have been Izondluvu or some such. The Brits used Martini-Henry rifles. (.450/577. Basically a necked down .577 snider case. Very close to the 45/70. It used a .45 bullet of 450 grain with 70 grain of BP. Or there abouts) The battle went on so long, that the Martini Henreys got hot to the point where, after chaimbering a round, it would "cook off" in the barrel😮 I dont know the auto-ignition temperature of BP, but I think I am safe to assume the barrels were red hot, at the time.
Meh. Shooting timed events is always a bear. There is a very fine line between losing points for time and losing points on accuracy… and in my world you’re much better off being accurate than being fast. But - the CFC is still a great exercise and you did more than well enough!
