January 2020 was warmer and wetter than typical in north Texas. The Brownell boiler firebox was filled with wood the prior December. Even though it was covered it still was too damp to easily get burning.
The new to the engine the old lubricator had never been used since acquiring it. The sight glasses and the stop valve had to be replaced. Fortunately no leaks were observed and operated as expected when steam was applied.
The new timber engine base now allowed the engine to be run up to its governed speed without fear of falling off its cribbing. Doing so revealed a condition seen on both of the other automatic steam engines seen in prior videos. That condition is where the engine valve timing is off when on the governor. This is indicated by uneven exhaust beats. The unscientific field adjustment is a first step in correcting this.
While they did not seem too bad when the steam chest was inspected, the valve component scoring might be too numerous and too deep to keep steam from constantly blowing out the engine exhaust. This materially reduces the economy of steam automatic engines are known for. More to do.

I've got a similar engine built in 1901 on a saw mill. It's a Fairbanks-Morse, 30 H.P. it belonged my Great Grand Dad then my Grand Dad and then my Dad. We just got through a complete rebuild and added a condensate recovery system. It runs like a top now. Mine has a horizontal fire tube boiler and not a vertical like yours.

RE John Willis: Fairbanks-Morse “similar engine” (Steam?) I was not aware FM made a steam engine. But if you made a condensate recovery system it sounds like a boiler was involved. Nice family history. 👍🏼

Hi, I just ran across this, I built a scale model about fifteen years ago, bronze and iron castings, about inch and a quarter bore, I never built an oiler for it, but have run it on compressed air, now I guess I've got to finally make an oiler for it. Thanks for showing this, I spent a few weeks finicking on valve timing till it was just right. Semper Fidelis.

Young people are a demographic I am hoping will find enjoyment in my video presentations. Sure you can't drive these machines with your thumbs and there's no joystick. In it's day, this was the high art of technology.

LineshaftRestorations Totally! I love thinking about how these old machines were the peak tech of their day. Unfortunately too many people my age are addicted to today’s peak tech, and have no other hobbies or interests. As for me, I have never played video games, and have no desire to do so. My hobbies are working on cars, airplanes, and especially engines!

I don't know where you're located but my grandpa had a welding and machine shop in Groom, TX. He had that same steam oiler in his shop. I remember looking at it and finally giving up and asking him just what the thing was. I would never have guessed! His shop had the old line shaft tools, but converted to electric motor driven by the time I was growing up in the 70's. But he had a hit and miss backup. I loved that shop!

I worked in a tannery years ago. The drums or mills the leather was dyed in all ran off a line shafts, with babbit bearings. The two big lathes in the maintainence dept ran off a line shaft. The paddle wheels in the beam house also ran off a line shaft. Those were taken out, the first year I was there.

Can work anywhere without a gas or diesel supply. Charge batteries. You don't get more high-tech than that. Also with a low speed pmg connected it becomes a very environmental friendly power plant.

Ive worked on old boilers in the sugar Mills in Louisiana that's from the 1830s. We got to actually pressure it up and start it after hydro. I've been interested since. I want to build my own engine. I've built smaller ones and understand down to the internals. If you have any old parts or things you would like to steer me to the right direction on. Please inform me !

An operator of this machine from 1895 looks at the engines I work on and must think how dangerous. I’ve watch this video twice and would still slowly back away from this thing. However it is a marvel, I would have loved to have seen and met the men that developed this, and those who cast the parts. Wow.
@lineshaftrestorations7903
@lineshaftrestorations7903 3 года назад
In its time, machines like this could be dangerous but not so much if given healthy respect. Even today simple tools you might not think of as being overly dangerous but can be if careless. I had a friend run a drill bit in his leg because of carelessness.

That Valve adjustment - Good engineering is that any bolted connection should have 2 threads left free after the nut is set into position, it seems on the valve push rod you're out of adjustment - this is the fine tuning. The connecting rod from the crank shaft to the valve push rod affords you some adjustment as well, it looks to be able to be lengthened which would coarse adjust it to near right and then the one you were adjusting would be the fine & final adjustment.
