In video 1887 we'll look at Theo's Austrian lock that he got from a mountain Gasthaus (yes, the owners gave it to him after changing out their locks). IN it.....balls.

Some information: BASI is a german lock manufacturer and they are known here for cheap, lower-end locks. They have a few higher quality locks, but they mainly sell hardware store grade stuff (in hardware stores). Think of Schlage/Kwikset. However, the lock landscape in Europe seems to be MUCH more diverse than in the US (probably because countries are much smaller, many countries have lock manufacturers and shops usually mainly offer those, so that's what people buy. In Austria this would be mainly EVVA and stuff from Germany (this might also due to many hardware stores in Austria originating from Germany), like Gege, BASI, DOM, Abus, BKS, Wilka.

The different material pins might be so that they 'resonate' differently when bumped/jiggled.

@brianhignett8954

Combing only works on "straight" keyways - heavily paracentric keyways such as this "Yale" type will not allow the metal comb to lift straight up.
@Leadvest
@Leadvest 3 года назад
Proper overlifting prevention is a single long driver pin. Old solution that's been out of favor for decades is to put a mini pin in the spring.

Using German lockpicks on an Austrian lock indicates that we're seeing a reenactment of the historical event known as Der Ausschluß.

> Der Ausschluß. (1) Anschluß rather than Ausschluß (2) According to the new German spelling, the old ß is replaced by ss (result) Anschluss (personal opinion) Only people who live far away can have such fun about it
@horrovac
@horrovac 3 года назад
@@galdavonalgerri2101 Well, since we're already klugscheißern, let's do it right, shall we? :) "Ausschluss" means "Exclusion", and in the case of an annexation of another country would make no sense. The correct word ist "Anschluss", which has two literal meanings, one is as a verb meaning "connection" (Internet connection is "Internetanschluss", electrical connection is "Stromanschluss" etc.), and another is to describe an action of attaching something - which is the meaning we're dealing with here. Anschluss means annexation, or literally, the attaching of Austria to Germany. The ß was NOT replaced by "ss" - it is still in use. However neither ß nor ss are used indistinctively. You may be using "ss" throughout (which is the correct Swiss spelling) if you are not able to type it (different keyboard layouts or you just can't be arsed to do it), most people won't bat an eye at seeing it, a lot of people even won't even recognise it as wrong, only grammar Nazis like me. If you want to show off your language skills, while writing official or publishable texts, you do well to use it correctly. In this case it's "Anschluss" rather than "Anschluß" because ß is to be used following a *long* vowel, while "ss" is to be used after a *short" vowel. Which probably doesn't help non-german speakers one bit since they won't know how to pronounce it anyway, but that's the rules. However, now you know how it's done correctly, so you can klugscheißern (be a smartass about it) when *other* people do it wrong :). So go forth and klugscheißere, my friend. In case your intention was merely to make it look more "germanic", and correct spelling be damned, be my guest. In this case I'd also advise using Umlauts instead of vowels throughout, looks even MORE germanic. Thus: Änschlüß!

@@horrovac Thank you my friend. I know that there is a difference between Maße and Masse that the Swiss cannot read. "Maße" refers to height and size (e.g. the human body), but Masse refers to weight (thinness, fatness). So it is very rude to tell someone that you have a good "Masse" (weight) - but some ladies may want to hear I admire your "Maße". Swiss people don't use ß so both words are written Masse.

No anti drill pins but anti bump balls makes sense in a hotel lock as a thief might well try bumping them but drilling or any other brute force entry method would cause too much noise to go unnoticed in a hotel environment so they probably don't need to worry about that.

I don't get the point of not installing the pins. They cost about $0.03 to manufacture and install. It's a negligible cost increase, security increase, and increases brand equity for having strong locks.

I've got a double sided one of these. Gutted it a bit messy and then hacked it apart. Guess it would've been good if it wasn't for a key with miserable bitting (I think it's all 3 but the last which is 4) Oh, and the ball bearings I thought must be anti bump or anti overlift. However, I don't have the tools yet to check that out.

@cooldudicus7668

My guess is that possibly the person who ran the hotel replaced the pins in the lock as it was used and the pins were worn out or they needed to rekey the lock because a key was not returned. Just a thought, nothing more.

Is there a way to make spools less detectable? I mean, you can feel there's a spool due to the counter rotation. Is it possible to slant the spools in the same amount as the ration, so the inside of the spool sits flush with the lock body? Would this remove any counter rotation from the spool, making it feel the same as a really hard binding pin?

Wouldn't different springs do the same job? And pins of different size and density as well?
@brianally1531
@brianally1531 3 года назад
Changing the spring reaction by adding the balls is more efficient than manufacturing a variety of springs. Notice that the balls are placed differently, also, in the two springs. They each have one at the end but the other two are in a different place along the spring. That must change the dynamics as well. All using standard springs and ball bearings. I'd place them above the spools. The pins do differ in density, also. Altogether, it looks like a clever and simple anti-bump design. (But I am not an engineer)
