After sighting in at 60 feet, I could easily cover 5 shots with a nickel ru-vid.comUgkxQt2uORDRfFOVSrO4idv4B90ThT6EOnEL ! Truly a pleasure to shoot! Scope was easy to adjust for eye relief. Only problem the varmints must have seen it delivered lol!Update: So impressed with shot groups at 30 yards I purchased a Hammers 3×9 with adjustable Objective scope! Now a true nail driver!

Hopefully some of the reloading companies, especially LEE, sees this. Having modern versions of that tool for new and old calibers would probably sell like hot cakes if they were reasonably priced.
@jic1
@jic1 2 года назад
Sadly, you're probably wrong about that. They continued to make those tools as the Lyman 310 up to a few years ago, and if they sold like hot cakes, they probably wouldn't have stopped.
@capandball

I also have the Lyman 310 tool, I'll be uising it in the next hunting video with the 44-40 Winchester.
@joearledge1
@joearledge1 2 года назад
@@jic1 that sucks, this video was the 1st one that I had seen ever. I know there's other little "primitive" or "emergency" reloading kits and tools , I just thought this one was really neat. I wonder if Lyman just didn't do a good job of advising them, or if they were only for certain older cartridges putting them into a nitch, or if they were too expensive to make it worth it for most people... anyway, thanks for the info 😊
@jic1
@jic1 2 года назад
@@joearledge1 Well, the Lyman 310 tool is not *exactly* the same, it's more of an 'evolved' version without the built-in bullet mold, but with changeable dies for different cartridges. So you lost the ability to make your own bullets and reload with the same tool, but gained the ability to reload multiple cartridges with one pocket-sized tool. I believe they did make dies for more modern cartridges like .357 Magnum and .44 Magnum.

Same. So awesome seeing an old American tool being used here. Too bad it doesn't fit his rifle's bore. Would love to see the same (i.e a comparable antique cartridge/bullet making tool) being used where it fits his rifle for distance shooting. In theory, since he need larger... he could have a machine shop re-size the bullet shaper if he feels that most 44-40's would use the larger size.
@mkultraification
@mkultraification 2 года назад
@@workingguy6666 If you cast it out of pure lead and use black powder, it would probably obturate enough to fill the bore. Maybe this is what they were depending on.

3:33 I can tell you from my time in the service, even with modern rifles and optics people will still miss a 200 meter target from kneeling so hitting that with such a weapon definitely helps to showcase your skill in shooting.

While I thoroughly enjoy all of my local, USA, gun channels I will have to say that two of my favorites are international. Capandball from Hungary and USOG from Canada. That being said this is another great video showing the ability and capability of a marksman and a good rifle. Will have to say that was impressive shooting from the kneeling position. As has been mentioned in other comments Gus was shooting from a prone supported position so yes if you were using a stable support I have no doubt that your percentage of hits would have been higher. Keep up the great content and salute from an old American fan.

I was under the impression that 44-40 nomenclature referred to 44 for the calibre and 40 for the black powder load, just to confuse when smokeless powers where introduced the nomenclature chaneged to calibre/ case length - or introduction year

The cartridge fabricating footage was very appreciated! Well done. Your groupings at 500 yeards were very nice, which is amazing-one of the big criticisms of the Winchester rifle of this time was it lacked sufficient range for military use. This was one of the reasons Custer's troopers were carrying the single-shot breach loading Trapdoor Springfield rifles at the Little Big Horn, they wanted better range fighting on the Great Plains! As it turned out the long range was not needed but repeating rifles certainly were-the best planning does not always work!

Thank you for your video. It is another outstanding presentation. This brought back memories of my father. He had a similar tool, but it did not include the bullet mold. That required a separate tool. My introduction to reloading was similar to what you demonstrated here: molding bullets, lubing, scooping powder with a cartridge case, and seating with the Ideal tool. I fondly remember those days. Thank you again for your video, and all the time and effort that you put into the preparation.

I'm liking your reference to Gus's shot in Lonesome Dove, ln the 70s l lived on the Dixon Creek branch of the 6666 ranch on the Canadian River. In the river valley where l lived it looked like where Gus rescued Lori darling from Blue Ducks gang. Then they took refuge from the weather at Adobe Walls where Billy Dixon made his famous shot with the 50 cal Sharps. You can see a long ways on the plains

Great video. I used to work in ballistics for modern rounds. That is one old lever gun, but very cool. We used to shoot 200 yards with a revolver in .357 and with a 4 inch barrel and get very close or hot soda cans. A 3 dimensional target is much easier to shoot at distanc.. ♥️ That tool was too cool.

A few years ago, i picked up a 32-40 ideal tool at a gun show, i got it for $20, mostly on a whim so i could show my son how basic reloading gear once was/could be. Then it dawned on me that 32-40 was the parent cartridge for 30-30, and after some work figuring things out, i made up a kit to load 30-30 with it. Over that winter i loaded up about 600 rounds of 30-30, mostly in the living room while i watched old westerns. The mold is not useful for me, but with the right dies and a deprimer, it does well. I really enjoy using it and if one applies himself, they make great ammo. GREAT VIDEO! I love that you put in a little work and were able to get the job done. I always figured that Gus must have been low on ammo, as once he had their range, he could have hit and wounded more of those guys. Also goes to show what a man can do if he learns his rifle thoroughly.

When you mentioned you were going to use period tools to load the cartridge I was surprised you were using the Ideal tool rather that an 1882 Winchester set. I have both the Winchester tool and mold along with Modern LEE molds and dies. I also have Ideal combination tools in other cartridges sizes. I have loaded black powder cartridges with bullets cast in the Winchester mold then assembled using the 1882 tool with good success. When I tried light Red Dot loads I considered it a failure as the there is no cannelure on the bullet produced by the Winchester mold and no crimp on the cartridge case. I could press the bullet into the cartridge case with my thumb. Then I picked up the modern Lee tools for producing Light Cowboy action smokeless loads. The rifle is an 1879 production unit with an OK bore that probably had not had anything down the bore but cleaning patches in sixty to eighty years. I should take it out and get it dirty again. This I believe to be the first video demonstrating Ideal Combination tool I have watched. The only part of the demonstration missing is the decapping and expanding pin. A piece usually missing from the tool. Be it Ideal or Winchester. I appreciate your videos. My votes in the Gundies are divided between your channel and C&rsenel for best reviewer.

I heard that Uberti uses the same 0.429 bore barrels for all its .44 rifles, whether they are 44-40 or 44 Special, so I use bullets sized to .429 with smokeless loads in my Uberti 1873 and it tightens up the groups considerably. May not be necessary with black powder and soft lead bullets as they will set up on firing.
