anyone dropping $10,000 in the 1970s on a clock while on a vacation wouldn't get particularly excited about anything less a million dollars.
@Bratcipheo

checking us dollar inflation from 1970 -> 2001 when this was filmed, that 10k is equivalent to 45.618 dollars... so only 30% value increase.

This gilding technique is called "ormalu" which uses an amalgam of mercury and fine gold. It is no longer used as it was deadly to the craftsman--many did not live beyond 40--and has now been replaced by electroplating. The term for this kind of set (clock and candelabra) is called a garniture (matching set of something meant to be displayed together). Essentially, someone gave their life to gild this.

I love how she causally says she thinks she paid around 6,000 pounds in 1970's. That is equivalent of $48K in 2020 dollars. So update the story: My husband and I popped into a gallery and spent $48K on a clock. I hope it is nice. PS: After inflation, they have not made a dime in profit.
@ccassidy9090

I mean... Something consistently holding it's value for fifty years is great too. Currency fluctuates a lot, so does gold, stocks, virtually everything else. If they'd put £6,000 in a bank account there's always the temptation to spend it. You can't spend a clock.

I'll never forget as long as I live what I paid for my newspaper route bike at age 12 after saving up my tips... 18 dollas from the old guy who ran tge bike shop gave me a deal down from 25.
